How to advertise locally for free on the internet

How to advertise locally for free on the internet

As a small business, there’s nothing better than free online advertising. In the digital age, there are a variety of platforms to help you spread the word about your business, but you have to start by getting yourself online. Search engines are a common starting point for consumers, and as a business owner, being knowledgeable about free ways to help your business appear more often in local searches will bring you more visibility and business.

Ready to try Yelp Ads?

Put your business in front of more customers.

We’ve compiled a list of seven free online advertising opportunities that any small business can take advantage of. Each of these free online advertising tricks will get you in front of potential customers and help you to be more relevant in local search.

1. Claim and complete your business listings

In addition to ensuring that all of your business information is accurate on your own website, be sure all of your online business listings are claimed and complete. A Yelp Business Page is free to set up and is a great way to spread the word about your business. Not only do many consumers use the Yelp app to search for great local businesses, but the business information that you add to your Yelp Page—such as hours, website, etc.—is typically pushed through to Yelp partners.

You can also sign up for Yelp Ads, which prominently places your business listing throughout the Yelp site. This no-contract, no-commitment advertising campaign allows you to choose your own budget and pause/cancel whenever you like. Many businesses are eligible for a free Yelp Ads credit if they haven’t tried ads before. Just sign in to your Yelp for Business account and click the Yelp Ads tab, or contact a representative to determine your eligibility.

2. Search engine optimization (SEO)

Search engine optimization, or SEO, can sound like a complicated process, but it doesn’t have to be. With knowledge of a few basic tools you can begin to move the needle and increase the virtual presence of your business. This guide to small business SEO is a great place to start.

Once you begin to understand the basics of keywords and search engines, you can apply that SEO knowledge to other sites, like your online listings. Having complete profiles is important, and ensuring that those profiles are rich with keywords and phrases that describe what you do will help to increase your visibility.

3. Get into blogging

Blogging is a great way to spread the word about your business and establish you as an expert in whatever vertical you operate. Consider a few topics that are relevant to your offerings, and produce a few informative articles to show others that you have diverse experience and expertise in your field. If you’re not sure where to start, do a few searches and see what content already exists.

Consider common issues or challenges that your customers are faced with. What insights can you provide to help them in their time of need? Just because you provide knowledge and information online doesn’t mean that you’re going to be giving the secret sauce away to your customers for free, but it establishes you as a credible source at the exact time they need it.

If creating your own blog content seems like an overwhelming task, consider doing a guest post on someone else’s blog. You can search for blogs relevant to your industry, and look up trade publications to see if they accept contributed content. Most magazines, industry publications, and websites look for contributors, so reach out and see if they’d be interested. And remember to always create a backlink that takes people to your work.

4. Email marketing

Email marketing is a great way to promote content, share business-related news, reengage your customers, and build deeper relationships. Your email list is a captive audience, and connecting with them to provide updates and information is a great way to create transactions and even reach out to new, potential customers. Get creative and have some fun with your messaging. Include vibrant images of your business and your goods or services. You can provide offers or deals and encourage that network to spread the word to their family and friends.

Creating frequency with your emails can help keep you top of mind. A scheduled email newsletter is a great way to stay connected with your customers over time and allows you to capture their attention at a specific time with a specific message. This also helps your goods or services stay top of mind between actual customer contact points. Just be aware of overcommunicating; you don’t want to come off as spammy. If your business provides services that most customers take advantage of annually, a monthly newsletter may be too frequent and you should perhaps consider sending every six months. Adjust your cadence based on your customers and the things they need from your business.

5. Develop a social media presence

Social media is free advertising, and it provides an opportunity for you to develop your brand in an engaging way. Having a consistent message of who you are across all of your social platforms helps create connections with consumers looking for the goods or services you provide.

Whether it’s a Facebook business page, an Instagram, or a Snapchat account, you want to visually express who you are as a small business. Include images with engaging and descriptive captions to highlight what you’re showing. Be authentic, and show what’s going on behind the scenes. Video footage is very engaging and will often get increased visibility. What sets you apart from your competitors? How can you show that visually? Having a social media strategy can be valuable in growing your community and increasing new customers.

6. Creative YouTube videos

YouTube has more than two billion active users, and video content is a great way to entertain and engage potential customers. People are much more likely to watch a short video than read a long-form article, and they’re also most likely to share videos. Creating engaging and informative content is a great way to sell your brand and spread awareness for what you do.

Creating YouTube content is similar to blogging in that you’ll want to continue to publish things over time. Consider creating a YouTube channel where you can cover everything from who you are and why you got into business to expert advice for your industry.

