How to add transitions in imovie

How to add transitions in imovie

A transition in iMovie is what you see when going from one clip to the next. For instance, you can fade out and then fade into the next clip or use a dissolve effect between your scenes. Transitions offer a smooth way to move between your movie clips.

You can add transitions automatically or manually (Mac), edit them to be longer or shorter, and delete them if you change your mind. This tutorial walks you through how to add, edit, and delete iMovie Transitions on Mac and iOS.

Working with Transitions on Mac

Adding transitions automatically

Open your project for editing in iMovie on your Mac and then do the following to insert transitions automatically.

1) Click Settings in the right corner of the Timeline.

2) Check the box for Automatic content.

How to add transitions in imovie

As Apple mentions on the support page for adding transitions automatically:

If you have applied a theme to your movie, iMovie inserts standard cross-dissolve transitions between clips, with occasional transitions based on the theme. Not every space between clips gets a transition.

If you only want standard, non-themed transitions, you’ll need to remove your theme and uncheck that box. Just keep in mind that if you already picked a theme, this will remove all theme elements.

1) Click Settings in the right corner of the Timeline.

2) Click the Theme box, select No Theme, and click Change.

3) Uncheck the box for Automatic content.

How to add transitions in imovie

Adding transitions manually

In order to add transitions manually, you’ll need to make sure the box for Automatic content, as described above, is unchecked. If you don’t uncheck the box, you’ll be prompted to do so before adding a Transition yourself. Then, you can add your own transitions using the steps below.

1) Select Transitions in the iMovie browser. To preview a Transition, just move your cursor over the Transition from left to right. You’ll see its preview to the right.

2) You can add a transition between clips or to the beginning and end of a clip:

  • To add a Transition between clips, click and drag one to your movie Timeline in the spot you want it.
  • To add a Transition to the beginning and end of a single clip, select the clip in your Timeline and then double-click the Transition you want.

Editing transitions

You can edit the length of a Transition as well as set a default length. For Transitions you add manually, the default length is one half of a second. For automatic Transitions that are applied with a theme, the default length is two seconds.

Edit the length of a Transition

1) Double-click the Transition in the Timeline.

2) Enter the number of seconds in the Duration box.

3) Click Apply.

How to add transitions in imovie

Change the default length of all Transitions

1) Click iMovie > Preferences from the menu bar.

2) Next to Transitions, enter the number of seconds for the duration.

How to add transitions in imovie

Remember, this will be the number of seconds applied to all Transitions you add to your Timeline moving forward.

Deleting transitions

If you decide that you want to remove a Transition, it’s super easy. Just click the Transition in your Timeline, which will highlight it, and then hit your Delete key.

Working with Transitions on iOS

Adding transitions

Transitions work a little differently in iMovie on iOS than they do on Mac. By default, the app will automatically add Transitions as you add clips. This is handy because you don’t have to do it yourself and you can still make changes or delete a Transition quickly.

Editing transitions

You can edit the type of Transition you pick along with the duration easily on iOS.

1) Tap the Transition in the Timeline.

2) Select a different Transition when the options pop up at the bottom. You can tap Dissolve, Slide, Wipe, or Fade. You can also tap Theme to use one that comes with a theme you pick.

3) Below the Transition types, you can choose a duration from 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 seconds by just tapping the one you want.

Deleting transitions

To remove a Transition on iPhone or iPad, tap the Transition in the Timeline. Like on Mac, the Transition will be highlighted. When the Transition types appear, tap None.

Wrapping it up

Using Transitions is an ideal way to ensure a smooth “transition” from one clip, or scene in your movie, to the next. They really do add to the experience when viewing a movie.

How to add transitions in imovie

You can add transitions between clips to smooth or blend the change from one scene to another. You can have a clip fade in or out, dissolve into another clip, zoom in to another clip, and so on.

You can add transitions to your project manually, choosing which effects to add between which clips. Or, you can set iMovie to add transitions automatically.

By default, iMovie makes all the transitions in your movie the same length. Standard transitions are one-half of a second long and theme-styled transitions (which are available only if you’ve applied a theme to your project) are two seconds long. You can change these default settings in iMovie preferences, and you can adjust the duration of each transition individually after you add it to your project.

