If you use a concentrated amount of minerals additives, more than what it is usually found in untreated water, then you may have possible additional health benefits such as:

Vitamin increase – If you combine mineralized water with vitamins, the body may assimilate the vitamins more effectively. Some vitamins may not assimilate at all within the human body unless the presence of certain minerals are found in the body.

You’ve heard all the advice, you know you should be drinking more water, but you’d rather have something sweet and sugary or caffeinated. Just how can you make water more interesting? Well the good news is you don’t need to pay over the odds for plastic bottles of vitamin-infused water, it’s easy – and better – to make your own.

Why drink water?

The bottomline is that water keeps us alive. It keeps our cells hydrated and plump. It also flushes out toxins to naturally cleanse our insides, and keeps our brains working. We cannot live without it.

But there are times when drinking water gets boring and many of us turn to the chilled drinks fridge. Instead of buying vitamin water, flavored sparkling water or sports drinks, why not use nature’s good stuff, for free, right in your own home?

What is vitamin infused water?

Infused water has the benefits of drinking good-for-you water, plus the added taste of whatever you chose to add to your water. This can be fruit, vegetables, herbs or spices, or a combination of 2 or 3 things together. All without any added sugar or calories.

What flavours can you use?

You can soak cut pieces of fresh fruit or raw vegetables in a container, preferably fresh and organic. Frozen fruits won’t release as much juice as you’d like, and will more likely to sink to be bottom of your bottle or glass, which also goes for dried fruit.

Some fruits have strong flavours, such as pineapples, lemons and oranges, and can be reused. Just wait until the water is halfway down the bottle or pitcher, and then add more water.

You can also add herbs and spices that are both colourful and fragrant, not to mention all the added health benefits that will permeate into your water.

How it’s done

1. The first thing you have to do is release the natural oils and flavor in the fruit, veggies, herbs or spices. You can do this by either slightly mashing up fruit and vegetables using a wooden spoon. You can also break up the herbs or spices just a little bit. For citrus fruits, don’t forget to peel it before adding it to the water to avoid having that bitter taste.

2. Then, add filtered water, or sparkling water if you prefer. For best results, you can use water at room temperature, or even cold water if you like, just as you long as you don’t use boiling water as it will break down the enzymes and nutrients in the added ingredients.

3. Give it a good stir and leave it for at least 3 – 4 hours to get the most taste and colour. You can leave it in the fridge, or at room temperature, to do its magic. However, don’t leave the added ingredients in the water for more than 24 hours because most will start to decompose. Delicate fruits, such as berries and melons, tend to decompose quicker than other types.

4. You can safely store your water in the fridge for up to 4 days.

Benefits of Vitamin Infused Water

Are there really any added benefits to infused water besides taste and colour? Yes! Almost 20% of nutrients in the added ingredients get blended in and absorbed by water.

Therefore, if you add strawberries or lemons, you’re drinking water that’s rich in vitamin C. If you add basil or mint to your strawberries, you get the added benefits of minerals, such as iron, which helps the body absorb vitamin C, as well as antioxidants.

Both water and electrolytes are vital for overall health. While there are trace amounts of electrolytes in water, it's not enough to cover your daily needs. Simple tricks, such as adding a pinch of salt and lemon juice to plain water, can help maintain fluid and electrolyte balance in the body.

Homemade electrolyte drinks are healthier and significantly lower in sugar than sports beverages. Depending on your preferences, you can either mix electrolyte powder into water or add all-natural ingredients, such as lime juice, ginger and salt, to make your own electrolyte replacement drink.

Why Are Electrolytes Important?

Magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium and other electrolytes support the proper functioning of your cells and tissues. They help transport nutrients, balance your pH levels and remove waste from your system. These minerals also maintain normal fluid levels in your body, as the U.S. National Library of Medicine points out.

Electrolyte imbalances are often to blame for muscle cramps, abdominal pain, mood swings and cardiovascular problems, among other issues. Low potassium levels, for example, may affect your heart rhythm and muscle function. Too much potassium, on the other hand, may cause heart palpitations, arrhythmia and even paralysis.

One way to keep your electrolytes in balance is to consume foods and beverages containing these nutrients. However, certain factors can affect your electrolyte levels. Vomiting and diarrhea, intense exercise, chronic respiratory disorders and some medications, such as diuretics, are just a few examples.

