Google Chat is integrated with Google Workspace and available to all Google account holders, but some users are still working with Hangouts. If you use Gmail and Hangouts, Google saves your Hangouts conversations so you can search and access them later from a desktop computer. Here’s how it works.

Toggling Hangouts Chat History

Whenever you have a conversation with someone through Hangouts, Google keeps the conversation history, allowing you to scroll up in the conversation window to see what messages have been exchanged in the past. To activate this feature:

Select Settings (gear icon) in the conversation window.

How to archive a google hangout

Select Conversation history to enable the conversation history feature. Once checked, Google will keep a history of the conversation thread.

How to archive a google hangout

If history is disabled, messages may disappear before the intended recipient reads them. Also, if one party disables the history feature, Google won’t save the conversation. However, if a user is accessing the chat through a different client, their client may be able to save the chat history despite disabling the Google Hangouts history setting.

In past versions, the option to disable chat history was also called “going off the record.”

Archiving Conversations

Archiving a conversation hides it from the list of conversations in the sidebar. The conversation is not gone, however.

Select Settings (gear icon) in the conversation window.

How to archive a google hangout

Select Archive conversation.

To retrieve an archived conversation, select your name at the top of your conversation list and choose Archived Hangouts. This will display a list of those conversations that you have archived previously.

Google Hangouts, the communication application from Google, is used extensively to chat with friends, colleagues, and clients. Google had released it as a part of the Google + but made it a standalone application in 2013. It is useful in communication processes because it provides a simple messaging interface where the user does not need to send a mail to others but conduct a simple chat.

Today, it is part of the Google Workspace (G Suite) line of products and consists of two essential components: Google Meet and Google Chat. Here are the features of the Google Hangouts that enhance the quality of the communication:

  • More than two users can chat with each other.
  • The previous chats are saved online, which makes these messages available on various devices.
  • Images can be shared.
  • Users can share emoji symbols.
  • A video chat facility is available.
  • The Android and iOS platforms have mobile versions of the application.
  • The Google Chrome users do not need to install a plugin separately as it is available by default.

Why Should You Take the Backup of Google Hangouts Messages?

Google Hangouts is used not only for informal chats with your team members but for professional purposes also. For example, for interviews, webinars, client demonstrations of your software, business consultations, etc.

Due to the importance of the content of these messages, you will not like to lose such messages. So, backups are also important.

We’ve all probably done it—messaged a friend about job drama or something personal while at work.

Numerous studies have found many Americans admit to spending some portion of their work day on personal things like emails and phone calls. A 2015 Findlaw.com survey found 50% of Americans said they used the internet for personal reasons while at work, and a 2014 CareerBuilder survey showed at least one in four workers admitted they spent at least one hour at work on “personal calls, emails or texts.”

Chances are high you were hoping to keep at least some of those conversations private. But deleting them, particularly on Google Hangouts (also known as Gchat), is quite complicated. Similar to trying to delete your Google search history, deleting your Google Hangouts history is not as simple as clicking a button. That’s because whoever you’re chatting with also has a copy of the chat, meaning they would also need to delete their history to eliminate the conversation’s online record.

Daily Money

“When you delete your message history, this is deleted from Gmail and Hangouts on all your devices. Other people in the Hangout can still see the history,” Google explains on its help page. Google did not respond to a request for comment on whether Hangouts history is still ultimately stored on Google servers.

Follow these steps to delete your Gchat history. If you want to ensure an entire chat history is deleted, make sure you tell whoever you were talking with to also follow these steps:

  1. On your computer, go to Hangouts at hangouts.google.com or in Gmail.
  2. Select a conversation.
  3. At the top of the conversation window, click Settings.
  4. Select Delete conversation.
  5. If you’re sure you want to delete your conversation, click Delete.

For deleting messages in group chats, according to Google, you’re out of luck. “You can’t delete the history for a group, but you can leave the conversation. If someone adds you back to the group conversation, you’ll be able to see the history again,” according to Google’s help page.

You can proactively prevent your Google Hangouts data from being saved moving forward by toggling your conversation history off by following these five easy steps:

  1. On your computer, go to Hangouts at hangouts.google.com or in Gmail.
  2. Open a conversation.
  3. At the top, click Settings.
  4. Check or uncheck “Conversation history.
    • Checked: History is turned on. Messages can be seen in the Hangouts on all your devices and in Gmail.
    • Unchecked: History is turned off. Messages can only be seen for a short time on your devices. Then, the messages won’t be saved and will be deleted.
  5. Click Ok.
  • Checked: History is turned on. Messages can be seen in the Hangouts on all your devices and in Gmail.
  • Unchecked: History is turned off. Messages can only be seen for a short time on your devices. Then, the messages won’t be saved and will be deleted.

