How to apply blush on oval faces

Blush is one of the most underrated makeup products out there! One of the best ways to add life to your look is the addition of a rosey blush shade to the apples of your cheeks. The problem is, when people don’t know how to properly apply blush, they can end up looking more like a doll rather than mastering a subtle, glowing flush. Not to worry! We’re showing you how to apply blush for different face shapes in this post. From where to apply blush to how to wear blush for different skin undertones, check out our best blush tips for every face shape!

How to Properly Apply Blush: 4 Tips to Get Started

If you want blush to work for you, it’s important to know the key steps of blush application. Here are some tips to get you started!

1. Prime Your Face
Blush looks best over an already perfectly primed face. Apply your foundation, powder and/or tinted moisturizer to set a flawless foundation for your blush.

2. Choose Your Blush Colour Based On Your Skin Undertones
Not all blush shades will work for everyone. Choose your perfect blush colour based on your skin undertones. For gold or yellow undertones, opt for pink orange or reddish pinks to enhance brightness. For pink or red undertones, stick with light pinks to compliment your colouring, or peach to cut out redness. For plum or blue undertones, choose vivid oranges or pinks to pop against your skin!

3. Use Dense Makeup Brushes
For a perfect and natural blush look, make sure to use a dense makeup brush to help concentrate the colour where you want it to stay. A small dome-shaped brush will work best if you’re applying blush to the apples of your cheeks, while an angled brush will help you achieve the chiseled cheekbone look if that’s the look you’re going for.

4. Base Your Blush Choice on Your Skin Type
If you have dry skin or fine lines and wrinkles, it’s best to use a cream or liquid blush. If you have oily skin, stick to powder blush. Powder blush is also better for warmer months, while cream blush is best for cold weather!

How to Apply Blush to a Round Face

If you have a round face, you may want to slim it out and make it look more angular. You can do this with blush! For a round face, apply blush in an angular motion, blending from the apples of your cheeks toward your temples. Make sure not to blend towards your nose, as this will make your face look rounder. The goal is to emphasize your bone structure as much as possible.

How to Apply Blush to a Square Face

Square faces often have straight sides and a stronger, flat jawline. To soften the angles of your face you can incorporate square face makeup, including blush! Sweep your go-to blush shade across your cheekbones onto the higher side, moving upward with long, very light motions. You want to hit all of the cheekbone, from the edge of the brow to the hairline to perfect the look!

How to Apply Blush to an Oval Face

If you have an oval-shaped face, you’re in the perfect position to frame your gorgeous eyes with the accompaniment of blush. Since oval faces have prominent cheeks and an oval chin, start applying blush at the most prominent part of your cheekbone. Stroke it down towards the earlobe and blend up towards the temple. You can also add a tiny bit of blush above the temple for an extra radiant glow.

How to Apply Blush to a Diamond-Shaped Face

A diamond-shaped face is wide at the cheekbone and more narrow at the jawline, with an arrow-like chin. With a diamond-shaped face you want to draw attention to the bottom half of your face, but never apply blush in the hollows underneath your cheekbones. Apply it to the top of your cheekbones, blending towards your ears. This will draw the eye down and highlight your cheekbones at the same time!

How to Apply Blush to a Heart-Shaped Face

Heart-shaped face makeup can be tricky, but it doesn’t have to be! If you have a heart-shaped face, you have a longer face with prominent cheekbones and a narrow chin. For a heart-shaped face, apply blush along the bottoms of your cheekbones, in a “C” shape going from the top of your temple downwards. You’re pretty much mimicking the way you would contour. This will help balance your strong jawline by bringing more attention to your cheekbones.

There are several ways to apply blush depending on the shape of your face.

How to apply blush on oval faces

Blush seems fairly straightforward: You swirl your brush into your rouge then dust it on your face, right? This may be the most basic of applications, but in reality, blush can be incredibly flattering to your bone structure if you use it more strategically.

We asked Laramie, makeup artist and founder of Book Your Look, to tell us exactly how each face shape should apply and blend blush. Once you know your perfect blush color and technique combo, you’ll never go back to that typical round pop of rouge again.

How to apply blush on oval faces

If your face is long with prominent cheekbones and a narrow chin, you likely have a heart-shaped face. Saturate your blush brush with product, knock off the excess, then apply it in an almost “C” shape from the top of the temple down to the cheekbone. Use more product along the cheekbone, then diffuse it up towards the temple, pushing it in and upwards.

Note: Don’t go overboard with your application. “You want a blended look since it’s on more than just the cheeks,” Laramie warns.

How to apply blush on oval faces

The result: a warm, beautiful glow that shows off your high cheekbones and brings out your eyes.

How to apply blush on oval faces

Check out your forehead, cheeks, and jawline — are they all about the same width? You have an oblong face shape, which is like a soft rectangle. Hit the apple of the cheek starting at its most prominent part, blending towards the nose, then bringing it out towards the temple.

“You want to make sure you bring the blush down, too, because you don’t want to highlight the cheekbone area — the face naturally highlights it,” recommends Laramie. Add a touch of blush on the forehead and the sides of the brows to bring the look together.

How to apply blush on oval faces

The result: a naturally ethereal look that flatters the whole face.

How to apply blush on oval faces

Square faces tend to have straight sides and a fairly flat jawline (think Olivia Wilde or Angelina Jolie), so this technique softens the face’s angles with blush. “With a square face, you want to hit all of the cheekbone from the corner of the brow to the hairline,” notes Laramie.

