In essence, a countertop air fryer and a convection oven work similarly, just in different sizes. Both have fans that circulate heat in either a countertop air fryer or oven cavity to achieve crispy, air fried food. Because countertop air fryer compartments are typically significantly smaller than convection ovens, they may have quicker cooking times. However, convection ovens also have more capacity than air fryers, so you should be able to fit more food in the oven as opposed to the two servings that some air fryers cap out at.
Can I use my convection oven as an air fryer?
You can air fry in your convection oven and still achieve great results as with a countertop air fryer. In fact, using your convection oven can actually be more convenient, since you have more cooking room to work with. An air fryer is essentially a mini convection oven, so air frying vegetables is a lot like roasting them, albeit faster and with guaranteed crispy results. Aside from using a different appliance, roasting vegetables and air frying vegetables are nearly the same.
Step #1: Cut into bite-sized pieces
Vegetables, especially denser veggies like potatoes and winter squash, will cook much more quickly when they're chopped into smaller, uniform pieces. It also creates more surface area, which provides more opportunities for a nice crisp. Air fryers are notoriously small, so chopping your vegetables also helps you fit more pieces into the cooking drawer. (Larger pieces are less forgiving.)
Step #2: Add oils and seasoning
Before you stick your veggies into the chamber, toss them with oil, salt, pepper, and any other seasonings you want in a large bowl. Just cut back on the amount of oil you'd normally use. You don't need as much as standard roasting requires.
This is also the time to dredge and coat anything that you're intending to bread. Wet batters won't cook in an air fryer, so you'll need to coat any vegetables you dip in flour and egg wash.
Step #3: Arrange
Lay your vegetables out as flat as possible to streamline cooking time. If you haven't already preheated your air fryer, do it now.

How to Air Fryer Vegetables That Cook at Different Times
If you have vegetables that are finished cooking before others in your air fryer, you can remove them when they're done. Or better yet, next time, make sure you save space on the tray or drawer, and add those faster-cooking veggies a few minutes later. This way, all the food comes out hot and crispy at the same time.

Use the Right Cookware
A perforated pan (sometimes called a perforated crisper tray) allows air to circulate under and around your food for even crisping. If you don't have one, you can use an oven-safe cooling rack. Line the bottom of your oven with aluminum foil or put a baking sheet under the rack below to catch any drips or crumbs.
Spread Out the Food
If you overload your pan to the point where food is piled up or touching, the exteriors won't brown, and it will steam instead of baking or air-frying. So instead, spread it in an even layer with plenty of room between each piece for air to circulate.
Cut Your Food Wisely
There's a reason why french fries are in long sticks — it's because this shape maximizes their surface, providing plenty of exterior for browning. Cut foods into long sticks or small, bite-sized pieces. For example, if you are cooking something like tofu, try tearing it into pieces instead of slicing. The craggy shape will encourage the jagged edges to get crisp and brown.
Prepare Food Properly
The drier your food is before it goes into the oven, the better. Spraying it lightly with cooking spray or tossing it with a neutral oil (like vegetable or grapeseed oil) will help encourage browning and crisping, giving a hint of that deep-fried taste we love.
Be Sure to Flip
Air fryer recipes usually recommend flipping the food halfway through cooking. Know How to Adjust a Recipe
Air fryers cook hotter and faster than a conventional oven, so be aware that your recipe might take a few minutes longer. Start checking it for doneness at the time indicated in the recipe, and if it doesn't look browned enough, check every three minutes until it's golden brown and delicious.
In terms of temperature, air fryer recipes usually recommend a temperature of 20 to 25 degrees lower than what you would use if cooking with a conventional oven. The same holds true for convection ovens, so you can likely use the same temperature setting designated in an air fryer recipe.

Many electric ovens have a convection setting, which simply blows a fan into the oven, creating that circulation of air that helps get everything super crisp. It’s built in and it’s big enough to accommodate plenty of food for you and your family.
Try it for things you want to fry—like potatoes and General Tso’s chicken, but don’t be afraid to put your convection setting to the test with other things that are extra delicious when crispy. Think roasted broccoli (we’re all in it for the crispy bits), roasted sweet potatoes, or even switch on the convection setting to get a little extra browning on you baked goods, like pies and cookies. Air fryer recipes are easy to convert to your oven—simply preheat to the listed temperature, place your food on a baking sheet, and turn on your convection setting. Oven temperatures often vary slightly from the listed temperature, so keep an eye on your goodies to make sure they’re cooking at the correct rate.
If you don’t have a convection setting on your oven, you still don’t go out and buy an air fryer. If you’re desperate for that extra-crunchy effect, we prefer a toaster oven with a convection setting, which is more multipurpose (and will cook more food) than most air fryers. When you’re not convection-ing your way to crunchy happiness, use it to keep sides warm or even to cook a meal for just yourself—toaster ovens heat up faster and use less energy than traditional ovens, so they’re a great option for a smaller household.

