On the one hand, that means you can prepare to be asked that question and practice answers to be ready to tell a good story about yourself.

On the other hand, what kind of information is best shared in an interview when this question is presented? It can stop someone in their tracks, even if it’s expected, because how often are we asked to give a summary of your personality to a stranger?

Take a deep breath. It’s going to be ok: Here’s some advice on how to handle this question when it inevitably comes up.

  • Speak in present tense statements. Talk about where you are today: What’s your current position, what you like about the job, what you’ve learned, any achievements of which you’re particularly proud and something that surprised you about the position. By providing a summary of your current place of employment, you’re providing insight into your abilities and daily tasks while easing into the conversation and getting warmed up.
  • Or, talk about where you’ve come from. How did you get here? Where did you go to school (at any level)? How did you become interested in this line of work? What inspired you to apply for this job? If you’ve been working for a while, talk about your career path, what you’ve learned from previous positions and what you’re hoping to learn should you be selected for this job. On the surface it might not seem like this is directly connected to work, but it can hint to the hiring manager about different aspects of the position in which you might excel: creative thinking, attention to detail, a strong sense of commitment and a willingness to learn and try new things.
  • Whatever you discuss, keep it to the point. This is a warm-up question, to get you comfortable and increase your confidence, but it doesn’t need to be a full recitation of every interest you’ve ever had, or every task you’ve completed at every job, or all of your favorite things. Think about which approach you want to take before the interview starts and prepare some highlights.
  • Remember to tie your answer, if possible, to the job at hand. You want to find ways to connect your interests, your life and your work experience to the job for which you’re interviewing. It can be in small ways, but slowly and gradually start building your case for why you’re the one they want to hire — in fact, you’re the best possible person for the job because of how well it fits into your strengths and interests. However, you need to get there, create a path that leads directly from your experiences to their doorstep.

Notice how she shared personal information that is irrelevant to the interviewer (having good professor, not having enough time to engaged in more school activities, etc). By the time she states her passion in information technology, the interviewer might have already lost interest in her.

After looking at a poor answer, let’s move on to see how an ideal answer looks like.

Good Afternoon, I am Jane a graduate from XYZ University, with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. I was also the captain of our school’s netball team and was part of the organising team for the school’s annual arts festival in 2019.

“Tell me about yourself” may seem like an easy job interview question that your whole life has prepared you to answer, but the open-ended nature of this question leaves job seekers stumped on where to start. Does an interviewer actually want to know about your entire employment history and personal life?

This common question is actually a critical test of a job candidate’s communication skills, so you don’t want to wing it or screw it up. The good news is that if you can pitch the story of your career, it can help prepare you for any question that follows. “It’s at the heart of the entire interview,” said Judith Humphrey, founder of the Canadian communications firm The Humphrey Group. “What you’re really doing is you’re pitching yourself as an ideal candidate for that position.”

Sabina Nawaz, a global CEO coach who worked at Microsoft for more than 14 years, said it is the first question for which she preps people when they come to her for interview guidance. “It’s the opportunity for the candidate to take control of the narrative and tell their story in a way that really matters to their audience,” Nawaz said.

It takes hard work and extensive preparation to answer this question well, but it can be done. Here’s how:

Avoid this major trap.

When you go to a job interview, your interviewer has presumably read your résumé, so don’t repeat the information.

In other words, don’t just say, “I have experiences with this, or I got my education at that place, or I have this degree, or I did this kind of special project,” said Josh Doody, a salary negotiation coach and former hiring manager. “That’s what most people will do. It’s easy. It’s your instinct to recite things that are already on your résumé.”

By doing this, you’re missing out on a key opportunity to give a hiring manager new information about yourself. “You don’t want to give an information dump,” Humphrey said.

Give a clear message.

Humphrey suggested forming the answer around a compelling message about yourself and having a set of three points to prove this message. If your main message is that you’re an entrepreneur, your points could be something like, “I believe I have the qualities [of] a good entrepreneur. I have some experience in this area. And I’m looking forward to this next position that will give me an opportunity that will hone my skills,” Humphrey said.

To differentiate yourself from the pack of candidates, you need to tell a story about how the team you are interviewing for will be better off if you’re hired. That means doing prior research on their goals so that the story you tell is one they want to hear.

Imagine you’re applying to join a marketing team that is trying to use social media more, an example Doody offered. When asked to “tell me about yourself,” Doody said you could say, ”‘I’m really passionate about social media; I’ve been using social for 10 years, personally and professionally. One of my favorite things to do is find new opportunities to reach new audiences with new platforms. And I know that your team is currently branching out and using Instagram as an advertising platform. That’s something I’m really interested in helping facilitate.’ You’ve told them a lot about yourself there, but everything is specifically aimed at a goal or need of that team, as opposed to something that’s only about you.”

