How to adjust the filter strength on instagram on iphone or ipad

Instagram today released a major update to its popular photo sharing app for smartphones. The latest release, Instagram 6.0, packs in several new photo editing tools including light and dark adjustments, sharpening effects, color adjustments, filter strengths, and more.

When you go to select a filter, you’ll now see a new wrench icon. Tap it and you’ll find a tray of photo editing tools ready for you to explore. You can also now adjust how much of a filter you apply to a photo by double tapping the filter icon.

The update comes just a day after Apple previewed iOS 8 which includes its own photo editing advancements in the native Photos app similar to those found in apps like iPhoto.

While Instagram is pushing forward with improvements focused on making your photos look better, the photo sharing social network is not budging on their app icon which tends to stand out among other app icons using the design language introduced last year with iOS 7. (That remains high on my wish list for Instagram right next to an official iPad version… everyone could use bigger filters!) 😎

Full release notes below:

What’s New in Version 6.0.0

The Instagram you love, now with 10 new photo-editing tools!

* Double-tap on filters to adjust the filter strength * Perfect your composition with Adjust and Vignette * Enrich colors with Warmth and Saturation * Adjust lights and darks with Brightness, Contrast, Highlights and Shadows * Make your photos crisp and clear with Sharpen

Other updates: * It’s now easier to upload and share videos * Improved design and bug fixes

Instagram 6.0 for iPhone is available to download now on the App Store.

Could be a 5 star app

This app has beautiful filters but the app is SO bare bones you have zero ability to actually edit your photo, you’re just slappin’ a coat of paint on top of your pic and hoping for the best. Total fail for an photo app with so much potential to be a go-to for gorgeous, even artsy creations. Instead, you’re left with a small handful of, albeit a great little collection, colorful filters that you can’t adjust or edit in ANY way. I have a couple breathtaking pics from my trip to the Rocky Mtns that would look amazing with a couple of these filters, if only I could adjust the strength of it. I attempted a couple different pics with landscape and people, and not one single filter was useable because it was 100% strength on top of my pics and completely washed out or overpowered the photo itself.

Not to mention how much better it’d be to be able to apply effects to only portions of the photo, apply layered filters, crop, resize — or actually be creative in any way lol. And the icing on the cake is how their is literally no instruction, introduction, info, FAQ, help — zilch. So even if there WERE any of the above features so desperately needed to make this a useable app, good luck trying to figure out how to navigate to or use them lol.

All in all it’s a lovely app visually, but worthless. If they made some pretty basic improvements this would be awesome & definitely one I’d use regularly.

Developer Response ,

We’re always working to improve the app, please take a moment to download and use the newer version of the app.

I’m not sure if I’m just not understanding right, or it’s just the lack of instructions and help.
The depth feature does not seem to be working, there’s zero customization, there are no instructions or tutorials whatsoever, and your photo ends up zoomed in when you choose from your camera roll. It’s just all around confusing if I’m honest.
I’ll hold onto it for any future updates for future review, but as of now I’m highly disappointed

Developer Response ,

Hey, how are doing? The Depth Effect works on devices that has the Portrait Mode in the Camera App (example: iPhone 7 Plus, 8 Plus, X, XR, XS, XS Max, 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max). To use that feature you need to take a photo with the Portrait Mode and open that photo in our app from the Photo Library button in the first screen of our app. When the photo has this feature a little alert written "Depth Effect" will appear, then just Drag & Drop in the different layers. Please consider changing your review after testing the newest version. How was our support? Do you have more questions? Talk to us at our Instagram Page @fadeit_app, Thank You, Fade It Team

Perhaps the simplest way to edit a photo on iOS and iPadOS is to use a filter. The Photos app for iPhone and iPad offers nine filters — including vivid, dramatic, mono, silvertone, and more. You can apply them to your photos in just a few taps, and these can definitely help perk up any picture, so give it a try!

How to use filters in the Photos app for iPhone and iPad

Filters in the Photos app are handy when you want to salvage an image or a photo that didn’t turn out the way you’d hoped, or you want to change the mood and go for a unique effect.

  1. Launch the Photos app from your Home screen.
  2. Tap on the photo you want to filter.

Tap the Edit button at the top right of the screen.

When you’re ready to push your iPhone photo-editing to fun, new level, you should consider a third-party app, which will offer more choices than the native Photos app. Among the more interesting ones available in the App Store are Prisma, Popsicolor, and Olli by Tinrocket. Or you could stick with a more traditional photo editing app too, as these always have their own set filters and effects to enhance photos. Experimentation is key!

How to apply live filters with the Camera app on iPhone and iPad

Did you know that in addition to applying the filters in the editing process, you can also take photos with the filter already applied? These are called “live” photo filters, and you can easily access them from the Camera app. Using live photo filters lets you see how the image will turn out with the filter before you even take the photo! It’s great and convenient if you just want to take the pictures as-is, without having to edit them later.