Prep the parsnips– Wash your parsnips and peel them like you would a carrot. Cut the top and ends off the parsnips. Next cut the parsnips into strips.
Season the parsnips– Take your sliced parsnips and them to a mixing bowl and drizzle your olive oil over the top and sprinkle the seasonings over the parsnips. Toss this all to coat the parsnips.
Cook the parsnips-Place parsnips in a single layer in the air fryer and cook at 390 degrees F for 10 minutes or until tender and golden.

Air fry the chicken- Place the chicken in your air fryer with the breast side down. Air fryer for 30 minutes at 360 degrees F. Carefully flip the chicken over and continue cooking until the internal temp of the chicken breast reaches 165 degrees F. This should take another 30 minutes.

You may have heard about air fryers and marveled at manufacturers' claims that they produce crispy foods with less fat than deep-frying and faster than a conventional oven. Is such a thing possible? We take a look at how the trendy appliance works to help you figure out if they're worth the money (and space on your already-packed countertop).
How Does an Air Fryer Work?
First of all, air fryers don’t actually fry. Instead, the food goes into a perforated basket and the machine cooks the food by blowing hot air around it. The force of the air produces a convection effect that cooks and browns the exterior of the food in the basket. As long as the temperature of the air reaches more than around 320 F, breaded foods like frozen chicken tenders or unbreaded starchy items like french fries or tater tots, will in fact turn brown.
What Can You Cook in an Air Fryer?
One drawback to the air fryer is that you can't cook foods dipped in liquid batter, such as onion rings or fried chicken. The batter will simply drip through the holes in the basket and make a big mess, nor can you cook doughy foods like doughnuts or beignets. So you're limited to breaded or dry-seasoned items.
You're also limited in terms of portion sizes, but we'll get into that a bit later. Towards the end of this article we'll also discuss one particular task that air fryers do exceptionally well. But first, let's examine the purported health benefits of air fryers.
Are Air Fryers More Healthy?
One of the main selling points of air fryers is that foods cooked in them are healthier than foods cooked in a deep-fryer, because an air fryer uses less oil.
So let’s look at that. For starters, we know that all cooking oils are pretty healthy. As long as you’re not frying your foods in vegetable shortening or lard, there’s nothing particularly unhealthy about the oil that goes in a deep-fryer.
Of course, oil has calories and while calories themselves are not unhealthy, if you're looking to cut calories, using less oil might be a good idea. Right?
Well, that depends. When cooked at the proper temperature (between 350 and 375 F), deep-fried foods actually absorb very little oil. In fact, a comparative study found that french fries cooked in oil had between 14 and 40 more calories per 4-ounce serving than baked fries, depending on the type of oil that was used and whether or not the fries had a seasoned coating. For reference, 40 calories is about half a banana.
In other words, the amount of added calories from deep-frying is negligible. French fries are just a high-calorie food, whether they're cooked in oil or not.
Not only that, but the instructions for the air fryer call for tossing the uncooked fries in 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons of oil before cooking. That's 120 to 180 calories worth of extra oil. Even divided into two servings, which is a typical batch for an air fryer, there's still just as much oil on your air fryer french fries as there are in your conventional deep-fryer french fries.
In any case, no one can plausibly claim that french fries are health food, no matter how they're cooked. So in a sense, touting the health benefits of an appliance designed to cook french fries (or chicken wings or tater tots) might not be all that meaningful.
Do Air Fryers Make Tasty Food?
What’s more meaningful is whether the food cooked in an air fryer tastes good. The answer? It depends. If the food that goes in is tasty, it’ll be tasty. But again, the issue with foods like french fries, chicken wings, and tater tots is never that they don’t taste good enough.
The issue with those foods, to the extent there is an issue, has more to do with health, as well as convenience. Deep-frying might be the best way to cook conventional fried foods, but mucking about with oil isn't all that convenient.
Are Air Fryers Convenient?
So, let's look at the convenience. One issue with air fryers is their capacity. Because they work via the principle of convection, there has to be adequate space between the individual items for the hot air to flow evenly around them. Therefore, to get nicely browned food, you won't be able to fill up the basket. And that means cooking small batches at a time.
That's not necessarily a problem, unless you need to feed more than two people at a time. Also, depending on the food, cooking time can approach 30 minutes per batch (with frequent shaking of the basket to ensure even cooking), so hopefully those two people aren't super hungry (or at least have something else to snack on while they wait).
One task that air fryers seem to be well-suited for is reheating previously fried foods. Unlike the oven or the microwave, which will turn crispy things soggy, the hot, convection effect of an air fryer is just the thing to reheat crispy foods so that they stay crispy. Is that reason enough to own one? That's up to you. Even if its actual cooking capabilities might not amaze you, it's reassuring to know that there is at least one thing that an air fryer does well.

