There are a number of ways on how to achieve prints on t-shirts. One of these ways is airbrushing. With the different tools and paint colors, achieving realistic airbrush designs for shirts can be both time consuming but totally worth the effort.

Basic Tools for T-Shirt Airbrushing

The tools for airbrush t-shirts include your airbrush bottle, the airbrush, and the paints. You can have just one airbrush which you can use for all colors since the bottles can be replaced, but for those who are working on more complicated airbrush designs for shirts, having at least three to speed up the work can help.

Paints for airbrushing are usually water-based paints which stick really well onto your shirt. There are a lot of pre-mixed paints for airbrushing so this is usually not a problem to find in stores. Keep the shirt color in mind when choosing the paints and imagine how they would stand out against your fabric. Once you have these basic tools, you can begin with the actual paint work. Start by having a sketch of the image you would like to achieve or visualize the image on your shirt. You can freestyle, but having a rough sketch can help come up with a better-looking shirt.

Pros and Cons of Airbrush T-Shirts

T-shirts with airbrushed prints can be just as good as t-shirts with prints made by machines especially if the paints used are great. The prints will last long and can be very durable too. However, since the airbrushing technique requires manual labor, it may take a much longer time for the artwork to be completed on the shirt. Because of this, rates of airbrushed shirts may be more expensive depending on the picture printed out on the shirt.

Airbrushing also takes practice and a great amount of skill to finish—add to that are the more expensive tools like the airbrush itself. Usually, only people who have had a lot of experience with airbrushing engage in the t-shirt airbrushing business since it would take time and skills to come up with satisfactory results.

It can be said that compared to digital printouts which are transferred on shirts, there are no two pieces of airbrushed shirts which look alike. An airbrushed shirt would be different from another which has the same design especially if you pay attention to the smaller details. Because it takes time to finish airbrushed shirts, they are also usually harder to mass produce and bulk orders of airbrushed shirts can take longer to complete.

When it comes to the looks, they can have a more 3D effect if the artist who did it is really great, but the same 3D effect can be achieved with high-end t-shirt printing options. It is true that airbrush looks different from the usual prints but with the time it takes to finish and the potentially more expensive rates, a lot of people still prefer digital t-shirt prints.

How to airbrush t shirts

How to airbrush t shirts

In this Instructable I will show the process I used and am using to airbrush designs onto t-shirts.

I like t-shirts, and there are many how-to’s out there on “screen printing”. Whenever I read or watch these, I always think to myself, “But there has to be a better way! I don’t want to try to find a special ink-permeable fabric and make a frame!”. I’ll admit that many Instructables and how-to’s give links to places to purchase the necessary items, but I hate paying for shipping. Another of my pet peeves with DIY “screen printing” is that in many cases (not all) the design you spend so much time drawing out and preparing to print is ruined after using it once! It’s ridiculous.

Anyway, enough of my anti-screen-printing nonsense, on to the good stuff.

*I apologize for less than adequate pictures, I only have the camera on my phone, and my basement does not have much light, but I tried really hard nontheless. : (

Step 1: Required Items

You’ll need a few things to make the dream of freedom from screen printing a reality.

1. A design to put on your t-shirt.
2. A t-shirt to put your design on.
(I go to the craft store, they always have a huge bin of “closeout shirts” really cheap.)
3. An airbrush.
(See next step)
4. Paint, or “ink”. Must be water-based!
(I am using “crafter’s acrylic” paint, from my local craft store. It’s about 50 cents a bottle, and seems to work really well. Therefore I say, “No! I won’t buy your overpriced special t-shirt paint!”)
5. Contact paper.
(We use it to cover school books, it’s clear plastic that is sticky on one side. Go to your local office supply store.)
6. General hand tools/supplies.
(Razor blade/Exacto knife, Sharpie marker, pencil, scissors, newspaper, etc., more may be mentioned in later steps, but they’re household items.)

Step 2: The Airbrush

I made my own airbrush, which I should probably write an Instructable about, but I didn’t take pictures as I went along : /.

They sell small airbrush kits at my local hobby store for about $20, so you could pick up one of those, and it would be way better than mine.