Load up a loose synthetic brush with cream blush, diffusing color into the brush. With long, very light motions, sweep the blush across the cheekbone onto the higher side, starting low and moving upwards. Pull blush from the eyebrow down to the nose, but very softly and blended. Feeling adventurous? You can even apply a touch of blush to your lips and eyelids.

The tricks to follow to harmonize the shape of your face in a few steps. The blush, also called blush, allows you to look warmer, helping at the same time to make your body more balanced. Let’s see how to best apply it for a perfect and smudge-free result depending on the condition of your face. How to balance the face shape with blush.

Oval Face

An oval face is characterized by a longer shape than it is wide, with a greater width at the cheeks. On the other hand, the eyes have a distance at the hairline equal to that which separates the tip of the nose and the chin. For an optimal result, in this case, apply the blush on the cheeks, then blend it towards the temples with gentle outward and upward movements. If you want a more natural look, we recommend using a relatively large brush, while for a more decisive effect, a smaller meeting is better.

Square Face

A narrow and elongated shape characterizes a square face. To soften it, it is recommended to use the blush by applying it with circular movements while smiling to more easily identify the most protruding part of the cheek, an area on which it will be necessary to focus more.

Oblong Face

An oblong face tends to develop more in height than in length and is characterized by flat cheekbones, with an overall lean appearance. For this reason, when applying the blush, you will have to try to fill it and shorten it visually, introducing horizontality in the lines. A horizontal line must always be followed in its application, starting from the center of the cheeks and blending it towards the ears. In the case of a broad forehead, it is advisable to apply a more significant amount of blush on the cheeks, intensifying it with circular movements.

Round Face

A round face has full cheeks and rounded cheekbones, with the contour line forming an almost perfect circle. Therefore, it is advisable to lengthen the shape by applying the blush with movements from top to bottom, starting from the lobes and arriving just under the most protruding part of the cheeks. To better harmonize the features, it is necessary to follow an oblique trend in the drafting of the product and apply a small amount of blush also on the chin.

How to apply blush on oval faces

Do you know how to apply blush? It really seems something very simple and it is not that we have to complicate ourselves a lot, but sometimes if we do not follow the appropriate steps, the result may not be either. So, it is time to know how we should do according to the type of face we have.

Since what we want is always highlight our best points and parts, so for this we need the best advice. Maybe you thought that the blush did not have much science when it came to being applied, but as you will see it also has its little tricks. So, let yourself be carried away by all of them and you will see those great results that you expected.

Table of Contents

How to apply blush on a square face

We start with the square face, which is the one with a fairly marked and angular jaw. In the same way, your cheekbones will be quite prominent and this means that we have to follow a series of steps to be able to apply the blush. Since we want it, it is to give a sweeter finish to a face that is called as hardened. So, we are going to look for the cheekbone and we will highlight the upper part of it. It will be there where we apply the blush but always towards the outermost part. Make a few circular movements in the area to blend well and you will notice how that more youthful touch is presented in a matter of seconds.

How to apply blush on oval faces

It is also another of the fairly common faces and in this case, it must be said that they have the part of the cheekbones wider than the chin area and even the forehead. So, this makes it clear that it is already going to enhance the cheekbones, so this peculiarity makes us wonder how to put the blush. The truth is that it is also a simple step and that is, We will enlarge the area and we will put it all over the cheek, instead of only on the part of the cheekbone. But yes, well blurred and with light colors like peach that is always one of the great favorites. Try to make the color go from the center to the nearby areas.

Apply blush on round faces

When we talk about round faces, we mention those that have a very similar distance both in height and width, so the angular parts are discarded but yes, the cheekbones are usually a bit wide. So how to apply the blush to help us highlight our beauty, very easy. In this case it is best apply it just below the bone of your cheekbone and avoid the part of the cheeks. It is better that you do it in an ascending way as if the color is going to reach the temples. Because it is a way to lengthen this area.

How to apply blush on oval faces

For very long faces

This type of face makes the chin have a more elongated and narrow figure, which becomes more prominent. But it is true that in narrowness the cheekbones also stand out. Because, It is convenient to make a kind of horizontal line that goes from the area of the nose to almost reaching the ears. Because it is a way to break with that image of length that this face has and shorten it, even if it is only at the level of optical effect.

Triangular face

It is usually a thin face in which the forehead is narrow but the jaw is wide. So, in order to balance all these areas a little we are going to apply the blush in the right way. In this case we will make a kind of line in the upper part of the cheekbone. Something that also happened with the square type face. You must always follow the natural line of said cheekbone. Now you no longer have excuses to highlight your face!

Blushers can enhance your natural complexion. However, it is important to know your face shape to apply it to the right spots. This way, not only will you look stunning, but also it will make you get the most out of your beauty products.

5-Minute Crafts has prepared this guide to help you identify your face shape and apply blush according to your natural features.

1. Heart-shaped face

A heart-shaped face has a slightly pointed chin, a wide forehead, and prominent cheeks. Therefore, the aim is to soften the edges to make your face look more like an oval.

How to do it:

  1. Apply blush to the outer side of your cheekbones. Start by your ears and finish below the outer corner of your eyes.
  2. Blend some color by your temples, going to the center of your forehead. This will help you balance the width of the upper and lower area of your face.

2. Square face

They have a forehead with almost the same dimensions as the cheekbones and chin, along with a prominent jaw. So, the main goal for this face shape is to soften its edges and lengthen your forehead.