You definitely can, but you’ll have two vastly different green bean recipes on your hands. These fresh green beans are tender crisp and nicely roasted. Canned green beans should be drained well and cooked until just heated through, about 4-5 minutes. They’ll be warmed through, but still retain that soft cooked texture.

It’s hard to overstate the health benefits of eggs. They’re high in protein (with about 6 grams per egg) and contain all nine essential amino acids, as well as various vitamins and minerals (like B12, calcium, zinc and more).
Plus, “the yolk contains choline, which helps with brain function. Eggs also have the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, which are important for eye health,” says Ilyse Schapiro MS, RD, CDN . However, cooking technique matters — especially when dining out.

“It’s important to be aware that restaurants often prepare eggs with extra oils, butter, and salt, and could be using four or five eggs to make an omelet, which will turn your healthy dish into a high-calorie one,” says Schapiro.
But don’t worry — you can easily cut down on the oil and butter needed for great eggs when you cook them in the air fryer. While hard- or soft-boiled eggs are the easiest choice, you can fry or scramble eggs with a little bit of prep work.
“Other egg preparations will require either a small pan that fits into your air fryer or enough aluminum foil that you can create high edges in the basket, so they don't pour over into your air fryer,” says Kelly Jones, MS, RD, CSSD, LDN .
To maximize the benefits of eggs, remember that cholesterol in the yolk should be moderated for heart health. “I recommend clients to eat one to two whole eggs per meal, and they can add as many egg whites as they desire,” says Schapiro.
Now that you know how many eggs you should eat (and why!), check out the following methods for making delicious eggs in the air fryer.
“Put your pan or foil into the fryer for one minute at 300 before spraying with cooking spray or coating with a small amount of butter, letting it sit in the air fryer while you scramble your eggs,” says Jones. Add the eggs to the pan and cook for six to seven minutes, stirring twice during that time.
For extra-fluffy scrambled eggs, Schapiro recommends using two to three eggs with a pinch of salt and pepper and a splash of skim milk.
You can use the same method to make an omelet instead of scrambled. Schapiro recommends one to two whole eggs and egg whites for the rest, or an egg-white only omelet. “For an egg white omelet, add veggies like spinach, kale, tomatoes, peppers and a pinch of goat cheese or part-skim mozzarella,” says Schapiro. Have some fun with protein and toppings—avocado, chicken, broccoli, or feta all make great additions.
After coating the basket with cooking spray, preheat the air fryer to 275 degrees F for two minutes. Add the eggs to the basket, leaving space between each one. For soft boiled eggs, cook for nine to 11 minutes. For hard boiled eggs, cook for about 14 to 15 minutes. Either way, make sure to have a bowl filled with ice water ready to go when the eggs are done.
Once the eggs are cooked, place the eggs into the ice bath for around five minutes, which will make them easier to peel. “These make a great on-the-go breakfast or snack, so make extra and save for use later in the week,” says Schapiro.
Preheat the air fryer to 300 degrees for about two minutes. Crack two to three eggs and pour the batter into an oiled air fryer pan or aluminum foil in the basket, then cook the eggs for about five to 10 minutes. Pay attention to the time frame, as it’ll differ depending on how runny you like your eggs.
To make fried eggs fried over-hard, “prepare the pan or aluminum foil the same way as you would with scrambled eggs but set your air fryer to 350 F. Crack two to three eggs and let them cook for about six to seven minutes,” says Jones. And for over-easy, Jones suggests preparing your pan the same way but setting the air fryer to 320 F and letting the eggs cook for about four to five minutes, instead.
Any quick cooking veggie will fall into the Tender Vegetable category. These are great for busy weeknights when you need to get a vegetable on the table! It includes veggies like:
- Crucifers (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts)