However, even with this option there is no guarantee of privacy. Google explicitly notes that network administrators can change this option and that the people you chat with may still have a copy of conversation. “If you use Google through your work or school, your domain administrator can set and change this setting. If you talk to someone who uses a different chat app, their app may keep a separate copy of the conversation’s history,” Google notes on its site.

We’ve all said things we wish we could take back. And we’ve all sent messages we want deleted. In some cases, it may be possible. Google Hangouts is an app that offers such possibilities.

If you’ve sent something via Google Hangouts that you want to delete, you’ll be happy to know it’s possible. But there are a few caveats, so keep reading for more.

Deleting Messages in Google Hangouts

Google Hangouts has enjoyed an uptick in its user base recently. Perhaps consequently, it also received several updates in a short period.

An update in mid-2019 allowed users to delete sent messages in private chats. Before that, only G Suite enterprise users had the option to delete messages.

How to archive a google hangout

Unfortunately, you can’t delete conversations on both ends. That is to say, even if you delete one, the other participants will still be able to access it.

There is no way to delete messages from someone else’s device. Also, note that Google Hangouts doesn’t offer the option of deleting individual messages. You can only remove entire conversations with a single user or with a group.

Deleting Messages from Your Desktop

The simplest way to delete a message history with someone is to access Google Hangouts from your computer.

  1. Go to hangouts.google.com, or log in to your Gmail account and access Hangouts from there.

  2. You should now mouse over a conversation to reveal the three vertical dots next to it.

  4. From the drop-down menu, select “Delete.”

  5. In the pop-up, click on the “Delete” button again.
How to archive a google hangout

You also have the option to “Archive” the conversation instead. Archiving removes the conversation from your active list and saves it in your archive.

If you just want to hide a conversation to declutter your list, it’s better to archive it. That way, you can go back and review it later if needed.

Deleting a conversation removes it from your records entirely.

If you want to delete a group conversation, you don’t need to go through the trouble. Instead, simply leave the group, and it will disappear from your list.

Turn Off Conversation History

Deleting messages all the time can become a hassle. You might find it easier to turn off your conversation history if you delete messages frequently.

With the conversation history turned off, messages will only remain on your devices until shortly after you’ve seen them. Then, the app will delete them. That way, you don’t have to worry about going back and deleting your history.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. Go to hangouts.google.com, or access it from your Gmail account.
How to archive a google hangout
  2. Open an active conversation and click on the cog icon at the top to open the Settings menu.

  3. In the settings, find “Conversation history” and uncheck it.
How to archive a google hangout
  4. Click the “OK” button.
How to archive a google hangout

If you alter the conversation history settings this way, Hangouts will notify everyone in the conversation.

Whenever you want to start saving the history again, repeat the process. Check the conversation history box, and Hangouts will begin keeping track of your conversations once more.

Again, it’s important to note that this is a unilateral action. The conversation history of other participants will be saved on their devices unless they choose not to keep it.

Deleting Conversations from the Hangouts Mobile App

A similar process will delete conversations on the mobile version of Google Hangouts.

  1. Open the Google Hangouts app.
How to archive a google hangout
  2. Select the conversation that you want to delete.

  3. Click on the three vertical dots in the top right corner.

  5. Tap on “Delete conversation” near the bottom of the options.

  6. Tap “Delete” when the alert shows up.

Whether you delete the conversation on a smartphone or another device, it will get deleted everywhere. You delete it from your Google account, as well as your devices connected to it.

Deleting a Picture Sent via Google Hangouts

If you want to remove pictures that you shared through hangouts, you can do that in your Google album. And, this will delete the image on both ends of the conversation.

On your computer, go to get.google.com/albumarchive. In your album archive, you’ll find a folder labeled “photos from hangouts.” There, you’ll see all the pictures you’ve sent through Google Hangouts. Delete any images that you want to remove, and they will automatically disappear from the respective conversations.

How to archive a google hangout

If other participants downloaded the picture before you deleted it, there’s not much you can do.

An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth a Pound of Deleted Messages

You have a few options when it comes to deleting messages on Hangouts, but none of them can remove messages from the recipient’s device.

If you just want to manage your conversations better or want to safeguard information on your devices, you’re covered. You can delete conversations quickly and even prevent Hangouts from tracking your history altogether.

Unfortunately, if you want to “unsend” a message, there’s no real option to do that.

For some time you could see pictures someone sent you via Hangouts in an album called “Hangouts”. This vanished somehow.

When you open a picture from Hangouts on the Computer, you can still see in the URL that there is some kind of album. The URL is in the form https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/albums/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX and you can even browse this album.