7. Partnerships with other businesses

Digital partnerships are a great way to expand your network and spread the word about a good or service you provide. Consider other business owners or brands who would make good collaboration partners—people with strong social media followings, businesses in similar or cross-functional areas, and industry experts who you admire or respect.

Partnerships and collaborations allow small businesses to spread the word about who they are and what they do beyond their immediate and existing customer base. Simply tagging another local business in a social media post, or asking them to join you on a Youtube episode can help increase the number of eyeballs who are seeing what you have to offer.

When you share your event online, the free advertising it provides can lead to explosive ticket sales. Because posting your event on multiple websites increases the chances that someone will see it, that’s. Every post can drive word-of-mouth marketing, more traffic to your ticket sales page, and more ticket sales. It really is that simple.

The point really isn’t why you needs to you post your event on multiple website or blogs, but instead, why wouldn’t you? The advantages to share your event online far outweigh the minimal amount of time it requires to add your event listing to a handful of targeted websites where your potential buyer target market can find it.

Whether you’re organizing a music festival with rock music, a Religious concert, a stage show, or a business conference, there are websites where a lot of people are actively looking for events like yours. Your event needs to be there!

If you go to Google and search for “submit your event” or “post your event,” you’ll get a long list of articles filled with options– many of which are duplicates that you’ll need to sift through. Don’t feel like you have to post your event on every site to move the ticket sales needle.

As soon as you’ve listed your event across several event sharing sites, be sure to watch your Google Analytics reports to see where the visitor traffic to your ticket sales webpage is coming from. A few of the event sharing sites listed below might perform much better than others, which will save you time whenever you need to promote another event in the future. You’ll know which websites to concentrate your efforts on next time.

Having said that, here’s the list of services where you can get free advertising by submitting your event online:

1. Eventful.com

Eventful lists a large range of events as well as syndicates events to other online resources to offer your event even more visibility.

2. Yelp.com

Yelp started as a local business directory, however it’s significantly much more these days. It incorporates an events section for most metropolitan areas in which you can submit your event regardless if it’s a music event, art affair, business conference, non-profit event, or anything else.

3. Eventcrazy.com

Eventcrazy is “America’s search engine for entertaining things to do.” It merely requires a few minutes to post your event to the listing.

4. YourEventFree.com

YourEventFree.com is a website directory of events in which you can easily add your own event. There is a long list of categories to select from.

5. Facebook.com

You can quite easily include an event to your Facebook Page so you can share it and market it to your Facebook Page fans and the greater Facebook community of over 1 billion everyday users.

6. Online forums

Online forums are typically targeted to particular interests, so it makes sense to share your event with target audiences who have without a doubt shown an enthusiasm in your event performers or presenters by participating in related discussion forums. If you’re not in the know of forums that are pertinent to your event, Google a keyword relevant to your event as well as the word “forum” to find a few.

7. Facebook Groups

Are there any Facebook Groups corresponding to your event? It’s a perfect place to share your event, therefore go ahead and begin looking for these if you don’t currently know some. Here’s a terrific write-up that will teach you how to join and find Facebook Groups.

8. LinkedIn Groups

For business-related conferences and events, LinkedIn Groups might be a considerably more effective way to distribute your event than Facebook Groups. Simply just browse for appropriate LinkedIn Groups, join them, and publish your event.

9. Craigslist.com

Craigslist is recognized as the local sales site where people can sell pretty much about anything, however, did you know it likewise provides an event category? Just post your event to the local Craigslist where the event will be held. “Events” is listed under the “Community” section on the local Craigslist page. Your event will show up here when people click on “Events” or on the “Event Calendar” in the sidebar

10. Eventseeker.com

Eventseeker is owned and operated by Cityseeker, which presents information about overnight accommodations, dining establishments, tourist attractions, nightlife, shopping, and scenic tours for a lengthy list of cities in the U.S. Regional events are listed on the Eventseeker site, and anyone can easily add an event, as well.

11. AllConferences.com

AllConferences is a world-wide online conference submission site with over 100,000 conferences, expos, trade shows, seminars, and exhibits listed. Your event doesn’t need to be relating to business to be included here, but it should be targeted to a business-oriented audience. The event could be related to art, medicine, technology, recreation, science, health, and more.

12. Lanyrd.com

Lanyrd is a social conference directory where you can list any professional or hobbyist event targeted at knowledge-sharing. The event should either have at least one speaker or be a professional networking event such as a conference, unconference, workshop, seminar, convention, trade show, and so on.

