How to adjust the contrast of a photo using the iphone photos app

In the latest Apple iPhone 13 series smartphones, the company has introduced several new features to meet the needs of photography and one of them is the photographic styles for photos and the cinematic mode for capturing video footage.

Photographic styles consist of subtle filter-like adjustments that can be activated before taking pictures. This allows you to bring a stylistic effect that will not affect the skin tone of the subjects. There are four options: Vibrant, Rich Contrast, Warm and Cool.

In this guide, we will show you a step-by-step process to enable you to easily activate Photography Styles mode on your iPhone 13 series smartphone.

How to Use Photography Styles Mode on iPhone 13

Step 1: Open the Camera app on your iPhone 13.

2nd step: You will need to select the photographic styles, ensure that you have selected the photo mode and then swipe up from the bottom of the viewfinder and press the “ Photographic styles “ icon that looks like three cards lined up.

Step 3: Now cycle through the four presets (in addition to the Standard option) and you can preview each one applied to the current scene in the viewfinder.

Step 4: You can also use the optional Tone and Warmth sliders under the viewfinder to adjust the appearance to your preference.

Step 5: When you’re ready to take the shot, just press the shutter button.

By default, the selected photographic style will remain active the next time you launch the Camera app until you select a different one or revert to the standard style. You can also change the default active photographic style from the Settings app.

If you have one of the best new iPhones, the iPhone 13, then you have access to a new feature in the Camera app called Photographic Styles. Unfortunately, this feature is exclusive to the iPhone 13 lineup and isn’t available on previous-generation devices. They’re like iPhone filters, but better. Here’s how to set a Photographic Style on your iPhone 13.

What are Photographic Styles?

Photographic Styles are basically like iPhone photo filters, but you can adjust the tone and warmth of each style to suit your preferences and tastes. These stylistic effects won’t affect the skin tones of people in your photos. There are four preset Photographic Styles: Rich Contrast, Vibrant, Warm, and Cool.

Vibrant will get your image in bright and vivid colors that still look natural and not overdone. Rich Contrast gives you a slightly more dramatic look with darker shadows that will increase color and contrast. Warm adds a golden undertone to the photo, and Cool has slightly more blue undertones.

While each Photographic Style has a default Tone and Warmth setting, you can adjust these as you see fit. Once you make your changes, it stays that way until you make changes again. With Photographic Styles, you can bring out some aspects of a photo as you take them, rather than waiting until the post-processing stage.

Photographic Styles can also be used with the front-facing True Depth camera. However, it’s crucial to remember that Photographic Styles cannot be removed from a photo once it’s shot, so they are technically destructive. But you also cannot apply a Photographic Style to existing photos.

How to use a Photographic Style in the Camera app on iPhone 13

Here’s what you need to do to use Photographic Styles on your iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, or iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Launch the Camera app on your iPhone 13.

Make sure you are on the regular Photo mode, then swipe up from the bottom of the viewfinder, or tap the arrow button at the top of the screen to bring up additional controls.

How to change the active Photographic Style through the Settings app

Another way to change the default Photographic Style is through the Settings app on your iPhone 13.

  1. Launch Settings on your iPhone 13.
  2. Scroll down and tap Camera.

Under Photo Capture, tap Photographic Styles.

Questions?

As you can see, Photographic Styles is similar to photo filters, but they use Apple’s computational photography magic to make your photos turn out looking their best. It’s important to note that you cannot remove a Photographic Style once it is applied, and they cannot be added to existing photos in your Photo Library, unfortunately.

People are getting creative on social media when it comes to photo editing trends – you can edit your photos to create a sun kissed portrait photo look or use panoramic mode to capture better vertical photos. You can edit your photos on an iPhone using the Photos App, Kapwing, or another application in the App Store. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through the best practices for taking and editing photos on your iPhone using the Photos App and Kapwing!

  1. Framing your photo
  2. Edit your photo in the Photos App
  3. Edit & Export your photo in Kapwing

1) Framing your photo

It’s not easy editing a photo that may already be ruined from the start. As a rule of thumb, photographers will follow the “rule of thirds” which is a process of composing an image using two horizontal lines and two vertical lines. By following the “rule of thirds”, you can create a more natural-looking photo, which will also make it easier to edit your photo. You can compose your photo by lining up different elements using the intersection points or sections of the grids.

To show the “rule of thirds” grid on your camera app, go to Settings on your iPhone. Scroll down until you see Camera, then toggle on the Grid option.

You can toggle on other camera features such as “mirror front photos” or “Auto HDR”

2) Edit your photo in the Photos App

The iPhone Photos App allows you to edit your photos on the go with key editing tools such as cropping, filters, exposure, shadows, contrast, saturation, and more. This is a great application for simple editing. Go to the Photos app and open a photo you would like to edit then select Edit at the top right.

Crop & Straighten: The first thing you should do is crop and straighten your photo. In this photo, I have a white dot at the top that I don’t want showing in the photo, so I’m going to crop that out. The iPhone’s straighten tool also allows you to adjust the vertical and horizontal perspective when viewing your subject.

The Photos App editing tools can be found at the bottom of the screen

Exposure, Highlights, Shadows, and Contrast: A great photo can change instantly by fixing the exposure, highlights, shadows, and contrast. By experimenting with these tools, your photo can stand out more by looking more natural or professional. Since I want my photo to remain dark and feel like a summer evening, I will keep the colors darker, but make any lights stand out. To do this, I will change the exposure to 8, highlights to -50, shadows to 50 and contrast to -10.