Prep your veggies by chopping them to the size you want, optionally drizzling with oil (this will make them a bit more roasted tasting in the end). Add to your air fryer in as flat of a layer as possible and cook for 10 to 15 minutes, shaking the air fryer pan once or twice during cooking to promote even cooking.
How to Air Fry Firm Vegetables
When I think of roasted veggies, the firm vegetables usually come to mind. These guys take a bit longer to cook, but oh is it worth it! Firm vegetables include:
- Root Vegetables (carrots, beets, potato, parsnip)
- Winter Squash (butternut, acorn, pumpkin)
To cook firm vegetables in an air fryer, preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees F (190 C). Prep your veggies by chopping them to the size you want (remember: smaller pieces cook faster!) Optionally drizzle with oil and add to your air fryer in as flat of a layer as possible. Cook for 20 to 30 minutes, shaking the air fryer pan a few times during cooking to promote even cooking.
How to Air Fry Frozen Vegetables
You can even use your air fryer to cook frozen vegetables! Figure out which category your veggie falls under (tender or firm, see notes above), then just add a few minutes to the cooking time to account for the veggies having to thaw during the cooking process. It’s crucial when cooking frozen vegetables in your air fryer to give them space! Be sure there is some room between your veggies to ensure water can evaporate and they can become perfectly roasted.

Using Your Convection Oven as an Air Fryer
If you have a convection oven without an air fry mode or option, you can still enjoy similar results to an air fryer by making a few slight adjustments.
These tips can help you get golden and crispy results right in your convection oven.
Step 1: Prep your food for air frying
Depending on what ingredients you want to air fry, you’ll have to prep everything in a way that can ensure a golden, crispy exterior. Veggies and potatoes tend to work better when sliced into bite-sized pieces. You can cut them into cubes, spears or medallions and then lightly coat them in oil to achieve browning.
If working with proteins like meat or fish, pat dry their surface so that it isn’t too wet and then coat it with a bit of oil or cooking spray as this will help crisp up the skin.
If cooking something with breading, air frying delivers better results with a drier exterior (consider adding toppings like panko, shredded cheese or breadcrumbs), so it’s recommended to avoid a wet batter.
Step 2: Use proper air frying cookware
A perforated basket designed for air frying helps make countertop air fryers more efficient at crisping up food.
Use a perforated tray or basket to achieve similar crispiness, as you would with an air fryer.
Either of these will allow the hot air to circulate over the entire surface of the food. If you don’t have either a perforated tray or basket, try using a dark or nonstick tray with low sides or an oven-safe cooling rack.
If using a perforated tray or basket, place a cookie sheet covered with aluminum foil or parchment paper on the lower rack to catch any drippings.

