How to apply brow gel

How to apply brow gel

You might know how to use brow gel already. Maybe you haven’t tried it and you’re just not sure how to get started. I have met people who are at all different levels of expertise when it comes to this. I do know that I am always learning and that will always be the case. I also have a passion for showing people how to use these products. I hope that you find something here that you can use.

The Basics of How to Apply Eyebrow Gel

Start your artwork with the perfect canvas so first go through your regimen of cleaning, toner and moisturizer if you use these. The first step should begin with applying your foundation. Then it’s on to creating those killer eyebrows. Just about everyone has done this before, but also just about everyone can up their game with a few tips.

You’ll want to begin your new art project with a clean canvas. Assuming that you’ve done any tweezing or threading required you can begin to prep your eyebrows either using a brush or even a clean spoolie. Whatever works for you. If you’ll notice in magazines, the effective look is to push your eyebrows slightly upwards and outwards.

Then you can begin to apply the eyebrow gel. Some people choose to use a small, stiff brush to get started. Begin at the bottom of your eyebrows and work your way upwards. You don’t want to try to do this too quickly. Short strokes are better and it’s much easier to apply more than it is to apply less. Start small and then work your way up.

How to apply brow gelUpwards and Outwards!

One thing that you really don’t want to do is have the gel go beyond the outline of your eyebrows. Save the shaping of the eyebrows for the tweezing and threading mentioned before. Just like you shouldn’t go beyond the outline of your eyebrows, you’re going to achieve the best look if you apply the brow gel evenly throughout the entire eyebrow at this point.

The application isn’t uniform throughout the entire brow. It makes more sense to apply a little less in the center and a little more right where your eyebrow arches and at the ends of your eyebrows. Be extra careful with the part of your eyebrow that is closest to your nose. You definitely don’t want to start too abruptly here with a lot of gel. Your eyebrows will maintain a more natural look if you go very lightly over the first few hairs in that area.

Conversely, there is a trend lately called ombré which refers to a gentle shading at the inside edge of the eyebrow. It started as an eyebrow tattoo technique but has become quite popular for regular gel application. Our beauty experts are split down the middle on whether they like this better or the more classic technique. This ombré shading look can be achieved using the back end of the brow brush by slowly working a small amount of the gel back towards the inside of the face.

How to apply brow gelThe Ombré Shaded Look

To finish off, it is best to use a good liquid concealer. If you are able to match your skin tone you can work towards a natural style with good contrast to clean up the edge of the brow. It’s also common to use a slightly lighter shade to increase the contrast, to achieve a more pronounced and dramatic look.

You can play around with it to find out what works best for you. One thing I would especially recommend is having good products in general but particularly the brow brushes. Good ones will make the job so much easier!

How to apply brow gel

Brow gel is an essentiality for those who want to appear groomed in any party or function. Most individuals use gels, creams, mousse, hairspray and other accessories to keep their hair styled but hardly anyone looks out for their eyebrows. Your eyebrows, especially if they are thick, can either accentuate or devaluate your personality. Therefore, using a brow gel can be extremely helpful in adding that much needed groom to your outlook.

Select the type of brow gel that suits you best. You will find two types of brow gels in the market. One is tinted brow gel and the other is clear brow gel.

Learn about tinted brow gel. Tinted brow gel is mainly used to fill in gaps of those with sparse eyebrows. This gel helps you cover the areas in your brows where hair is light or absent.

Learn about clear brow gel. Clear gel helps you keep your brow hair firm and sleek. You will find wet look, firm hold and other types of varieties in this form. If you have thick brows then this type of brow gel is best for you.

Keep your brow maintained. Your brows should be properly waxed or plucked before you try to stylise them. Remember, a brow gel will make your brows look sleek only when you keep them neat and in order.

Use an eye pencil to fill in your brows if needed. Before applying a brow gel, thoroughly look for areas where brow hair is absent or are less. Even if you are using a tinted brow gel, it is recommended to use brow pencil to fill in the gaps.

Brush the brows the way you want to before applying the gel. Brow gels come with brow brushes that allow you to brush your brows into any style you want to. This brush will help you set your brows once you apply the brow gel.

Do not apply a lot of brow gel. Remember, like mascara, you only need a little brow gel for your brows. Only take a little gel from the excess of the container initially. Even this is enough to keep your brows in style.

Do not brush the gel on your brows in a hurry. Take one brow at a time and work on it. Brush the gel on one brow at a time. Brush outwards to make sure the gel is smoothing out and is being distributed equally.

Between laminated brows , soap brows and embracing body hair, we’re all about capitalizing on the natural shape and thickness of the brows . That means we’re no longer looking to hide behind super pigmented brow products or heavily drawn on shapes — instead, we want to try brow products that set our look and enhance the hair our parents gave us. Thankfully, L’Oréal Paris just dropped a brow innovation to help us do exactly that — enter the Unbelivabrow Longwear Waterproof Universal Transparent Topcoat . Read on to learn more about why you’ll want to get your hands on this must-have for summer (and beyond).

What Is the Unbelivabrow Topcoat?

This one-of-a-kind waterproof topcoat is a clear liquid that can be used by itself or on top of a brow pencil to laminate and set your look. It’s long-wearing which means it can last up to 30 hours, it’s smudge-and transfer-resistant and quick-drying. It works to not only seal in companion products, but to keep your brow hairs in place. It has a precise spoolie applicator to ensure you don’t miss any hairs, too.

How to Use an Eyebrow Gel Topcoat

Using the Unbelivabrow Longwear Topcoat is so easy that you can incorporate it into your everyday routine. Ahead, find a step-by-step on how to apply it like a pro.