Go to https://get.google.com/albumarchive/
There you will found a album named Photos from Hangouts How to archive a google hangout

When you click a photo in the Hangout history you will be sent to an URL that looks like https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/albums/string-1?pid=string-2&oid=string-3. To be taken to the album just delete ? and all the characters to the right of it. The resulting URL will look like this:

The photos owned by the user uploaded through Hangouts conversation can’t be seen from Google Photos (http://photos.google.com), only on the owner Google Album Archive.

For each Hangout used to share a photo will be an album called “Hangout: Your Friend Name or email address ● Your Name” or “Hangout: Group name” on the photo sender account. It could be viewable by both users using the URL trick mentioned in the “Short answer” section.

The internet has gone through several changes over the last few decades. From message boards to dedicated chat websites, many things would seem archaic now. Most of it changed for the better, but there are still vestiges of the old days.

To see what websites like AOL, Yahoo, or even Google looked like when they first launched, the Wayback Machine is a fantastic tool. Internet Archive is also a great place to get millions of free books, music and more. Tap or click here to find out how to use this excellent free site.

It turns out Internet Archive isn’t the only site keeping records from years past. But not every historical piece of work is something you want to be available – like your online chat history. Believe it or not but Google actually keeps records of your old chat logs. Keep reading to find out how to view and delete them.

Here’s the backstory on chat

Back in the day, one of the hottest chat applications to use was Google Talk. It seemingly revolutionized communication, as you could chat with anybody who had a Google account and could do so from within Gmail.

The service was launched in 2005 and lasted for 10 years until Google pulled the plug, urging users to shift over to its cross-platform chat application Google Hangouts, and eventually, Google Chat. The service might be long forgotten, but it turns out your chat history isn’t.

Learn the tech tips and tricks only the pros know.

Google stores all your previous communications in your Gmail account, and if you do some digging, you might find them going back as far as 15 years. It also indexes your chat from Google Hangouts, so those will be there too.

How to find your chat history

If you want to take a trip down memory lane, here is how to access your chat history:

  • Open Gmail on your desktop
  • On the left-hand panel, click More
  • Scroll down until you see Chats and click it
  • The screen will display all your chats that have been archived
  • Clicking on a conversation will open the thread

In the top right-hand of the screen, you will see a counter of how many chats are stored on your account. Each subject line will also have a timestamp, so it is easier to sort through. Clicking on the search bar at the top, you can comb through your chats for anything specific. Just remember to keep “in:chats” in the bar.

If you want to delete your chats:

  • On the main chat index page, click on the squares to select any messages.
  • Underneath the search bar, click the Trash icon.
  • To select all conversations, click on the square directly underneath the search bar.
  • Click the Trash icon.

If successful, Gmail will pop up a notification saying the conversations have been moved to the Trash bin. There is also another piece of info: “As some are part of a Hangout, they have been removed from your Gmail mailbox, but may still show up in other Hangouts apps and chat windows.” This means some conversations could still be visible elsewhere, like third-party apps.

Turn Hangout history off

If you don’t want Google to hang on to your chats, you can turn the history on or off. To do this:

  • Open Gmail on your desktop
  • Open any conversation
  • Click Settings
  • Tick or untick Conversation history
  • Click OK

When history is turned off, messages will only be visible for a short time, and since they aren’t saved will be deleted. Google advises that if you talk to someone who uses a different chat app, their app may keep a separate copy of the conversation’s history.

The pace of life has changed drastically over the past few years. People no longer have time for meeting up as frequently as they did before. Many adults have no time for leisure, while kids are often overloaded with studies.

Both young people and adults need a way to stay connected without giving up their daily tasks. That is where digital technologies come in handy.

Due to the Internet, social media apps, and instant messengers, people can do what they need on the go. Need to accomplish your home task asap? No problem, do it right on your tablet. Want to arrange a live meeting with colleagues? No worries, use a messenger.

Although WhatsApp, Facebook, and Snapchat are the most popular messaging apps in the U.S., many people use Google Hangouts, too. In addition to being handy, it can impose a severe danger for irresponsible users, such as kids.

What Is Google Hangouts and What Are the Dangers Behind It?

Google Hangouts is a messaging app that allows users to communicate via text messages, audio, and video chat. It’s a free app that comes baked into most Android-operated phones.

Using Google Hangouts may seem pretty handy. However, the app is riddled with security concerns.

Although it encrypts your chats, it doesn’t use end-to-end encryption. It means that all Hangouts messages are encrypted only when transferred between your device and Google’s servers.

When your messages reach those servers, Google is free to intercept your private communication. And it’s no secret that the corporation receives and fulfills customer information requests, as goes from Google’s Transparency Report.

