How to add your url to google

Google, in its own words, uses a huge set of computers to crawl billions of pages on the web. This crawler, called the Googlebot, essentially begins with a list of web page URLs generated from previous crawls and then augments those pages with sitemap data provided within Google Search Console. During the crawling process, the Googlebot — also known as a “spider” — looks for new sites, updates to existing pages, and any broken links.

If new pages are within your sitemap, Google will discover them and crawl the content and then potentially list the page within search results based on its evaluation of 200+ criteria.

Once the crawling process is complete, all of the results are fed into Google’s index, and any new sites or updated content will be listed accordingly. During the processing of results, Google looks at information on your page such as title tags, meta description, alt tags, and more. If you have dynamic content on a page, the Googlebot may not be able to read it and will crawl the default version — it’s recommended that your default version is optimized for search.

As a result of Google’s crawling, you may never need to submit your website as it will be discovered automatically. The downside to this approach has always been that it’s reliant on Google’s timeframe to crawl and index your site content, which may not happen as quickly as you would like.

Want to check if a particular site is listed in Google? Just begin your search with “” For example, here’s what is displayed in Google for

If no content is indexed yet for a site, Google will let you know that your search did not match any results.

If no content is found, your next step should be to create a sitemap that can be submitted to Google.

How Long Does It Take for Google to Index Content?

My former colleague Casey Henry wondered this very question and ran a test to see how long it took Yahoo! and Google to crawl and index content. The results? Well, they were staggering.

When publishing content without manually submitting an updated sitemap, Henry found that it took Google 1,375 minutes to crawl, while Yahoo took 1,773 minutes. To put those numbers into perspective, that’s roughly a full-day just to crawl your content.

On the other hand, if you’re launching a new website, or adding a number of new pages to an existing domain, it may be worth submitting an updated sitemap. According to the same study, Henry found that after submitting an updated sitemap, the average time it took for a bot to visit the page was 14 minutes, compared to Yahoo!’s 245 minutes. In other words, your new page can start generating organic traffic and conversions on the same day.

How Do I Submit My Site to Google?

To submit your website to Google, you can either add an updated sitemap to your Google account, or submit an indexing request for the desired URL through Fetch as Google. Both processes require site owners to register with Google Search Console.

Here are the specifics of each option:

If you have a brand new site .

If you’re launching a website for the first time, you should first verify you own the site within Google Search Console. Then, submit it here — select the “submit a sitemap” option once you land on this page.

If you have an existing site and are launching new pages .

With a web domain already launched, you can still submit new pages for Google to index and rank them accordingly. Anyone used to be able to do this with a page they wanted crawled, whether they owned the page or not. Now, just as you would when launching a brand new website, you must be the URL’s owner to ask Google to re-crawl it.

If you own a webpage you’d like Google to re-crawl, you can do a few different things:

Submit an Updated Sitemap

First, you can submit an updated sitemap to ensure it gets listed as quickly as possible. To submit an updated sitemap, log in to Google Search Console and select “Add a Property.”

Once you’re there, you can submit your updated sitemap for Google so it can begin crawling it as soon as possible.

Fetch as Google

Fetch as Google allows you to view webpages on your site as Google sees them. As a site owner, you can also use this tool to reindex individual URLs once you’ve fetched them. To do this, log into Google Search Console and select the property you have currently listed with Google.

Along the lefthand sidebar, select Crawl > Fetch as Google, as shown below:

How to add your url to google

This will pull up a table where you can enter a URL path following your domain name, and “Fetch” this particular webpage on your website. See what this looks like below:

How to add your url to google

As you can see above, two sample Fetch requests have been listed below the Fetch bar. The status of these fetches is “Partial,” but once these fetches are complete, Google will assess their eligibility for reindexing. If the URL you’ve fetched qualifies, you’ll see a “Request Indexing” option appear where the red box is in the screenshot above. Select this option, and Google will begin the process of re-crawling and reindexing this webpage.

As stated earlier in this article, indexing requests can take anywhere from a day to a couple of weeks to complete. So, check your Fetch as Google table periodically to see the status of your active indexing requests.

Based on the above instructions, you may be wondering if you need to submit an updated sitemap or indexing request every time you publish a new page. If you’re updating critically important content that you’d like Google to recognize quickly, you certainly could do so. But keep in mind Google also re-crawls pages on its own, and it’s ok to let this process work in the background as you regularly create and update your content.

Here is how to add a website property to your Search Console account. Note that you must be able to prove that you own the site (or appropriate section of that site) in order to add it to your Search Console account. You can create a property that includes an entire domain ( or a property that is limited to a single branch (

Types of website properties

Search Console supports the following website property types:

Includes only URLs with the specified prefix, including the protocol (http/https). If you want your property to match any protocol or subdomain (http/https/www./m. and so on), consider adding a Domain property instead. See more details.

🅧 – https does not match
🅧 – www. does not match

Add a new property

To add a new property:

  1. Open the property selector dropdown in any Search Console page.
  2. Select + Add property on the dropdown.
  3. Choose the type of property to add:
    • Specify the URL of your property exactly as it appears in the browser bar, including the final / mark. Any URLs that start with this prefix are included in your property.
    • If your site supports multiple protocols (http and https), you must add a separate property for each protocol. Similarly, if you support multiple subdomains (such as,, and you must add a separate property for each subdomain.
    • If you support other variations in your domain or protocol (,,, consider telling Google which URLs are canonical.
    • If you need to track data separately for multiple subsections of your site, consider creating a Search Console property for each domain or subpath that you want to track separately, as well as a property that contains them all. For example, if you have a travel site with specific subfolders covering Ireland, France, and Spain, you might create accounts for the following URL-prefix properties:
      • (or a Domain property for
      • (for your mobile site)

Specify the domain to cover. See below to learn the supported URL syntax and which URLs are included in your property. A Domain property requires DNS record verification to prove ownership, unless the property is on a Google product such as Blogger or Google Sites.