STEP 1: Define Your Brows

Start by defining your brows with a brow pencil of choice. We recommend the L’Oréal Paris Brow Stylist Definer Waterproof Mechanical Eye Pencil in the shade closest to your natural brow color. Comb through your hairs with the spoolie end to define your shape, then fill in any sparse areas with the pencil. Pro tip: use a light hand and small strokes to achieve a natural look.

STEP 2: Apply the Topcoat

After your brows are filled in, pick up the Unbelivabrow Longwear Topcoat and drag the clear product through your hairs, starting from the head of your brow to the tail. Use the precision spoolie to gently set each hair in place. Anything else they should know about how to use this product, what they can expect, etc?

STEP 3: Let It Set

After application, let the topcoat set for a few seconds then continue on to the rest of your makeup. The best part is that this formula won’t budge throughout the day into night — so no touch-ups are necessary!

How to apply brow gel

The great thing about eyebrow gel is that it doesn’t require the same precise shaping and carving techniques as other eyebrow filling products. But how to actually use eyebrow gel? Check out our easy step-by-step tutorial on applying eyebrow gel like a pro!

The best time to use an eyebrow gel is after you’ve applied your complexion makeup and either before or after your eye makeup. We actually recommend filling in the brows before putting on eye makeup since brows act as a frame for the face and will allow you to better gauge how much eye makeup you really need.

  • If you use other brow filling products, use those first. The order should be cream or pomade, then brow powder, and finally a brow gel to set everything.
  • To start applying the brow gel, uncap the wand from the lid, and then, to avoid a clumpy look, wipe off any excess product on the lip of the tube or on a tissue.
  • If you’re also using your brow gel to give your brows some shape, start with the tail and work your way forward over the arch and then to the front. Focus on getting product on the hairs first, and then, if necessary, press it gently into the skin to deposit some color below the hairs. You can use the tip of the wand like a brush to achieve micro strokes.
  • When applying the brow gel to the front third of the brow, be careful to use a light hand so that the front looks more diffused and natural. Otherwise, you can end up with blocky-looking eyebrows.
  • Use a clean Q-tip or spoolie brush to blend out any clumps or patchy spots.
  • Once you’re happy with the color, use your brow gel one last time only over the hairs to set the brows into place. Make sure your wand isn’t saturated with too much product.
  • For a simple and clean look, brush the hairs with their natural grain, which can differ from person to person. For most, this means the hairs at the front half of the brow should be brushed on a diagonal going upwards and outwards, and then from the arch to the tail, they should be brushed outwards and slightly downwards.
  • For a bushy “model brow” look, brush the hairs upwards so that they stick up vertically.

For all of glitter makeup’s scene-stealing potential, it comes with a few admittedly unwieldy drawbacks, including hard-to-remove flecks of sparkle that cling to cheeks, eyelashes, and clothes, and a potentially painstaking application. That’s why, with the holidays on the horizon and countless festive parties ahead, the most directional makeup staple of the moment has arrived just in time: Meet the season’s new shimmering golden brow gel.

Dior’s just-launched 24-karat sheer formula, which goes on with a few simple swipes of a brush-on solution, is packed with tiny reflective metallic particles that twinkle just so in the right light. Requiring neither a skilled hand nor valuable minutes of getting-ready time—five seconds is all that’s needed to get the job done—it’s essentially idiotproof.

The best part? Packed with hardworking fibers that lift hair up right from the root, the innovative brow “mascara” can be subtle enough to go barely noticed or layered on with creative liberty for a full-on, high-impact shine. Whether matched to a glistening pair of statement earrings or paired with fresh skin and a swipe of lip balm en route to a black-tie affair, the 30-second, Uber-friendly magic wand may just be the glittering answer to your makeup prayers.

How to apply brow gel

We all know by now that there are an abundance of eyebrow products on the market. From eyebrow pencils, to brow soaps, waxes and pomades. Today we are shining the spotlight on brow powders and gel, helping you make the best of the product and giving you the tips you need in order to use it correctly.

Firstly, It’s worth finding out whether a brow powder is the right eyebrow product for you.

If you have full brows with lots of hair when we’d say yes. Also, if you have slightly oily skin, a brow powder may work better for you than a pencil as the powder will absorb any excess oil on the brows. If on the other hand you have sparse brows or really dry skin, perhaps other products like a pencil or a pomade may suit you better. If you have sparse/thin/fine brows and you really want to use a powder as your base, we’d suggest you powder your brows into the shape you want using a stencil, then with a pencil (or a brow gel and brush), draw in fine hair strokes on top to achieve the look.(Our Brow Pro pencil is perfect at achieving realistic hair strokes due to the ultra fine tip)

When choosing a brow powder, we’d recommend going for one shade lighter than your natural hair colour as once applied, it can sometimes look a little heavy as your brow hairs create the texture but the powder gives the body so anything too dark can look too much. When used correctly, a brow powder should give a natural soft, diffused effect.

How to apply brow gel

When using a brow powder you will want to apply your face make up first. Go in with your foundation and base before doing your eyebrows. Always use a primer when using a brow powder as this will help the powder grip and stay put. (We’d recommend the Anastasia Brow Primer)

To apply the brow powder correctly you will need a good fine, straight-angled brush . The straight angle will allow you to get better precision and apply product exactly where you need it.

Less is more with a brow powder so instead of applying product directly from the pallet to your brows, we’d recommend tapping off the excess product on to the back of your hand and then use from there. It’s never a good idea to apply the powder directly from the pallet to the face as too much product will be applied and it can look messy.