Another big concern is that Hangouts transfers your images via shared URLs. It means that anyone who has a basic understanding of their work can view your private photos. It especially dangerous for kids and teens who tend to exchange sensitive images thoughtlessly.

As online predators and cyberbullying are growing problems in the U.S., parents need to keep an eye on their kids’ activity on Google Hangouts. In this article, we’ll discuss how parents can view their kids’ Hangouts messages without violating their children’s privacy.

How to Find Out Who Someone Is Talking to On Hangouts: 3 Methods

  • Access a target phone and follow the installation instructions from the email

We recommend that you think wisely before installing a free app on your kid’s device. If your child’s Hangouts messages contain sensitive data, it can be easily leaked and then shared on the Internet.

Do you remember Google Talk? Google launched its first chat service back in 2005. It’s long gone, but your old Google Talk chat logs may still be stored in your Gmail account. Gmail may remember your Google Hangouts chat history, too.

Like an Elephant, Google Doesn’t Forget

By default, Google remembers your conversation histories. Even though Google Talk is long gone, your chat logs from that discontinued service are stored in your Gmail account. Gmail’s search function searches both your chat logs and your emails. If you wanted to keep your chat history, that’s great.

But—if you started using Google Talk in 2005, that means that chat logs from more than 15 years ago are stored in your Gmail account. Do you really want to keep all those old conversations forever, indexed alongside your emails? If so, great. If not, you might want to erase them.

Your chat history also takes up storage space, just like the emails you store in Gmail. That’s another reason you might want to wipe it, just like you might want to delete old and unnecessary emails.

Chat history wasn’t mandatory—at the time, you could disable Google Talk’s chat history feature. However, it was enabled by default, and most people didn’t disable it.

How to Find Google Talk and Hangouts Chat Logs in Gmail

Chat logs are easy to find. On the Gmail website, click the “More” option in the left sidebar.

Click “Chats” to view all the chat logs Gmail is storing in your Google account. You’ll see chat logs from both the older Google Talk and the newer Google Hangouts here.

You can click through your chat logs and read them. The counter at the top-right corner of the messages list will give you some idea of how many chat logs you’re storing in your account.

To search your chat history, use the search box at the top of the page. The “In:chats” term searches chat logs only, omitting emails. For example, you can search for “in:chats bicycle” to search for all the times you mentioned the word “bicycle” in a Google Talk or Hangouts conversation.

How to Delete Your Old Google Chat Logs

If you don’t want to store your entire chat history forever, it’s easy to clear.

While viewing your chat logs, click the checkbox at the top-left corner of the chat log list to select all the chat logs in the current view. Click the “Select all [number] conversations in Chats” link to select every single chat log stored in your Google account.

Then, click the “Delete” button on the toolbar to delete them all. They’ll be sent to your trash. You can either clear your trash immediately, or Gmail will delete them after 30 days.

Note: You can also just delete individual chat logs. Open one and click the “Delete” button on Gmail’s toolbar to erase one.

How to Delete Your Hangouts Conversations

If you’ve used Google Hangouts, you’ll find all the “active” Hangouts conversations on the Google Hangouts website. (Some of these conversations may be from several years ago.)

To delete conversations stored here, hover your mouse cursor over them, click the menu button to the right of the conversation, and click “Delete.” (If it’s a group Hangouts chat, you must click “Leave” instead.)

How to archive a google hangout

Remember that if you have multiple Google accounts—or you have an old one that you haven’t used in a long time—it may have its own chat history. Sign in to your old accounts and look at the Chats section under Gmail to see what Google remembers.

You probably know Google Hangouts as an app that pops up in the corner of a browser tab or on your smartphone, but it’s possible to archive your messages in Gmail too—from here they can be searched, labelled and starred so you can bring up the most important ones whenever you need to.

Conversations only appear in the All Mail section of Gmail if you’ve ticked the Hangout history button in a conversation window: It’s behind the cog icon in chat windows on Gmail, Google+ and the dedicated Hangouts site , as well as in the mobile apps. This is the option enabled by default, so it should already be activated unless you’ve turned it off for certain chats.

To find your conversations in Gmail, click Chats from the list of labels on the left (you may need to choose More labels to see it). You can also type “in:chats” in the Gmail search box—add a word or phrase of your choice if you want to search your Hangouts history for something specific (like an address or phone number someone sent you).

Experience Next-Level Sound

If you’ve got the default conversation view switched on in Gmail’s main settings page, chats appear as one continuous stream; otherwise each message shows up as an independent entity. Using the drop-down menus to the side you can reply to Hangouts with an email or even forward a Hangout to another email address.

