With widgets, you get timely information from your favorite apps at a glance.

With iOS 14 and later, you can use widgets on your Home Screen to keep your favorite information at your fingertips. Or you can use widgets from Today View by swiping right from the Home Screen or Lock Screen.

Edit your widgets

With iOS 14 and later, you can configure your widgets. For example, you can edit the Weather widget to see the forecast for your current location or a different location. Here’s how:

  1. Touch and hold a widget to open the quick actions menu.
  2. Tap Edit Widget .
  3. Make your changes, then tap outside of the widget to exit.

You can also move your widgets around to put your favorites where they’re easier to find. Just touch and hold a widget until it jiggles, then move the widget around on the screen.

Use widget stacks

With iOS 14 and later, you can use widget stacks to save space on your Home Screen and in Today View. You can use Smart Stacks or create your own widget stacks.

Add a Smart Stack

A Smart Stack is a pre-built collection of widgets that displays the right widget based on factors like your location, an activity, or time. A Smart Stack automatically rotates widgets to show the most relevant information throughout the day. Here’s how to create a Smart Stack:

  1. Touch and hold an area on your Home Screen or in Today View until the apps jiggle.
  2. Tap the Add button in the upper-left corner.
  3. Scroll down and tap Smart Stack.
  4. Tap Add Widget.

Create your own widget stacks

  1. Touch and hold an app or empty area on the Home Screen or Today View until the apps jiggle.
  2. Drag a widget on top of another widget. You can stack up to 10 widgets.
  3. Tap Done.

Edit a widget stack

  1. Touch and hold the widget stack.
  2. Tap Edit Stack. From here, you can reorder the widgets in the stack by dragging and dropping the app where you want it in the stack. You can also turn Smart Rotate * on or off. Or swipe left over a widget to delete it.
  3. Tap the Close button when you’re done.

* When Smart Rotate is on, iOS shows you relevant widgets throughout the day.

With iOS 15, you can turn on Widget Suggestions, so apps you already use can automatically appear in your Smart Stack at the right time based on your past activity. An option lets you add the widget to your stack so it’s always there when you need it. Just follow steps 1-2, then tap Widget Suggestions to turn it on.

You need iOS 14 or later to use Smart Stacks or create your own widget stacks.

  1. Swipe all the way to the right on your Home Screen to show Today View.
  2. Touch and hold an empty area in Today View until the widgets jiggle.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of Today View, then tap Customize.
  4. Tap the Add button next to each app widget that you want to add.

You can also rearrange your widgets. Touch and hold a widget until it jiggles, then move the widget where you want it to go. As you move the widget, apps and other widgets on your Home Screen rearrange to make room for it.

To delete a widget, touch and hold it, then tap Remove Widget. Tap Remove to confirm.

Use widget stacks

Widget stacks combine several widgets into one. You can scroll vertically through the widgets in a stack, or you can turn on Smart Rotate to let iPadOS show you relevant widgets automatically. For example, you might see Calendar during the day to show your upcoming events, and Maps in the evening to show your commute time.

Create your own widget stacks

You can create a stack using widgets that you choose, and then customize how it works:

  1. Touch and hold an empty area on your Home Screen or in Today View until the apps and widgets jiggle.
  2. Drag a widget on top of another widget of the same size.
  3. Drag other widgets of the same size on top of the stack to add them. You can stack up to 10 widgets.
  4. Tap Done in the upper-right corner, or just tap your Home Screen.

Use a Smart Stack

A Smart Stack is an automatically selected collection of widgets that displays information based on factors like your location, activity, or time. The widgets in a Smart Stack rotate throughout the day to show the most relevant information.

Here’s how to add a suggested Smart Stack:

  1. Touch and hold an empty area on your Home Screen, then tap the Add button when it appears in the upper-left corner.
  2. Select Smart Stack in the list on the left.
  3. Swipe left or right on the Smart Stack to choose a size, then tap Add Widget.
  4. Tap Done in the upper-right corner, or just tap your Home Screen.