A Domain property URL is a URL without a protocol (http/https) or any directory parts (/some/path/). Note that the public suffix (.org, .com, and so on) is part of the property name, so the Domain property “” does not include “” or “”.

The following URLs are all valid Domain property definitions:

www is ignored. If you add www to your property name, the www will be ignored. For example, if you specify as your property URL, the property will be created as

A Domain property aggregates data for all subdomains, protocols, and subpaths of the property. For example, if you define a Domain property as “”, the data includes, any subdomains of (for example,,,, and so on), and any subpaths of any of those domains, on http, https, and ftp.

Here are some example Domain properties, and what they aggregate:

      • .
      • .
      • NOT
      • .
      • NOT

If you want to separate your Domain property data by subdomain, path, or protocol, use one of the following techniques:

      • Add a page filter in the Performance report to see data for specific protocols or subdomains
      • Create additional URL-prefix properties for segments of the Domain property; for example for the Domain property, create additional properties for,,, and so on.

      Google-hosted property

      • To verify immediately, follow the verification steps described without closing the popup window, then click Verify in the popup window. If it will take you some time to perform these steps, you can always save your settings and resume the process later (described next).
      • To pause and resume the process later, click Verify later to save your current state, close the popup, and verify your site at your convenience. After you have performed the required verification steps, finish verification by selecting the saved (but unverified) property in the property selector in the navigation bar, and selecting Verify.

      Re-add a removed property

You can re-add a property that you have removed without verification, as long as the property still has one verified owner.

To re-add the property, simply add the property as described above in steps 1-3, and you should automatically be re-verified.

As an administrator, you can map a URL to a site in Google Sites and classic Sites to create a short, easy-to-remember address for your public website. You can create up to 2,000 custom site addresses with your Google Workspace account.

      Considerations when mapping a URL

      • It might take up to 24 hours to see your changes reflected.
      • In new Sites, address mappings automatically supply domain-validated SSL certificates for secure connections. You can’t use other certificates.
      • In new Sites, you cannot map a site to a URL that’s under a different domain name.
• People can only see the mapped URL if the site is shared with anyone outside of your organization. If the site is shared with specific people or only with your organization, everyone sees the original URL, such as, instead of the mapped URL. For details, go to Set Google Sites sharing options.

Step 1: Turn on site creation for users

Before you begin: Make sure Sites is turned on for your users. For details, go to Control who uses classic and new Sites in your organization.

To turn on site creation for new Sites and classic Sites:

Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in

Step 2: Add a custom URL

Before you begin: If you’re mapping a URL to a secondary domain, the owner of the site must use the secondary domain for their email address. If the owner uses a different domain, you need to create an account for the user on the secondary domain and transfer ownership of the site to the new account. The user on the secondary domain must then duplicate the site (to change the site path to the secondary domain) and publish the duplicated site.

      1. In the Sites settings of your Admin console, click Custom URL.
      2. Click Add New Sites or Classic Sites depending on where the site is published.
      3. Click Continue.
      4. Enter the current URL for the site. The format of the URL depends on how the site was created:
        • Created with new Sites—The URL will be
        • Created with classic Sites and migrated to new Sites—The URL will be
        • Created with classic Sites—The URL will be
      5. Click Continue.
      6. Select a verified domain.
Note: If you’re mapping from new Sites, only the domain hosting the site is available.
      7. Enter a custom URL for the siteclick Continue.
      8. Set up the CNAME record with your domain host.
You update the CNAME record on your domain host’s website, not in your Admin console. Each domain host has a different process. For details, go to Add a CNAME record to your domain’s DNS records.
      9. Click Add Custom URL.

Create a naked domain address (Optional)

      Troubleshooting errors

      • The CNAME record wasn’t properly configured. For details, go to Add a CNAME record to your domain’s DNS records.
      • Your DNS provider lacks proper support for Certificate Authority Authorization (CAA). If this is the case, you can take one or more of the following actions:
        • Add a CAA record to your domain.
        • Contact your DNS provider to fix the CAA support.
        • Change to a DNS provider that provides proper CAA support.
        • Reconfigure a CAA record if it was explicitly configured to prevent issuance by Let’s Encrypt.

This error could be due to:

        • The fact that the site was created on the primary domain and shows the original domain when trying to add the custom URL.
        • Make a copy of the site using the new domain. This action allows the owner to map the site using the secondary domain.

To include a picture in Google search results, add your image to a website along with a description. While you can’t directly upload images into search results, searchable images posted on a website can show up in our search results.

Add your image to the web

        1. Post your image to a website

If you’d like your photograph or image to appear in Google search results, you’ll need to post the image on a website. If you don’t own a website, here are some free content hosting services that you can use:

        • Add the images to a blog using Blogger
        • Create your own website using Google Sites

By posting the image on a public and searchable website, you’ll make it possible for Google to find your image and add it to the Images index. When you upload the image, make sure that the page your image is on is publicly accessible. For example, if you posted the photo on Google+, make sure the privacy setting was Public.

For more tips on posting on a site that Google will index, read about adding a site to Google.

Tips to help your image appear in Search

To help your image appear in Google search results, follow these image publishing guidelines:

        • Include descriptive text. Include text somewhere near the image, like an “alt” tag or a caption. This helps Google understand what the image is showing and what searches it relates to.
        • Upload high-quality photos. Great image content is an excellent way to build traffic to your site.

Finally, be patient. Images you upload to the web won’t instantly appear in search results. You’ll need to wait until your site is indexed by Google before your images show up in search results.