Step 3: Give your food space to cook
Always avoid overcrowding to ensure that hot air can cook and crisp your food in an even and thorough manner. The hot air that a convection fan circulates around the oven cavity needs to be able to reach the entire surface of your food to create a golden crusty exterior. Overcrowding not only prevents crisping but may also result in a soggy exterior.
Step 4: Consider air frying temperatures and times
Most convection ovens don’t cook nearly as fast as countertop air fryers. This means that you may have to adjust the cooking times.
Countertop air fryers often require higher temperatures, which you’ll have to account for when finding exact cooking times. If you’re using a recipe that only lists the time for a conventional oven, you should consult your oven manufacturer’s instructions to learn the right cook times and temperatures. If you can’t find your instruction manual, then start by using the times on the package or in the recipe, and monitor your food while it cooks.
Step 5: Flip food halfway through the cooking process
Like you would with a countertop air fryer, you should flip or shake your food to improve air distribution to food surfaces. You should only flip food if necessary, though, as doing so could result in heat loss in the oven.
Spray a little cooking spray or rub a bit of extra oil to promote crisping.
Go ahead and enjoy making your favourite air-fried recipes right in your convection oven. These tips should help you create deliciously crispy foods that are healthier than fried alternatives.
So let's get one thing out of the way: when you're cooking with an air fryer, you're not actually frying anything. Instead, these devices are essentially countertop convection ovens that cook food with electric heat that's circulated by high-powered fans. It's the air, created by the machine's fan, that keeps the surface of the food being cooked dry, resulting in an extra-crispy exterior and a fluffy (think french fries) or moist (chicken thighs) interior that's reminiscent of the results of deep-frying.
But air fryers are for more than just cooking your favorite fried foods in a slightly healthier fashion. In fact, anything that you would roast in a conventional oven can also be cooked in an air fryer, from Thanksgiving turkey (providing it fits) to a full weeknight fish dinner. Technically you could also bake in the air fryer—some models even come with baking pans—but converting baked recipes is more of a trial-and-error game than converting roasted or fried recipes, so tread lightly when trying it.
The functionality of your air fryer will vary slightly from model to model. (We like the Philips TurboStar Digital AirFryer, available for $249.99 at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.) The majority of these devices, like the TurboStar, are boxy in shape, with a drawer that pulls out. Inside the drawer is a removable mesh or perforated metal basket. To use this type of model, you toss your ingredients with a few tablespoons of oil and place them directly into the basket before placing in the pre-heated air fryer. As the food cooks, grease will drip out of the basket into the drawer's receptacle below.
The other common air fryer model looks more like a toaster oven. The Breville Smart Oven Air, available for $399.99 at Bed, Bath, and Beyond, even has specified settings for toasting, roasting, and more, in addition to the air fryer setting. For these models, the functionality, too, is much like a toaster oven, except that when air-frying, you place the food on a removable mesh rack that comes with the air fryer.
One thing to note: when air-frying, make sure to only use pans and racks that are specifically made for your air fryer model. These pans are designed to fit perfectly into the air fryer and allow that hot air to circulate effectively.
Here are a few more tips for getting the most out of your air fryer:
1. Adjust the Cooking Temperature
When converting a recipe with a suggested temperature for deep-frying or cooking in a traditional oven, lower the air fryer's temperature by 25°F to achieve similar results. So if a recipe calls for deep-frying chicken in oil heated to 350°F, air fry at 325°F. The same rule applies for converting roasting recipes. This adjustment is needed because the circulating air makes the heat of the cooking environment more consistent, and thus more intense than traditional cooking methods. Remember to pre-heat your air fryer to temperature—it usually takes less than 5 minutes—before filling the basket, just as you would with any other cooking method.
2. Toss Ingredients With Oil, Sparingly
In general, you should toss food with one to two tablespoons of oil (whichever kind you like: olive, coconut, canola). Foods that are naturally fattier, like meatballs, needn't be tossed in any additional oil. For foods that have been battered or dredged in flour, we recommend spraying the air fryer basket or rack first with cooking spray, laying your battered or dredged food in the basket or rack in a single layer, and then giving the food a light spritz of cooking spray just to coat the top. That little bit of oil is essential for getting foods to turn golden-brown, crisp, and appealing.
The Frozen Foods Exception: Frozen, par-cooked foods, such as fish sticks and chicken strips, can usually be air-fried without any additional oil, but giving them—and the fryer basket—a quick spritz with cooking spray certainly wouldn't hurt.

3. Fill the Air Fryer Basket or Rack
Battered and floured foods should be placed in one layer in an air fryer basket or rack. Some models offer racks that allow for two layers—if yours does, feel free to double up. For things like French fries or "roasted" vegetables, you can load the air fryer basket to the top; however, a fuller basket will require a longer cooking time and will result in food that's not quite as crisp as a basket with a smaller amount of food. It's also a good idea to give full baskets a shake every 3 to 5 minutes to make sure food is cooking evenly—many models will pause the timer when you open the drawer, expressly for this purpose.
4. Check for Doneness Early
Again, because the circulating air helps the air-fryer cooking environment maintain a more consistent temperature than other cooking methods, foods tend to cook faster in an air fryer than they do when being deep-fried or cooked in a conventional oven. That means if you're converting a recipe you already know and love to one cooked in an air fryer, you'll want to check the food about two-thirds of the way through the suggested cooking time to test doneness. Those fish sticks say they'll be done in 15 minutes? Check them at 10 minutes.
5. Make French Fries as Often as Possible
We know why you're really thinking about buying that air fryer, so here it is: yup, frozen French fries can be put right into the air fryer, no oil necessary, and cooked at 350°F for about 15 minutes. Be sure to give them a shake or a toss once or twice during cooking. Fresh-cut fries should first be soaked in hot water for at least 10 minutes (30 minutes is better) to remove excess starch. After soaking, drain and dry fries with a kitchen towel, toss in 1 to 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, then air fry at 350°F for about 20 minutes, again shaking once or twice during cooking. And in either case, don't forget to salt them when they're finished cooking.