  • When using a brow powder, I’d recommend using a good eyebrow pencil to gently etch the shape on softly to give you a template. Fill the area with the brow powder afterwards using your straight-angled brush. Diffuse the edges afterwards to soften the look.
  • Apply a small amount of Brow Fix on top of the powder once you have finished to set the brows. Once applied, your brows will be waterproof allowing you to exercise, swim and go out in the rain.

Eyebrow gels and pomades are in essence powders that have been mixed with a solution to make them that bit creamier than a standard powder.

Back when Instagram became the platform for make up bloggers, brow gels and pomades were the product that put insta-brows on the map! Brow gels were hugely popular due to their versatility and ability to create a multitude of looks and finishes. The fact that gels don’t need a primer and that they suit most skin types made them a firm favourite amongst eyebrow enthusiasts.

Various finishes and brow styles are achievable with a brow gel depending on how they are applied. Similar to a powder, brow gels are best applied using a brush, applied from the back of the hand, not straight from the pot. They are able to act like a ‘felt tip pen’ achieving a perfect defined shape when applied with a fine-angled brush (but this does take some practise.) In contrast they can also be used to achieve a soft, diffused look if applied using a stubbier, softer brush. Because of this versatility, brow gels have been the go-to product for those wanting to achieve an ombre’ brow, as the front of the brows can be soft with the product being blended out and then in contrast, sharp and defined at the tails using a firm, fine-angled brush. Our Brow colour boost can be used in a similar way by using a brush instead of the wand provided to draw hair strokes to create the look. Time is of the essence when working with a brow gel as the product does dry out quickly and once dried, is much harder to work. You can use this drying quality to your advantage though and use the gel to help stick down and control any unruly hairs. Most eyebrow gels are water and smudge proof so once applied, your brows will be set for the day come rain or shine.

Remember the early noughties when everyone's eyebrows were thinner than Rizla? Well, bold, bushy brows have brazenly taken their place and we are not mad about it.

Even if we're hearing that thin brows could be on their way back in, we want our brows to be fluffy, thick, and natural-looking, pls.

But one thing we've recently been obsessed with is brow lamination and we're not the only ones. A lot of celebs including Molly-Mae Hague, Laura Whitmore and Dua Lipa are huge fans of brow lamination and have shared their results on the ol' Gram.

But if you can't get to a salon or you frankly CBA with all the faff (we feel you) the next best thing is hard-working brow gel. It gives you the same brushed-up look without the semi-permanent results.

What's more, it only takes a few strokes to see Insta-worthy results.

How to apply brow gel

How to apply brow gel

There are a few different ways on how to use a brow gel and it really does depend on the results you're after.

Some prefer to use a brow gel as the initial step in their brow routine, so they can then simply follow with an eyebrow pencil to fill in any gaps. This is great for anyone who wants their brows to look seriously up-brushed.

Others prefer to pencil their brows and then use a brow gel as a final step to set them.

You can also use a brow gel on it's own, if you're looking for a more natural look or you're already blessed with thick brows.

To apply, simply comb through the gel your eyebrow hairs in the direction you want them to stay. Adding a wiggle motion to the stroke can ensure that your eyebrows are fully coated with the product.

Fluffy brows, incoming 🔥.

Fact: The beauty crowd is willing to experiment with just about anything to achieve full, feathery brows. From the Old Hollywood-inspired soap brow craze to Elmer’s Glue (it’s makeup artist Sir John’s secret weapon), the industry isn’t afraid to get creative. Now, many leading beauty brands are launching brow waxes, meaning that achieving those fluffy arches is easier than ever before. Even if you’re adept at using pencils or powder, it’s totally understandable if you’re a little unsure about how to use a brow wax. This is where the pros come in — TZR got the low-down from experts on the best approach to the buzzy product.

Sure, you might be thinking — how exactly is this different from a brow gel? Well, according to Gita Bass, a celebrity makeup artist who works with Tina Fey and Laura Dern, a wax gives you even more hold than a gel, and never gets stiff or flakey. “It even works well on coarse, stubborn hair, and since it doesn’t set like a gel, you can keep molding your brows to get the look you want,” Bass tells TZR. “The extra hold and play time you get allows you to create really gorgeous feathered, extra lifted brows that don’t move.” Additionally, Mai Quynh, a celebrity makeup artist whose clients include Chloë Moretz and Sandra Oh, explains, “the texture [of a wax] helps position unruly hairs as well as separate and help brow hairs stand up better.”

In addition to extra hold, Bass notes that a wax tends to be more conditioning than a gel, which contributes to overall brow strength. For instance, Iconic London’s Brow Silk is formulated with ingredients such as jojoba seed oil, shea butter, and candelilla wax (which is ideal for people with skin sensitivities) that both nourish and moisturize the brows. Then there’s Patrick Ta’s Major Brow Shaping Wax, which is infused with peptides to support new brow growth, as well as glycerin and olive oil that soften and condition hair.

To use the wax, you’ll also need a spoolie on hand. Once you’re ready to go, Bass recommends twirling the spoolie into the product, and then repeat this motion on the back of your hand or the cap of the wax to ensure you have thin, even layer of product that’s free of chunks. Pro tip: Less is more. You can always go back into the wax and add extra product to your brows if need be.

“Next, brush the spoolie through the brows using upward motions and gently press the hairs down as you go using either the spoolie or your finger,” Bass explains. Keep brushing and molding the brow until you achieve your desired shape. “If you want your brows to lay flatter, gently press them with your finger to hold them down,” says the makeup artist.