How to do it:

1. Apply blush forming half-moon shapes. Start by the apples of your cheeks, tracing your cheekbones all the way up to your temples.

2. Blend the color by drawing a loose 8 with the brush. This will help you get a more natural look.

Note: To identify the apples of your cheeks, smile, and use the pupils of your eyes as a guide. These will be your stopping points to help you avoid applying the blush too close to your nose.

How to apply blush on oval faces

When you apply blush in the right shape to flatter your face, it has an amazing ability to play up your best features. And it doesn’t take long to master at all.

First things first, spend a few minutes of quality time with your mirror to determine your face shape. This step will feel familiar if you’re a fan of contouring , but you certainly don’t have to be an expert to figure it out! Our favorite way to find your face shape involves a mirror and a dry-erase marker or an old lipstick. Pull your hair back and take a look in the mirror. Using the marker or lipstick, trace the outline of your face right on the mirror, following the contours of your chin, cheek and hairline. Step out of the way and look at the shape you traced. Compare it to the descriptions below – whichever it most closely matches is your face shape!

How to apply blush on oval faces

  • Heart Shaped: Your forehead is the widest part of your face, your cheekbones are prominent and your chin is pointed. Picture Reese Witherspoon.
  • Round: The measurements around your face are equal and have gently rounded corners. Mindy Kaling is a round-faced beauty!
  • Oval: Your forehead is larger than your jawline, your face length is longer than the width of your cheekbones and the angle of your jaw is slightly rounded. Tyra Banks is a good example.
  • Square: The width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw are all nearly the same, with straight sides and a fairly flat jawline. Olivia Wilde shows off her angular features!
  • Diamond: You have a pointed chin and high cheekbones, with a narrower hairline. Picture Selma Blair’s sharp-yet-subtle bone structure.

If you’re having a hard time narrowing it down, don’t worry. The most common face shape is oval, so if you’re not sporting any particularly prominent features, our tips for oval faces are a good place to start.

Choose the Right Tools to Apply Blush

If your idea of a blush brush is the tiny little plastic one that comes with drugstore brands, you’re not alone. If that’s all you’ve used, you’ll be amazed at the results you get from a pro-quality brush! To pair with our Perfect Blush , the Angled Blush Brush #03 is a must-have. You’ll be able to get all of the below looks with just that tool, but it’s also a good idea to have the Small Tapered Powder Brush #19 on hand for even more precise placement.

We like to apply blush as the final step of our makeup, because it allows us to add the perfect amount of color to complement whatever eye look we’ve chosen. When your face and eyes are good to go, gather your blush and brushes and read on!

How to Apply Blush to a Heart-Shaped Face

Heart-shaped faces have naturally prominent (and naturally gorgeous!) high cheekbones. Our first goal is to accentuate them with blush. Picture a ‘C’ shape from the top of your cheekbones up to the top of your temple and follow this shape with your blush. Concentrate a bit more color on your cheeks and then pull it upwards, diffusing it toward your hairline. You can also add a bit of color to the center of your forehead to help balance its width with your narrow chin.

How to Apply Blush to a Round Face

Because round faces tend to have such soft features, our goal is to make the cheekbones pop. Instead of applying blush directly onto the apples of the cheeks, aim a little lower down for a lifted effect. Blend the color out toward your hairline and not in toward your nose, which can actually make your face look rounder. Choose a matte blush for a polished, professional look, as shimmer-packed formulas have a tendency to look a little cherubic on round cheeks! Go for the velvety matte shades of Perfect Blush : numbers 01 , 02 , 07 , 08 , 10 and 11 .

How to Apply Blush to an Oval Face

Oval faces are fairly proportionate, usually with somewhat prominent cheeks and a narrower chin and forehead. This makes blush application especially forgiving! Find the most prominent part of your cheekbone and start there. Using soft strokes, blend it up toward the temple. Add just a touch above the temple, too. The only place to really avoid when adding blush to oval-shaped faces is below the cheekbone – leave that area for a darker contour or you could end up looking wind-burned rather than rosy.

How to Apply Blush to a Square Face

Square faces tend to have cheekbones that are the same width as your chin, blush is a great way to help those cheekbones stand out! Define them by applying blush to the apples of your cheeks and then pulling the color softly upwards and outwards, toward the lower side of your cheekbones. Avoid sweeping the color too much horizontally, because this can create the illusion of a wider face. We also love adding a hint of blush along the hairline just above the temples, which softens more angular features.

How to Apply Blush to a Diamond Face

Diamond-shaped faces are similar to oval faces, but typically have a more pointed chin, narrow hairline and defined cheekbones. You can follow similar guidelines, using blush to accentuate your well-proportioned face shape. Like oval faces, diamond shapes should avoid putting blush below the cheekbone. Instead, circle blush onto the tops of your cheekbones and pull it out to your hairline. This will draw attention to your beautifully defined features, so get ready to turn heads!

Finding the ideal blush application tips that match up your face shape can be difficult! I didn’t wear blush for the longest time because I had absolutely no idea how to put it on my face! Well girls, I’ve compiled all of the top blush application tips that will match your face shape perfectly! So girls, you ready to figure out exactly what blush application tips you need for your face shape? I am!

1 Round Face

So, this is what my face shape is. It’s completely round and when I was looking up blush application tips for every face shape, I found that the round face actually needs to be slenderized. What you do is actually apply your blush in a sideways V along your cheekbones and blend upward. This will give you the illusion that your cheeks are much thinner than they might be!