How to edit a widget stack

  1. Touch and hold the widget stack.
  2. Tap Edit Stack. From here, you can reorder the widgets in the stack by dragging them up or down. You can also:
    • Turn on Smart Rotate if you want iPadOS to show you relevant widgets from your stack throughout the day.
    • Turn on Widget Suggestions to allow iPadOS to add widgets that you might find useful.
    • Tap the delete button on a widget to remove it from the stack.
  3. Tap Done in the upper-right corner, or just tap your Home Screen.

Make your iPhone or iPad Home Screen more useful by creating custom widgets with Widgetsmith.

Since the release of iOS and iPadOS 14, Apple has let you customize your iPhone and iPad Home Screen to suit your preferences. While the full customization ability on iOS doesn't come anything close to Android, you can now make a couple of different changes to make your Home Screen stand out.

Widgetsmith is among the most popular iOS apps that allow you to create custom iPhone widgets. This article will show you how to use Widgetsmith to create your own widgets on iPhone or iPad.

Getting Started With Widgetsmith

Image Gallery (2 Images)

One thing that makes Widgetsmith stand out is its ease of use. The app keeps it simple by providing you with ready-made, customizable templates. No wonder it's one of the best apps for creating custom iPhone widgets.

That makes it easy for virtually anyone, even those who aren't tech savvy, to tinker with full-blown customization apps like Scriptable.

You can create a variety of widgets using Widgetsmith. Available categories include photos, time, date, step-counting, health and activity, battery, calendar, reminders, astronomy, weather, and tides widgets. Weather and tides are under a $1.99 monthly subscription (or $19.99/year). The subscription also unlocks additional widget themes and removes in-app ads.

To use Widgetsmith you may need to grant the app several permissions, including access to your location, calendar, reminders, health, and photos. Open the app, tap Settings, and tap Authorize on individual permissions to give them.

These permissions are essential to ensure the app functions usually. Remember, you don't have to grant Widgetsmith particular permission if you don't plan to use a feature that relies on such data. For instance, if you won't use the calendar widget, there's no need to authorize Widgetsmith to access your calendar.

How to Make a Widget Using Widgetsmith

Creating custom widgets using Widgetsmith is a cinch thanks to the app's easy-to-use UI.

Did you know you could add widgets directly to the iPad’s home screen? You can stack them and add them to multiple home screens, much like you can on the iPhone. This was introduced with iPadOS 15. Learn about adding widgets to your iPad’s home screens in this video for the iPad.

Now, if you have an iPhone, you know that you can add widgets to your home screen. These widgets could be your latest Mail messages, latest News, or even the Weather. Well, we can now add these same widgets to our iPad home screen. It works very similar to how it works on the iPhone.

All we have to do is just go into our jiggly mode. To get into our iggly mode, I can tap and hold at any one of the app icons. But what I find easiest is to just tap and hold outside of an app icon. When I tap into hold outside of an app icon, it immediately goes into that jiggling mode. We can see that our app icons are joggling.

To add a widget, we just go up to the plus here, and from here I can select from all of my different widgets. So let’s go and add a Calendar. Tap on it. I select which widget I want. We’re going to go with this widget here. I can tap on Add Widget or what I can do is just drag this out and place it where I want.

So let’s go and drag this out. I just tap and hold on it. And then I drag it and I place it where I want. And it goes back to our widgets. Now I can add another widget. Let’s go with our News widget. I tap on. And then I select which widget size I want. And then I just drag it to my home screen again, and I can drag it to a different home screen if I wanted to.

Now, when I drag this, we can stack our widgets. When I drag this, what I am able to do is place it on top of another widget. But if you notice I can’t do that here. So how do I do that? Well, the easiest way is to just place it. And then once you place it, what you’re able to do is drag it on top of another widget. You’re going to see that this has two widgets. When you are finished, you just tap anywhere outside of an app icon. And now you’ve just placed your widget. I’m able to swipe through them because this is a stack.

If you want to edit any one of the widgets, let’s go over to my calendar, I want to edit this particular widget. If you tap and hold on it, you’re going to get a menu. And from here I can edit the stack or I can edit the calendar widget. So I tap on edit Calendar, and now I’m able to set which calendar I want to show in this widget.