When you’re happy with how your brow shape looks, you can then pull out your other go-to products. “Next, fill in any sparse areas using a powder or a brow pen, rather than a waxy pencil which will just move the brows out of place and won’t adhere well to the wax.” Again, be sure to apply your brow wax before your color products as the wax might distort those areas of pigment and make your brow look blurry or unnatural. For those who prefer a brow pen, Quynh says you can go in and draw hair-like strokes into areas that need it. Et voila! You have yourself Cara Delevingne-esque brows in just a few minutes.

So, now that you’re a brow wax expert, you can start shopping for your ideal product. Below, find the best brow waxes on the market.

How to apply brow gel

Before everyone was trying to get eyebrows on fleek, my mom introduced me to the OG of brow products — clear gel. The invisible Maybelline Great Lash Clear Mascara ($6) had a slight brown tint by the time it passed along to me. My mom liked to add it as the finishing step over her dark brow powder and pencil to keep every hair in place. Now they make tinted tamers for brows (which just makes so much sense). Even though I’ve been using this makeup staple for over a decade, I recently learned my application method is all wrong.

Typically I add a gel as the last step in my arch routine. It defines every hair and tones down any other makeup, so my brows don’t look like painted-on rectangles. Usually, I sweep the spoolie over the hair from front to tail — wrong! Maybelline global brow expert Maribeth Madron recommends starting with the tail and brushing the hairs in toward the nose first. This coats the back of every follicle in product, giving your brows more volume and definition. Then, brush brows up from inner corner to the tip. Honestly, this simple hack works so well. I gave up using pencil and powder altogether. The colored gel is enough.

Give the most powerful feature on your face some love with eyebrow products designed to add instant polish and lasting definition. Discover eyebrow pencils, brow powders and gel pomades that do the work for you to create your brows but better!

When it comes to brow makeup, there are many types of products including brow pencils, brow gel and pomade. The best brow makeup product for you will depend on whether you’re starting with full brows, sparse brows or no brows at all. IT Cosmetics has a solution for every brow type!

To fill in sparse brows, our best-selling Brow Power Universal Eyebrow Pencil is an excellent option. Available in four universal shades to match every brow color, it features an exclusive oval tip that mimics the look of real hair. Plus, the budge-proof formula adheres to skin for long-lasting results!

When filling in your brows with a pencil, use gentle pressure to apply soft, feathery strokes for lighter-colored brows. Use firmer pressure for darker-colored brows. Once you’ve filled in both brows, use a spooley brush to evenly disperse the pigment and ensure a natural, polished look.

As IT Cosmetics founder Jamie Kern Lima explains, “Your brows are the most powerful feature on your face, and you can groom, fill and define them to create the look of symmetry, which equates to beauty in the human eye!” Knowing how to shape your brows will help make your eyes appear wider and more lifted, resulting in a more youthful look.

How to apply brow gel

Everyone has that one part of their beauty routine that they can’t leave home without doing, even if it’s just for a quick run to the grocery store. It could be putting on mascara or popping on lip. For me, it’s filling in my brows.

I usually stick with a simple pencil. It makes my brows fuller without looking too severe. Not everyone wants Instagram brows. Since I fill my brows every day, I’ve considered permanent cosmetics to save me a little time in the morning, but I actually like the ritual of filling them in myself. Plus, what if I get them applied permanently and I’m not happy with the finished result? At the end of the day, that’s still a face tattoo.

A few weeks ago, I heard about Wunderbrow, a one step brow gel brow that stays put for days on end. Brow gels are great because they build on the brows you already have, beefing them up, making them look like a better version of your natural brows. If this could last for days, it might just be a game changer.

How to apply brow gel

Wunderbrow comes with the tube of product and a spoolie. The applicator is not unlike a tube of lip gloss, but instead of a doe foot, there’s a small brush at the end. When you brush Wunderbrow on, it sort of sits on top of your brows, which is why the spoolie is essential to actually get it down in the strands. The product itself is very pigmented and creamy, so it brushes through nicely without clumping or building up on itself too quickly.

My brows are black, and I initially thought that the darkest Wunderbrow shade, Brown/Black, would be too warm to blend in with them, which is a problem I run into when trying to match my natural brow hairs with a dark brown shade. Turns out, once I had it combed through, it looked real and matched my natural brow color.

How to apply brow gel

Wunderbrow stayed exactly where I put it all day, looking as good at the end of the night as it did when I first applied that morning. But the real test was whether or not it would hold up during a shower.

I washed my face as I normally would, with a heavy duty cleanser and my Clarisonic. When I was done, my brows were still intact. I was careful not to hit the brows directly with the cleansing brush, because I think it’d be unrealistic to expect them to stand up to that, and I don’t think I’d want them to. When I towel dried my face, I was careful not to rub them, so precautions were taken, but I didn’t have to tip toe around my brows, like I do with eyelash extensions.

Wunderbrow works by using hair-like fibers that cling to your natural brow hairs in a flexible gel that stays where you put it all day–no fading, smudging, or crumbling. After it sets for two minutes, the brows still feel pliable to the touch, but without any smudging or transferring of the pigment on your fingertips. Even at the end of the night when I’m taking off my foundation with a makeup remover wipe, I can go over my brows with any trace of the product on the cloth.

How to apply brow gel

Wunderbrow washes off after a few days, so it’s not a long-term commitment. I like to touch it up every other morning, just to keep my brows even, but I can usually get at least three days from one application. No matter how much I enjoy the ritual of filling them in, Wunderbrow makes my brows one less thing I have to worry about every morning.

