How to apply eyeliner men

Perhaps you want to fake a wide-awake appearance or maybe you’re looking to remedy redness or excess oil, but you’ve yet to explore makeup as a solution. Makeup is a great tool to use when you’re looking to get creative, conceal blemishes , or enhance your features—and it’s not reserved for just women. Men, if you want to dive into the world of makeup, but you’re not sure where to begin, let us help you by providing some pointers on subtle makeup techniques that will give you the ultimate confidence boost.

1. Even Your Skin Tone With A Tinted Serum

If you want your makeup look to be subtle yet effective, applying a tinted serum can create a natural, even base. It can cancel out redness and hyperpigmentation and even out your skin tone overall. The L’Oréal Paris True Match Nude Hyaluronic Tinted Serum provides hydration, radiance, and natural-looking coverage to the skin. It’s also easy to apply—simply work the tinted serum into your skin with your hands just like you would with any skin care serum.

2. Brighten Dark Circles With Hydrating Concealer

Dark circles under the eyes can make you look tired. To give your face a brighter, more awake appearance, gently pat in a few dots of a hydrating concealer under your eyes. Use your fingertips to warm up the product and blend it into your skin. It’s important to opt for a hydrating concealer because a matte option could emphasize dryness under the eyes and distract from the fresh, bright look you’re going for. The L’Oréal Paris True Match Eye Cream in a Concealer, 0.5% hyaluronic acid is perfect because it’s a concealer and eye cream hybrid that moisturizes the eye area while also providing coverage for dark circles.

3. Combat Excess Shine With Loose Powder

If you have oily skin or notice that your face looks shiny throughout the day, you can combat excess shine by applying a light layer of loose setting powder. Loose powders are incredibly lightweight which means that if you apply just a bit to your skin, they won’t create cakiness. The L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Sweep & Lock Loose Setting Face Powder is a great option because it’s translucent, meaning that it works for all skin tones. This powder also helps to blur pores and lines, helping to create a smooth finish.

4. Lightly Groom Brows With Eyebrow Gel

Eyebrows are key when it comes to defining the face, and grooming your eyebrows properly can make all the difference. If you have full or unruly brows that you want to give a more polished appearance, try setting the hairs in place with a clear brow gel like the L’Oréal Paris Unbelievabrow Longwear Brow Topcoat, Waterproof Universal Transparent . It’s easy to apply and can keep your eyebrows in place for up to 30 hours. If you have sparse brows that you want to even out or add the appearance of fullness, apply one to two coats of a tinted eyebrow gel.

5. Define Your Eyes With Mascara

If you want to make your eyes pop without fussing with too much eye makeup, applying a coat or two of mascara will add definition in just a few seconds. The L’Oréal Paris Telescopic Original Mascara is great for adding length to your lashes with a natural look. If you prefer to add volume too, the L’Oréal Paris Air Volume Mega Mascara, Lightweight Mega Volume Washable is perfect for you because it adds thickness to the lashes without weighing them down.

How to apply eyeliner men

You can create intricate designs like this, and it's easier than you think!

You've either just discovered that this awesome cosmetic exists, or have finally decided to give it a shot and overcome your fear of pencils near your eyes. Either way, searching online for how to apply eyeliner can be a daunting task. Endless lists of the varieties of eyeliner and different application processes for each can seem overwhelming. It doesn't have to be though. In this article, we're going to take some baby steps and go over the absolute basics of applying eyeliner, and before you know it, you'll be a pro!

Where to Start

First, you have to choose which eyeliner you want to apply. If this is your first time applying eyeliner, it'll be easier for you to do so with a standard pencil eyeliner. These are more forgiving if you have shaky hands or if you're just starting out and mess up a little bit. With a liquid eyeliner, you move your eye, and suddenly there's a whole line across your eyelid, whereas with a pencil eyeliner, there will more than likely be just a tiny smudge.

All you need are:

  • This article
  • A mirror
  • A pencil eyeliner
  • Make-up remover

I use the make-up remover wipes because they're easy, you can use them more than once, and they are miraculously never too wet. Any make-up remover you prefer will work though.

Do not wait until you are getting ready to walk out the door or after you have already applied all your other makeup to do this. You want to make sure you have time to play with it a little bit and get the look you want. For some people, that might happen the first time you ever touch an eyeliner pencil. For others, it might take a few tries. If it takes a few tries, you're just going to wind up wiping off your other makeup in the process of wiping off the eyeliner. If you're on your way out the door, you might feel a bit rushed and that can make this a little more difficult. So, take a minute, turn up some music, and have fun with it!

How to apply eyeliner men

If you tilt your head back slightly and close your eyes just a tiny bit, you can see your upper eyelid, and it's really easy.

How to Position Your Eye

Now that it's time to actually put on the eyeliner, take a seat in front of your mirror (with your laptop, eyeliner, and make-up remover) and look at your reflection. I've never heard of anyone looking straight in the mirror to apply eyeliner. It doesn't work out well. A very common way to apply eyeliner is to tilt your head back and look into the mirror. This way, your eyes are partially closed so that your eyelid is exposed but partially open so that you can see your eyelid.

This isn't easy for everyone to do. Another great way to start out is to close one eye, similar to when you're applying eye shadow, and keep the other eye is open so that you can see what you're doing. After you close the one eye, take the hand you won't be applying eyeliner with and pull the corner of your eye outwards, making the eyelid tighter. If the eyelid is taut, it will be easier to apply the eyeliner.

A third option is a combination of the two. You tilt your head back, looking down, and pull the skin on the outside of your eyelid tighter at the same time. Your eye will still be open, allowing you to see more, and the eyelid will be in a position that makes this pretty simple.

The second method is easier for me to apply pencil eyeliner, while the first is easier for me to apply liquid eyeliner. Try them out and see which one works best for you! (I know it sounds like a lot, but if you try out all three, it really only takes less than about two minutes.)

Applying the Eyeliner

For beginners, there are two basic ways to apply eyeliner. One way is to start by making dots along the upper lid. After you have made the dots, you simply connect them.

The second easiest way is to simply start in the middle of the upper lid and draw the line outward. After that, you start toward the inner corner of your eye and work your way to the middle in small, even strokes until you have done the upper lid.

That Bottom Line You Missed

Once you have put on the eyeliner, it's very common to look in the mirror and realize there is a fine line right above your eyelashes that is completely bare (this is especially likely if you applied it with your eye closed all of the way). That's ok.