2 Oval Face

Oh you oval-faced girls out there, you have one of the best faces because it is all even proportionally. For this blush application tip, you actually want to use your fingertips and locate the most prominent part of your cheek. Once that is done, blend upwards, toward your temples to really highlight your cheeks.

3 Square Face

For a square shaped face, one of the objectives for you is to make your face softer. This blush application tip is pretty easy to do – all you need to is apply your blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend upwards. This will create a sweeping motion. You also want to dab a little bit of blush on your forehead as well as your chin. This will soften up the square angle of your jawline!

4 Diamond Face

Now, the diamond shape is similar to the triangle face shape, the forehead might just be a little bit more pronounced. This blush application tip is all about drawing attention away from your forehead and really focusing in on the rest of your face. Apply the blush along your upper cheekbones, blending very well! Once you get up to your temple, draw the blush in along your forehead to pull some attention away from it!

5 Heart-Shaped Face

I think that heart-shaped faces are so, so pretty! Reese Witherspoon has this face shape and she is beautiful! What you want to do for your blush though is actually dab a bit along the underside of your cheekbones, all the way up to your ears. Always make sure that you are using your blush brush in an upwards motion and blend in circles.

6 Rectangular Face

Now, if you have a rectangular face, you want to make sure that you are applying your blush below the outer corners of your eyes. Now, be careful, you want to blend extremely well to make sure that the motions you are putting in look natural. You want to make sure that the blush never extends lower than the tip of your nose. This will make your face appear softer.

7 Triangle Face

When you have a triangle face, typically you have a very wide forehead and then a smaller chin. To get some attention off of your forehead, this blush application tip is all about using your blush brush and applying your blush in a sideways V along your cheekbones. You want to blend all the way up to your temple and then even blush a bit over your brow, toward the center of your forehead!

Well girls, there you have it! All of my top blush application tips that really work for any face shape! So girls, what other blush application tips do you have for your face shape?

How to apply blush on oval facesInstantly awaken your complexion and beautify it with a healthy, youthful splash of color on your cheeks. Here is our ultimate guide on how to apply blush for your face shape.

1. Start by identifying your face shape

The first step is to determine your face shape according to the following figure:

How to apply blush on oval faces

  • Oval faces tend to have protruding cheekbones and a forehead that is slightly wider than the chin.
  • Heart shaped faces have broad foreheads and high cheekbones, and the face tapers to a narrow chin.
  • Square faces have a forehead that is roughly the same width as the cheekbones and chin.
  • Round faces are as wide as they are long.
  • elongated / long Faces, or “rectangular” as it is sometimes called, are similar to oval and square faces. The only difference is that the face is longer and less wide. Your forehead, cheeks, and chin area will all be pretty much the same width.
  • Triangular – If you have a triangular face, your chin is narrow and pointed and your high cheekbones are your most prominent feature.
2. Choose your blush

How to apply blush on oval faces

When it comes to blush, we always recommend choosing liquid, cream, and gel formulas. Blush powder can get stuck in pores, fine lines, and dry skin, making it obvious that you are wearing a blush. A liquid or gel-like blush feels like a second skin and adds a nice splash of color that is good for drier or older skin.

Liquid and creamy blushes are also much easier to blend and give your cheek color a seamless finish. Whichever blush you choose, the result will look more natural when it blends nicely with your skin.

3. Where to apply blush

How to apply blush on oval faces

  • Oval faces – Brush your blush over your cheekbones. You can easily find your cheekbones with your fingers. Try placing the paint just above the bone, rather than towards the indentation below, to increase the height of your cheekbone.
  • Heart shaped faces – Since your face can appear pointed, we need to soften the edges to make it look more like an oval. Apply blush to the outer corner of the eye, starting at the ear and ending at a point below the outer corner of the eye. Also add a touch of color at your temples towards the center of your forehead to even out the width of your forehead with your chin.
  • Square faces – Your cheekbones are the same width as your chin. To define it, apply your blush a little below the cheekbone. Blush in the hairline will help soften the edges of your face.
  • Round faces – try not to use pearlescent or highly reflective blushes as these reflect light well and make a surface appear rounder, which we want to avoid – matt blushes would be best for you. Brush your blush from your ear, down your cheekbones, towards your mouth. Add a touch of blush to the chin and blend it well to make your face appear longer.
  • elongated / long faces – Apply blush to the cheekbones below the outer corners of the eyes and blend well. Make sure that the blush never goes deeper than the tip of your nose. This will help shorten your functions.
  • Triangular faces – Blush should be applied to the cheekbones in a side V. Blend from the cheekbones to the temples and then stretch the blush across the forehead towards the center of the forehead. This will help even out the width of your forehead with the rest of your face.

Picking out your favorite shade of blush might be easy, but knowing how to apply blush according to your face shape is the tricky part. You may be thinking that blush is always applied to the apples of your cheeks, but that is actually not true. You need to know where to apply blush, and it all depends on the shape of your face. So, we are going to tell you how to apply blush according to your face shape to perfect your makeup.

Square Shaped Face

When applying blush to a square shaped face, you’ll want to apply it to the apples of your cheeks, towards the outer corners of your eyes. This will give your square face an elongation to your profile. When applying blush to square shaped faces, make sure the blush is concentrated on the upper part of the cheeks.

Round Shaped Face

With round faces, you want to try and elongate your face, so basically you are sucking in your cheeks. To do that, apply blush under your cheekbones, in an up and down motion towards your temple. Do not apply blush to the apples of your cheeks, as that will make your face appear more round.