However, it you want to make your own like I made mine, I drew up a small paint diagram for you : ).

Step 3: Making Your Stencil

Before you can make a stencil, you need a design. I drew mine by hand and then cleaned it up on the computer. It is a fairly simple flame design, that I included below.

Then you’ll need to get out your razor blade, scissors, design, and contact paper.

First I trimmed roughly around the shape of my design.

Place your design over the contact paper, and secure with Scotch tape if you wish.

Place your design-contact paper on top of some newspaper or cutting board to protect your kitchen table.

Using your razor blade, slowly cut our the areas that you want to be airbrushed onto your t-shirt.

*Note: If you place your design onto the clear side, not the paper-covering side, or the contact paper, it should not end up backwards when you unpeel your stencil. (If this sounds confusing while reading it, it should make perfect sense when you’re making the stencil.

Step 4: Airbrushing the Shirt

Finally we’re here, where ink meets t-shirt.

Grab your stencil and peel away the paper backing.

Stick it onto your t-shirt where you want to airbrush it.
*Note: Make sure it is tight against the fabric! Mine was not, and the design came out all blurry, so i had to go around the design, stippling with a paint brush, with a similar color to the shirt to try to patch it up.

Place your t-shirt on a flat area where it won’t have any wrinkles to distort your design. I use a pizza box, and use sewing pins to keep it in place.

Use something to block drips and overspray away from the rest of the t-shirt. Newspaper is good, or another t-shirt that you don’t care about.

Spray away!
*Note: My paint is mixed with about one half water, to make it thin enough to travel up the airbrush.

Keep the stencil on the shirt for a few minutes to allow the paint to dry a little bit, then remove it and enjoy the beauty of non screen printing.

Store your stencil on wax paper to preserve the stickyness.

Step 5: The End!

Wear your t-shirt proud! You can see the final result below. You’ll notice I didn’t match the colors perfectly, but I ended up liking the two-tone flame effect, so no harm done.

It is a good idea to iron over your design once the paint is dry, then soak your t-shirt in water for a few hours to get off anything that could hurt your other clothes in the washer. Wash cold to help the paint last. Wash inside out if you’re super worried about it.

1. Use the right Airbrush – This one’s easy. If you’re at all serious about wanting to airbrush t shirts, you have to get an IWATA Eclipse HP-BCS Airbrush. It’s a bottom-feed Airbrush, meaning the Airbrush paint bottle connects directly to the bottom of the Airbrush and is sucked up and pushed out the nozzle by a siphon created from the flowing air. Start with this Airbrush first and you’ll save yourself a lot of headache.

2. Use the right Airbrush Paint – The 2 big players in Airbrush shirt paint are CREATEX and AQUAFLOW. In my experience, AQUAFLOW does “flow” a bit better but it’s hardly noticeable. You can’t go wrong with either of these two top brands.

3. Use the right T shirt – 100% pre-shrunk cotton or 50/50 blend. (50% cotton 50% polyester) I’ve had the best results by washing a new t shirt at least once before I Airbrush on it. This gets rid of most of the loose fibers and also takes care of some of that initial color fade that’s bound to happen.

4. Use a good design – Take your time here. Awesome Airbrush t shirts don’t just happen. Come up with a good design on paper first. That way you can erase and make any corrections before you actually put paint to shirt. It takes some discipline to draw first and Airbrush second, but trust me, you’ll waste a lot less shirts this way and end up with a better finished product every time.

5. Get comfortable – Keep your workspace clean and work at a comfortable height. I prefer to stand when I airbrush t shirts. I use a large peg board with shelving hooks as my easel. This makes it easy to adjust the height of my t shirt board so I’m always in a comfortable position to Airbrush without having to kneel or stretch to finish a stroke.

6. Prepare the shirt – After it’s been washed once, iron it to get the wrinkles out. Wrinkles act like magnets for airbrush paint over spray. Use clamps or clothespins to secure the shirt to the shirt board so you have a nice flat surface to work on. For maximum color fastness, spray a layer of Frog Juice or CREATEX clear extender on the area to be painted first, heat set it, then paint away.