Labels and stars are probably of most use when it comes to organizing your chats and these can be applied in the same way as with emails: All the star colors you’ve set up in Gmail are available for chats too, enabling you to quickly highlight ones you don’t want to forget. Labels are helpful for narrowing down searches too—try “in:chats label:labelname” in the Gmail search box, for example.

Sometimes, you wish you hadn’t just pressed “send” on that last message, be it an embarrassing spelling mistake, words said in anger, or a message sent to the wrong person. There are many different reasons you might want to delete a single message that you’ve just sent to someone else. Can you do so on Google Hangouts?

You Get What You Paid for

While many chat apps and services allow you to delete a message, unfortunately Google Hangouts doesn’t. That is, unless you have the paid ‘enterprise’ version known as Hangouts Chat which comes as part of the G Suite service offered by Google to businesses and schools

Despite this having been a requested feature since Hangouts was released back in 2016, Google has refused to allow people to delete single messages. However, considering that the service is going to be shut down by October 2019, it’s understandable that at this stage they are unwilling to add new functionality to Hangouts.

The only workaround for people using the free version is to delete the entire Hangout, which is hardly ideal. If you do delete the Hangout from your side, the person you were talking to will still be able to see all the messages that have been sent so far.

How to Delete a Single Message in Hangouts Chat (G Suite Users Only)

  1. Open your web browser.
  2. Type https://chat.google.com into the browser bar and hit enter, or click on this link, to open up Hangouts Chat.
  3. Choose the contact that you sent the message to and open the chat.
  4. Click on the message.
  5. Click on Delete.

As mentioned above, this is only available on the paid G Suite version, called Hangouts chat. If you’re not sure if this is the one you’re using, chances are that it isn’t.

How to Delete a Hangout Chat on a Computer

  1. Open the web browser on your computer (i.e. Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera).
  2. Type https://hangouts.google.com into the browser bar, and press enter, or click on the link here. This will take you to Google Hangouts.
  3. Click on the speech bubble shaped button on the left-hand side of the browser window to access the list of your current chats.

Then you can use one of the two following methods:

Method 1

  1. Select the chat that you want to delete by clicking on it in the list to the left of your screen. This will open up the conversation on the right-hand side of the screen.
  2. Click on the cog shaped settings button at the top right of the chat window. This will open up the options for the chat.
  3. Click on Delete Conversation. The conversation will be replaced by a confirmation screen.
  4. Click Delete at the bottom right of the window to delete the entire chat.

Method 2

  1. Hover the cursor over the chat that you want to delete.
  2. Click on the ⁝ three dots button to the right of the name of the chat.
  3. Click on Delete.
  4. A new window will appear with a confirmation dialogue. Click on the red Delete button to the bottom right of this window to delete the chat.

Both of these methods will only work to delete the history of a private conversation between you and a single contact. You can’t delete group chats; you can only leave the group. Again, this won’t delete the conversation from your contact’s side of the chat.

You’re History

As frustrating as it may be, it’s sadly not possible to delete a single message from a regular Hangout chat. The best you can do is throw the baby out with the bathwater, although if for whatever reason you want the message to be gone from the person you sent it to as well, you’ll have to ask them to delete it from their end.

Have you ever sent a Hangouts message you regretted? Do you prefer messaging platforms where deleting is an option? Let us know in the comments below.

You can also send instant text messages with Google Hangouts and make video calls. In addition, the text messaging capabilities also let you send your location to recipients, share pictures and videos, and send stickers with the built-in gallery.

From the Google Hangouts app, you’re able to disable notifications for specific numbers, favorite conversations for easier access, and archive conversations to hide them without deleting them.

Google Hangouts Background

When it first started, Google Hangouts was a well-received video chatting application. You could video conference with friends or co-workers easily as a group. Since then, Hangouts morphed to include more features, including sharing and text messaging communication and integrating with Gmail so that you could send an instant message while processing your emails.

Google Hangouts can be a solid option for keeping in touch with friends and colleagues, but sometimes you don’t necessarily want your chat history following you around.

Regardless of the reason, you can easily delete unwanted conversation histories with someone by going into the chat. Just keep in mind that it won’t work with a group chat situation as those cannot be deleted.

In that case, your best option would instead be to leave the group chat.

Here’s what you’ll need to do to delete your message history with someone on Google Hangouts.

Google Hangout is a popular communication method for instant messaging as well as video chat, and it’s definitely rather convenient. Now, it’s important to understand that you can record the meetings that you are having on Google Hangout for further review later on.

Tips Before Recording Google Hangout Interview

In order to do so, you will have to get a few things done. There is nothing overly hard, and everything could be handled without any specific computer knowledge.