The popularity of guyliner, eyeliner for men, is growing as the stereotype that makeup is women-only fades. Choosing the best eyeliner for men is basically the same as choosing the best eyeliner for women; the products are often the same, just repackaged. The first step is to determine what color works best on you: black, brown, or blue. Next, decide between liquid and pencil eyeliner. Lastly, if possible, try on the product before purchasing it to make sure it is the right eyeliner for you.

Most eyeliner products marketed toward men are essentially the same as women’s. While guyliner is gaining popularity, it is still not stocked in the vast majority of makeup stores. If you cannot find eyeliner for men, opt for eyeliner for women instead. Most of the time, it is basically the same as choosing shampoo for women rather than shampoo for men. The product is not different, but the packaging and, in the case of shampoo, scent might be.

The basic eyeliner colors are black, brown, and blue, but there are different shades of those colors in addition to a wide range of other less commonly used colors like red and yellow. In general, the best eyeliner for men complements their eye color. For example, a man with green eyes will probably look best in light to dark brown eyeliner, but some experimenting is necessary. In addition, darker colors are usually reserved for more dramatic looks.

Most cosmetic experts recommend an eyeliner pencil for makeup novices, because liquid eyeliners are more difficult to apply with an unsteady hand. These two types of eyeliner give different effects, however, so the best choice depends on the look you are aiming for. In general, liquid eyeliner resembles wet paint and gives a darker, sharper color. On the other hand, pencil applies a thicker line of makeup and often gives a smudged look, which can be perfect for men who do not like their makeup to look too perfect.

Once you have a good idea of the best eyeliner for you, visit a makeup counter and either ask a salesperson to apply the eyeliner or do it yourself. If you have never applied eyeliner before, it is best to ask a salesperson to do it and let him or her know that you want to learn how. In addition, tell the salesperson what kind of eyeliner for men you are looking for. Makeup salespeople are typically very knowledgeable about their products, how to apply them, and what might look best on you.

This one has me stumped – it looks so easy when they do it in tutorials, but when I try and apply eyeliner, be it pencil, pen or liquid it always just skims the surface of powder eyeshadows and doesn’t work well. For this reason I usually line with dark eyeshadow instead, but this smudges more easily 🙁 Any tips?

I like to run my liquid eyeliner container under hot water to thin it out so it goes on smoother, I also use quite a bit of force (relatively speaking) to apply it.

It's important to make sure your eyeshadow primer/foundation (if you're using it) is the same polarity as the eyeliner as well. Pencils and liquids are oil/alcohol based and may not hold well against a water based primer/foundation as they will repel each other.

Brush on eyeliner. It's very wet, goes over anything. It can be hard to find, NYX used to sell the best. ELF can still be found on Amazon I think.

I actually like using a black eyeshadow, wet an eyeliner brush and dip it in the shadow and then line my eyes. I haven’t noticed it smudging, I get a better line, and it’s easier to wash off later. But that’s what works for me. 🙂

I use a thin angled brush and stamp on eyeshadow in the shape of eyeliner on top of my eyeshadow

Could possibly have to do with either the eyeshadow or eyeliner you're using? My fave eyeliners are the Nyx Epic Ink and the Physician's Formula Eyebooster in Ultra Black, both go on really well over any eyeshadow I've tried to put them over. For pencil I'd say make sure your pencil isn't too dry. I also run pencil liner RIGHT along my lashes, at the very base, which I think might help it transfer because of the texture of the lashes themselves. Gel might also be something to try.

In this article, I will be explaining the details surrounding the application of a traditional type of eyeliner known as Kohl Ithmid. Kohl (كُحْل‎) goes by many different names and spellings such kuhl, kohhel, kohol, cohol, as well as Kajal, Surma or Sormeh ( سرمه ).

Kohl is an oriental eye cosmetic that like other eyeliners is used to mark the perimeter of the eye to make the eyes look bigger. There also exists a type of kohl known as ‘Ithmid’ (a.k.a. Ismid) that has beneficial effects on the eyes, such as providing protection from harsh sunlight by absorbing UV rays. Excessive exposure of UV rays to the eye overtime can cause many eye ailments, such as macular degeneration and cataracts.

This is one main reason why the Bedouins of the desert, men and woman, applied ithmid kohl to their eyes. Likewise, the Ancient Egyptians used kohl to protect their eyes, and to treat ocular-related illnesses. Other therapeutic applications of ithmid kohl includes relieving eyestrain, eye pain, eye soreness, conjunctivitis, and light sensitivity. Ithmid also has the effect of stimulating the eyelashes to grow thicker and longer.

Table of Contents

How to Apply Ithmid

When you want to apply ithmid kohl to the eye, you need the right tool for the job, which is the kohl stick. It is a simply a stick that is bluntly pointed on one end, and rounded bulbously on the other end. Imagine a miniature pool stick, if you will. Alternatively, it is quite common to use a Makhalah, which is a metal kohl container with the application wand going inside as the top of the container.

There are 2 main ways to apply Ithmid kohl to the eyes. You can either apply it to the waterline of the eyes, which is the space between where the eyelashes and eyeball meet. Or alternatively, you can apply the ithmid under and over the eyelashes.

How to apply eyeliner men

Either way, the process to applying the ithmid starts with lightly mixing the kohl stick with the kohl powder, and then dragging the end of the kohl stick on the waterline of the eyes, and/or above & below the eyelashes. The best practice is to apply the kohl to each eye 3 times.

Note that high quality ithmid easily sticks to the applicator wand, and you don’t need to do anything else. However, if you find that your kohl doesn’t stick to applicator, then one simple trick that works is to dampen the stick with some water, lightly wipe it with a tissue to get rid of the excess water droplets, and then mix the stick in the kohl powder. The moisture helps to grab the kohl particles.

On the other hand, if you find that the kohl isn’t properly applying to the face, you may also try splashing your face once with water with a few drops of olive oil, gently drying the face with a towel, and then applying the kohl. The moisture helps the kohl stick on, and the olive oil helps to make the application smoother for crisper and cleaner lines.

EDIT: Although I personally avoid using oil because this causes the ithmid to move away from its place. Oil is better for removing the ithmid or treating dry skin.

Ithmid Quality Determines Where You Can Use it

Where you apply ithmid kohl to your eyes depends on the quality of the kohl preparation. Normally, you can apply eyeliner to the waterline of the eyes, or above and below the eyelashes. But it may be a bit different with kohl. First consider that ithmid is made by grinding up a metallic mineral known as galena (lead sulfide). Some claim that the mineral used instead is stibnite (antimony sulfide), but I found there to be less surrounding evidence for this to be the case.