How to apply brow gel

To quote Meagan Good’s most recent Instagram post, “my eyebrow journey has been almost as interesting as my actual life journey.” Before getting mine microbladed two years ago, a tweezer or waxing strip had never touched them because they simply didn’t grow. And they still don’t, though the addition of semi-permanent ink has made daily maintenance a whole lot easier. There is however one small, but important exception and question: how am I supposed to apply brow pomade without looking as though I literally stamped brows onto my face?

Brow pomade isn’t necessarily needed every day, but when you want randomly want to hit Cara Delevingne-level definition, know how to use it is kind of necessary. So where do we start? Brow Queen and Founder of Anastasia Beverly Hills Anastasia Soare says to first identify a product that checks the following boxes: intense color payoff, waterproof, and long-lasting.

She adds that whatever you invest in should also come with a quality brush, especially for when you want to add individual hair strokes in areas of sparseness. For instance, ABH’s DIPBROW Pomade ($18) brush was specifically designed to handle precise application. Similarly, the new DIPBROW Gel ($18), a finishing touch that provides the coverage of a pomade, comes with an attached wand applicator that does the same thing. “Brush 12 is very precise thanks to its incredibly thin design and soft bristles,” she says. “The spoolie is also just the right softness and texture to blend the product to perfection.”

How to apply brow gel

Whether you want to combine pencil (like the cult fave Brow Wiz) with a pomade is completely according to your personal preference. Soare prefers using both on most days and setting with a clear brow gel. (Pro-tip: use a pencil to clean up the line and highlight the brow bone too.) Whatever the case, here’s how to apply just the right amount of pomade for brows that are ultra full, but still natural-looking.

How to apply brow gel

Once upon a time, eyebrows were simply an afterthought you hastily combed through after applying a full face of makeup. Now, beauty lovers are finally beginning to give these face framers the attention they deserve.

As eyebrows increasingly take center stage, a range of brow-perfecting products have exploded onto the scene, and figuring out which one to use is enough to make most scratch their heads. We’d love to step up our brow game, too, so we asked TODAY’s Bobbie Thomas and makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes to help us decipher three of the most popular eyebrow product formulas: liner, gel and powder. These two makeup mavens are breaking down the pros and cons of each brow formula and sharing a few application tips, too!

Give brows a nice base with liner

When you really want to make your eyes pop, eyeliner can help add a quick touch of definition. As it turns out, eyebrows stand to benefit from a little liner too, just not the same kind.

“My secret is an eyebrow liner. Like, a liquid liner that flicks on little brow hairs, basically,” Hughes said.

Eyebrow liner pretty much creates the same effect as regular eyeliner, but it has a denser pigment and comes in a different range of colors that are intended to blend in with your natural hair color.

Ready to get started with brow liner? Check out Hughes’ tips for making the most of this makeup bag must-have:

  • Store your liner upside down: Sounds funny, right? But doing so will actually make application easier. “I store it upside down, so that the flow of the ink is always coming to the tip,” Hughes said.
  • Frame your brows: Want a natural look? Hughes suggests framing your face by drawing out four lines across the bottom of your brows then filling in any blank space. Next, draw a few lines around the top of your brows to make them look a bit fluffy.
  • Match your natural hair color: If you color your hair, make sure to match your natural eyebrow color for the most seamless look possible.
  • Get up close and personal: For a precise application, use a compact mirror and hold it right up to your face. “The denser the brow hair, the more you have to kinda, like, get it in between the hairs,” Hughes said.

Refine with a brow gel

Eyebrow liner can lay the the groundwork for showstopping brows, but brow gel can really help you polish things up a bit and solidify that natural look.

Not sure how to use this beauty bag staple? Follow Hughes’ go-to tips:

  • Find the right texture: Hughes recommends opting for a gel with a “pomade-y, glossy, wet hold” to help make your brows really pop.
  • Cover up your makeup mishaps: Brow gels can help you match the natural stroke of your brows, and mask any splotchy spots you might have accidentally created with your liner.

Get lasting power with a powder

For the most part, product formula is pretty much a personal preference. And much like eye shadow, brow products come in a range of formulas with their own set of advantages.

Want to know why I love my eyebrow gel and why I will never go a day without it?

You're in the right place!

Use this article to find out why you should be using eyebrow gel, how it can enhance your face and look, the benefits of using it, and which ones I love:

Eyebrow Gel Magic

If I could only have two makeup products one would be eyebrow gel and the other would be mascara.

Because in terms of the amount of benefit you get from the effort put in, nothing beats it.

Also, the cost to benefit ratio is incredibly valuable considering how cheap eyebrow gel is.

By applying gel to your brows first thing in the morning you can have beautiful looking brows all day long.

I promise it will help you look and feel amazing.

As someone who spends a lot of time making eyebrows look beautiful with microblading, I feel like I'm entitled to talk about the pros and cons of this magical tool.

No one wants to get nappy brows, so if you aren't already using eyebrow gel then it's time to up your game.

I actually asked my husband what he thought about eyebrow gel and he was totally confused.

Once I dragged my eyebrows downward and told him to look he totally got it.

So, with this in mind, let's talk about the benefits of using eyebrow gel and why I think it's a must-have in your makeup arsenal.

#1. It Automatically Thickens your Brows

Well, it doesn't actually thicken them but it gives them the appearance of being bigger and thicker.

Adding gel can give you the "look" that your brows are thicker then they really are which is great if that is the look that you are going for.

This probably happens as the gel causes your brows to stick together giving them the appearance that they are thick.

This benefit will obviously fade as you take off the gel at night!