Sports drinks may help restore your electrolyte balance. The downside is that they're loaded with sugar, additives and other chemicals.

Depending on their ingredients, these beverages can be just as harmful as soda. When consumed regularly, they may cause you to pack on pounds and increase your risk of diabetes, gout, heart disease and premature death, warns the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Why take unnecessary risks when you can make a delicious, healthy electrolyte drink at home? There are hundreds of recipes that take minutes to prepare. All you need is water and electrolyte powder, tablets or natural ingredients like sea salt and lemon juice.

Try Electrolyte Powder or Tablets

Electrolyte powder is widely available in most health stores and pharmacies. In general, this product and other oral electrolyte solutions are recommended in case of diarrhea and other conditions that may cause dehydration. It's also a good choice for athletes and active individuals who may lose water and electrolytes during intense exercise.

These nutrients are available in tablet form, too. You've probably seen those bottles containing effervescent tablets in different flavors. Just dissolve them in water, and you'll get a refreshing, healthy drink that keeps you hydrated and balances your electrolyte levels.

Whether you prefer electrolyte powder or tablets, it's important to note that their quality and composition vary among brands. Ideally, choose a formula with no added sugars. If you're sensitive to stimulants, look for caffeine-free electrolyte powders and tablets. Some of these products are designed for athletes and tend to be higher in electrolytes.

Use All Natural Ingredients

Some foods, such as citrus fruits, are naturally rich in electrolytes and can be mixed with water. Lemon juice electrolytes, for instance, include calcium, potassium, magnesium and small traces of sodium. Orange juice is slightly higher in calcium and magnesium. Grapefruit juice is the highest in calcium.

Mix a half cup of fresh citrus juice with one or two cups of water. Add a pinch of salt to get more sodium in your diet. Sea salt, for example, provides 590 milligrams of sodium per quarter teaspoon. The American Heart Association recommends 1,500 to 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day. Too much of this mineral may increase your blood pressure and cause fluid retention, so consume it in moderation.

The experts at Arizona State University have shared a few recipes for homemade electrolyte water. They recommend using natural ingredients, such as:

  • Coconut water
  • Lime juice
  • Pomegranate juice
  • Grated ginger

For example, you can mix three cups of mineral water, the juice from one lemon, a quarter teaspoon of salt, two tablespoons of agave nectar and grated ginger. Combine all ingredients in a jar, stir well and enjoy. If you're on a diet or trying to cut down on sugar, replace agave nectar with stevia, a natural sweetener.

You may also add coconut water to the mix. A half-cup boasts 7 percent of the daily recommended intake of magnesium, 6.5 percent of the daily recommended potassium intake and 2 percent of the daily recommended amount of calcium. It also delivers 126 milligrams of sodium — that's about 5.5 percent of the daily recommended allowance. Just make sure you choose a brand with no sugar and artificial flavors.

How to add vitamins to water Minerals can easily and cheaply be added to any water, including distilled and reverse osmosis water

Reverse Osmosis water also known as RO water is among the cleanest types of water you can drink. Scientifically slightly less pure than distilled water but for all practical purposes it’s virtually the same thing. Clean, pure, water comes with a tradeoff: the removal of everything, including the good stuff, like minerals. It’s natural that after stripping everything from the water some people want to add minerals back into it. For everything about the minerals themselves, please read How to Add Minerals to RO Water. Here will concentrate on how to actually add the minerals once you already have them in your possession.

The first thing to consider is that most mineral supplements for water are designed to be mixed in large quantities of water (usually one gallon, or about 4 liters). That means you can’t really just turn on the faucet, fill up your glass, and add a drop of minerals concentrate.

If you do, the first thing you’ll notice is a very strong (unpleasant) taste, not just salty (even if most brands of minerals concentrate contain low sodium), but you may also detect too strong of a taste (some people have described it as metallic, while other people say it tastes grainy).