By leading with the message of your story up front, you prime your interviewer on what to listen for. Nawaz suggested professionals could start the answer this way: “‘There are three things about me that I have used repeatedly throughout my career that are particularly relevant for this job.’” Then, you talk about how you’ve applied these three strengths, like: “In 2017, we were faced with a crisis. This was the crisis. Here was the problem. Here’s how I used A, B and C to address the crisis. So as you can see A, B, C are really strengths that I rely on.”

Do your homework on two crucial fronts.

You are not just telling someone a fact about yourself. You’re telling a story, and stories take work to create.

Coming up with a good story means getting reflective about what made your career accomplishments something you’re proud of and what strengths those accomplishments highlight. Nawaz said candidates should ask themselves, “Which of those past strengths do you still want to carry forward with you?”

Don’t pick a generic strength to elaborate on. “Everyone is going to say, ‘I’m smart, I work hard and I get things done,’” said Nawaz. “[Pick] those that will really set you apart and answer the question why. Why does it matter for this particular job?”

To come up with multiple career accomplishments or examples for different interview questions, Nawaz suggests talking with others. “I especially encourage them to talk to people who know them. Partners, friends, co-workers who will bring up different stories than the ones you remember.”

The other part of that research equation means knowing what’s at stake for the company with this job opening. “What they really are asking you is ‘Tell me why you are going to help me,’” Doody said. “If you are a prepared candidate, what you’ve done is you’ve figured out those things.”

If you are preparing for the first interview in the process, Doody suggested reading the job description, Googling the company, reading the first page of their Form 10-K if they are a public company in the U.S, and reading blog posts and news clippings from the team you are joining. “What you’re looking for is what is the company up to, what are they trying to accomplish, what are the things that are preventing them from accomplishing those things.”

How long should it take to answer?

Citing short attention spans, Humphrey said a minute should be your maximum. Doody said that under a minute could seem rushed, while over two minutes will start to feel “more like a monologue than an answer to a question.“

The length of your answer is not an exact science. It takes using your emotional intelligence to know when someone is interested or when someone is nodding off. Read the room, and keep your career story focused and tailored to your audience. You don’t want to have a hiring manager wondering if there’s a point to what you are saying. If it becomes a meandering dialogue, Humphrey said, it “implies that the candidate doesn’t have a real sense of herself.”

There’s one question that’s guaranteed to be asked in every job interview – ‘tell me about yourself’. This question isn’t quite as straightforward as it may seem, as it’s not really so much about who you are, but about how you work. What’s really being asked is ‘why are you the right person for us to hire?’.

The hiring manager wants to know about you as a professional and how you’d fit into the company. They want to learn about you present yourself – are you confident, quiet, reserved, outgoing, etc. The manner in which you answer this question is as important as the content of the answer itself. If you find that it’s hard to talk about yourself, practice until it feels natural. A strong delivery of your answer helps project competence and confidence in your own ability.

Remember this acronym – WIIFM.

The point of answering this question is to sell yourself to the hiring manager, not to talk about your entire life story. To best do this, you’ll want to answer ‘what’s in it for me?’ – easy to remember as WIIFM. The ‘me’ in this instance is the company, so you’re essentially answering what does the company gain by hiring you?

Don’t talk about your personal life.

The interviewer wants to know who you are professionally, not personally. You can intersperse a few personal details that support your professional story while answering the question, but do so sparingly. The interviewer doesn’t need to know all of your hobbies and passions, but feel free to mention one or two if they’re relevant to the job you’re interviewing for.

Speak about your most relevant skills.

You’ll want to tailor your answer to be relevant to the role you’re interviewing for. Always speak about both soft skills and technical skills to show that you’re a well rounded employee, and then dive into role-specific skills. If it’s a management role, focus on leadership skills and highlight any successes you’ve had leading a previous team. If it’s a technical role, you should also highlight skills that could be complementary, like soft skills and leadership abilities.

Get started with brainstorming

You need to carefully plan your answer to this question. Brainstorm and ask yourself questions such as:

Which of your many qualities make you a good fit for this job?

What excites you about the job and its role?

Why do you want to work in that company?

With this brainstorming, you see the need to research the company. Get some insight into their mission, values and goals. How do these match your own professional goals?