#2. It Cuts Down on 'Get-Ready' Time in the Morning

Want to get out of your house but still want to look good? (Don't we all. )

Well, eyebrow gel may be the answer.

There are plenty of mornings when all I can do is slap on some gel and put on some mascara.

But even just doing these two things can make it look like you've spent a lot longer getting ready than you really did.

#3. It can Add Tint to your Current Brow Color

Another benefit of using eyebrow gel is that they can come in tinted colors.

This can help add dimension and color to your existing brow color.

Say for instance that you are blonde.

Maybe you want to darken up your brows to help draw attention to them.

You can do that by purchasing tinted eyebrow gel which will give your brows a darker color.

It's more difficult to "lighten" up your brows though because darker colors tend to push through other colors.

But, having said that, you can still augment your existing look and give them a tamed look if that is your goal as well.

Moral of the story?

There are eyebrow gels for all types of brows, including light and dark colored brows.

#4. It May Make your Brows Grow (Debatable)

I'm including this benefit because it is something that many eyebrow gels claimed, but I still remain skeptical.

Because there are so many reasons why your brows might be sparse or not growing well and plenty of these reasons have nothing to do with what you are putting directly on your brows.

Just putting on some gel won't solve your thyroid problems or your stress.

Does that mean they won't help your brows grow?

Not necessarily, but it's not something that I would bet a lot of money on or go out of your way to purchase.

If your favorite eyebrow gel happens to make that claim then great! Continue using them.

But don't spend a ton of extra money on a gel which claims to help your brows grow.

#5. Keeps Bushy Brows Tame All Day Long

Ok, so another big reason to use gel is that it can help keep your brows tame all day long.

I mean keep them in their proper place!

If you accidentally put your hand on your face, rub your eyebrows the wrong way, or mess with them in any way, you know that they can get "Jabberwocky".

The right gel can keep your brows exactly where you want them to be and where you put them in the morning!

My Favorite Eyebrow Gels

The good news is that most eyebrow gels are very affordable and range somewhere between $10 and $30.

The tube will last on average a few months (depending on how much you use) so you won't have to pay very much if you average the cost each month.

Like other beauty products, you really get what you pay for though, with some of the more expensive products being the best.

Luxury Eyebrow Gel

One of my favorites is the gel by jane iredale called PureBrow gel.

It comes in 4 color options: auburn, blonde, brunette, and clear.

I love products by jane iredale because they are organic and contain very few inactive ingredients or toxins. This makes them light and easy to use on the skin!

This is probably the best option if you want the best product, the safest product, and the most high-quality option.

You might not like this option if you are very active and tend to sweat as you may sweat off the product over time.

But if you enjoy light exercise every now and then, then this product should work great!

How to apply brow gel

Budget Eyebrow Gel

Another good option is the clear great lash eyebrow gel listed below.

It's not my favorite because it only comes in clear and it doesn't have all organic materials, but it's certainly an option if you are on a tight budget.

One downside to this product is that it doesn't last all day long (like the jane iredale gel) and may only keep your brows in place for a few hours.

Another benefit is that it is more waterproof (probably because of the added chemicals) so it may be a better option if you tend to sweat regularly.

How to apply brow gel

Tinted Eyebrow Gel

This may be a great option if you are suffering from sparse hairs related to thyroid dysfunction or hair loss from any other cause.

The tinting in this gel will allow you to fill in your brows which will make them look bushier and more full.

This is probably the best product if you need or want to exaggerate the look and feel of your brows.

Just be careful! The darker color may not look great on all skin types, especially for those of you with light skin.

How to apply brow gel

Conclusion

Eyebrow gel is probably my most favorite makeup item that I use on a daily basis.

I love it because it can really add to your face with minimal time and minimal cost.

You can use eyebrow gel to help enhance your existing eyebrows, make the look bushier, help keep them tame all day long, and even tint or darken your existing color.

It may take you some time to figure out what works best for you and your skin type, but it shouldn't be hard to figure out over a few weeks.

Angle pen so slanted edge of tip is horizontal to your brow. Make sure all 4 tips are touching your brow. Start at the bottom of your brow and stroke upwards.

After 20 strokes, shake pen and let sit upside down for a period of time so the wick can soak up more makeup ink. Make sure to put the cap back on the pen so the ink does not dry out.

Advanced Brow Enhancement Serum

We recommend applying Advanced Brow Enhancement Serum twice daily for the first two months. After the first 2 months you can switch to once daily, in the morning or evening. Repeat daily, decreasing to once daily after two months.

After desired improvement is achieved, apply every other day for maintenance. The Advanced Brow Enhancement Serum requires continued use to maintain benefits.

While lipstick, mascara, or BB cream may have been the answer to this question at one time, somehow things have shifted so that we hardly feel dressed without knowing that our brows are living up to their full potential. Brows can make your features pop in a way nothing else will, so learning how to do your brow makeup perfectly is key.

What Makeup Do You Need for Your Brows?

The answer to that question is, of course, as much or as little as you want! If your brows do it for you rolling out of bed, go on with your bad self. But if you want to kick it up a couple of notches, we do recommend a couple of things.

  1. TatBrow’s Ultra Defining Brow Gel if you want to darken, warm, or otherwise impact the natural color of your brows. It thickens and conditions, all the while leaving your eyebrow hairs soft and flexible.
  2. TatBrow’s Micro Precision Pen gives you hair-like strokes in six natural shades for filling in your brows with unparalleled exactness.
  3. TatBrow’s Ultra Hold Brow Gel for a clear, incredible hold that dries almost instantly with no residue. This will hold your hard work into place and keep your brows in line, day and night.

How Do You Know Where To Draw or Fill in Your Brows?