13. acbj.com

The American City Business Journal publishes business-related websites for a variety of cities across the United States. Each site includes an events section where you can submit your event. Click the following link to view the Orlando Business Journal events page. From your city’s event page, simply click the Add Your Event button to submit your event.

14.. crains.com

City Crain’s Site – Crain’s Communications, Inc. publishes city-specific websites for the business sector, and many of those sites (but not all) include events sections. Just find your city’s site, and submit your event. The following link shows you the local event listings from the Crain’s Detroit Business site.

If you know of any other great websites and directories where events can be posted for free please feel free to mention them in the comments area and we can check those resources and get them added to this list.

Need to drive more business to your door? Use our practical guide to rev up your local web strategy.

The promise of the web has been a global one. It connects companies to telecommuters, outsourcers, far-off countries and customers around the world. But a new trend in the web is bringing it closer to home . . . and business. The “local web” is the way the internet helps connect people with places in their hometowns as well as their business and travel destinations. For local entrepreneurs, it’s about using the web to reach customers and vice versa.

We’re not here to preach the value of having a website. You already know about that. This is a look at how to use your site and the many other internet resources available to help customers find you. It’s not so much about e-commerce as it is about getting people to your door. “What we have now is a complicated world where people use many different sources of information to find local businesses. They’re using the traditional mediums that they’ve always used, but now the internet has become a very powerful–and in many cases, [the] primary–resource for people,” says Greg Sterling, founder of Sterling Market Intelligence, an Oakland, California, consulting and research firm with an emphasis on the local search marketplace.

How to advertise locally for free on the internet

Opportunities to place free ads are available in many places on the Internet. You can place a free ad for anything you need to get the word out about, such as your garage sale, individual items you want to sell, or your business. Some newspapers even allow free ads when you’re selling inexpensive items. Most free ads can be ordered online, even when they will appear in print publications.

Place Your Free Ad

Consider what you are trying to advertise. Some newspapers offer free ads when you are selling certain relatively inexpensive items. Free ads for businesses or more expensive items will be available only on websites.

Find websites or newspapers that offer free advertising. Type “free ads” into your favorite search engine to find possible sites to submit your ad to. Also search for newspapers in your area with free advertising sections if your product qualifies.

Decide which websites or newspapers you want to feature your ad. Note the different features available on various sites for free ads and which features are available only for paid ads.

Sign up for an account if necessary with any sites where you want to place an ad. Many sites require this before you can submit an ad. Check your email and confirm your account if necessary.

Fill out the form for your ad and put it in the correct category. Make it interesting and include information such as the appearance, brand name and price of what you are offering. Be sure to include appropriate contact information such as a phone number or email address.

Preview your ad to be certain that you have included everything you meant to say.

Submit your ad and wait for confirmation. You may need to check your email and click a confirmation link before your ad posts.

Online ads need a good title to get the most attention. This will be seen before the rest of your ad on most sites.

If you are advertising a garage sale or something you only want to sell locally, check your local newspaper’s website for free advertising options. Craigslist is also a good choice for selling locally. Visit their website and find your city.

Warnings

Make sure that your ad qualifies for a free ad. Many sites charge for certain types of ads while others are free. Job listings and real estate are common categories that otherwise free sites may charge a fee to advertise.

What do Open Linkedin Groups Mean for Jobs?

Last night, Linkedin announced that they are rolling out “open” Linkedin groups. Open groups mean.

To advertise an open job position, different job posting methods may be used, including free job postings. An advertised job position provides details about the job, including the company that is advertising the position, what the title of the position is, the roles and responsibilities associated with the position and the qualifications that a successful candidate would need to possess. Getting information about job openings to qualified and talented job seekers is essential in order to attract a robust response to open job positions. However, being able to advertise openings in a cost-effective manner requires resourcefulness in seeking job advertising platforms that are either low-cost or completely free.

There are many websites and other media that allow free job postings. This includes many local and national newspapers that allow job advertisements in classified sections completely free of any charges. Websites are a great place to also receive no service charges for uploading open positions. Popular websites use the attraction of free services to pull in organizations so that their databases of advertised jobs keep growing exponentially. Whether the free service occurs through the Internet or in print media, there are benefits that websites and advertising organizations like newspaper houses acquire when free services are offered. One major benefit from allowing free advertisements is increased client traffic. As a result of the increase in traffic on their websites and more people purchasing newspapers or reading bulletin boards, the hosting organizations are able to get even more people aware of their hosting platforms. The generated traffic can also attract major sponsors and companies that want to advertise their products or services on job websites, newspapers and other job vacancy hosting platforms.