Oval Shaped Face

With oval shaped faces, you want to define your features. Apply blush to the top of your cheekbones, and blend it in towards your ears. With oval shaped faces, do not apply blush to the lower part of your face, as this will define your jaw, making it look bigger.

Long Shaped Face

When applying blush to a long shaped face, you want to break up your face a bit, to give off the illusion that it is not that long. Apply blush from the apples of your cheekbones, in an angled vertical line towards your ears. Make sure the blush does not start from below the tip of the nose.

Heart Shaped Face

With heart shaped faces, you want to soften the edges of your face to try to make it look more like an oval. Apply blush to and from the end of your cheekbone, below the corner of your eye, passing your temples, and ending at your ear.

How to apply blush on oval faces

Instantly awaken and enhance your complexion with a healthy, youthful flush of colour on cheeks. Here’s our ultimate guide for how to apply blush for your face shape.

1. START BY IDENTIFYING YOUR FACE SHAPE

The first step is to work out your face shape according to the image below:

How to apply blush on oval facesOval faces tend to have prominent cheekbones and a forehead that is slightly wider than the chin.
Heart shaped faces have a wide forehead and high cheekbones, and the face tapers to a narrow chin.
Square faces have a forehead that is roughly the same width as the cheekbones and chin.
Round faces are as wide as they are long.
Oblong/long faces, or “rectangular” as it is sometimes called, are similar to oval and square-shaped faces. The only difference is, the face is longer and less wide. Your forehead, cheeks and jawline will all be pretty much the same width.
Triangular – if you have a triangular-shaped face, your chin will be narrow and pointed and your high cheekbones will be your most prominent feature.
2. PICK YOUR BLUSH

When it comes to blush, we always recommend choosing liquid, cream and gel formulas. Powder blushes can settle into pores, fine lines and dry skin, making it obvious you’re wearing a blush. A liquid or gel blush goes on like a second skin, giving a pretty flush of colour that is well suited for drier or older skins.
Liquid and cream blushes are also much easier to blend, giving a seamless finish to your cheek colour. Whatever shade of blush you choose, the result will look more natural if it blends beautifully into your skin.
If you’ve never used a liquid blush before, watch as Makeup Artist Daniel Sandler shows how to apply our multi-award winning Watercolour Liquid Cheek Colour:

3. WHERE TO APPLY YOUR BLUSHER
Oval faces – sweep your blush over your cheekbones. You can easily find your cheekbone with your fingers – aim to place the colour just above the bone rather than towards the hollow beneath it to help raise the height of your cheekbone.
Heart shaped faces – because your face can appear pointy, we need to soften the edges so it appears more like an oval. Apply blush to the outer corner of your cheekbone, starting by your ear and ending at a point below the outer corner of your eye. Also add a touch of colour by your temples, towards the centre of your forehead, to help balance the width of your forehead with your chin.
Square faces – your cheekbones are the same width as your chin, so to help define them apply your blush slightly below the cheekbone. Blush in the hairline will help soften the edges of your face.
Round faces – try not to use pearlised or highly reflective blushers as these reflect the light well and make a surface appear more round, which we want to avoid – matte blushers would be best for you. Sweep your blush from the ear down the cheekbone towards the mouth. Add a little touch of blush to the chin and blend it well to make your face appear longer.
Oblong/long faces – Apply blush on cheekbones below the outer corners of the eyes and blend well. Be sure the blush never extends lower than the tip of the nose. This will help shorten your features.
Triangular faces – Blush should be applied in a sideways V on the cheekbones. Blend up from your cheekbones to your temple and then extend the blush over your brow a bit toward the center of your forehead. This will help to balance the width of your forehead with the rest of your face.

How to apply blush on oval faces

A blush can do miracles for your face! It can make you look more awake while adding dimension and a sun-kissed flush to your already beautiful face. Depending on where you wear blush, you can either look cute like a K-pop singer or get an envious bone structure like the Kardashians (via Glamour). You may think all you have to do is put a little color on the apple of your cheeks but finding the right blush, blending technique, and placement is key to achieving a highly flattering look (via Good Housekeeping).

Blush comes in various textures and what you choose is totally up to your preference. Cream blush is great for dry and dull complexions, especially for winter. Powder blush, on the other hand, gives you a more subtle color for oilier skin and hotter days (via Makeup.com).

Let’s quickly pick the right blush for your skin tone. A pal pink blush will look best on fair skin. For medium tone, opt for a shade of apricot. The most flattering color will be dark berry or coral if you have dark skin. To make it easier, you can also try Orgasm by NARS, which is universally flattering on all skin tones. Of course, there are no set rules on how and where you should wear blush but working with the God-given face of yours can actually give you an illusion of sculpted cheekbones while completely changing the appearance of the shape of your face (via Allure).

The proper placement of blush can lift, sculpt, and soften your face

How to apply blush on oval faces

If your face is oval like Jessica Alba, you have prominent cheeks and an oval chin. One trick is to apply blush to the most prominent part of your cheekbone and blend it down towards your earlobe (via Nykaa). Then, add a tiny bit of blush to your temples for an airbrushed finish. For those beauties with a square face like Olivia Wilde, you have a naturally strong jawline. Makeup artist Camara Aunique shared this trick with Allure, “By concentrating on the apples of the cheeks, but keeping it close to your nose and then lightly extending the pigment out to the hairline, your cheeks will appear round and sculpted.”