Regardless, my point is that mineral-based kohl is made by grinding the metallic-stone into a fine powder. If the particles formed are too big, you will scratch and irritate the eye. In that case, you can only apply the ithmid above & below the eyelashes. However, if the particles produced are very small, then there should be no issue with applying the ithmid to the waterline of the eye.

How to apply eyeliner men

You can see that this Ithmid Kohl is not prepared properly, as it has big pieces that cause the powder to shine excessively

You can determine the particle size of the ithmid kohl powder by observing how shiny it is. If the grey ithmid powder has very few sparkling particles, then you know that it has a very small particle size. If on the other hand the ithmid powder is very shiny, then you know that the particle size is quite big and can scratch up your eye. I highly suggest you use the latter type of ithmid powder only above and below the eyelashes.

How to apply eyeliner men

This is a very high quality ithmid kohl that comes from the Hijazi region of Saudi Arabia. Notice how the shining particles are smaller and less in number. The powder is more consistently fine and a lot better for the eye.

In my experience with using different samples of pure ithmid kohl, I found that the particle size of these powders were not small enough to use comfortably on the water line. However, I had virtually no problems if I used the ithmid above & below the eyelashes instead.

But there is a way if you do want to use a rougher quality of ithmid with bigger particles. You have to use a very smooth, dry kohl stick. After dipping it into the kohl, you tap the stick several times, and this shakes off the bigger particles that could irritate the eye. But for this benefit the kohl stick needs to be dry and smooth.

So if you want to purchase and use ithmid kohl on your eyes, my advice is that you use the one that has a very fine consistency. Otherwise, after a couple of weeks of applying ithmid on the waterline, your eyes may become irritated and you would have to take a break from daily use. And one such place where you can acquire genuine ithmid kohl from is – I personally have purchased their Hijazi black ithmid Kohl coming all the way from Medina, and I found it to have a finer consistency compared to my other samples.

If you want to find out more about ithmid, I will write more about its composition, origin, health & medicinal effects in future articles.

While we love the look of dramatic wings, neon water lines, and abstract Euphoria-inspired looks, there’s something about a barely there eyeliner look that will always hold a special place in our hearts. Whether tightlining or traditional lash line application is your method du jour, natural eyeliner instantly adds definition to any eye look, allowing for a more polished result.

That's all fine and lovely, but framing your eyes with a thin strip of eyeliner is easier said than done. That's why we've tapped a celebrity makeup artist to show you the ropes. Ahead, celebrity makeup artist Sandy Linter shares a step-by-step guide to creating a natural eyeliner look.

Meet the Expert

Sandy Linter is a celebrity makeup artist with clients among the likes of Christie Brinkley and Elizabeth Hurley. Her work appears in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and more.

Step One: Choose Your Formula

While you can create stunning eyeliner looks with liquid liner, gel liner, and everything in-between, Linter suggests using a pencil liner if you're going for a natural, barely-there look.

How to apply eyeliner men

Step Two: Prime Your Lids

"Put a shadow base on your lid," says Linter. "Not under the brow, just the eyelid." This helps the eyeliner pencil better glide along your lash line for even, consistent application. The right primer can also help extend the life of your look, keeping the color intact along your lash line.

Step Three: Apply Liner to Top Lash Line in Short, Quick Strokes

Rather than dragging the pencil along your eyelid, Linter suggests more of a connect-the-dashes approach. "Line the eye in tiny, little, short strokes," she says, taking 3-4 sweeps of product to fully line the lash line.

Step Four: Thin the Line You Created With a Pointed Q-Tip

Even a professional makeup artist like Linter finds that her first eyeliner attempt is usually a bit too thick, so she's mastered a genius hack for thinning down the line you've applied by using a pointed cotton swab dipped in moisturizer.

How to apply eyeliner men

"Quite often when I start to line the eye, it gets thick," says Linter. "And then I don't have a barely there eyeliner look. So I take a pointed Q-tip (there isn't a lot of fuzz on the Q-Tip), then take some moisturizer and put it on the back of your hand. Take the tiniest, tiniest little amount [of moisturizer] on the Q-Tip and you just shave it down. It works every time."

Step Five: Touch Up Blank Spots Between Lashes With Your Pencil

"And after you've done your barely there liner look. nestle the pencil in-between the lashes to make sure there's no white spots where the skin is showing between the lashes," says Linter.

How to apply eyeliner men

The question most posed by girls with small eyes is how to make eyes bigger. And we will tell you exactly how. Keep your trusted friend — the eyeliner — handy for this one 🙂 Eyeliner is one of the most important makeup tools that can be used to create different looks. Using an eyeliner, you can make your eyes appear more rounded, larger or sharper depending on your mood. If you know how to apply eye makeup well, you can lift your entire face, making it appear more youthful and energetic. This is precisely why most women (if not all) want to get bigger eyes with makeup. Here we have compiled 5 eyeliner styles for small eyes to make your them look bigger.

How To Make Eyes Bigger Using Eyeliner

Eyeliners can help you master the art of making your small eyes look bigger. Using different types of eyeliners (such as gel liners, liquid liners, and pencil liners) and colors you can create different looks to get your eye makeup game on point. So, here’s how to apply eyeliner for small eyes:

1. Apply White or Flesh-toned Eyeliner on Your Waterline.

How to apply eyeliner men

Black eyeliner can define the shape of your eye as it attracts attention. Since your upper lashes define the upper lash line whether you use an eyeliner or not, kohl on the waterline completes the shape. It closes up your eye to a great extent and makes it appear smaller. However, if you use black eyeliner under the lower lash line and use a white or flesh-toned eyeliner on the waterline, it will open up the eye and create the illusion of bigger eyes. Many people believe that white liner looks a bit harsh so you can apply a flesh-toned eyeliner. It will neutralize any redness of the skin around the eye and make your small eyes look bigger.

2. Apply Dark Eyeliner Away From the Inner Corners.

How to apply eyeliner men

If you have small eyes, you need to start applying dark eyeliner slightly away from the inner corners. If you start applying your dark eyeliner right from the inner corner, it will define the actual shape of the eye and leave no room to create the illusion of bigger eyes. However, if you leave your inner corners and then apply the eyeliner, you can use a shimmery beige eyeshadow or eyeliner on the inner corners. This will brighten up the eyes and make them look bigger. To create a more youthful look, you can run the same shimmery eyeshadow or eyeliner under the lower lash line as well. Known as Ulzzang look in South Korea, this eyeliner trick opens up your eyes instantly.