Total Time: 25 minutes
- 2lbs ribs
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 2 tsp ground black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- Salt to taste
- Barbecue sauce
- Wash and rinse the ribs. Then, pat them dry using a paper towel.
- In a small bowl, add paprika, garlic powder, salt, and ground pepper and mix. Rub the ribs with the seasonings mixture.
- Preheat your air fryer to 380 degrees F for 3 minutes. Once preheated, spray nonstick cooking spray on the frying basket.

SAN ANTONIO – Sales of air fryers are hot. People love the idea of crispy “fried” food that’s supposed to be a bit healthier because very little oil is used. But what if you don’t have an air fryer? Consumer Reports says chances are you can still air fry at home without spending money or cluttering up your countertop with a new appliance.
So what’s the deal with air fryers? These popular countertop cookers turn out chicken wings, french fries, shrimp, and other traditionally fried foods without using a lot of oil. You can spend $50 to over $300 for one. The good news is you don’t have to! Consumer Reports says air-frying isn’t magic.
An air fryer is a mini convection oven. All you need is a little bit of oil, and then hot air circulates around the food to crisp it. The basket, suspended inside, allows for that air to move around.
But that basket might be too small. After testing 25 air fryers, CR found that the ones with small baskets might require you to make multiple batches of food to feed your hungry family.

There is no need to keep both of them around. If you are looking to clear some space in the kitchen and you have an air fryer, why not get rid of the toaster?
You could make a little money or give it to someone who could use it. Once you try making a few things in the air fryer that you would be normally making the toaster, I think you’ll agree that the toaster isn’t necessary anymore.
How to Use the Air Fryer to Make Toast
In order to get perfectly toasted air fryer bread, you want to preheat the air fryer. Let it warm up for about 3 minutes before you put your bread in there. Then, add the bread to the air fryer.
Let it cook for six minutes at 360 degrees Fahrenheit. This should be good enough for most types of bread, but thicker bread, large slices, and certain types of bread may take longer to toast. I recommend starting at 6 minutes and then adding more time if needed.
Once the air fryer beeps, you can take the bread out, and then it’s ready to eat. As you can see, it’s really simple to make toast in the air fryer, which is why I recommend using this method if you have one.
How Long to Toast Bread in Air Fryer?
The air fryer cooks most foods pretty quickly, and toast cooks really fast because it’s so thin and light. Make sure you’re preheating the air fryer, though, to allow it to warm up enough so that it cooks your toast quickly and evenly.
Most slices of toast should cook in the air fryer in six minutes, if you’re using 360 degrees Fahrenheit of heat. What about if you’re using frozen bread, though? How long to cook frozen bread in air fryer for?
If you’re cooking frozen bread, you want to make sure it cooks in the air fryer evenly, getting both sides well heated and fully thawed.
In order to do that, you’re going to want to preheat your air fryer for three minutes and then heat the toast on one side at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for five minutes.
Then, flip the toast over to cook on the other side for anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes.
Thicker pieces take longer to heat up. If you’re making something like Texas toast, those are pretty thick and will take longer to warm from frozen than thin slices of bread.
How to Make Garlic Bread in Air Fryer
Garlic bread tends to be pretty thick as well. These are also long, large pieces, so the cooking process is a little different.
How to cook frozen garlic bread in air fryer? You’ll want to start by preheating the air fryer and let it warm up for about 3 minutes. Then, you can place the bread in the fryer basket with the cut side facing up. Let that cook at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 5 minutes.
The next step will depend on what kind of garlic bread you’re making. How to cook garlic bread in air fryer when there’s cheese on top? You probably don’t want the cheese to melt onto the air fryer basket and make a mess, so leave that side facing up.
If you’ve cooked it for five minutes on the bottom side but it’s still not thawed, you may be tempted to shift the garlic bread on its side to get it evenly toasted, but that can make the cheese slide off as well once it starts to melt.
Instead, just continue to cook with the cut side facing up for another three or four minutes.
How long it takes will depend on the size of your garlic bread. You may need an additional few minutes after you’ve already allowed it to warm up for the recommended cooking time I’ve given you.