  1. You need to turn off all of your unneeded. This is going to enhance the overall performance of your machine and promote better quality. Also, make sure that your notifications are turned off because they might ruin the video.
  2. You should also set the webcam as well as the overall lighting at the room in order to ready the environment for the recording.
  3. Take the noise into proper consideration. In order to minimize it, shut the doors and close the windows – this is vital. You should also ready your microphone. You need to determine whether you are using the inbuilt microphone or a third-party device – in any case, make sure they are ready.
  4. You should also decide the same thing for your camera and ask for permissions when they are needed before you start recording. This is important to avoid any further lawful complications.

Record Google Hangout on Air with YouTube Live

You can use the YouTube Live feature to create a particularly quick event with the Hangouts on Air. You can also create a custom event with the encoder. In order to set up the Hangouts on Air with YouTube Live, you need to make sure that you follow a few steps. They are outlined below.

  1. Make sure that you go to the Live Streaming Events and enter the Creator Studio
  2. Right afterward, you need to create a brand new event. You will find a button that says new live event – that’s what you are looking for.
  3. You should also select the Quick option if you are using Google Hangouts on Air
  4. When you are through with these, you should make sure that you have provided your stream with a convenient title.
  5. After that, you might want to start the whole recording through the button called “Go live now” or enter particular details in order to schedule the same event or another one for later on.
  6. Use Hangouts in order to broadcast it live and make sure that everything is handled perfectly.

Use a Screen Recorder to Record Google Hangouts

Another way to record your meeting is through the regular screen recorder feature. There’s nothing too complicated about it. As a matter of fact, this is without a doubt one of the best things to consider. There are quite a few different software pieces that you can take advantage of, but the one that’s highly recommended is Wondershare DemoCreator.

Step 1. The first thing that you would have to consider doing is to download Wondershare DemoCreator and install it accordingly. This shouldn’t take you more than a few minutes.

Step 2. You should open the application and go for the full feature mode.

Step 3. You should click on the file; record the media and the screen accordingly.

Step 4. you should select that you want to record Google Hangout, set your audio, and click on the record button.

Step 5. make sure to save the recorded file.

Differences between Google Hangout and Hangout on Air

The main difference between those two is that Hangout on Air is being broadcast publically through the YouTube channel that you have. At the same time, Hangout is more or less a private API that’s going to enable you to use it for smaller groups. There is also has chat, document sharing, and video conferencing features. In any case, there are significant differences between both of those, and if you want to ensure that everything is handled privately and in-house, you should opt for Google Hangouts and use a screen record if you want to archive the meeting or the interview, for instance.

At last week’s I/O event, Google announced a revamped, unified messaging replacement for Google Talk called ‘Hangouts’,

An official Hangouts extension for Chrome and Chrome OS is already available to install from the Chrome Web Store. If you’re a Google+ user you’ll also find the new chat experience available from there, too.

But the revamped chat service isn’t enabled by default on GMail for everyone just yet. Google are rolling it out to users in stages.

If you don’t yet have Hangouts in Gmail but want it, here’s how to manually turn it on.

Turn On Hangouts in Gmail

  • Sign in to GMail (note: doesn’t currently work for Google Apps users)
  • Expand the Google Talk box in the left-hand sidebar by clicking the ‘speech bubble’ icon.
  • Click on your chat avatar
  • Select ‘Try the new Hangouts’ option

See the image below if you’re unsure of where it is.

Gmail will instantly reload when you click this option, so if you’re in the middle of something important (i.e. gossip, or reading the latest bit of spam from Amazon) be sure to save, make excuses, etc.

Don’t like Hangouts? You can revert to the “old” Google Talk by following the same steps above but choosing ‘Revert to Old Chat’ at the last step.

When you are making the list of the best apps for messaging and sharing media, not adding Hangouts to the list will be an injustice.

Billions of people use the app daily for their personal use or for their business motives and share a bunch of media on a daily basis.

The good thing about Hangouts is that the app stores the media in your Google account that has been shared through its server. This lessens your work as you don’t have to store the file on your device for future use.

But don’t you think it’s quite messy to keep all the media shared with Hangouts always stored in Google?

I mean, what’s the point in keeping the media transferred 2-3 months ago, or maybe a year ago? Or the media that you very well know is not gonna be of any use now. It’s not just useless to keep the old Hangouts records but it causes a problem when you’re looking for the photo or video in Google that you actually need.

So let’s see how to delete Hangouts photos that are simply useless for you using these simple steps below.

How To Delete Hangouts Photos From Browser (Video)

It is not possible to delete the shared Hangouts photos and videos from inside the Hangouts app. But this doesn’t complicate the deleting process at all. Just a few steps are to be followed and the task is done.