3. Use the Right Eyeliner Shade to Define Your Upper Lash Line.

How to apply eyeliner men

Depending on your skin tone, you need to choose an eyeliner to define your eyes. For people with lighter skin tones, black can be a harsh color to define the eyes. A medium brown or blue shade may suit them better than black. A dark shade on the eyelids can make the eyes recede and look deeper than they are in reality. A medium brown or blue shade smudged using a brush to softly define the eyes works better. It brings the attention to your eyes without making them look harsh. The overall look also turns out to be more natural. People who have deeper skin tones can use rich brown shades or even black since these colors will not attract any undue attention and perfectly complement the skin tone.

4. Keep the Eyeliner Wing At the Right Point.

How to apply eyeliner men

When you are applying eyeliner, you need to end it at the right point to make your eyes look bigger. If you are not going to apply eyeliner to the lower lash line, do not extend the eyeliner beyond the outer corner of the eye. End the eyeliner wing in such a way that it is at the same angle where the imaginary straight line drawn from your waterline to the end point of your eyebrow would have been. This gives a more feline shape to your eyes (that is cat eyes) and makes them appear more youthful and big. If you extend your eyeliner below this point, it can make your eyes look droopy and tired.

5. Start with a Thin Line and Gradually Make it Thicker Near the Outer Corner.

How to apply eyeliner men

A thick eyeliner that has the same thickness in the inner corner and the outer corner of the eyes only adds depth to the eyes and does not help in any way in creating the illusion of bigger eyes. However, if you start with a thin line in the inner corner and gradually build the thickness as you come to the outer corner, it creates the illusion of wide-open (bigger) eyes easily. It is easier to create this look using a liquid liner but you can also use a gel liner or pencil liner. This technique does need a little bit of practice but once you master it, you can make your eyes look bigger within minutes. If you have eyes that are close together, this technique will also help make them appear further apart. If your eyes are wider apart, you can start drawing the line right from the inner corner and do not make it too thick as you go towards the outer corner.

How your eyeliner looks depends a lot on the type of eyeliner you are applying — pencil, gel or liquid. So, make sure you know the latest eyeliners available in India and which ones to use for which look.

Another important factor to make your eye makeup look flawless is to hide any blemishes or dark circles in the under eye area. Dark circles can make your eyes look small and tired which is the main reason why you need to apply a brightening concealer to cover the darkness. If you have pigmentation, you can use a color corrector first and then apply the concealer on the under eye area for a flawless look. Finish your look after curling your lashes and applying a couple of coats of your favorite mascara to open up your eyes even more.

One of the most classic forms of eyeliner is pencil eyeliner. It’s safe to say this eye makeup product should be a staple in your makeup bag, but if you don’t know how to apply pencil eyeliner, it can be a bit overwhelming to bring its pointy tip close to your eye. That’s why we’re here to help. Below, we’re sharing our top tips—including how to sharpen eyeliner—on applying pencil eyeliner, so you can get a seriously stunning eye makeup look. Read on!

First and foremost, it’s important to make sure you’re working with a sharpened eyeliner pencil. A dull point can make it difficult to create precise, sleek lines! To sharpen your pencil eyeliner, all you need is to pick up a sharpener. Eyeliner sharpeners come in different sizes depending on the eyeliner you’re using—find one that’s a match for your pencil, and you should be good to go. The process is the same as sharpening a school pencil: Place the tip in the hole and twist until it’s sharpened to your liking.

There are also mechanical or retractable eyeliner pencils that simply twist up. If you hate sharpening your eyeliner, these might be the move for you.

If you’re lining your upper lid, it’s important to gently hold your skin so that it’s firm while you apply your pencil eyeliner. To do so, place your pointer finger on the end of your brow and hold your skin taut without pulling at your face.

Creating a sleek, straight line can be intimidating, but you don’t have to do it in one sweep! Instead, create a few dots along your lash line where you’d like to apply your pencil eyeliner. Then, connect the dots little by little for a flawless line. This is a foolproof method for when you’re trying something a bit more adventurous, like a wing!

Nobody’s perfect, and even using the dot method above, you may make a mistake or two when applying your pencil eyeliner. Luckily, a bit of micellar water and a cotton swab is all you need for any quick fixes. Simply dip the tip in the L’Oréal Paris Micellar Cleansing Water Complete Cleanser Waterproof – All Skin Types and wipe away any offending smudges as needed.

Pencil eyeliner doesn’t have to be reserved for your upper lash line. In fact, it’s actually a great option for lining your waterline. Use the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof, Up to 24HR Pencil Eyeliner in Nude to do just that. The nude shade will help create the appearance of brighter and wider eyes.

The trick to increasing your pencil liner’s staying power? Setting it with a coordinating eyeshadow. Yup, just like you set your face with a powder, using eyeshadow to set your liner will keep it from fading or smudging. Use a matte shadow and a thin, flat eyeshadow brush to press the eyeshadow on top of your line.

Who said you have to stick to neutral eyeliner shades? Swap out a traditional black or brown hue for an option that’s more out-of-the-box, like the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof, Up to 24HR Pencil Eyeliner in True Teal or Purple, to spice up your makeup look.

For the easiest smoky look ever, pencil eyeliner is just what you need. Use it to line your lower lash line, then before it dries, take a cotton swab or your fingertip and gently smudge the line for a smoked-out effect.

Don’t feel like wearing noticeable eyeliner but want to give your lashes an added boost? You can use the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof, Up to 24HR Pencil Eyeliner in Black to tightline your upper lash line. This will fill in any spaces between your lashes for an instantly fuller-looking fringe. Need we say more?

No skills? No problem. Eyeliner, while maybe not as easy-breezy to apply as say, lipstick, is quite easy to master once you get the hang of it. The great thing is, there are so many kinds nowadays. Thick. Thin. Smudgy. Precise. Gel. Kohl. Liquid. Take your pick!

The trick to applying eyeliner, especially when you’re just getting the hang of it, is: expect mistakes. Roll with it, don’t get discouraged, and always have patience and q tips on hand!