If I wanted to edit the stack, then what I would do is I would tap and hold on this again. And then we go over to Edit Stack. When I tap on this, I’m able to edit my stack. I can turn on Smart Rotation as well as add Widget Suggestions. To remove a widget from a stack, you just tap on the minus in the upper left hand corner of the widget you want to remove. I tap outside here again to close it.

So that’s how we work with our widgets on the iPad. As you can see, it’s very similar to how it works on an iPhone, if you have an iPhone. Essentially what we have to do is go into our jiggly mode. I find it easiest to just tap outside of any app icon. If you tap on an app icon, you have to tap and hold a little bit longer because you’re going to get a menu that pops up. But if you just tap outside of an app icon, then what you’re able to do is go directly into that jiggle mode. Once all the apps are jiggling, you just go up to the plus in the upper left hand corner, select which widget you want and drag it onto your home screen. You can drag it to any one of your home screens to stack widgets. You just drag one widget on top of another. You may have to drag it to your home screen in order to get this. In some cases you can drag it directly from where all of your widgets are. And other cases I’ve found that you have to drag it to the home screen first and then drag it on top of another widget. So you may have to experiment with this a little bit, and then if you want to edit your widgets, you tap and hold on the widget and you can select from editing the actual widget that you’re looking at or editing the stack if it’s a stack of widgets.

How to add widgets to your home screen on iphone or ipad

If you’re enjoying the new feature for adding widgets to your iPhone, you’re not alone. And with a photo widget, having your favorite faces or scenes right on your Home Screen is a great way to start your day.

You have a couple of ways to add a photo widget on your iPhone Home Screen. One option is obviously using the Photos app widget provided by Apple. The other is to use a third-party app with a custom widget. Here we’ll explain how to use both ways for a photo widget on your iPhone.

Add the Photos app widget

Along with its other apps, Apple offers a widget for the Photos app. This is probably your first choice when you want to add a photo widget and it’s easy to do.

1) Press and hold a blank spot on your screen until the icons jiggle.

2) Tap the plus sign that appears on the top right to open the Widget Gallery.

3) Select the Photos widget from the popular spot at the top or from the list.

4) Choose one of the three widget sizes and tap Add Widget.

How to add widgets to your home screen on iphone or ipad

Adding the widget is the simple part. Selecting the photos you see in the widget is where things get difficult.

Picking the photos

Unfortunately, Apple’s Photos widget does not let you pick the photos you want to display in the widget.

As you will see when selecting the widget size, the photos that display come from your Memories and Featured Photos in the Photos app. And, Featured Photos are chosen by the Photos app, not by you.

How to add widgets to your home screen on iphone or ipad

Currently, the only control you have over this is to exclude pictures and another limitation is that you can only exclude pictures considered Featured Photos from the widget. To do this, follow these steps.

1) Tap the photo when you see it on the widget which will open it in Photos. Or open the Photos app directly and tap the picture in the Featured Photos section on the For You tab.

2) Select the photo to open it and tap the Share button. Alternatively, press and hold on the photo until the shortcut menu opens.

3) Choose Remove from Featured Photos.

How to add widgets to your home screen on iphone or ipad

Again, this process does not work for removing Memories or excluding photos within Memories that display in the Photos widget. Hopefully all of this is something Apple will change for the Photos app widget down the road.

Add a photo widget with Widgetsmith

If you’re disappointed in the limitations with Apple’s own Photos widget, and actually want to change the photo in the widget, you do have another option.

Widgetsmith is a free, third-party app that lets you create custom widgets and luckily you can add a photo or an entire album straight from your Photos app. And best of all, you choose the photos and get to change them anytime!

1) Open Widgetsmith and pick a small, medium, or large widget size.

2) Tap Default Widget.

3) Scroll through the widget types until you spot Custom.

4) Select either Photo if you want to display a specific photo, or Photos in Album if you want to display all the photos from a specific album.

5) Tap the tab below that reads either Selected Photo or Selected Album and choose the photo or album you want to use.