If you have prominent cheekbones and a narrow chin, you may be blessed with a heart-shaped face like Reese Witherspoon. Sephora makeup artist Hellen Phillips told Byrdie, “Most people with this face shape have prominent cheekbones, which is a lovely feature.” You can try to apply blush in a “C” shape from the top of the temple to cheekbone and blend well without going overboard (via Good Housekeeping). It is pretty easy to apply blush when you have a round face like Gabrielle Union. Makeup artist Sarah Biggers told Allure, “You want to put your blush a little bit lower than the apples of the cheeks, extending it back to the hairline.” Biggers added that this trick gives the face a “lifted” effect.

Makeup is fun, and there are no set rules, so experiment with looks and see what you love.

Blush can highlight your cheekbones and give you a glowing complexion. Not everyone should apply blush in the same way. The way you apply your blush will depend on the type of face shape you have. Applying blush in the right way can help you change the shape of your face. Depending on where you use blush, you can make your face look longer, shorter, or softer. Here are some tips to guide you.

Round Face

If you have full cheeks and a curved jaw line, you have a round face. When you put on blush, smile and quickly wipe a cream stick blush on the apples of your cheeks. Then use a foundation brush to work toward your temples and earlobes using medium strokes. This method will highlight your bone structure.

Oval Face

If your face is long with a narrow forehead and chin and prominent cheekbones, you have an oval face. Put blush on a synthetic brush, get rid of the excess, and gently blend the blush from the most prominent parts of your cheekbones downward and up toward your temples. Use a tiny bit above your temples. This will highlight your cheekbones and eyes.

Heart-Shaped Face

Someone with a heart-shaped face has prominent cheekbones, a narrower chin, and a longer face. If you have a heart-shaped face, you should put some blush on your brush, shake off the extra, and apply it from the top of your temples to your cheekbones in a C-shaped pattern. Use some more blush along your cheekbones and then diffuse it up and in toward your temples. Make sure the blush is well blended. This will give you a glowing look that will accentuate your eyes and your high cheekbones.

Square Face

If your face has straight sides and a flat jaw line, you have a square face. You want to use blush to make the angular look softer. You will need to cover your cheekbones all the way from the edges of your nose to your hair line. Use cream blush and a synthetic brush. Sweep the blush across your cheekbones, starting at the bottom and working your way up with long and light strokes. Gently blend the blush downward.

Oblong Face

If your forehead, cheeks, and jaw are all around the same width, you have an oblong face, or a soft rectangle. Start out by applying blush at the apples of your cheeks. Blend it toward your nose and then toward your temples. Blend the blush downward to avoid highlighting your cheekbones. Apply a little more blush on your forehead and to the sides of your eyebrows. Applying blush this way will flatter your entire face.

Blush is the most loved makeup product amongst all. Blush gives us that picture perfect look while it also contributes to correct our face shape. Applied in the proper way, it can make chubby cheeks slim and skinny faces look full. The most common blush shade is pink; the other popular colors are coral, bronze etc.

There are four major and common face shapes, i.e. Round Face, Oval Face, Square Face and Heart shaped Face. Not all face shapes required similar makeup or blush applying technique. Different face shapes has different features to highlight and hide. Here are explained how to apply blush according to each face shape.

How to apply blush on oval faces

Round Face: Round face is wider than longer; and that is why you will need to cut down the width to make your face slim. To apply blush on round face, you can take the darker shades as it will help you make your face look slim. Apply your blush in a sideways V on your cheekbones and blend towards your ears. You can also apply only some amount of the blush on your chin area, and make sure to blend it.

Oval Face: Oval is said to be the ideal face, (says who right?). The forehead is little bit wider than the chin. Cheekbones and forehead almost have the similar width but the width cuts itself down right from the cheeks to the much narrowed or can say pointed chin. As said before, oval face is the ideal face; there are almost no parts to hide with blush except for highlighting the cheekbones. Apply any shade of blusher on the cheekbones and gently blend it moving upwards.

Square Face: Square face has a wide forehead and the width is almost similar to the width of the cheekbones and jaw; making the face square shape. Apply any dark shade blush on the cheekbones leaving a half inch space from your eyes; and gently blend it towards your temple. Also apply blush on the forehead and chin area; blending it well.

Heart Shaped Face: Heart shaped faces are very rare. It has wide forehead, little bit wider cheekbones and narrow chin. Apply your blush from the starting if the cheekbones to the middle of the cheeks. You don’t need to blend it towards the temple; the idea is to concentrate on your cheeks. And also do not apply blush on the chin, as the narrow or pointed chin might not look good.

Enhance your beauty by enhancing the specialties of your face shape. Figure out your face shape and apply blush according to it to achieve a professional makeup at home. But, always remember, choose blush shades keeping your skin tone in mind and don’t go overboard or else you will end up looking like clown :P.

How to apply blush on oval faces

Why do you apply blush to the cheeks? The reason is because you would want to apply some color to the cheeks and to make it look healthy and flushed. But first, you would need to find the right color and know How to Apply Blush the right way.

Techniques To Apply Blush

Before we tell you techniques to apply blush the right way, we would want to teach you a little more on how to choose the right blush type and in accord to your skin type that too, and then we would look at the blush color, and how to make the best techniques work like magic for you.

What Is Your Skin Type?

We would take a look at How to Apply Blush for sure, but first we would check on the skin type.