Newbies should apply eyeliner before mascara and eyeshadow, to allow for smudges and mistakes, which are harder to fix if you’ve got on other makeup that you don’t want to mess with. Don’t worry about creating a perfectly smooth, straight line—bumps and uneven lines are easily fixable with a dash of makeup remover on a q-tip.

Get close to the mirror and trace a line from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner. Always keep the line as close to the root of your lashes as possible.

For a natural look, keep the eyeliner line thin and in a subtle color, like brown eyeliner. This will define the eye without screaming “I’m wearing eyeliner!”

We’re big fans of smudgy eyeliner and precise eyeliner looks, and think everyone should be equally adept in both. Smudgy eyeliner is rocker-cool and so easy to apply, since all mistakes will get blended away into said diffused, smoky line. Softer, easily blended formulas like eyeliner pencils are perfect for this look.

Precise eyeliner can be a thick line like a cat-eye, or a subtle line that blends right into your lashes. Certain formulas lend themselves better to this look, like liquid liner. It’s transfer-proof, aka less prone to smudging and melting, and will stay fresh-looking and clean-lined all day.

Lining the upper lash line simply defines your eyes, and draws attention to them. It also gives the impression of more eyelashes. Eyeliner is basically meant to mimic a lush, thick fringe of eyelashes, and that fantasy falls flat when there are tell-tale flesh colored gaps between your eyeliner and your lashes.

Lining the lower lashes is so cool—a real glamour look. The goal is to line right along the waterline. The waterline is that sliver of exposed skin between the eye and the lashes. It’s a sensitive area, so always be gentle and use only the cleanest tools here. For this look, an eyeliner pencil is the best option, the softer and more pigmented the better. Kohl formulas are fantastic here, too. It will deposit a gorgeous, saturated line of color on the lash line and not bleed into the eye like a liquid liner will. Take a clean, freshly sharpened pencil and gently glide it along the waterline, from the inner to the outer corner. Line the entire waterline, not just the outer corners. Don’t expect color to last as long as it does on the upper lash line. You’ll most likely have to re-apply eyeliner throughout the night to keep that intense, highly defined line, but such is the price of beauty!

If you have smaller eyes, you’ll want to avoid lining your entire eyes, since doing so can make them look even smaller. Instead, apply eyeliner on the outer half of your eyes, making sure to blend in the starting point.

While eye shadow and mascara are a must for any eye makeup look, eyeliner can take things to the next level with just a few simple swipes. Of course, those simple swipes don’t seem so simple when you’re an eyeliner novice. That’s where the right applicator comes into play. Use a felt tip eyeliner if…you’re not an eyeliner expert. Like we mentioned, a felt tip eyeliner will make lining your eyes much easier if you’re new to liquid formulas. The precise applicator will keep mess-ups at bay.

Use a felt tip eyeliner if…you’re short on time. In a rush? You certainly don’t want to spend extra time navigating a brush tip or learning how to use a separate eyeliner brush to line your eyes. Felt tip eyeliner gives you more control, allowing you to line your eyes quickly.

Use a felt tip eyeliner if…you love convenience. Who wants to carry around a separate eyeliner brush? A felt tip eyeliner has everything you need in one product. Pop one in your purse or makeup bag for an eyeliner option that’s always ready to go.

Ready to put one of the above felt tip eyeliners to use? Here’s how!

Step #1: Pop off the cap. Prep your felt tip eyeliner by removing the cap and exposing your applicator.

Step #2: Start small. Position the felt tip at your inner corner, then begin by creating a small, thin stroke. You can always make it thicker!

Step #3: Build out your liner. Continue to line your lash line by connecting short, steady strokes rather than drawing a single continuous line.

Bonus: Wing it out. If you choose, extend your line past your inner corner to create a sharp, precise wing.

How to apply eyeliner men

Powder eyeliner adds definition along the eyelashes which makes the eyes a more prominent facial feature.

If you are wondering how to apply eyeliner correctly, rest assured that it is not difficult when you use the right tools and methods.

There are many different types of eyeliners available commercially, including liquid eyeliner, gel eyeliner and pencil or kohl liners. Increasingly popular are the permanent liners or eyeliner tattoo.

Yes, the world of eyeliners has moved on since it was first worn thousands of years ago in the Ancient Middle Eastern countries in the form of black kohl heavily applied lining the eyes.

It was thanks to the discovery of Tutankhamen’s tomb in the 1920s that eyeliner was discovered and why it has been a much-loved makeup essential for men and women ever since.

Both feared and loved, it is a cosmetic product that quite often divides public opinion.

Eyeliner Styles

Whilst the traditional lining of the eyes remains, the different techniques through the ages have brought us some memorable eyeliner styles which have also become symbolic of an era, culture or fashion trend.

Where would Punk or Goth Fashion be without the heavy black eyeliner?

The 1950s saw the use of black eyeliner on the upper lid only and worn with a dramatic red lipstick. A stunning look that keeps coming back and is an iconic look.

The 1960s Mary Quant days of liquid black eyeliner would not have existed and subsequently not brought us so many iconic looks and fashion statements of that era that are legendary had it not been for this eye classic.

As a Make Up Artist, eyeliner (along with mascara) is my must-have, much loved cosmetic essential both on a professional and personal level.

I could live without the other color cosmetic products but for me, eyeliner and mascara work wonders for the eyes no matter what shape, size or eye color.

How to apply eyeliner men

Beauty lovers have been all about winged eyeliner since Cleopatra started sporting a cat-eye in ancient Egypt. The pin-up girls of the ’40s, fans of Brigitte Bardot in the ’50s, Madonna enthusiasts of the ’80s, and Taylor Swift fans of today lean heavily on a crisp winged eye look (via Byrdie).

Who would’ve thought a little line above our peepers could cultivate such an overarchingly flirty and elegant look. Not all winged looks are created equal, though, and small variations make big differences in the outcome of a cat-eye. Additionally, every eye is uniquely shaped and different looks work best with certain shapes, so what is the perfect technique for the architecture of your eyes? Let’s dive in.

How to apply winged eyeliner for almond-shaped eyes

How to apply eyeliner men

Most eyeliner techniques can be applied on almond-shaped eyes, but if you want to get the most flattering look try this: Start at the inner corner of your eye and draw a thin line toward the outer, build a thicker line once you reach the outer third of the eye, then draw a line from the outer corner of your eye up to join the end of the line you just made. Finally, fill in the outer triangle you just made. Add a little mascara to the look and you’re ready for whatever your day (or night) may bring (via Beauty & the Boutique).