1. Using any browser on your computer system, open the Google Album Archive.

2. Here you will see the different albums consisting of photos. One of the albums will be presented by the name Hangouts. Just click open that folder.

3. Now you will see the list of all the people to whom you have sent the photos on Hangouts. Click the folder for which you want to delete the photos.

Do you think that getting rid of all the photos by deleting the album is a bad idea and you might need some of the photos in the future? How about deleting some particular photos and leaving the others as it is?

Instead of clicking on the 3-dots icon and choosing the option to delete the album, click on the photo that you don’t want anymore. Once the photo gets opened, click on the 3-dots icon at the top-right side and click on Delete photo.

Finally, click on DELETE to move the photo to the trash.

Ever since Google Talk has been updated to Hangouts, users have been able to send pictures to each other over chat making it easier to hold conversations that include transfer of images.

Ever since Google Talk has been updated to Hangouts, users have been able to send pictures to each other over chat, making it easier to hold conversations that include transfer of images. It has now come to notice that the images you share over these Hangout conversations end up in your Google+ Photos section as a separate album.

If you have transferred images over Hangouts with your family and friends over the last few days after the upgrade, you can simply navigate to the “Photos” section on your Google+ profiles and then to the “Albums” section. Images you’ve shared over Hangouts will be stored here conversation-wise. Even if you click on the photo within the chat box, it will open up a Google+ window in your browser in order to display the larger image.

Images from every conversations are saved

The albums are easy to find and will be titled “Hangout: [Contact’s Name] ● [Your Name]” as default. You can change the title if you wish to. The worrying part is that Google+ will contain image backups from your Hangouts even if you explicitly disable automatic back-up within the Google+ app.

While it’s a great move to store away images you’ve shared over Hangouts for future usage, it looks kind of intrusive to save pictures even when you’ve asked Google to not save chat history. Essentially, Google will not save your text messages, but it will save pictures you’ve shared in the particular conversation.

Thankfully, these Hangout albums are set to private by default, so only you can view the pictures you and your friends have shared. The friend you’re having a conversation with will also be able to view this album, on your profile as well as his.

Even while it is going to be very messy trying to find other albums if you’re a power user, this feature might come in handy if you rely heavily on Google Hangouts for important conversations.

Google Classroom acts as a virtual learning space, where teachers can hand out assignments, grades, and feedback to everyone in their class. Meanwhile, students in the class can turn in projects and track their progress along the way.

Then, when the Google Classroom class is over for the semester or school year, it can easily be deleted or archived.

If you’re an instructor, you can archive any of your classes — this is essentially a way of saying the class is over, but preserving all the materials and items. And if you’re the head teacher of a class, you can then delete it too.

Deleting a class will erase all posts and comments, although files can still be accessed by students who have a link to the relevant Google Drive folders.

Here’s how to archive and then delete Google Classroom classes on desktop, iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

How to archive and delete Google Classroom classes on Mac or PC

    To archive a class:

Many people have had situations where you have already said something, but realized that you shouldn’t have said it. But everything has already been said, everything has been heard, so it is impossible to change what has been said.

You can’t change what you said in a live conversation. But in the case of online correspondence, you can change or completely delete what you have written! If you’ve written messages in Hangouts but soon want to delete it, you have that option.

Is there a function to delete messages in Hangouts?

Like any other application, Google Hangouts changes and certain features either disappear or appear. That’s why an update was released in 2019 that added the ability for users to delete chats. Before that, only corporate G Suite users could delete messages.

But the really sad thing is that it became possible to delete messages and chats only for yourself, not for both parties. Even if you delete a dialog with yourself, it will remain with the other party, and they will have free access to it. It seems that the function of deleting messages for both participants of the dialog is unlikely ever to appear.

    Deleting communication history

One of the easiest ways to delete message history is to delete messages from the desktop:

    1. Go to the Google Hangouts website or sign in to your Gmail account and log in to Hangouts from there.
    2. Hover your mouse cursor over the dialog box you want to delete and you will see three vertical dots to the right.
    3. Click on the three dots in the right corner.
    4. Click the Delete button.
    5. Click Delete on the pop-up window to confirm the action.

Also, after clicking on the three dots, you can select Archive to archive the chat. This will mean that the conversation will be removed from the active list and will be archived.

If you just want to hide dialogs that are unnecessary at the moment and may come in handy later, it’s better to just archive them. By adding a chat to the archive, no message from it will disappear for you and you can open it at any time.

    Disabling Conversation History

If you often have to delete conversations, it is more convenient to turn off the call history. If it is disabled, all incoming messages will not linger for long, after reading the application itself will delete them. This can make things a lot easier.