What Is a Dim Sim?
Dim sims are dumpling-like snacks originating from China. The first batch was offered in Australia’s goldmines to miners as a way to supplement their diet with protein.
A type of traditional Chinese fried-wrapped food originating from Australia, Dim Sim was made popular by William Chen Wing Young, the father of well-known Australian chef Liz Chong.
It is a culinary name with origins in Toisanese, the dialect that was most commonly spoken in central Melbourne.
Dim sim dates back to 1928 and the modern recipe was most likely first developed in Melbourne’s Chinatown by entrepreneur William Wing Young for his food processing company, Wing Lee.
The large version of the dish is known as a “South Melbourne dim sum” because it originated in South Melbourne Market.
The dishes have become very popular in Australia as a snack, and “sometimes are referred to as ‘Dimmie’s”.

What is the difference between a dim sim and a dim sum?
Dim Sum refers to a range of small, bite-sized portions that are often served at Yum Cha restaurants. Dim Sum items are usually steamed and can be served on the plate or in the bamboo steamer.
Dim Sim is a Chinese-influenced snack that is often shaped like Siu Mai and consists of meat and vegetable filling wrapped in pastry.
Although they look similar, in fact, they have different ingredients and tastes. Dim sims are usually steamed (or most often fried), and with fillings such as pork and cabbage.

What are dim sims made of?
The dim sim consists of minced meat, cabbage, and seasoning with a wrapper not dissimilar to that of a traditional shumai.
Dim sims are typically rectangular or sometimes a larger circular shape. They can be served deep-fried or steamed and often times dressed in soy sauce.
One alternative way to cook dim sims is to barbecue them, by cutting the meal in half and placing them on a hot barbecue.
Dim sim can be served as a vegetarian-style dish with cabbage, carrot, vermicelli, and mushrooms as the filling.
What are South Melbourne Dim Sims made of?
Cheng’s recipe for dim sims, popular for their size, has barely changed since 1949. They are made of cabbage, beef, pork, lamb and spices are encased in a thick wrapper to create these now-famous dumplings.

- 1 packet wonton wrappers (yellow or white)
- 500g minced pork
- ½ cup shredded cabbage (lightly blanched and squeezed out)
- ½ cup celery (finely chopped)
- 3 spring onion stalks (finely chopped)
- ½ cup water chestnuts (finely chopped)
- 1 tbsp cornflour
- 2 tsps salt
- 2 tsps sugar
- 2 tsps light soy sauce
- ½ tsp sesame oil
- 1/4 tsp white pepper
- Begin by mixing all the ingredients in a large bowl.
- Place one tablespoon of filling in the center of each wonton wrapper and shape into a pot-like shape.
- Add more filling to your ‘petal’ until the top is filled.
- Steam the dim sims over boiling water for 20 minutes, and serve with soy sauce.

Easy Dim Sim Recipe with Air Fryer
- 750 g (1.7 lb) frozen dim sims
- 1 tsp oil
- Preheat the air fryer to 200°C (390°F).
- Add the dim sims into the air fryer basket.
- Pat the dim sims dry with a paper towel and then coat them sparingly with oil.
- Cook in the air fryer for 15 minutes. Rotate halfway through cooking.
- Serve with soy sauce.

To make Dim Sims in an air fryer, thaw the Dim Sums and fry for 5 minutes at 170°C or 8 minutes if frozen before steaming at 170°C. To make Dim Sims in a deep fryer, follow the instructions for deep frying.

Frozen burger patties are a great convenience food. In most cases, they’re pre-made and ready to go! Burgers can be cooked in the air fryer from frozen just as easily. You just need to increase the time and decrease the temperature to make sure they’re cooked evenly and aren’t frozen in the middle while they’re overcooked on the outside. If you prefer to thaw them first, cook them like fresh patties.
To make cheeseburgers , just place a slice of cheese on top of each patty at the last minute. If your air fryer has a tendency to blow the cheese off the patties, cook the patties first, turn the air fryer off, add the cheese, and let it melt for 1 minute. American cheese and cheddar cheese are my favorites, but you can use any cheese you like.
Note on sauces and toppings: For the classic cheeseburger, I recommend my burger sauce , which tastes just like the special sauce from In-N-Out. For pretzel burgers , I recommend my honey mustard sauce . And if you are a burger eater, you know that caramelized onions transform any burger into something special.
How to air fry hamburger buns
I love my burgers with fluffy brioche buns , potato buns, or pretzel buns . The buns don’t take long to turn brown. I usually toast them for 1 minute so they’ll be warm and crispy when they’re done. Since all air fryer models work differently, you need to figure out whether the cut side should be facing up or down for them to be toasted. If you want to make hamburger sliders, then use dinner rolls instead of burger buns.
Storing and reheating
- Fridge: Air-fried hamburgers can be safely stored in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Wrap them tightly in plastic wrap to prevent odors from getting into the other foods in your refrigerator. Reheat them in the air fryer at 350°F (177°C) for 1-2 minutes.
- Freezer: You can also freeze them for up to 4 months by wrapping them in plastic wrap twice and placing them in freezer bags. Reheat in the air fryer at 350°F (177°C) until they are hot, about 10 minutes.
Note: Please note that reheated burgers are not as juicy as freshly cooked ones.
Top tips for success
- Depending on what hamburgers you’re making (thickness, size, ingredients) and what air fryer model you have, you may need to adjust the cooking time and temperature. I can only provide a guide on what works for my air fryer model (Instant Vortex Plus) and my burgers. I suggest cooking a test patty and from there adjusting the time and temperature to suit your needs.
- Make sure the burgers don’t overlap and that they have enough place to cook without touching. This ensures that the heat can circulate and the patties cook through evenly.