7. Take your time – There’s no rush, yet. Until you take your show on the road and start doing malls or swap meets, take the time to master your skills first. Speed is important and it will come with time, but for now, focus on every stroke. Less is more too. Try getting that perfect fade in 1 pass instead of 2. The less paint you put on the t shirt, the better.

8. Play to your strengths – It’s definitely good to be versatile but if there’s 1 particular area of Airbrush t shirts where you really excel, go for it! Find out what you’re best at and what you love to paint the most, then master that area. It’s easier to build a reputation for being the absolute best at 1 thing, than it is to build a reputation for being pretty dang good at a lot of different things.

9. Heat press – Spray your finished airbrush shirt with another layer of CREATEX clear extender, use a heat press to heat set it at 400 degrees for 20 seconds.

10. Rinse and repeat – If you just followed the first 9 steps, you could probably get pretty far as an Airbrush shirt artist, but who wants that? We want to be the best Airbrush artist in history. Like a great man once said: “Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent” If you took a drawing I did in first grade and held it next to any other average first grader’s drawing, you would not be able to tell which was which. 30 years later, if you took a drawing I did now and held it next to any other average 30 year olds drawing, I’ll bet you could tell the difference. Why? Because I practiced more than they did.

Most of the times you will need to heat set your paints so that they can be washed without fading or bleeding. There are a few ways that you can heat set your airbrush art onto the t-shirts so that it lasts. One way is all the design to fully dry then place a cloth over it and iron the shirt with the cloth between the t-shirt and the iron. Always keep the iron moving though so that you do not burn the material. Another great way if you are doing this at home is to allow the design to dry then turn the shirt inside out and throw it into the dryer for about 40 to 45 minutes on the highest heat setting. After this your design will hold up to laundering.

If you use a paint that does not require heat setting then you should still set the design. A great way to do this with paints that do not require heat setting is to place the t-shirt by itself into a sink full of cold water that has salt mixed into it. The cold water and salt will help to keep the shirt when it is laundered from fading or bleeding.
Placing airbrush art onto t-shirts can be fun and exciting. But you are not limited to t-shirts. Get creative and airbrush designs onto cotton underwear for you significant other. Airbrush socks for your family. The possibilities with clothing and airbrush art are limitless.

One way to make your own custom T-shirt is by airbrushing them. Learn how to make and use airbrush stencils in this free hobby video series.

Let your item air dry. If you are concerned about wrinkling, you can tumble dry your airbrushed item on delicate (low).

If your garment needs pressed you should turn it inside out and use brown paper from a grocery bag or another kind of paper that won't leave a stain to cover the design. Even then, it is best to put your iron on low. (Don't use wax paper.)

  1. определенные географические регионы, такие как Иран, Крым, Куба, Северная Корея, Сирия, Россия, Беларусь, Донецкая Народная Республика («ДНР»), Луганская Народная Республика («ЛНР»), а также любые физические или юридические лица, ведущие деятельность или находящиеся на этих территориях;
  2. физические или юридические лица, состоящие в санкционных списках, таких как Список лиц особых категорий и запрещенных лиц (SDN) или Список иностранных лиц, уклоняющихся от санкций (FSE) организации OFAC;

On the left are Eva and her big brother Luka. Luka knew what he wanted: a red sports car and his name airbrushed. Eva came back after she had been to The Pink Pamper Parlour, a kids favourite here on Greenwich Market. She decided she wanted a butterfly to match her beautiful face painting!

Niklas was from Germany. He’s into skateboarding. I airbrushed a skateboard on his shirt for him. LOL, I just noticed that the board looks a bit banana-ish on this picture but that’s just the angle of the shirt, don’t worry 🙂

You don’t always have to get a shirt for yourself. Sometimes it can be a friend or a brother or sister. Nikki on the left came with her mom. They asked me to airbrush a t-shirt for her friend for a bit of fun.

Dewi on the right is from Holland, same as me! She came to the market with her mom as well. They came to London for the Olympics. She loves horses and she had been to the Equestrian Event. She had a great time and Holland did very well with a Silver Medal. They wanted to get a souvenir for Dewi’s sister who had stayed at home. I airbrushed an I Love London Olympic T shirt for them.