There are many answers to this question! It partly depends on the look you’re going for. Whether it’s full and fluffy brows or perfectly manicured arched eyebrows , the basics of figuring out how to pluck or tweeze your eyebrows are roughly the same. There are many guides that will walk you through how to find your best shape.

Once you’ve decided on a shape, if your brows are particularly sparse, we recommend starting with a TatBrow Microblade Pen to draw more fine hairs at once. If your brows are thicker, or if you just want a bit more control, the Micro Precision Pen is going to be the best tool in your arsenal.

After using Ultra Defining Brow Gel (or a bare spoolie if you prefer), brush all of the hairs in the ideal direction. Then, go in with the TatBrow Micro Precision Pen and fill in your brow with delicate hair strokes that go in the same direction as your newly-coiffed brows. Basically, it’s simple—take a hint from what nature gave you!

I’ve been trying to tape this brow video for years. Yes, years. Every time I’ve filmed it before, the sound or picture quality hasn’t been the best. I’m happy to say that I FINALLY filmed a decent video to show guys you how I fill in my brows. Please note, my brows aren’t the easiest to work with so they’re still not exactly how I’d like them. But don’t worry the tips I have for you will still help you achieve YOUR perfect brows!

Products I Used:

  • Too Faced Brow Pencil – “Browny”
  • MAC Paintpot – “Quite Natural”
  • Anastasia Brow Gel – “Medium Taupe”
  • Makeup Geek Dual Ended Brow Brush

DO’S

Thicker is better – Fuller brows portray youth, so keeping them thicker makes you look younger. For this reason, keep your brow game strong by not over plucking your brow hairs. We’ve all been guilty of this, but we promise to stop over plucking if you promise you will too.

Shape accordingly – Ideally you want the inner part of your brow to be thicker, then taper to a thinner line as it goes toward your temple. The arch should be just outside your pupil.

Lighten Up ( For super dark brows.) – If you have fair skin and very dark brows, you may need to lighten them up. I bleach mine slightly with facial bleach to make them appear less harsh. Be sure to only leave the bleach on for 5 minutes or less. Leaving the bleach on for any longer will leave you with orange brows! Oh no!

Pick powder to look the most natural – For the most natural brows, use a matte finish tan or brown eyeshadow to fill in your brows. Take an angled brow brush and apply shadow to sparse areas.

Carve out your brows – For very defined brows, take a small flat brush and apply creamy concealer under the brows to tidy up the edges. You probably don’t need this step for everyday, but it’s perfect for getting defined brows when you’re wearing a more dramatic look.

DONT’S

Never fill in your brows with black pencil – Unless you want “black sharpie brows”, just please don’t do this. Even if you have black brows, use a dark brown product.

Stay away from red tints – Hair naturally has a khaki undertone to it, so using brow products that also have a touch of khaki will look more natural. For whatever reason, most makeup companies have reddish tinted brow products. Stay away from these products.

Don’t over draw. – The entire brow shouldn’t have the same darkness all throughout. Generally, the arch and the tail of the brow should be the most defined and the darkest. The inner part should be slightly more sparse and lighter.

Don’t forget to tame the strays- It’s best to set your brows with a brow gel to really lock the hairs in place all day.

Our 40s and 50s tend to make our brows much more sparse and, if we’re being honest, pretty non-existent — which is why we compiled this guide on how to fill in eyebrows over 50. If you’ve avoided eyebrow makeup for some time, you’re not alone. Figuring out how to get the shape just right without making your brows look drawn on, too dark, too thick, or uneven is complicated. But with the right products and the right technique, you’ll be rocking bold, natural-looking brows in no time.

What is my eyebrow shape?

Your eyebrow shape is important because no two brows are the same, including the two on your face! Some women have high arches, while others have a slight curve. Some women have full, thick brows, while others have barely-there hair. No matter the shape, color, or fullness, every brow is beautiful, and finding the right way to accentuate your beautiful eyes can make a world of a difference. The chart below is a helpful reference in figuring out where you land.

How to apply brow gel

High arches: Meryl Streep is a lovely example of someone with high arches. If your shape is similar, gently pluck under the highest part of your brows to maintain their shape. If they’re on the thinner side, use caution when tweezing other hairs as it can be easy to overpluck. We recommend only removing stray hairs and trimming the rest if needed. Use a brow powder and a pencil to add more definition and fill in any areas that are too thin or sparse.

Full: Viola Davis’ thicker brows are gorgeous, and there are a few tips for keeping them groomed. Drawing the shape you want with a brow pencil or gel will help give you a guide of what hairs you want to tweeze and what hairs you want to keep. Before plucking, brush the first half of your brow’s hair follicles upwards and slightly trim any hairs that are too long. Brush the second half of your brows in a diagonal, upward direction so you don’t accidentally trim them too short.

Straight: Your arches might be laying low, but that doesn’t make them any less fabulous — just take a peek at Madonna’s sharp, stunning brows! To get a slight arch, find the highest point of your eyebrows and pluck ever so lightly to give each brow some definition. The rest of your focus should be on cleaning up stray hairs at the tail end of your brow and at the very front. Trim any extra long hairs, and use a gel or pencil to really emphasize your striking shape.

Natural: Tweezers may be the last thing you reach for when it comes to makeup and skin care. Cindy Crawford has a beautiful pair of brows that aren’t precisely defined, but look effortless nonetheless. For minimal upkeep, just pluck any strays that have gone too far outside of the shape you prefer. A clear brow gel is a great way to hold them in place without changing their natural color, size, or shape.