6) Hit the arrow on the top left to go back. Optionally you can Tap to Rename the widget at the top.

7) Tap Save when you finish.

How to add widgets to your home screen on iphone or ipad

Now that you have your photo or album widget created, add it to the Home Screen like any other widget from the Widget Gallery. You can also follow the same steps as above for adding the Photos widget, but instead, pick Widgetsmith and the size of the photo widget you created.

How to add widgets to your home screen on iphone or ipad

Once the widget is on your Home Screen, tap and hold it, pick Edit Widget, and select the photo or album widget.

Wrapping it up

You can add a photo widget to your iPhone Home Screen easily. If you don’t mind only seeing Memories or Featured Photos, then use Apple’s Photos widget. But if you prefer to pick the photos you see, check out Widgetsmith or a similar app for creating custom widgets.

How to add widgets to your home screen on iphone or ipad

The iPhone gets powerful home screen widgets in iOS 14, but the iPad doesn’t get the same powers with iPadOS 14. No matter: There’s still a way to place widgets on your iPad’s home screen.

Apple may one day add the iPhone’s powerful home screen widgets to the iPad home screen in a future update to iPadOS. For now, there’s a workaround: You can place the widgets in Today View and keep a widget area on your Home screen in landscape mode. Here’s how to set it up.

First, open “Settings” by tapping the gray gear icon.

How to add widgets to your home screen on iphone or ipad

In Settings, navigate to “Home Screen & Dock.” In the “App Icons” section, place a check mark beside the “More” option. (If “Bigger” is selected, you won’t be able to place the Today View on your Home screen.)

After that, flip the switch beside “Keep Today View On Home Screen” to turn it on. This will allow you to place widgets within the Today View on your Home screen.

How to add widgets to your home screen on iphone or ipad

After that, return to your Home screen and make sure you’re in landscape mode (with the longest dimension of the iPad oriented left-to-right). You should see the Today View to the left side of the screen, and app icons to the right.

Note that Today View widgets only appear on your Home screen in landscape mode. If you switch to portrait mode, Today View will disappear. (However, you can still reveal Today View with a quick swipe to the right.)

How to add widgets to your home screen on iphone or ipad

To add widgets to Today View, swipe upward in the Today View area until you see an “Edit” button at the bottom of the screen. Tap it.

The icons will start to wiggle. To add a widget, tap the plus (+) button in the upper-left corner of the screen.

A widget selection panel will appear on the right half of the screen. Using this panel, you can swipe and browse through a list of available widgets. When you’ve found a widget you’d like to add, tap and drag it onto the Today View portion of the screen, then lift your finger.

How to add widgets to your home screen on iphone or ipad

While you’re add it, feel free to add several other widgets and arrange them how you like by dragging them around your screen with your finger. When you’re finished, tap “Done” in the upper-right corner of the screen.

After that, you’re all set! You’ll see the Home Screen as normal again, and the widgets you configured in Today View will be where you expect them.

If you change your mind and want to remove certain widgets, just tap the “Edit” button at the bottom of Today View again, then drag the widgets out of the Today View area. Have fun!

We’re hoping a future version of iPadOS gains support for iPhone-style widgets, so you can have a home screen full of widgets instead of app icons, if you like. But, for now, this is the best you can do.

How to add widgets to your home screen on iphone or ipad

It’s safe to say that widgets are the smash hit of iOS 14. From having at-a-glance info from your favorite apps to creating your own custom widgets and app icons, iOS 14 radically changes the look of your iPhone’s home screen — and unlike some changes software updates occasionally force upon us, this one’s for the better.

Of course, if you want to adorn your iPhone home screen in widgets of all shapes and sizes, you’ll need to first know how to add a widget in iOS 14. Fortunately, the process is pretty simple, with Apple giving you two ways to tweak your iPhone’s home screen by adding widgets.

Adding a widget in iOS 14: Use the Plus button

The easiest method for adding a widget to your iPhone home screen in iOS 14 is to opt for the plus button Apple helpfully supplies when you’re editing the look of your iPhone’s home screen. That button takes you directly to a widget panel, where you can select the exact type and size of widget you want. Here’s how to get started.