It's safe to say that the biggest trend of 2016 thus far is merch — or as Virgil Abloh appropriately named it, merchwear™ — but coming in a close second is customization. Sure, it's nothing new, but it's taken an entirely different turn this year. We've seen a particular spike in popularity surrounding pieces of the DIY variety: There's Kanye West's painted denim "Pablo" jackets; tastemakers like Abloh, Heron Preston, and Tyler, the Creator have taken to drawing on their sneakers; and ASAP Rocky, ASAP Ferg, Travis Scott, and Skepta have all recently worn items that look like they, themselves, took a sharpie to them. Plus, established fashion brands have made a point to let customers make pieces their own, from Gucci’s DIY options to monogrammed leather goods at Madewell to Opening Ceremony's in-store embroidery station. But it seems the next wave in the all-custom-everything trend has arrived to kick off fashion month, and it’s a real throwback: airbrushed T-shirts.

Following his Yeezy Season 3 presentation at Madison Square Garden in February, Kanye West appeared with the entire Kardashian-Jenner squad (which was draped in Balmain) wearing an airbrushed tribute T-shirt with the face of his late mother, Donda West, on the front and his wife’s late father, Robert Kardashian, Sr., on the back. It was only available for purchase that day at MSG, despite the countless merch pop-ups that followed both domestically and internationally. He would go on to wear it during his Saturday Night Live performance beneath a Balmain bomber and periodically since then. Kylie Jenner would make a few appearances in the T-shirt as well.

Months later, in August, YG — who is also riding the merch wave — shared a preview of an airbrushed T-shirt reading “Baby Daddy” and “2004,” complete with a throwback photo of the rapper. Sadly, they are not available yet. Full-time rapper and part-time painter ASAP Ferg, who actually went into fashion before Rocky pushed him to rap, also posted multiple Instagrams wearing a full airbrushed, long-sleeve crewneck with his name down both arms and the most lit Mickey Mouse there ever was on the chest.

Most recently, at Alexander Wang’s NYFW party with Adidas on Saturday evening, models who walked the show wore custom airbrushed T-shirts emblazoned with phrases like “Wang Squad,” “Wang Show Shit,” and “Shit Show” — gifts from Wang especially for them. The designer commissioned Noel (yes, single name) of the New York-based company Art Of Your Mind for the tees, which earned just as much (if not more) attention at the party as the limited-edition Adidas merch up for sale.

Luckily, for all Wang Squad hopefuls, the artist will host a pop-up at Wang’s Grand Street location from Friday through Sunday to customize any T-shirt or denim purchased, as Pier 94 restrictions kept Wang from offering custom designs during #WANGFEST. When asked how they fit into Wang’s spring 2017 equation, Noel said: "That's the thing about it. It’s just low-brow art. The only people who were really buying it were people that wanted that; who it is popular with is what changes." He also notes that, in the beginning of his career, he worked with underground subcultures — "car cultures, gang-related material" — which is why he doesn’t look at it as a trend. He’s made a living off of airbrushing for nearly 15 years, and when asked why he thought the fashion crowd was regaining interest in the art, he explained, "they're interested more in the 'trashy' aspect of it. There's this nostalgia of going to the boardwalk or state fair or getting the party favor, something they took away from that moment and seeing someone finish from point A to point B right in front of your eyes." As far as parties go, #WANGFEST — with its free-flowing Slurpees, McDonald's pop-up and fully stocked 7-11 with unlimited junk food — is certainly one from which you’d want a memento.

In a time when everything is knocked off by fast fashion giants, individualism and Instagram (let’s keep it one hundred here) will likely continue to fuel the customization trend. Even West’s tour merch is custom to each show, event and city it’s being sold at. Custom pieces feed the desire of exclusivity, and there’s nothing everyone wants more than something no one else has. Airbrushed T-shirts are hand-painted, making every single one an original. The nostalgia — paired with the low-brow nature and the fact you can request any insignia you want — could bring this back in a big way, especially amongst the fashion crowd. We’re calling it now.