Inverting colors and implementing grayscale have all been consolidated under the Display & Text Size menu in Accessibility, and Apple has added the ability to activate color filters to help people with even more types of color blindness.

Activating these filters is as easy as flipping a switch, so here we go!

How to invert colors

Inverting colors makes the iPhone or iPad screen easier on the eyes for people that are sensitive to brightness and helps make objects a little easier to see for some people with color blindness and low vision.

Launch Settings from your Home screen.

Tap Accessibility.

Tap the switch next to Smart Invert or Classic Invert. Smart Invert reverses the colors of the display except for images, media, and some apps that use dark colors. Classic Invert inverts all colors.

How to reduce White Point

When you enable Reduce White Point, it dims the brightness of whites and bright colors on the iPhone and iPad screen. It is different than simply dimming your screen. It sort of adds a layer of very transparent fog across the screen so that things just aren’t quite so bright. It is helpful for people that have brightness sensitivity.

  1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Tap Accessibility.

Tap Display & Text Size.

Tap and drag the slider to your preferred setting. You can reduce the White Point from 25% to 100%.

How to enable Color Filters

When enabled, Color Filters can help those with color blindness get the most out of their iPhone or iPad. There are specific filters for specific types of color blindness.

  1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Tap Accessibility.

Tap Display & Text Size.

The way the filter affects your iPhone is shown by the three images at the top of the Color Filters screen. Swipe through the three images to see how the filter will affect the look of your phone.

How to change Color Tint

You can change the color tint of your iPhone or iPad’s entire screen if you have light or color sensitivity. Here’s how:

  1. Launch Settings from your Home screen.
  2. Tap Accessibility.

Blue light emitted by your phone, tablet, or laptop can affect your sleep by tricking your brain into thinking it's daytime when it's not. Here's how to filter out the blue light for a more restful sleep.

How to adjust the filter strength on instagram on iphone or ipad

Your mobile device’s screen normally emits a blue light that’s fine for daytime use but can disrupt your sleep at night. That’s because blue light stimulates your brain and fools it into thinking it’s daytime, potentially keeping you awake if you use your device before bedtime.

There are some studies that have found blue light may not deserve its reputation as a sleep-sucking vampire, but limiting your exposure before bedtime is still worth trying, especially if you have difficulty falling asleep.

Your iPhone, iPad, and Windows 10 devices have a feature called Night Shift for changing the color temperature of the screen. Many Android devices also offer a built-in Blue Light feature, and a variety of third-party utility apps get the job done, too. Here’s how to control the blue light on your device.

iPhone or iPad

On your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Display & Brightness. Tap the Night Shift setting, which alters the screen temperature of your device to a warmer color, filtering out the blue light.

The Night Shift screen offers a few options that can help you control when the screen changes colors, and what colors should be used. Use the slider to make the screen’s coloring warmer or cooler. Warmer settings are best if you want to get a good night’s sleep, but you’ll want to find a balance so the screen is pleasing to view. Play around with this setting until you find the right temperature for you.

You can have Night Shift turn on and off at predetermined times by turning on the Scheduled button, and setting a start time and end time for when the color change should take effect. For example, you can set it to turn on an hour or so before you typically go to sleep, and turn it off when you usually wake up. Turn on Manually Enable Until Tomorrow to temporarily activate the blue light filter now until the start of the next day.

Night Shift can also be set specifically for Sunset to Sunrise, but if you don’t see that option, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services, and turn on the Setting Time Zone option. Return to the Night Shift settings screen and tap the scheduled times. You’ll now see the option for Sunset to Sunrise.

You can also turn on Night Shift mode from the Control Center on your iPhone or iPad. Depending on the device you own, open Control Center by swiping your finger up from the bottom of the screen or down from the top-right corner. Press down on the Brightness control, then tap the Night Shift button to turn it on.

Android Device

Most Android devices should have built-in blue light filters that can be enabled or disabled from the Settings screen. However, the feature’s availability and utility depends on your specific device and version of Android. You should be able to find the filter under Settings > Display. Look for an option for Night Light or Blue Light filter and turn it on.

In most cases there should be a way to schedule the feature and adjust the color temperature to your liking. Scheduling when it should turn on and off will be under the Schedule option, while an Intensity or Opacity option will let you change the color temperature.

Blue Light Filter Apps

If your Android device doesn’t have a built-in Blue Light feature or doesn’t let you schedule the times or adjust the temperature, try one of several third-party apps that filter out blue light.

Blue Light Filter

With Blue Light Filter, you can easily adjust the color temperature by choosing from among several preset options. The app even provides tips on the best temperature to make sure you fall asleep as you would normally. You can also tweak the intensity and the brightness of the filter.

sFilter

With sFilter, manually turn on a blue light filter or schedule it to turn on and off at specific times of the day or night. You can change the color, opacity, and brightness of the filter. You can even create a shortcut icon or widget, so you don’t have to open the app to enable the filter.