How to Deep Fry Candy in an Air Fryer
To make deep fried candy bars in your air fryer or deep fried Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups like we made here, you will need an air fryer, butter flavored cooking spray, chocolate candy (use your favorite!), crescent rolls and powdered sugar.
For best results on frying candy in the air fryer, consider freezing your candy first. Freezing the candy will keep it from melting too much in the air fryer. After your candy is frozen, place one frozen Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup (or a piece of your favorite frozen candy) in the center of an individual crescent roll.
Wrap the crescent roll around a piece of frozen candy and spray lightly with cooking spray. Space out on the tray and place in the air fryer for 10-12 minutes at 320 degrees.

But what if you don’t want another appliance eating up space on your countertop? Or you want to air-fry in larger portions than the typical air fryer will hold? The answer may already be in your kitchen.
More and more range ovens, wall ovens, and toaster ovens that have convection now come with air-fry settings. Convection, which constantly circulates hot air using one or more fans, is the same technology behind countertop air fryers. So we tried out a few to see how well they work. Below are tips for getting the best results from each, plus a closer look at the top appliances from Consumer Reports’ tests that can air-fry.

How to ‘Fry’ Food in an Oven
An air fryer works by rapidly circulating hot air and a small amount of oil to fry foods. The oil and air work in tandem, transferring heat via conduction (the direct contact of the hot oil) and convection (the heavy rotation of hot air). In a wall oven or the oven of a range with convection, the air-fry function works the same way.
In our range lab, we tested the air-fry functions of two ranges from Frigidaire and a wall oven from Café. With the Frigidaire ranges, we purchased and used the optional air-fry basket ($50) for making frozen fries and chicken wings. For the Café wall oven, we simply used an aluminum pan.
Both ranges and the wall oven produce golden, crispy french fries with just a few teaspoons of oil—and in record time. They shave a staggering 20 to 30 minutes off the total cook time compared with using a regular bake setting. That’s largely due to the fact that the oven doesn’t need to preheat on the air-fry setting; the heat ramps up almost immediately.
Our fries weren’t quite as beautiful as when we cooked frozen fries in a countertop air fryer. The small capacity of stand-alone air fryers allows more hot air to circulate around the food, plus they typically have baskets that rotate, allowing for more even browning. But the range and wall ovens are able to hold more than twice as much food as a standard air fryer. For large families, the larger capacity and shorter cooking time can be a real mealtime game changer.
If your convection oven doesn’t have an air-fry setting, you can still get similar results. “Try using the convection roast setting,” says Tara Casaregola, CR’s test engineer in charge of ranges, cooktops, and wall ovens. “Use a dark or nonstick pan in the oven to get better browning than you would from a glass dish or a shiny aluminum pan.” Darker bakeware absorbs more heat in the oven than a shiny, reflective pan. In turn, darker bakeware will radiate more heat onto foods, helping them brown.

What is an air fryer and how does it work?
An air fryer is a kitchen appliance that cooks by circulating hot air around the food. The food is heated by convection which creates a crunchy, crispy exterior requiring minimal fat, making it both convenient and a lower fat method for cooking foods like chips and fried chicken.

Top 5 health benefits of air frying
1. A lower fat method of cooking
Air fryers use significantly less oil than deep fat fryers, and a 2015 study demonstrated that food cooked using an air fryer were as a result substantially lower in fat. An air fryer does this by heating the food in hot air which contains fine oil droplets.

Convection heat, such as that used in an air fryer may preserve certain nutrients during the cooking process, these include vitamin C as well as numerous protective plant compounds, called polyphenols.