  1. If you have dry skin, we would look at cream blushes which are sheer and thin in nature and allows better layering on the cheekbones.
  2. For oily skin, we would consider powder blushes which would absorb the extra oils on the skin and the blush would remain on the face for long.
  3. For combination skin we would look at a mix of powder to cream blush types, which helps let the color stay with a healthy glow irrespective of the time and occasion.

Color Wise Speaking

When it comes to color, we would look at choosing blush that is closest to the undertones of the skin. Please refer to the post on the color wheel to understand the undertones, which teaches us the techniques to apply blush and makeup. Blushers help bring about a flushed healthy look and not a flushed dead look, which is why you would want to use the techniques in an apt way for the best cheeks to flaunt. Hence, choose the closest blush color which syncs in well with your cheeks.

How To Apply!

  1. Pick up a reputed blusher brush
  2. Sideways dip into the blush powder or the jar
  3. Stroke the upper cheekbone all the way to the temple to create a long look, or
  4. Stroke from the lower cheek to the ear perimeter for a wider look
  5. You could also make round strokes from the temple to the cheek and the jawline for a sassy look to come through.

Blush For Square-Shaped Faces

For the square face shaped women, we would focus more on the apples of the cheek. Here the blush needs to be rounded off on the cheeks in a circular fashion. This would be one of the different ways to apply blush, which helps soften the angular features of the face and draw more attention to the cheeks and the overall roundest zone of the face.

For The Diamond Shaped Face

Women with diamond shaped faces would need to work more on the lower half of the face, where the blush would be focused on the top of the cheekbones and blended towards the ears to create more width and enhance the eye zone. Cheekbones thus get highlighted here.

Bangs Strokes For The Blush On Long Faces

Women with long faces need to break it up when using blushers which mean horizontal swipes for the face. This helps widen the face and makes the apples of the cheeks fill in with a healthy glow. A little blush needs to be used on the temples and the cheekbone area too. Here was where to apply blush on a long face!

Dolling Up The Heart Shaped Face

For heart shaped faces, we would use the blush on the end part of the cheekbones, just as you would use the contouring theory here. In doing so, you would know how to apply blush for different face shapes and not just follow the rule on where to apply blush for a round face. Such strokes would help define the jawline and bring more attention to the flushed cheeks.

For The Round Face

The aim here would be to bring in more definition to round chubby cheeks, where you would have to suck the cheeks in and sweep the blush just below the cheekbones. Don’t touch the apples of the face or the face would get heavy and rounder than before. So no apple touches needed for the round face and this is where to apply blush on a chubby face.

Round

Round faces are circular and are more or less equal in length and width.

“To make a round face look narrower, apply blush on the apples of the cheeks towards the temples in a sweeping or sideways motion. [Apply] the blush in one direction, like you’re creating a slanted line going upwards.”

Square

Square faces have a strong and flat jaw and are more angular than round faces.

How to apply blush on oval faces

“Basically, with the square face, you want to give the illusion of a lifted face. Start at the apples of the cheeks but blend upward in a v shaped pattern to lift the cheeks. If they apply blush like [contour], the face becomes distorted because the square jaw is already so [strong], and wrong blush application makes the chin look pointy.”

Heart

Like an inverted triangle, heart-shaped faces are wider at the top and narrow at the bottom. Most have a very prominent and pointed chin.

“To reduce the harshness of a pointy chin, apply blush under the natural line of the cheekbones—apply blush below the apples of the cheeks. You’re simply avoiding the cheek area altogether and going around it to open up the inside of the face. The cheek part close to the nose needs to have no blush at all.”

Oval

Oval faces are longer than they are wide. There are hardly or no sharp angles to them.

“If our goal for square faces is to lift the cheeks, we want to give oval faces [more horizontal dimension]. So to balance a narrow [yet long] face, apply blush horizontally. Blend well to avoid hard lines that look like a stripe across the face.”

Of all the amazing beauty products out there, you might overlook blush as an add-on: Rookie mistake. Just a few swipes of blush can make your complexion look healthier, and make your skin look more youthful. It adds a glow that bronzer and highlighter just can’t mimic. However, it can be one of the most confusing makeup products to use. It’s not as simple as a swirl on your cheeks.

Whether your blush won’t stay put, you’re worried you’re using the wrong color or formula, or you just don’t even know where to start, we’re here to help. Getting a pretty, long-lasting glow is possible, no matter if your skin is naturally oily, dry, or just plain sweaty. These brilliant blush hacks that make this super flattering (and surprisingly versatile) product work for your face shape, skin tone, and lifestyle.

1. First, prep your skin the right way.

To make your blush blend into your skin and stay put all day, always wash and moisturize your face first. Dry (or oily) skin doesn’t hold makeup as well, so keeping your skin healthy, exfoliated, clean, and supple allows makeup to blend in beautifully and last longer.

To make your blush last even longer, start with a makeup primer, which preps skin and gives a no-slip canvas to help makeup last all day. If you don’t want to invest in another beauty product, layer blush on top of foundation or a tinted moisturizer to even out your skin tone and help give the blush something to stick to.

2. Pick a shade that works with your skin tone.

Blush isn’t a one-size-fits-all kind of deal — you need to choose the right shade to flatter your complexion. Something too dark or too bright can actually age you instead of giving you that warm, youthful glow. The key is to choose something that’s close to your natural flush and the best way to figure out what that is is to pinch your cheeks. If you’re still not sure, here are some tips for finding your best shade:

If you have very pale, fair skin, opt for light pinks for a pretty flush of color that won’t overpower your tone. Pale pink and lilac formulas give a sheer wash of color that flatter your light complexion without looking garish. A safe bet? Covergirl Cheekers Blendable Powder Blush Natural Rose. It’s a Beauty Award Winner and under $4.