You should think of your areas of specialization, the training you must have received and the numerous skills that could make you stand out. Reviewing the job description can help you select the right skills to highlight. How does the job role even fit into your future career goals? You should have these all figured out.

Talk about your past experiences and achievements that relate to that position

After you must have read the job description, you should take note of the skills enlisted as their requirement. Select the ones you possess amongst the skills and highlight them. Normally, you start from your recent professional experience to your past and then your future visions and goals.

Focus on those strengths, skills and abilities that you can support with examples. After coming up with the perfect one, build up your story in such a way that it ends up highlighting what you were able to achieve with those skills and abilities.

Think of how your current or past job relates to the job you are applying for

Perhaps you are making a lateral transition from your former role to one that requires a different set of skills, you should be able to explain how your current skills relate to and translate into the new job.

If the position you are applying for is a higher position, you should explain how you will deal with the greater responsibilities that would come with the position. If it is the same position, it is, of course, easier to link the former job to the new one.

Highlight your personality

‘Tell me about yourself’ is a question that s directed at you so the hiring manager could know about you on a general note. It is focused on your career or professional experience but not restricted to it.

It will be great to talk about your personality (not launching into details about your personal life). You can mention your hobbies, your personal achievements or even your engagements and services in the community. If you mention things like running, golf, tennis, skiing and yoga as your hobby, it would show that you are quite fit and energetic. Other ones like puzzles or brainteasers would help demonstrate your intellectual development.

There should however be a smooth transition from your professional life to your personal life.

Don’t give too much or too little information

You should know how to strike a balance, sharing too little or too much information might jeopardize the chances of your answer impressing your interviewer.

In as much as your interviewer is not interested in your whole life story, sharing too little could leave him or her wondering if you don’t have enough information to back up the claims on your CV or if you don’t just want to be open.

Do not include irrelevancies in your response and desist from political or religious talks unless in a situation where you are certain your interviewer would not mind.

So what’s the secret to crafting the perfect response to this common question? Pointing broke it down:

  • Start off with a brief introduction that includes your name, your school, and what you’re studying (if you’re a college student or a recent graduate). For instance, she starts with “I am Jessica Pointing. I’m studying physics and computer science at Harvard.”
  • Delve into some of the highlights of your résumé. Don’t overdo it — just mention some of the accomplishments that you’re proudest of.
  • Briefly talk about why you want to work for the company. Be specific to the role you’re applying for. Make sure to go into how your skills align with the role.

“That reminds the interviewer why you are a good candidate for the job,” Pointing said. And that, at the end of the day, is your ultimate goal.

A while back, I went to some job search seminars and this is one of the questions that we focused on: "Tell me about yourself?" This is what they told us (in a hand-out).

What does the employer want to know?

What you have done in the recent past that is related to the job. This could include relevant training and education, recent jobs and transferable skills that relate to this position. Do not get into your life history, stick to recent past or skills and experience that are more directly related to the job at hand.

Remember this simple acronym W.A.P.

WAP: Work (80%), Attributes (15%), Personal (5%)

The length of this response should be about 1.5 minutes to 2 minutes. This response is an opportunity to make a good first impression in quick summary of how your background fits with the position.

You want to tell them about your work skills and attributes. Have 10 attributes ready, 5 of which you will list. Out of those 5, 1 of them should be your strongest one. Say a sentence or two about your strongest one. The other 5 are backups in case you are asked "What are some of your strengths?"

"I have completed the Technical Writing Certificate at [Education Place], and I have worked as a Technical Writer for more than a year a [company 1] and [company 2]. At [Company 1] I was in charge of the reviewing the quality of online courses for the e-learning division of the company. At [Company 2], I was in charge of writing documentation for features of the new version of their software, [software name], and making sure that the information provided was accurate and informative. I am very good a communicating information, by attentive, patient, diligent, and excellent use of words. One of the main reasons why I went to school for Technical Writing is because I was complimented on my teaching abilities, where I put all those skills to use."

Notice how concise and straight to the point the sentences were structured? I started strong, and finished strong mentioning my previous experience, my achievements, and my intentions. You only have a minute or two to win the interviewer’s impression, so it’s best to write down your answers and practice it over and over until you’ve memorized it, but making it sound conversational. And once you get past this, the follow-up questions will then be easy to answer.

However, it is arguably the most important interview question as it sets the tone for the rest of the interview.

The way you respond to this question will decide the success of the interview and ultimately whether or not you will get the job. Don’t worry too much– the interviewer is on your side and they want to hire you. They want more than anything for you to crush the interview, so that they can stop spending hours reviewing resumes and doing interviews.