How to Fill in Eyebrows Over 50

It may seem complicated at first, but once you understand how to fill your eyebrows, they will look flawless every day. Although every brow shape is different, there are a few general rules of thumb to keep in mind when you’re filling. Follow these steps for a natural set of brows, and use the diagrams below for a visual reference.

How to apply brow gel

Step One: It’s best to shower or use a warm wash cloth to open your pores before you begin shaping. This prevents ingrown hairs and makes tweezing less painful. Once you have a fresh face, gently brush the first quarter to half of your eyebrow hairs up and lightly trim any longer hairs. Sweep the last half of your brows upward in a diagonal fashion and lightly trim. Brushing this way prevents you from cutting off too much hair because the back half of your brow is thinner. Begin tweezing any stray, unruly hairs that you don’t want.

Step Two: Take a spoolie brush, like Benefit Cosmetics’ Angled Brow Brush & Spoolie ($20, Sephora), and sweep your brows up and to the side to get rid of any hair clippings. If you fancy a natural look, take a clear or colored gel and lightly comb through your hairs. It’s easier to accidentally darken or thicken too much with colored gel, so a clear gel is best to use for a natural look. If you get a glob of pigment in your follicles or you filled in your eyebrows too much, simply just grab your spoolie and brush out the hairs until you’re satisfied with the color and shape.

For those who want to define, accentuate, and perfect their brows, start by picking an eyebrow product that you prefer to work with. Waxes and gels are great for keeping hairs in place and creating clean lines. Powders cover quite a bit of surface area and give natural, even coverage for filling in sparse patches. Pencils and pens offer a great amount of control and work wonders for creating lines that look like natural hair. Mousses are a great mix between a gel and a pomade, and are great for adding color and volume. You can choose one or a mix of products to get the effect you want.

Step Three: Start at the front end of your brows. Take an eyeliner stick, an eyebrow pencil, or a makeup brush to use as a measuring stick and align it straight up and down with the outside of your nostril. Whether or not you have hairs there, this is where your brow should start. Draw a line starting there that follows the natural curve of your brow all the way to the tail end. Then, take your brow product of choice and lightly fill it in the front with short, vertical strokes. Repeat the same on the other side. It’s better to err on the side of caution and only do light shading to start. You can always build on top of it, but it’s much harder to remove product once it’s already there.

Step Four: Once you’ve filled in the first part of your brow, take the same pencil or brush you used to line up your brow and nostril, and diagonally align the top of your nostril with the highest part of your arch. If you haven’t already, pluck underneath the arch slightly to articulate its shape. Then make a few light strokes going in the direction that your hair grows to gently fill in this area.

Step Five: A brow pencil, or angled brush with pomade or wax, works best for the final part. Take your makeshift measuring stick and align the outside of your nostril with the outer corner of your eye. This is where your brow should end. Starting just underneath your arch, draw a very light line that traces the shape of your brow. This will serve as a guide for filling the back end. Use smaller strokes, start from the middle and work your way to the end. Again, it’s a good idea to start with faintly filling in and going back through, than having to start from scratch.

As an optional tip, sweep a transluscent setting powder over your brows to set them and remove any leftover product. Once you’re finished with your flawless brows, you’re all set to take on anything the day throws at you!

Bold, thick brows have been taking center stage in recent years. For those of us envious of bushy arches — or perhaps are still dealing with the consequences of the over-tweezing of yesteryear — there’s still hope for realizing one’s dream of luscious arches. Thanks to the magic of eyebrow makeup, anyone can learn how to get thicker eyebrows. All it takes is the right products, tools and techniques. To help with that, we speed-dialed celebrity brow artist Joey Healy and Hollywood makeup artist Min Min Ma for their styling and shading tips and tricks for fuller brows.

How to apply brow gel

Find the right eyebrow shade

Getting thicker eyebrows starts with choosing the right brow color. For people with darker hair and eyebrows, Ma recommends filling in brows with a color a shade or two lighter than your hair color, so eyebrows don’t appear too intense or overpowering. If you have a fair complexion with light hair and eyebrows, she suggests going one or two shades darker than your brow color to help eyebrows stand out. One foolrproof way to determine the right shade is with Rose Inc’s Virtual Try-On.

Healy warns against going too heavy handed or making eyebrows look too dark. “We’re very self-critical when we think our brows are uneven or ends are too short,” he says. “People tend to not notice those minor flaws besides us. What people do notice is a brow that is really filled in heavily with product because it tends to look inauthentic.”

Ma gravitates towards a clear brow gel since it works well for everyone, no matter their brow shade.

Layer Brow Products

Using a combination of brow products is a pro secret to lush, thicker-looking brows. Both Ma and Healy like to layer brow powder with brow gel. Healy says that brow powder adds density and fills in holes and gaps, while brow gel defines the hair and holds it in place, notes Ma.

The order in which you apply brow powder and brow gel varies. For sparse brows, Ma likes to go in with powder first to create structure and definition, then add a coat of brow gel on top. For brows that are naturally bushy, she uses brow gel first and fills in any sparse areas with brow powder second.

Using tinted brow gel versus clear brow gel comes down to personal preference. Ma gravitates towards a clear brow gel since it works well for everyone, no matter their brow shade. On the other hand, Healy likes a tinted brow gel, which not only styles brow hairs but also helps make each individual hair stand out and appear thicker. “The [brow] powder goes on the skin behind the brow, while the tinted gel coats the individual hairs, giving a layered effect,” Healy says.

Comb, shape and lock brows into place with an eyebrow gel. Opt for a clear brow gel or a tinted brow gel, so your eyebrows last as long as you stay up!
