Apple Music has been available to the public for just about a month now, and so far the service looks like it will only continue to pick up steam as more non-streaming iPhone owners convert. But what do you do if you want to merge your current collection of indie hits, self-recorded tracks, and underground songs into Apple’s growing streaming archive?

Thankfully, the process of importing your own music into the Apple Music library is easy, and works both from the iTunes desktop client, and any music you have stored or recorded on your mobile iOS device.

Initial Setup

Initially when you join Apple Music, the service will automatically scan any local libraries you have to see if you have any music which is already available in the streaming archive.

How to add your own music to apple music

If it doesn’t register any hits on the music you want to add, you can then begin the process of importing your own music into the iTunes/iCloud ecosystem of storage and playback.

Adding Songs

First, go into the iTunes Menu using the desktop client. Click the icon in the top right corner, and choose the “Add File to Library” option from the drop-down menu.

Find the song you want to add from your computer, and open it in iTunes.

Once the file is synced, you can either create a playlist with it including any music bought on your iTunes account or incorporate it into a library with your favorited and saved Apple Music tracks.

Format Restrictions and Rules

Prior to uploading, any songs that are encoded in the formats of WAV, ALAC, or AIFF will be transcoded to a separate temporary AAC 256 Kbps file locally, though the original files will remain intact. You’ll also need to be sure that throughout uploading, your iTunes iCloud Music Library is enabled so you don’t lose any tracks between your desktop, laptop, and mobile devices.

How to add your own music to apple music

In this same set of restrictions, even specific MP3 files (as well as AAC) will have to meet a certain criteria before they are approved for Apple Music synchronization.

Once the music has been scanned and approved by the service, you’ll be able to create playlists that seamlessly.

After the song(s) are added to the iTunes iCloud Music Library, you’ll be able to access them from any iOS device of your choosing as long as the track itself is not DRM encrypted by a third party.

Apple Music has been rolled out to the market for quite a few years, but before that, many music lovers had already had their own music library lying on their computer or other streaming platforms. If they switch to Apple Music, how can they play songs that provided by the platform as well as songs they’ve been long collecting? The solution is to upload music to Apple Music and play them in the Apple Music app.

Thankfully, it’s pretty easy to add songs that you already owned on your device to Apple Music. In the following parts, I’m going to show you how to add songs to Apple Music and a tip to help you seamlessly play your own songs and Apple Music songs on any device.

How to Add Music to Apple Music

To add your own music to Apple Music, basically you’ll have to do this on your computer. Install the iTunes app and make sure that your Apple Music subscription is currently active, then you’re good to go.

Step 1: Launch iTunes on your computer, go to File > Add File(Folder) to Library.

Step 2: Select the file you want to add, then click Open.

How to add your own music to apple music

Songs will be added to your iTunes Library, you can play them on your iTunes. But now you still can’t play these songs on Apple Music on other devices since they’ll still not synced to your Apple Music library. For that matter, you’ll have to turn on iCloud Music Library to sync your music from iTunes to other devices:

1. Open iTunes, go to Edit > Preferences

2. Under General, tick the iCloud Music Library. Then your newly added songs will show up on the Apple Music app.

How to add your own music to apple music

But there’s still a problem, which is frequently asked by Apple Music users.

I have a number of songs/albums from artists not on Apple Music. I know I can upload them, but will they be seamlessly integrates into stuff that Apple Music has?

For example, the band Hardcore Superstar. They have about 9 albums, but Apple Music only has 4. I can upload the other 5. That’s easy. But if I go to that band and hit shuffle so it only plays Hardcore Superstar, will it only shuffle what Apple Music has or will it shuffle a combination of my uploaded music and Apple Music? – – Garnold from Reddit

The answer is yes, though the syncing process could possibly mess up some of your songs. Once you successfully synced your own collection to Apple Music, the app will automatically try to search for the exact same artist/song/album and other metadata and add to your library. You can put all your newly added song in a playlist, mixing with songs that are on Apple Music and play them together.

If Apple Music can’t find the song, then only you can access to the song in your own Apple Music Library.

Play Your Own Collection and Apple Music Songs Everywhere

After you synced your own collection to Apple Music, you can only stream them on Apple Music or iTunes app. If you want to play the whole library or playlist mixing with your songs and Apple Music songs elsewhere, technically it’s not accessible. Since all the tracks on Apple Music are protected, users are not allowed to play them on any other media players outside Apple.

But with the ViWizard Apple Music Converter, you can download all your iTunes Library to MP3 and save them to your computer. Then you can play songs from Apple Music and your own collection together everywhere.