Note: Because no transition can be longer than half the length of the clip on either side of it, the transitions in your project may be shorter than the default, depending on the length of the shortest clip adjacent to the effect.

To add transitions between clips manually:

With your project open in the Project browser, click the Transition button in the iMovie toolbar, or choose Window > Transitions.

The Transitions browser opens, showing all the transitions available. If a theme is set for your project, a group of theme-styled transitions appears above the standard transitions.

To preview the transitions, let the pointer hover over each one in the Transitions browser.

Select a transition by clicking it once, and then drag it between two adjacent clips in the Project browser.

The transition is represented by a transition icon in the Project browser. (Several icon styles are shown below.) The exact appearance of the icon depends on which transition type you added.

To add transitions between clips automatically:

You can set iMovie to automatically insert transitions in your project. When you do so, iMovie adds a transition almost every time you add a new clip to your project. If you have a theme applied to your project, iMovie adds some theme-styled transitions and some standard effects. If you already have some transitions in your project, iMovie replaces them with new ones.

To include transitions styled after a theme, select a theme by clicking it once, and then select the “Automatically add transitions and titles” checkbox.

iMovie inserts standard cross-dissolve transitions between clips, with occasional transitions based on the theme. Not every space between clips gets a transition.

iMovie also adds a theme-styled opening title over the first clip and an end title over the last.

To include only standard, non-themed transitions in your project, click No Theme, select the “Automatically add” checkbox, and then choose a transition style from the pop-up menu.

Note: If you already have a theme applied to your project and select No Theme, all theme elements are removed from the project.

With automatic transitions turned on, you can double-click any transition in a project and change its duration in the inspector that opens. Simply type a new duration in the Duration field, and indicate whether you want it to apply to all the transitions in the project.

To set how much transitions overlap with adjacent clips:

All – Maintain Clip Range: The two clips are made to overlap by the length of the transition, and the transition is placed over the overlapping region. In this case, no additional content from clip ends is added. The total duration of your project decreases by the length of the transition.

Half – Maintain Project Duration: The transition is placed so that it spans the clips; one half of the transition overlaps each clip. In this case, additional content from the end of each clip is added to fill out the transition. The total duration of your project remains the same.

To change the overlap setting for a specific transition, double-click any non-themed transition icon in your project. In the inspector that opens, choose an option from the Overlap pop-up menu.

this and every tutorial video thing i’ve found suggests there are only two choices: individually drag a transition icon between every clip for every cut, or have it change ALL the transitions in your entire video.

i just want to be able to select, say, 14 clips and tell iMovie “put a cross-fade between all of these clips.” not the entire movie, not one by one, just the ones i’ve selected. seems reasonable.

is this possible?

thanks for any help.

How To Add Edit And Delete Imovie Transitions On Mac And Ios

By default, iMovie makes all the transitions in your movie the same length. Standard transitions are one-half of a second long and theme-styled transitions (which are available only if you have set a theme for your project) are two seconds long. However, you can set the duration for each transition in your project individually, or you can change the default duration of transitions in your project so that when you add them, they’re already the desired length.

You can also set how much transitions overlap with the clips they’re adjacent to. This setting affects your project’s duration.

To change the duration of individual transitions in a project:

In the Project browser, double-click the transition icon. (There are many styles of transition icons; several are shown below.)

In the inspector that opens, type the number of seconds you want the transition to last.

If iMovie is set to display timecode values for project clips, type the duration using the following convention: HH:MM:SS:Frames (hours, minutes, seconds, frames).

If you want this duration to apply to all transitions you’ve already added to the project and all those you add later, select “Applies to all transitions.”

To change the default duration of transitions in a project:

With your project open, choose File > Project Properties.

The File menu appears in a light gray bar across the top of your computer screen.

Move the Transition Duration slider to set the length, in seconds, of non-themed transitions.

Move the Theme Transition Duration slider to set the length, in seconds, of theme-styled transitions.

If this slider is white and can’t be moved, it means your project has no theme.

“Applies to all transitions,” if you want the settings to apply to all transitions, including all transitions you’ve already added and all those you add from now on.

How to add transitions in iMovie

  1. Go to the menu bar on the upper left corner of your window and select Transitions.
  2. Choose the transition you like and drag it over to the vertical bar you can find between your clips.
  3. Review the clips you’ve applied the transitions to.