When answering this question, there are two rules you should consider:

“Tell me about yourself” may seem like an easy job interview question that your whole life has prepared you to answer, but the open-ended nature of this question leaves job seekers stumped on where to start. Does an interviewer actually want to know about your entire employment history and personal life?

This common question is actually a critical test of a job candidate’s communication skills, so you don’t want to wing it or screw it up. The good news is that if you can pitch the story of your career, it can help prepare you for any question that follows. “It’s at the heart of the entire interview,” said Judith Humphrey, founder of the Canadian communications firm The Humphrey Group. “What you’re really doing is you’re pitching yourself as an ideal candidate for that position.”

How to answer tell me something about yourself in a job interview

Sabina Nawaz, a global CEO coach who worked at Microsoft for more than 14 years, said it is the first question for which she preps people when they come to her for interview guidance. “It’s the opportunity for the candidate to take control of the narrative and tell their story in a way that really matters to their audience,” Nawaz said.

It takes hard work and extensive preparation to answer this question well, but it can be done. Here’s how:

Avoid this major trap.

When you go to a job interview, your interviewer has presumably read your résumé, so don’t repeat the information.

In other words, don’t just say, “I have experiences with this, or I got my education at that place, or I have this degree, or I did this kind of special project,” said Josh Doody, a salary negotiation coach and former hiring manager. “That’s what most people will do. It’s easy. It’s your instinct to recite things that are already on your résumé.”

By doing this, you’re missing out on a key opportunity to give a hiring manager new information about yourself. “You don’t want to give an information dump,” Humphrey said.

Give a clear message.

Humphrey suggested forming the answer around a compelling message about yourself and having a set of three points to prove this message. If your main message is that you’re an entrepreneur, your points could be something like, “I believe I have the qualities [of] a good entrepreneur. I have some experience in this area. And I’m looking forward to this next position that will give me an opportunity that will hone my skills,” Humphrey said.

To differentiate yourself from the pack of candidates, you need to tell a story about how the team you are interviewing for will be better off if you’re hired. That means doing prior research on their goals so that the story you tell is one they want to hear.

Imagine you’re applying to join a marketing team that is trying to use social media more, an example Doody offered. When asked to “tell me about yourself,” Doody said you could say, ”‘I’m really passionate about social media; I’ve been using social for 10 years, personally and professionally. One of my favorite things to do is find new opportunities to reach new audiences with new platforms. And I know that your team is currently branching out and using Instagram as an advertising platform. That’s something I’m really interested in helping facilitate.’ You’ve told them a lot about yourself there, but everything is specifically aimed at a goal or need of that team, as opposed to something that’s only about you.”

By leading with the message of your story up front, you prime your interviewer on what to listen for. Nawaz suggested professionals could start the answer this way: “‘There are three things about me that I have used repeatedly throughout my career that are particularly relevant for this job.’” Then, you talk about how you’ve applied these three strengths, like: “In 2017, we were faced with a crisis. This was the crisis. Here was the problem. Here’s how I used A, B and C to address the crisis. So as you can see A, B, C are really strengths that I rely on.”

Do your homework on two crucial fronts.

You are not just telling someone a fact about yourself. You’re telling a story, and stories take work to create.

Coming up with a good story means getting reflective about what made your career accomplishments something you’re proud of and what strengths those accomplishments highlight. Nawaz said candidates should ask themselves, “Which of those past strengths do you still want to carry forward with you?”

Don’t pick a generic strength to elaborate on. “Everyone is going to say, ‘I’m smart, I work hard and I get things done,’” said Nawaz. “[Pick] those that will really set you apart and answer the question why. Why does it matter for this particular job?”

To come up with multiple career accomplishments or examples for different interview questions, Nawaz suggests talking with others. “I especially encourage them to talk to people who know them. Partners, friends, co-workers who will bring up different stories than the ones you remember.”

The other part of that research equation means knowing what’s at stake for the company with this job opening. “What they really are asking you is ‘Tell me why you are going to help me,’” Doody said. “If you are a prepared candidate, what you’ve done is you’ve figured out those things.”

If you are preparing for the first interview in the process, Doody suggested reading the job description, Googling the company, reading the first page of their Form 10-K if they are a public company in the U.S, and reading blog posts and news clippings from the team you are joining. “What you’re looking for is what is the company up to, what are they trying to accomplish, what are the things that are preventing them from accomplishing those things.”

The length of your answer is not an exact science. It takes using your emotional intelligence to know when someone is interested or when someone is nodding off.