How to add your own music to apple music

Comes with an intuitive interface, the ViWizard Audio Converter is designed to convert all protected iTunes, Apple Music songs and radio shows into MP3, M4A, AAC, FLAC and other common formats.

The specially designed booster will keep the converting speed up to 30X faster with high output quality preserved. With this tool, you’ll be able to remove the protection of all the songs from your iTunes Library and play them anywhere you want.

Add your own music to your iPhone without iTunes.

Maybe in iOS 13 we’ll be able to add songs to our music iPhone libraries without having to wake up a Mac or PC running iTunes. Until then, there’s no way to listen to songs downloaded from Bandcamp, or exported from GarageBand, alongside the rest of your music collection.

But there’s a workaround. Vox is a slightly confusing music app that combines your built-in Apple Music library with your Soundcloud, Spotify, and other services. And it will also let you import any audio file, and then add it to playlists and so on. Let’s check it out.

How to add your own music to apple music

Vox even shows embedded album art.

How to add your own music to apple music

Vox bills itself as a high-res iPhone music player. This means that it can play FLAC lossless audio files in addition to MP3 and M4a files. In fact, Vox will play most audio files, including WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, and so on. It has a beautiful but unintuitive interface, and can also hook up to SoundCloud, Spotify, and Sonos. Listening to a song in the Files app lol.
Photo: Cult of Mac

This puts all your music sources into one app, which is pretty great. You can also create playlists (“collections,” in Vox) which combines songs from any of these services.

But today we want to talk about adding your own music to the app. It’s not as good as being able to add them to the Music app itself, but it’s way, way better than playing individual M4As from the Files app.

How to add songs to Vox

How to add your own music to apple music

This is dead easy. In fact, you already know how to do it. The real tip today, then, isn’t how to add music to Vox. It’s the PSA that you can add your own music to Vox. Still, here it is: You already know how to add songs to Vox.
Photo: Cult of Mac

Just find the audio file, anywhere on your iPhone, and and add it to Vox using the share extension. Once added, your song will show up in Vox. And if that song has embedded artwork – say you exported it from GarageBand with custom album art, then that will also be included.

From there, you can listen to the song, add it to a playlist, and anything else. You can even tell Vox not to show any of your Apple Music library, so you can use it only as a player for your self-added music, and SoundCloud etc.

Like I said, maybe iOS 13 will add this ability to the built-in Music app. Until then, I’m using Vox. In fact, despite the convoluted interface, I’m starting to get used to it, and to like it. IT’s not like the Music app is really any better.

Apple Music comes with the most number of music collection. Many users find Spotify a better streaming platform for daily music, since it has lots of suggestions on the home page itself, from tracks to playlists. However, many users are unaware that they can personalize Apple Music.

You can choose which kind of songs you want to listen, and have the best suggestions from the Apple Music itself. Here is how to personalize Apple Music for you.

Ask Siri to Play Your Own Personalized Radio

Personalized Radio is a major thing from Apple Music, which auto picks songs from different sources which you would like. All your favorite songs, genres and personal interest saved by Apple Music will be utilized to customize the Personal Radio for you. Unlike the playlists, the Radio works like Pandora and keep providing you random songs that are similar to the one you listen to.

The Personalized Radio on Apple Music is not auto-created. For that, you have to trigger Apple Music to play your own radio. Here is how to do it from your iPhone.

  1. Trigger Siri on your iPhone or Mac.
  2. Command “Play me some music” or “Play My Radio.”

It will then direct you to Apple Music, create a radio for you and start music automatically. This works like magic. But there is no way you can create or save the station manually to your Music Library. If you are on Android phone, you can simply ask Google Assistant to “Play some music on Apple Music.” Once created the Personalized Station will be available from the “For You” tab on Apple Music.

Love or Dislike Songs

It is quite important to let Apple Music know your taste in music when you want to listen to similar kinds of songs on the go. The simplest method for that is to show your love or dislike. The Player window on Apple Music lets you like the song, or dislike it and skip.

From your action on liking or skipping a song, the Apple Music will keep the track of your listening pattern and suggest you similar songs. Here is how you can love or dislike a song on Apple Music, from your iPhone or Android device.

  1. Open Apple Music and discover the song you want to play.
  2. Swipe up and expand the mini-player at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap the three dots icon on the player window.
  4. Tap “Love” to like the song and get more similar tracks.
  5. If you do not like the song, tap “Suggest less like this.”

By letting know Apple about your favorite music, Apple Music can suggest you more songs that would match your personal music taste. You can also add the song to your Library, so you will not have to search for your favorite songs next time you want to play them.