1. Long press on your iPhone’s screen to enter editing mode. The icons will start jiggling and an X will appear in the upper left corner of each app to let you know your home screen is ready to edit.

Want to go beyond the default widgets on your iPhone? Here’s how to make custom and stylish widgets with Scriptable.

Home screen widgets are one of the best new features in iOS. And while Apple’s implementation of widgets has been widely praised, some apps have taken this feature even further.

Scriptable is one of these apps. It lets you create custom widgets for your iPhone’s Home screen, which the community has used to create some amazing utilities.

Let’s look at what Scriptable is, how you can use it to create awesome iPhone widgets, and how to make your widgets blend in seamlessly with your Home screen wallpaper.

What Is Scriptable?

Scriptable is a free iOS app that lets you run JavaScript on your iPhone and iPad. If you’re a programmer, you can write your own scripts and run them. If you’re not familiar with any programming languages, you can just copy code written by others to add useful features to your iOS device.

For example, we’ve seen a script that automatically alerts you when there is a price drop on any of your favorite iOS apps.

Scriptable is still fairly new to the App Store, but it’s already added many game-changing features, including the ability to run scripts in iOS 14 widgets. This means that you can write or copy JavaScript code to Scriptable and have your own customized “mini apps” displaying information via widgets.

The Scriptable community has already created some wonderful widgets this way, with handy features like showing you weather data to a personalized news feed right on your Home screen.

While the possibilities are almost endless, you should keep a few limitations in mind. As of this writing, Home screen widgets are only supported on iPhones and the 7th-gen iPod touch. Unfortunately, you can’t add widgets to the Home screen on an iPad yet.

Baffling as this is, the limitation is from Apple’s end; it’s not Scriptable’s fault. Similarly, iOS 14 has certain memory limitations on Home screen widgets. If you’re planning to create your own widgets, be sure to check the limits before you start.

Finally, the Scriptable app has a gallery to help you quickly find the most interesting scripts and install them. This is good to get started with the app, but you’re better off looking for scripts hosted on GitHub because you’ll find detailed setup instructions there.

Scriptable’s gallery descriptions are not the most helpful for beginners; we’ve encountered some bugs like screenshots not being visible.

How to Set Up Scriptable

There are some common steps that you’ll have to follow while setting up Scriptable widgets, which includes copying the JavaScript code and importing it into the app. However, the final steps vary for each widget, which we’ll highlight a little later.

First, let’s cover the basics. Here’s what to do in order to get set up with Scriptable:

You’ve got a huge party coming up. Maybe it’s for your 21st birthday. Or maybe, if you’re aging as well as I try to convince myself I am, it’s your 48th. Either way, you want to keep track of how much time you have left to prepare for that big event. Now that Apple allows us to use iOS 14 Home Screen widgets, you can keep that reminder right in front of you.

Apps Have to Support iOS 14 Home Screen Widgets First

I’ve tried several different countdown apps, and not many support Home Screen widgets. I’d be surprised if that doesn’t change in the coming weeks. After all, iOS 14 was just released, and developers are surely still working to add support for the feature. Some, like the developers behind Widgetsmith, even help you create custom widgets for your Home Screen.

One app that already allows for Home Screen widgets, however, is Eventime. It’s a free app, with premium features through In-App Purchase. Here’s how to make it work for you.

Creating Your Countdown in Eventime

After you run Eventime for the first time, you go right into creating your first countdown timer. If you don’t see the menu, just tap the blue plus sign to get going. Next, fill in the details you want, including the date and time (if necessary) of your big event. After you do that, tap Add.

How to add widgets to your home screen on iphone or ipad

Add a new event in Eventimer as the first step to putting an iOS 14 Home Screen widget countdown on your iPhone or iPad

Go back to your Home Screen, then tap and hold until all of your icons start to wiggle. In the top right corner, tap the plus sign to add a widget. Scroll down until you see the Eventime widget for your event. Tap it, and you’ll see options for the widget size and which events the widget includes. Choose the one you want, tap Add Widget, and you’re done.