The best winged eyeliner for round eyes

How to apply eyeliner men

Can you see around the iris of your eye on both the upper or lower portion? Then you have round eyes. For more circular eyes, you can start from the outside corner just above your eye and with an angled brush and liner pot (or a liquid liner draw a line downward toward the outer corner), then continue inward and finish at the center of your eye (where your pupil lines up). The cool thing about not lining your entire eye is you can use bold colored eyeliner without it being too overpowering (via Good Housekeeping).

Perfect winged eyeliner for hooded eyes

How to apply eyeliner men

Is it hard to see your eyelid crease when your baby blues (or greens or browns) are open? Then you probably have what would be classified as hooded eyes. Unfortunately, it seems like there is a general lack of tutorials online for folks with eyes this shape, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a lovely winged look, too. It’s actually really simple: First create the outer wing tip where the hood of your lid starts, then apply a liner toward the inner corner of your eye with thin strokes. For a subtle look keep the line thin, or — you guessed it — layer on more liner for a bolder look.

Use this winged eyeliner technique for monolids

How to apply eyeliner men

If you have monolids, you may have run into some trouble trying to perfect a cat-eye, but not all is lost because we found the best technique for your eye shape. Floating eyeliner is a great option for you. Instead of using loads of eyeliner to create a look, you can simply draw a line where your eye creases when it’s open. If you are feeling really thrifty with your liner, you can save by just lining where the cat-eye lines up when your eye is open (via Allure).

How to apply winged eyeliner for small eyes

How to apply eyeliner men

Are you sporting smaller eyes? Then try this: Line your top lash line, then do the outer third of the bottom lash line and slowly taper up toward the top line. A thinner line often accentuates smaller eyes best, but there’s never anything wrong with going bold for the winged liner look (via Total Beauty).

Above all, remember that makeup is about expression and you shouldn’t feel limited by your eye shape. It’s all about what look you like for you.

How to apply eyeliner men

Let’s get one thing straight: You’re gorgeous and the “wrong” eyeliner isn’t going to change that. But applying eyeliner in a way that flatters your eye shape and highlights your best features will help you look even better—and feel super confident. So we asked Vanessa Eckels, a senior makeup artist with Hourglass Cosmetics, and celebrity makeup artist Kristofer Buckle, who has a namesake makeup line and a client list that includes Mariah Carey, Jessica Chastain and Christina Aguilera, to weigh in with their thoughts. Here, they offer their best (translation: easy) eyeliner tips that you’ll want to start applying on the regular.

How to apply eyeliner men

Your celeb eye twin: Taylor Swift; America Ferrera

Keep your eyeliner soft and smoky, says Buckle. Liquid liner can create harsh borders around your eyes and make them look even smaller. With a pencil liner, begin your line a little out from the eyes’ inner corners—where your eyelashes start to get thicker—and draw to the outer corner. Then, create another soft line on the bottom, but starting from the middle of the eye out. Finishing with a flesh-toned pencil on your bottom waterline can open up your eyes and make them appear bigger.

How to apply eyeliner men

Your celeb eye twin: Sarah Jessica Parker; Anna Paquin

The trick is to draw attention away from the inner corners of your eyes. Start at the middle of your top lash line, and apply pencil eyeliner outward so that you’re only lining the outer half of your eyes, says Buckle. As for the bottom, apply eyeliner to the last quarter of your eye. Another helpful trick: Extend your eyebrows a little at the ends with a brow powder. It creates the illusion that your eyes are farther apart.

How to apply eyeliner men

Your celeb eye twin: Gabrielle Union; Amanda Seyfried

Use liquid or pencil eyeliner to apply a clean line starting at the inner corner of your eye to the outer corner, says Buckle. You’ll want to avoid a smudged or blended look. Winged eyeliner tends to pull your eyes apart even further, but that doesn’t mean the look is completely off limits. Just keep the wing short and draw the wing up towards the end of your eyebrows, instead of long and out toward your temples.

How to apply eyeliner men

Your celeb eye twin: Sandra Oh; Jenna Ushkowitz

Go for a winged look with a line that gradually gets thicker towards the outer corners of the eyes, says Eckels. If your eyeliner smudges (as they often do with monolids), try a liquid or gel liner since they’ve got great staying power. This eyeliner look is fairly basic, so to create more depth and dimension, just layer your eye shadows. Start with a darker shadow close to the lash line and work with lighter shades as you move higher up the eyelid toward the brow.

How to apply eyeliner men

Your celeb eye twin: Beyoncé ; Sofia Vergara

The almond-shaped eye has carte blanche when it comes to liner, says Buckle. But a classic cat-eye always looks great. Using a liquid liner, start a thin line on the upper inner corner of the eye and let the line get thicker as you move to the outer corner of eye. The wing exaggerates the angle of the eye and adds some drama. For a softer look, go with a classic smoky eye in soft browns or taupe.

How to apply eyeliner men

Your celeb eye twin: Mila Kunis; Susan Sarandon

Using a neutral-colored eyeliner like a brown or taupe is super flattering for big eyes, says Eckels. The softer shade still highlights the eyes without being too bold, so you can line both the upper and lower lash lines. Creating a winged look with liquid or gel is a favorite of Eckels, or you could use gel or pencil and blend out the line with a smudge brush for a softer effect. Oh, and if you’re trying to make your eyes look smaller, line the full upper and lower lash lines in a dark shade.

How to apply eyeliner men

Your celeb eye twin: Mindy Kaling; Cameron Diaz

A smoky look can make eyes look more sunken in, says Eckels, so stick with a thin, clean line that’s very close to your lash line (gel or liquid works great for this). In addition to liner, sweep a champagne-colored eye shadow across the lid, recommends Buckle. “You want to keep dark colors away from the crease and reflect as much light into that area as possible.”

How to apply eyeliner men

Your celeb eye twin: René e Zellweger; Blake Lively

Those with hooded lids often find that eye makeup on the lid is more prone to smudging, says Eckels. Using a gel liner (liquid won’t work and pencil is too creamy), apply to the upper lash line at the very root of the lash from underneath. This gives great definition, but also avoids the potential smudging issue. Eyeliner doesn’t stand out as much with this particular eye shape, so what you do with your lashes is just as important, says Buckle. Use several coats of volumizing mascara or try falsies.

When I tell people where my parents are from I always get the same response: “Oh, but you don’t look Afghan”, and then I just smile awkwardly and nod like “yup, that is my ethnicity…no, no I am not joking.”