Get Used with Mixes

Similar to playlists and stations, Apple Music has a lot of Mixes that might help you get more songs which you may like. Apple suggests Mix stations on a weekly basis. All the songs and tracks within the mixes are mainly grabbed from your music listening pattern and history.

There are several Mixes on Apple Music including Chill Mix, Favorites Mix, Friends Mix, and New Music Mix. Each of the Mix playlists gets an update weekly. So, if you add a Mix to your Library on Apple Music, you will get new songs from the same Mix every week. Adding Mixes to the Library is a perfect way to get new music that matches your taste.

The Chill Mix will have all your frequently-listened songs, favorite ones, etc. Apple rolls out updated Chill Mix playlist, which is personalized, for each Apple Music user. Your Favorite Mix is obviously the playlist that contains all your favorite tracks throughout your recent listening history. Here is how you can play different Mix playlists on Apple Music.

  1. Open Apple Music app on your iPhone or Android.
  2. Tap “For You.”
  3. Find out the recommended Mix from the window.
  4. If you could not find out any Mix from Apple Music, ask Siri to play the particular Mix.

It generally takes a month of usage to create your own Chill Mix and Favorites Mix. So, if you are new to Apple Music, wait for a little more to get all your personalized playlists.

Follow Your Friends

If you have added your friends to Apple Music, you will be able to see which of the music they are listening to. The Friends Mix can automatically list out the songs they are listening to. You can also manually find and play music from your friends’ circle.

If you have not added any of your friends to Apple Music, you would not get the Friends Mix playlist on your Music app. Here is how to connect with friends on Apple Music.

  1. Open Apple Music app on your iPhone.
  2. Take the “For You” tab from the bottom.
  3. Tap on your profile picture at the top right corner.
  4. Scroll down and toggle on “Contacts on Apple Music.” This will help you find your contacts on Apple Music and connect with them.
  5. Tap the Facebook option just above and connect your account with Apple Music.
  6. By enabling the Find Friends method both way, you will get more suggestions on people to follow.

Adding music to Catalina’s music app is as easy as using iTunes.

In macOS Catalina, iTunes has disappeared. It’s been replaced by the new Music app, which is a version of the iOS Music app. You could never call iTunes “beloved,” but it did its job, and had plenty of power hidden inside its confusing and bloated interface. The Apple Music app, on the other hand, is rather basic. But it still lets you do one thing that remains impossible on iOS: You can add your own music to your library. And yes, it will then sync that music to your iDevices. Let’s see how.

Music or music?

First, a note: Things may get a little confusing, thanks to Apple calling its music app “Music.” For instance, the location of the iTunes library used to be in

/Music/iTunes. Now it’s in

Three ways to add songs to Catalina’s Music app

There are lots of ways to add your own songs to Music, including direct export from apps like Logic Pro X. Today we’ll look at the three easiest and quickest ways to add music to your Mac.

Drag and drop onto the Music app

This one is pretty obvious. Just drag a music file — an MP3, M4a, WAV or other music file over the Music app window, and drop it. If you can’t see the window, you also can drop the file(s) onto the Music app’s icon, either in the Dock or in the Finder. Bonus tip: If you have playlists, you can drag the music files directly to those to add them to both the library and the playlist. If the playlists are kept in iCloud, though, you won’t be able to add songs to them until those songs have also been uploaded to iCloud.

Double-click in the Finder

Another way to add music on your Mac is by simply double-clicking any music file in the Finder or on the desktop. Then the file will open in the Music app and start playing. You also can right-click on a file and choose Open with… from the contextual menu. Then select Music.

Import from the Music app

In the Music app, go to File > Import in the menu bar, or hit ⌘O on the keyboard. This opens the standard macOS open/import dialog, and you can navigate to the file or folder you want to add. You can import whole folders or individual files. ⌘-click files to select more than one.

Bonus tip: Auto import your music

Inside the Music app’s folder (

/Music/Music/Media), you’ll find a folder named Automatically Add to Music. Anything you put in there will be added to your Music library. If the app isn’t running, these songs will be added next time it launches. This trick has been around since iTunes 9, back in 2009.

Clearly this isn’t as easy as just as double-clicking a file to add it. But if you’re running automations on your Mac, this folder is a good target for any music files you want to automatically add.

The Music app

The macOS Catalina Music app is pretty good. It works just as you’d expect, and is no more annoying than iTunes. There’s one big problem, though. An iTunes library can be read by any app that wants to. I use Launchbar on my Mac to do pretty much everything, and it used to let me search for and play songs directly from the keyboard. Apple’s new Music app doesn’t let me do that. I must manually search and click Play for every song I want to listen to.

But at least you can still add your own music in the Music app on Mac. And if you use iCloud Music Library, those songs will sync to your iPhone and iPad.