    1. Go to the Google Hangouts site or log in to it from your Gmail account.
    2. Open your conversation and click on the gear icon at the top right. This opens the settings menu.
    3. In the settings, find the Conversation History item and uncheck it.
    4. To make the new settings work, click OK.

After you change your conversation history settings, Hangouts will notify everyone in the conversation. If you want your conversation history to be saved, repeat the process. Check the Conversation History checkbox, and Hangouts will start tracking your conversations again.

But don’t forget that only you will not retain the history of conversations. Other participants in the conversation will also not save them only if they have set such a setting.

Deleting Conversations from the Hangouts Mobile App

The way to delete conversations in the mobile version of Google Hangouts is not particularly different:

    1. Open the Google Hangouts app.
    2. Click on the conversation you want to delete.
    3. Then click on the three dots in the upper right corner.
    4. In the action list that appears, select Options.
    5. Click the Delete Conversation button at the bottom.
    6. To confirm in the warning message that appears, click Delete.

It makes no difference if you delete the conversation on your computer or smartphone, it will be deleted everywhere. It works this way because you delete directly from your Google account, and therefore from your connected devices.

    Benefits of Google Data Backup

Google offers free storage up to 15 GB for each user, but this space is shared by all the applications. Generally, major applications like Gmail, Drive, and Photo occupy the majority of the space and a lesser space is left for other applications.

If the space in your account is shortening, then taking a backup makes more space for new data.

    Final Words

Google Takeout can save the whole data into an output file, but it has very limited functionality to perform a secure backup. When the user selects more applications, then it will take an exhaustive time to create the export file and download it completely. Also, there are no filter options to choose data more accurately.

You must use professional backup software that can select Google Data and save it into multiple formats. The software should allow you to apply filters that can choose only the important files and leave the rest. Also, the software must protect the structure, properties, and metadata of each file so that you can restore them easily whenever required.

How to archive a google hangoutOne of the breakout features of Google+ — and the one I believe will ensure Google’s continued growth — is the seemingly simple Hangout. At first glance, it looks like just a video chat made easy, but once you start looking at the dashboard, its true power becomes apparent.

When you create a Hangout, it can be public or invite-only. If it’s public, it can also be On Air. That means that even if the Hangout is full, it will still be broadcast to anyone who cares to watch. The really great part is that you can archive a recording of the Hangout to your YouTube account as a private video — to share at your discretion.

Think about the potential. A book author could have a Q&A with readers and then embed the resulting YouTube video in his/her blog or social media platforms. Training sessions with cyber-commuting staff could be archived for future new hires. The possibilities are virtually endless.

What about people who are not on Google+ or do not have a webcam? Well, the Big G has that covered as well. There is a relatively new feature that allows those users to dial in from a landline or cell phone. They won’t have video, but they will at least have the option to participate.

Let’s take a quick look at some of the primary ways in which Hangouts can make things both easier and more effective for a business or organization:

    • Much like Skype, OoVoo, and Facetime, Hangouts can allow you to have business meetings with clients no matter how geographically apart you might be. Unlike with the other platforms, you can have up to 10 people in each Hangout, allowing for larger meetings.
    • Product demos can be great for creating sticky content. Use Hangouts On Air to record and archive them to YouTube. Then you can post the link along with the product description or other listings. It also provides a piece of multimedia content for bloggers that might write about said product.
    • Public Hangouts can be a fantastic way to capture attention. One of the major things people love about the Internet is the potential to interact directly with individuals and businesses. It adds a dose of humanity to what might otherwise be perceived as dry marketing. Additionally, if the Hangout is archived to YouTube, participants will probably share the link with friends, as in, “Hey, this is me talking to noted author of a book I love. Go check it out!”
    • Since Google+ is still fairly new, it is notable to be one of the few businesses leveraging it. While there is a good bit of commentary about it being a low-engagement wasteland, I am skeptical of that view. A lot of the content is shared to limited Circles and is not measured. Add in its ubiquity, especially when signed in to any Google properties, and I feel safe in predicting it will be around for awhile. Wouldn’t you like to be on “the cutting edge”?
    • Growing your Circles is also facilitated by using and archiving Hangouts. A notice that they are Hanging Out appears in each user’s stream when they join the video chat. This creates another option for discovery that can draw in new people.

If you want to get started with Hangouts and have no familiarity with them, I advise Serenety Caldwell’s excellent tutorial on Macworld. You might also want to check out Google’s help pages on the subject (which include more recent features such as On Air).

Hangouts is a software application that has been developed and distributed by Google. Originally, it was introduced as a side feature of Google+ but it was later made into a standalone product. Google has been developing this application mainly for enterprise communication. Hangouts now consist of two primary types, Google Hangouts Meet and Google Hangouts Chat.