This makes me curious as to how others expect Afghans to look like and the image they have in their minds. So I pretended that I wanted to know a little more about Afghans and a little more about their culture–I went to Google. As I started my search, one of the suggestions in the dropbox stated “why do Afghan men wear eyeliner?”. To be honest when I read that suggestion, I chuckled a little.

What? Haha, eyeliner ?!

I imagined a young teenage girl having seen Afghan men on the news with eyes smokier than hers and wondered “why do they wear makeup?”. Well my dear, do not fret, he did not copy your Covergirl look.

You see, it is not eyeliner…it is surma, pronounced suur-mah. It is like this coal/rich-black color powder that you apply, with the stick provided, inside your eye. It sounds complicated but it really is not. It is made from special rocks and minerals which are believed to improve vision (there is also a religious component to surma). Surma has been used for centuries and is found in many Central Asian and Middle-Eastern countries.

How to apply eyeliner menHow to apply eyeliner menHow to apply eyeliner men

Many mothers apply surma to their newborns so that they have strong vision and because religiously it is good, many young preteen/teen girls apply it to look pretty since it so closely resembles eyeliner, and then there is the men. The majority of males who you see wearing surma tend to be from the village area ; you would not see men from the city or urban areas wearing surma. The only reasons men from the villages wear it is in order to have strong/good vision and because religiously, it is considered good. Which is why if you see Afghan people on the news, for instance, not a lot of them are wearing glasses. This natural product has been used for centuries and has minerals that improve eyesight.

Along with health benefits, there is also a religious aspect attached to wearing surma. It is known to be religiously beneficial when worn on Friday night. Similar to how Sunday is the Holy Day for Catholics, Friday is to Muslims. On Fridays, it is believed that if you wear perfume and surma then God will be watching you. Not that the Afghan people do not wear perfume regularly, but on Friday’s it is considered to be more significant, religiously.

So to sum up on this surma “timeline”, almost everyone in Afghanistan wears surma because of the health and religious benefits, BUT at around age six or seven the males who live in the city stop wearing surma. On the other hand, the men who live off in far away villages continue to wear it.

So before you call child protective services on these people on how they put eyeliner on their young children, remember, it is not eyeliner; on the contrary, it is part of our culture.

Here I am as a baby wearing surma:

How to apply eyeliner men

If you’ve ever watched a makeup artist work their magic, you know they have an infinite number of tricks up their sleeves . Such techniques might appear to come as second nature to the pros, but for us, it’s a totally different story — especially when it comes to applying eyeliner . To help us achieve flawless eyeliner application every time, we learned a few tricks of the trade and are sharing the wealth of knowledge with you, ahead.

Get Super Close to the Lash Line

This is one of the biggest eyeliner challenges. If you don’t get close enough to the lash line, you lose the intensity you were trying to create with eyeliner. “Always make sure to get close to the lash line, leaving no gaps,” says pro makeup artist Colleen Runne . To make the job a little easier, consider using an eyeliner with a tiny tip, like the NYX Professional Makeup Epic Wear Liquid Liner or the Lancôme Drama Liqui-Pencil Eyeliner .

Don’t Apply It in a Line

Creating the perfect line in one sweep is hard — Runne knows a better way: “A lot of women think they have to make one single line with the eyeliner. Rather, you can do a series of small strokes across the lash line, kind of like a connect-the-dots sort of thing.” You’ll make fewer mistakes and end up with a more even application.

Apply Eyeshadow as a Guide

To get a soft, clean liner look, Lancôme national makeup artist Ricardo Costales says to first apply a thin layer of eyeshadow. This will help the eyeliner glide on to your lid, allowing you to create a soft line. “It makes the eyeliner last longer, too.”

Mix it Up Without Starting Over

You can switch things up and take your look from day to night with one simple addition. “To change an eyeliner look without redoing your makeup, apply a bold or brighter shadow on top of your brown or black liner,” says Costales. “Mixing it together will help you create an edgy, more dramatic look.”

How to apply eyeliner men

Eye makeup is one of the most sorted and easiest ways to look beautiful for women all across the world without having to devote a major chunk of their time for this routine. Whereas for some it comes naturally, most the beginners struggle with putting a perfect eyeliner of their upper and lower lashline/waterline.

So I have stated few steps in this blog post and a detailed video where you get step by step breakdown and learn how to apply eyeliner, perfect for beginners.

Two very easy ways to apply liquid eye liner on the top lashline. A lot of us have issues in putting liner. Some of us cannot get a symmetry on both the eyes, for some the hand is not steady and keeps shaking.

1. Start with small strokes from the centre

2. Use sticky notes to get perfect wing of the eye liner

3. Use a pencil/felt tip liner if liquid liner seems a bit difficult to use.

4. Rest your elbow on a table to get a steady hand while applying the liquid liner.

5. Since liquid liner has a fine tip, it becomes extremely easier to draw a fine wing or cat eyes using a liquid eye liner.

6. A liquid eye liner requires some practice so invest in a good quality eyeliner thats not very expensive and start practicing. Make mistakes and perfect your art of applying eye makeup.

7. To accentuate the look of the eyeliner do not forget to apply kohl pencil to the tightline and finish the look with a coat or two of mascara.

Graphic eyeliner, otherwise known as negative space eyeliner, is a brand new hot makeup trend that is revolutionizing the realm of eyeliner application. A step up from the beloved trend of winged eyeliner, graphic eyeliner includes sharp lines of eyeliner that are detached to create a dramatic, modern look that can be worn as part of an everyday look or for special occasions.

How to apply eyeliner men

There are many different common graphic eyeliner designs, including double lines, dots, angles, and more. Graphic eyeliner is a fun way to spice up your standard eyeliner routine, but it can be difficult to apply, especially for the beauty beginner. Read on to discover several helpful tips on how to graphic eyeliner flawlessly without slip-ups or frustration.

1. Choose the Right Formula

There’s really no right or wrong formula when it comes to graphic eyeliner application. It all comes down to which formula you feel most comfortable using. Powder, gel, and liquid liners are all on the table for applying graphic eyeliner.

Powder eyeliners work best for graphic liner looks that do not need to be too precise and can have a smudged, blended finish. The Laura Mercier Tightline Cake Eye Liner is a richly pigmented pressed powder eyeliner that is great for graphic eyeliner application.