If you have light-medium skin, choose a peachy pink shade to give your skin a pretty glow. Since this shade is universally flattering, if you’re in doubt, try it in your desired formula. We love NARS Blush in Orgasm and Maybelline Face Studio Master Glaze Blush Stick in Coral Sheen.

For golden or olive skin tones, the warm undertones to the skin can stand up to brighter, punchier pinks. We like Revlon Cream Blush in Flushed for these medium skin tones.

Darker skin tones can go for brighter hues with warm undertones, like a bright apricot, to deliver an ethereal glow and truly radiant results. Try Milani Baked Blush in Corallina — While the shade seems bright, it buffs into the skin for a natural look.

How to apply blush on oval faces

The flush on the cheek gives an instant glow to the face. Some may be blessed with a naturally-flushed skin while others may resort to the use of blush as a part of their makeup regime. Did you know that applying blush the wrong way can spoil the whole look? Like we know that each face shape and complexion may require different skincare and makeup regime, the same goes with the application of blush too. In this article below, we bring to you a detailed list on the different face types and the right way to apply blush for an instantly glowing face.

Round Face

When the length of your face is equal to the width of your face then the shape of your face is round. For people with round faces the ideal way to apply blush is to sweep the blush away from your ears through your cheekbones towards your mouth. Doing so will help you in creating an illusion of a slimmer face. Apply a bit of blush onto your chin in order to make your face look a little longer.

Do not use a highly reflective blusher on your face as it will reflect the light and will make your face look even rounder. Try and opt for a matte blush instead.

Rectangular Face

People with a width similar to that of their forehead are said to have a rectangle shaped face. People with this facial shape should try and apply blush below their cheekbone in order to define them. In addition to this, these people should also focus upon blending the blush in with your hairline. This trick is said to be very effective in softening out the edges of your face and making it appear rounder in shape by creating an illusion of reduced angles.

Oval Face

When your forehead is slightly broader than the chin and the cheekbones are the most prominent part of the face then it is considered to be an oval shaped face. The idea here is to highlight the most prominent part of the face that are the cheekbones. In order to do all you need to do is place the colour just above the bone rather than blending it into the hollow beneath. Doing so will help you in getting that flushed look while providing a lifting effect to your face.

Heart Face

A face shape that starts off with a broad forehead and becomes narrow as it goes down to the chin. People with this facial shape have high cheekbones as it gets narrower as it goes down.

With this facial shape the main aim is to soften up the pointy edges of the faceface. Doing so will make it appear more like the oval one.

In order to soften up the pointy areas of this face type start by applying the blush onto the outer corners of the cheekbone. While starting off at the edge of your cheekbones, take it upwards towards the outer corner of your eyes. Take some of the blush and apply it onto the temples of your forehead starting from the hairline towards the center of your forehead to soften up the sharp edges and balance the width of forehead with the chin.

Oblong Face

An elongated face shape that lies somewhere in between the oval and rectangular face shape, oblong is a face shape where the width of the forehead, cheekbones and chin are more or less similar to each other. The main aim here is to reduce the width of the face and make it appear a bit slimmer. To do so, what you can do is apply the blush on a point just below the outer corner of your eye in the direction of the cheekbones. This will not just help to provide a slimmer illusion to your face but also to make your features look a but short.

Apply Blush To Flatter Your Face Shape

Some of you may be thinking that you know how to apply blush, it’s just a quick dab over the apples of your cheeks right? Well, there’s actually a lot more to it than that.

Blush can be used to soften your features, make your face appear longer or shorter and raise your cheekbones. Whatever your face shape, I’ve got the blush trick for you.

How To Identify Your Face Shape

To apply blush like a pro, the first thing you need to do is identify your face shape.

  • Heart-shaped: Like Reese Witherspoon, you’ll have high cheekbones, a narrow chin and a slightly wider forehead.
  • Square: In a very Keira Knightley-esk way, your forehead is more or less the same width as your cheekbones and chin.
  • Oval: Much like Rihanna, your forehead is slightly wider than your chin and you have prominent cheekbones.
  • Round: Picture Selena Gomez. Your face is as wide as it is long.
  • Long: Boasting Meryl Streep vibes, your forehead, jawline and cheeks are roughly the same length.

At GLOSSY, we’re big fans of the naturally radiant ‘I-woke-up-refreshed’ look that you can achieve with strategically placed blush. Here are a few tips on how to apply your latest Advent gift.

Heart-shaped

With a heart-shaped face, you shouldn’t just focus on your cheeks. Instead, you want to create a softening blended look. Apply blush to your cheekbones, sweeping from your ear down to the corner of your eye.

Square

If you’ve got a strong jawline, using blush to define your cheekbones will help soften the edges of your face. Apply your blush slightly below your cheekbones a few inches from the side of your nose.

Oval

For those of you with an oval face, you’re lucky enough to be able to pull off most blush looks. You can either apply it to the apples of your cheeks and blend, or add a little colour just above your cheekbones to raise their height.

Round

If you want to slim your round face, sweep your blush from your temples along the cheekbones and down towards the mouth. Don’t forget to blend well. You can then make your face appear longer by adding a touch of blush to your chin too.

Long

If you’re looking to shorten your features, make sure no colour extends past the tip of your nose. Instead, you want to apply blush to the apples of your cheeks and blend out towards the temples.