Saturation & Vibrance: Increasing the saturation will change the intensity of colors in a photo. If you’d like your colors to pop, you can increase the saturation. For a night-themed photo with lights, I like to increase the saturation to 50. Vibrance will change the intensity of more muted color tones such as the blue sky in our photo example.

Use the slider tool to change the amount of saturation or vibrance in a photo

Continue experimenting with different editing tools in the Photos app such as filters to understand styles that you like or don’t like!

3) Edit & Export your photo in Kapwing

If you’d like to do more with your photo such as add text, create a collage, or show a before and after photo, Kapwing is an application that can help you.

First, go to kapwing.com in the Safari app on the iPhone then select Start Editing. From here, select Click to upload and find your photo in your photo library. Once your photos are uploaded, select Edit image, and you will see different features such as adjust, crop, erase and rotate. Click adjust and scroll down to view the editing tools. Adjust the look of your image by using the slider tools and click Done Adjusting when you’re satisfied with your edits.

To add text, select the text tool at the top and a “sample text” will appear. Move the text to a desired spot on the photo. You can view more text editing tools such as changing the font, text color or adding an outline, which is what I did. When you’re finished editing your photo click Export Image on the top and click Download on the next page.

How to adjust the contrast of a photo using the iphone photos app

Increase contrast is an Accessibility feature that makes it easier to make out text and interface elements iPhone and iPad. While one of the modern design tenants at Apple is depth, achieved by layers of transparency and blur, for some people with visual impairments, it results mainly in noise and distraction. With increase contrast the transparency becomes solid and the blue becomes sharp, making everything clearer and easier to read, tap, and understand.

How to darken colors, reduce the white point, and turn off transparency on iPhone and iPad

  1. Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Tap on Accessibility.
  4. Tap on Increase Contrast.
  5. Turn On or Off any of the toggles for the options you’d like — below is a description of what each does along with screenshots.

How to adjust the contrast of a photo using the iphone photos appHow to adjust the contrast of a photo using the iphone photos app

Reduce Transparency – As you can see in the screenshots below, reducing the transparency will add a solid background to the dock on every Home screen along with making Control Center, popups, and keyboards much less transparent.

How to adjust the contrast of a photo using the iphone photos app

Darken Colors – Darkening colors will make menus and tabs darker which may make them stand out more so you can read them easier. In the screenshots below, you can tell that the menu buttons are a darker shade of blue when the Darken Colors option is turned on.

Reduce White Point – Reducing the white point will make whites across iOS much less harsh. Simply toggling the switch on and off should give you a pretty good idea of whether or not you prefer the brighter whites or the toned down versions.

Do you use any of these options on your iPhone or iPad to make iOS easier on your eyes? Are there any other options you’d like to see Apple add in future versions of iOS? Be sure to let me know in the comments!

Apple introduced quite a few camera improvements to the entire iPhone 13 lineup this year. In addition to getting upgraded camera sensors, there are a few software tweaks and effects that have been added. One of which was Cinematic Mode, which allows you to rack the focus of a video while recording or even after you’re finished. But another one is for those who love taking pictures, and it’s called Photographic Styles.

At first glance, you may think that Photographic Styles is just a fancy “buzzword” Apple is using for “filters”. Admittedly, we thought the same, until it was actually explained on stage. Here’s Apple’s official explanation from the iPhone 13 announcement:

Photographic Styles allows users to bring their personal photo preferences to every image while still benefitting from Apple’s multiframe image processing. Preset and customized preferences work across scenes and subjects, and unlike a simple filter, intelligently apply the right adjustments to different parts of the photo to ensure the important elements, like skin tones, are preserved.

In addition to the magic provided by computational processing, there’s something truly special about Photographic Styles. Instead of needing to adjust the settings every time you unlock your iPhone, whatever option you select remains the “default” even after closing the Camera app altogether. This helps you to unlock your personal style of photography, and create images that nobody else would be able to.

The biggest “catch” for those who use Photographic Styles is a pretty minor one. Unlike filters, that can be applied before and after an image is captured, the same cannot be said about this new iPhone 13 feature. If you snap a series of pictures using one style, you are not able to change that style after it has been captured.

When you open the Camera app for the first time on your iPhone 13, you’ll see a prompt to set up your Photographic Styles. However, this is something that you might not be expecting and just want to snap a picture quickly. Luckily, if you skipped or bypassed the splash screen on the first launch, you can still create these Styles. Here’s how to set up and use Photographic Styles on your iPhone.

    • Vibrant Style – Wonderfully bright and vivid colors create a brilliant yet natural look.

Once selected, all of your photos will have this new style applied to them. And while there are some great third-party camera applications, such as Halide, Photographic Styles only works with Apple’s stock Camera app.

In addition to jumping into the Settings app to change the Photographic Styles you want to use, there’s actually a much-simpler option. And the best part about it is that you don’t even need to leave the Camera app if it’s already open. Here’s how you can change Photographic Styles on the fly:

  1. With the Camera app open, tap the Up Arrow at the top of the page.
  2. From the menu bar that appears, tap the third icon from the right.
    • The icon looks similar to a stack of images and its next to the “4:3” icon.
  3. Swipe to the left to switch to a different Photographic Style.

Apple has even taken things a step further if you opt to switch Photographic Styles from within the Camera app. You can also adjust the Tone and Warmth levels after selecting the Style of your choice. Just tap on either Tone or Warmth and drag the slider until the image looks the way you want.

What’s nifty about this feature is that, unlike changing Photographic Styles within the Settings app, you get a live preview of what the viewfinder sees. This gives you a much-better idea of what the final image will look like based on the Photographic Style selected.