How to fix a jump cut (the 30% rule cut)

A jump cut is where part of the video is removed, but the background doesn’t change – only the speaker moves. It looks like the speaker jumps forward in time. These can be used to add a frenetic feel to your videos, but most editors try to avoid them.

  1. Click on a spot on your clip where you need to remove something.
  2. Right click on that spot and select Split Clip.
  3. Once the clip has been split, you can hover your mouse over the side of the clips. Click and drag to trim the clip further.
  4. Now choose one of the clips so it is highlighted in yellow and put the playhead over this clip.
  5. In the viewer, click the crop icon, then choose “crop to fill” and move the edges of the frame to zoom in.
  6. Click outside the viewer and play your video

Using transitions in an iMovie project adds polish and often smoothes juxtapositions between clips—for example, a long Fade to Black transition can indicate the passage of time. iMovie ’11 offers 24 built-in transitions, and what seems like nearly as many ways to add and edit them to improve your movies.

Step 1: Add a transition

Drag the transition icon of your choice from iMovie’s transition browser to the spot where you want the transition to appear.

When you create a new project, you can choose to automatically add a transition style of your choice, which puts a transition between every clip. However, I prefer to ignore this option, start clean, and add transitions as I go. If you change your mind, you can choose File -> Project Theme (or press Command-Shift-J) and enable the “Automatically add [name of transition]” option; or, if you applied a theme to the project, enable the “Automatically add transitions and titles” option.

To add a single transition, show the Transitions browser by clicking its button in the toolbar, or pressing Command-4. Position your mouse pointer over a transition icon to preview its effect. Then, drag an icon from the browser to the spot in your project where you want the transition to appear.

Step 2: Edit the transition duration

By default, a transition lasts half a second, but you can change that. Double-click a transition icon in your project to bring up the Inspector. In the Duration field, enter the number of seconds (as little as 0.1s, or 0:05—or five frames—if you’ve chosen to use timecode notation in iMovie’s preferences). Press the Return key to apply the change; that lets you preview the timing before dismissing the Inspector. When you’re satisfied with the change, click Done.

How to add transitions in imovieTo ensure you’re editing just the selected transition, make sure the “Applies to all transitions” box is unchecked.

If the transition ends up shorter than you specified, check to see if its duration appears in yellow text when you position your mouse pointer over it; that indicates there isn’t enough source footage in one of the clips for the transition to use. Give the clip more padding around the edit point using the Clip Trimmer or Precision Editor; or, if the source clip is just too short, consider replacing it with a longer clip.

What if you prefer longer transitions by default? Choose File -> Project Properties (Command-J) and adjust the Transition Duration slider; click the “Applies when added to project” radio button to make the change stick for all new transitions.

Step 3: Fine-tune a transition

You can drag the edges of the transition to adjust its duration.

When you want more control over how a transition appears, entering time values isn’t good enough. Click the action menu (with the gear icon) that appears below the transition’s icon when you hover over it and choose Precision Editor.

Drag the preceding clip (which appears above the transition) or the following clip (which appears below) to specify which sections of the clips are being used by the transition. You can also drag the edges of the transition to adjust its duration. Click Done to exit the Precision Editor.

Step 4: Change a transition style

When you click the Transition button, a pop-up pane appears with the rest of iMovie’s transition choices.

Are you looking for something more dramatic than the Cross Dissolve transition? Choose from iMovie’s styles using a couple of techniques.

Bring up the Inspector by double-clicking a transition and then click the Transition button that lists the current style. A pop-up pane appears with thumbnails of alternatives. When you move your mouse pointer across any of the icons, you’re given a preview of how the transition will appear using your footage, both within the thumbnail and in the viewer. Click a style to apply it.

Another option is to drag an icon from the Transitions Browser onto the top of the transition you want to change. One advantage to this method is that you’re given two options when you release the mouse button. Replace changes the selected transition style with the one you dragged. But if you’ve decided you’d rather stick to one style for all transitions, choose Replace All.

How to add transitions in imovieIf you drag and drop an alternate transition on top of an existing one, you are given the option to replace that one or replace all your transitions with your current choice.

Transitions can be a powerful component of your narrative. Using them well adds depth and quality to your video.