Gel eyeliners are a great choice for dramatic graphic eyeliner looks that require a dark and obvious liner for best results. Gel eyeliner can help create thick lines, such as those in angled winged eyeliner. An excellent gel liner for graphic eyeliner application is the Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner. It won’t smudge or run throughout the day and will maintain its dark and dramatic color all day long.

Liquid eyeliner is usually your best bet when it comes to graphic eyeliner. While it can be difficult to wield and control for beauty beginners, liquid liner is able to create precise lines that are perfect for graphic eyeliner and cannot be achieved using gel or powder liner. Liquid eyeliner is best for graphic eyeliner that includes double lines, detached lines, or any other design that requires intense precision. A great, long-lasting liquid eyeliner is the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner.

2. Hold Your Skin

When you apply graphic eyeliner, the designs are often intricate and complex. They require great control and intense precision to achieve the desired results. In order to apply graphic eyeliner well, you need to transform your eyelids into a smooth canvas for you to work with.

A great trick to use when applying graphic eyeliner is holding the skin of your eyelid with one hand while you apply eyeliner with the other. Use your index and middle fingertips to pull the skin of your eyelid just under your eyebrow up and out toward your temple. This trick helps hold your eyelid skin taut while you apply your graphic eyeliner in order to prevent skips and slip-ups in your liner.

3. Use Dots and Dashes

If you try to draw double-sided cat eye graphic liner in one smooth, straight line, it is very likely that you will end up with–well, not a smooth, straight line. Trying to draw complicated graphic eyeliner designs with one swoop of your brush is a feat you shouldn’t attempt, especially because it’s unnecessary.

Instead of trying to draw one fluid line, use dots and dashes to outline your design. Then, use thin lines to fill in your outline until you reach the thickness you want for your liner.

4. Q-Tips Are Your Friend

When you first start to apply graphic liner, and most-likely even after you’ve been doing it for a while, everything is not going to go as planned. You’ll likely end up with crooked lines, smudges, and other mistakes that need to be fixed before you leave the house.

To use a Q-tip to fix your mistakes without smudging the rest of your eyeliner and having to start all over from scratch, twist the cotton at the end of a Q-tip into a thinner point. Dampen the cotton tip with liquid makeup remover, and gently swipe it over your mistakes to loosen the makeup. Then, use the other, dry end of the Q-tip to wipe the messed-up makeup away without disturbing the rest of your design.

5. Don’t Forget a Primer

Eyeshadow primer is always important, but it is especially vital when you wear graphic eyeliner. Even if you don’t plan to wear any eyeshadow with your graphic liner look, you need to layer the area to which you plan to apply your eyeliner with eyeshadow primer. If you don’t, the natural oils on your eyelid will inevitably cause your eyeliner design to run and smudge, making you look like a wounded gutter raccoon instead of a dramatic, sophisticated rockstar. An excellent invisible eyeshadow primer to use under graphic liner is the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Original.

Graphic eyeliner doesn’t have to be an intimidating trend you’re afraid to touch. Use the tips in this post to achieve seamless graphic eyeliner every time without a struggle.

Hi guys, I’m Jasmine, Cosmo’s new beauty intern. I recently finished my third year at Northeastern University, and I’m currently living in New York and working at my dream job, surrounded by fabulous beauty products and great editors. Obviously, I’m obsessed with all things beauty, so I thought it would be fun to share my favorite beauty trend right now: the sultry cat eyeliner look.

It was all over the fall runways and most of young Hollywood has sported the effect on the red carpet, including Lauren Conrad who recently stepped out with this dramatic version:

How to apply eyeliner men

I’ve worn liquid eyeliner (the secret weapon to a perfect cat-eye) practically every day since the seventh grade. However, most of my girlfriends won’t even go near the stuff out of fear that it’s too difficult and messy to apply. But it doesn’t have to be so scary. With my tips and a little bit of practice, you can get the perfect line.

First, choose the applicator. My personal favorite is the felt tip, since it’s easier to wield than a brush version (which requires the steady hands of a neurosurgeon to apply), and it delivers a darker, richer pigment than a marker pen.

Now (gently) stretch your eyelid at the outer corner so it’s taut. Start your line at your inner corner and stay as close to your lashes as possible. Instead of drawing one straight, create a few dashes. Then try to connect them. With practice, you’ll eventually be able to apply it in one quick swipe.

If you want to create a winged-out effect, flick the line up at the end. The trick is to use a light hand so you don’t end up looking Amy Winehouse. And if you mess up, just wipe it off with a Q-tip and some makeup remover and try again!

A beautifully lined eye adds sophistication and style to any make-up look, so this technique is well worth the effort! It takes a little practice to master the technique, so try these useful tips.

Store your liquid eyeliner next to your make-up remover (as a reminder to practise regularly) and each evening before removing your make-up, practise the application. This way you don’t need to worry about messing up your look, as you are about to wash off anyway!

The eyes are so much easier to apply make-up to if you are able to move the mirror from above and below the eyes, so don’t just use a wall-mounted mirror. Adjustable mirrors are a prerequisite for liquid lines!

A fine tip, firm-hair brush is the key to a perfect line. Take a trip to an art supply store and invest in a pointed tip art brush in Size 0 or Size 00. They’re not expensive and may be the solution to those bumpy edges in your line!

1. Transfer the eyeliner from its applicator to your art brush.

2. Start with the upper lash line and position the mirror beneath your nose, lift your chin high and apply as close as possible to the top lashes while stretching the skin a little outward. Work from the inner eye corner to the outer eye corner.

3. Dip a cotton bud into a little eye make-up remover, pinch the head of the bud into a flat tip and use the bud to even out any ‘wobbles’ on the line before the line dries completely.

4. (This step is optional) Now holding the mirror slightly above the eye, apply the liner to the lower lid, but only at the outer corners of the eye. Immediately after, use a cotton bud to blend the liner towards the center of the eye, gradually softening to no visible line. You shouldn’t see a solid line on the lower lid, but you need to apply some darkness to the corners to balance the upper lines.

5. Extend the eyeliner from the outer corners in a diagonal, upward ‘tick’, not longer than your own eyelashes. This extension is thickest at the corner of the eye and thins to a fine point (just like the end of your eyelashes).

6. Wash your art brush after use and store upright in a glass or jar.

Dramatic eyeliner can be as effective with nude eyeshadow applications as dark sultry eyes. It’s ideal for evening wear, especially with extra layers of mascara to the upper outer eyelashes.