There could also be some serious health problems if you drink too many minerals. The mineral brands available in the market are designed specifically to be soluble over several liters of water; depending on the brand, it could be anywhere between 1 and 8 drops per gallon. One gallon is 16 glasses of water. So, if you put one drop into one glass you’re taking about 16 times the recommended amount. If you’re working out and sweating profusely, then that’s probably not a problem to drink it but if you’re just going about your day and you take consistently 16 times the recommended dosage, that could be harmful. Look, even broccoli in high dosage is bad for you… everything good in life is supposed to be taken with measure.

Another thing to understand is that you can’t just add minerals to RO water and expect it to be ready to be consumed the second you pour those minerals, it’s not exactly coolaid. There’s a waiting period where the minerals need to be allowed to be dissolved into the water.

So, the solution is to fill up at least one gallon in a jug, and put the minerals in the jug. Then let it rest for 30 minutes or so. It’s best if you do Not put the water jug in the fridge prior to adding the minerals otherwise it will take longer for them to dissolve in the water. The warmer the water, the faster the minerals will mix with the liquid. After that, you can enjoy it anyway you like: either leave it out and drink it at room temperature or put it in the fridge to let it cool and enjoy it cold. By the way, you’re not forced to just drink the water as is. You can treat RO water like any other water; make coffee, tea, etc, etc.

(note : Most vitamins are water-soluble, but to get the fibre you have to actually eat the fruits)

1) The classical : lemon/cucumber vitamin water.

Mix in a pitcher: 10 cups of water + 1 cucumber and a lemon, thinly sliced ​+ 1/4 cup fresh finely chopped basil leaf + 1/3 of finely chopped fresh mint leaves. Leave in the refrigerator overnight before serving.

2) The granite : Strawberry/Lime vitamin water.

Mix in a pitcher : 10 cups of water + 6 strawberries and one thinly sliced lime + 12 finely chopped fresh mint leaves. Leave in the refrigerator overnight before serving.

3) The digestive : Fennel/citrus vitamin water.

First: infuse 1 to 3 grams of dried and crushed fennel seeds in 150 ml of boiling water for 5-10 minutes. Allow to cool.

Mix in a pitcher: 10 cups of water + lemon juice (put the leftover lemon in the mix) + a small thinly sliced orange ​​+ 12 fresh chopped mint leaves + the infusion of fennel seeds. Leave in refrigerator overnight before serving.

4) The antiOX : Blackberry/Sage vitamin water.

Note that a part from the berries, sage leafs is the herb that has the highest antioxidant content.

Mix in a pitcher : 10 cups of water + 1 cup of blackberries that have been very slightly crushed + 3-4 sage leaves. Leave in refrigerator overnight before serving.

6) The exotic : Pineapple/Mint vitamin water.

Mix in a pitcher : 10 cups of water + 1 cup of pineapple cut into cubes + 12 fresh mint leaves finely chopped. Leave in the refrigerator overnight before serving.

7) The traditional : Appel/cinnamon vitamin water.

Mix in a pitcher : 10 cups of water + 1 cup of apple cut into cubes + 2 cinnamon sticks + 2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Leave in the refrigerator overnight before serving.

8.) The zingibir : Ginger/tea vitamin water.

In advance: heat 1 teaspoon of ginger in two cups of tea, let it cool down.

has anyone heard of ornithon. i realise lots of u guys are in the states or in the uk and this may be sold under a different brand name..its added to water..helps hens breeding etc..good tonic for all supposedly

a petstore recommended i add some probiotic to water..its meant to be a good pick me up for ailing birds.

where did i read that it wasnt necessary to add vitamins to water..that they just evaporate anyway. probably here lol

the breeder/ judge of budgies uses ornithon..kinda looks like it turns the water yellow..she uses bottles not dishes

any of ur own avian vets recommend adding anything to water?

Ornithin can be put in almost any animal’s water; there may or may not be any benefit but there are no clinical evidence of either. I think it may be a waste of money for the amount you would use with all the changing of the water. For the reasons Lovebirdfan stated, I wouldn’t bother.

see . this information came from a breeder. not just any old breeder . she is a judge of budgies and i visited her awesome set up a little while ago.

u know these people..they have huge stock of birds and theyre in it for the prize and so they take great care of their birds nutritionally and yet dont want to waste their money either..
she recycles heaps of stuff..shes really environmental thats why i thought id put it to u guys..
i am so lucky that i have met so many great bird people thru both the nsw budgerigar society and the parrot society of nsw.
every person ..and there must be at least twenty by now ..that i have spoken to on the phone and aboutfive i have visited
i know the petshops push their merchandise but its strange that a breeder should

We always prefer to have food or drinks free from contamination and harmful chemicals. Therefore, it is even more of a concern when it comes to our drinking water.

Chlorine and chloramines are added to the water supply by the companies providing water to protect it from contamination. To neutralize the chlorine and chloramines, Vitamin C is used.

Drinking water passes through a filter which helps it get rid of neutralizing chlorine and chloramines. Chlorine and chloramines present in our bathwater significantly affect our skin.

It is necessary for the bathwater also to be neutralized but in a different way. Since bathwater cannot be filtered, it should be neutralized with hot and quick running water.

How Should We Begin?

The aim is to give an instructional overview for sanitary engineers focusing on neutralizing chlorine from water using Vitamin C. Sanitary engineers uses different techniques to disinfect the water bodies.

State regulatory agencies issue a license to these operators before any modified or treated water is dispersed in a navigable water stream.

Sanitary engineers need to make sure that they neutralize the chlorinated water before dispersing them into rivers and other water bodies. A small amount of chlorine is harmful to the small and beneficial aquatic creatures living in water bodies.

Methods for dechlorination

Water for bathing and showering

Using Vitamin C is the best way to purify the bathwater, which was chlorine and chloramine-treated. Chloramines are defined as the collection of chemical compounds that keep chlorine and ammonia. During chlorination, the phenomena of ammonia emission can cause copper and lead to corrosion.

Add Vitamin C to reduce the harmful effects of chlorination

Adding Vitamin C to chlorine and chloramine-treated water can reduce its harmful properties and enhance its taste. Having a Vitamin C supplement half an hour before consuming a chlorinated drink can decrease chlorine’s taste in it.

It is an excellent idea to carry a Vitamin C supplement with you before you head outside to eat in a restaurant. It can also work as the best energy supplement besides protein bars for you.

Chemical dechlorination v/s Passive dechlorination

It is advisable to use passive dechlorination rather than chemical dechlorination to neutralize chlorine contamination. There are many ways to dechlorinate a water body passively. Sanitary engineers can separate and hold water in a tank or a pond till the chlorine disappears by air and sunlight to neutralize chlorine in a slow and steady process.

Sanitary engineers may release chlorinated water to the ditch or a street surface to clean if they want. They must ensure that it does not enter a stream or a pond used by people before the chlorine in the water is neutralized.

For pond and aquariums

Care-takers of aquariums and ponds often use Vitamin C to purify and neutralize chlorine. Vitamin C is a little acidic, so you might want to keep a check on the water’s pH level. The amount of Vitamin C, which is ideal to use, is about a teaspoon full or Vitamin C supplement capsules known as weights can also be used. If you are not sure about such a small amount of Vitamin C’s effectiveness, you can always add a little more.

Chemical Methods

Chemical procedures for dechlorination are considered to be more effective than passive procedures. Chemical procedures like water heaters use sulfur-based chemicals to dechlorinate the water.

Sulfur-based chemicals are toxic, and it decreases the percentage of oxygen present in the water. Reduce the percentage of oxygen in the water of streams and lakes can be very hazardous.

Dechlorination of bathing water with Vitamin C

Vitamin C is also known as ascorbic acid, as it is mildly acidic. Because of its acidic nature, the pH level might rise a bit in the water.

For a long time, the acid can be used as a dechlorinating agent for laboratory analysis for reserving chlorinated and Chloramination samples of water.

American Water Works Association (AWWA) has added Vitamin C in the standard AWWA, 2005b. Adding Vitamin C is now one of the official ways of dechlorinating water bodies and disinfecting them.

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) and other utility organizations use Vitamin C to dechlorinate before the contaminated water is dispersed.

There is no National Science Foundation (NSF) International certification that advises using devices having or using Vitamin C. Effervescent Vitamin C bath bombs or a shower attachment having Vitamin C coated shower-head can be brought to purify chlorine-contaminated bathing water.

Some people like to remove chlorine and chloramines and purify bathing water to protect their skin while bathing.

To benefit universal public health, it is necessary to remove chlorine and chloramine from water through different methods.
