How to add subtitles to a movie

If you’re a movie lover, you’ve probably seen an SRT file. These small files contain subtitles for your favorite series and feature films. However, you may face a problem when trying to play a video alongside an SRT file, as many players and mobile devices don’t support external subtitle files.

SRT is a format of SubRip subtitle files. They contain information about the subtitles of the video, such as the timecode for the start and end of the text and the sequence number of the subtitles. SRT files are text files; they don’t contain video or audio data.

Watching films with subtitles may be useful in a lot of situations. Below, we listed three of them, though there are definitely more.

Here are some other reasons you may need subtitles for a movie.

Want to learn a foreign language?

Subtitles can help when you’re learning a foreign language. It’s the perfect tool to not only practice your listening skills and expand vocabulary, but also to understand the culture and traditions of a country.

Movie isn’t dubbed yet

Imagine the situation: you want to watch a movie, but it’s available only in English and hasn’t yet been dubbed into your native language. What do you do? Subtitles can help! Just find appropriate subtitles on the internet, merge them with the target movie, and enjoy.

Want to hear real voices of favorite actors?

Some people consider dubbed movies less authentic than the originals, so you may choose subtitles over dubbing since it definitely helps you to understand the actors’ emotions better.

How to add subtitles to a movie

SRT or SubRip is a file format, containing optical text characters mostly associated with movies, video, clips and more. In layman’s term, SRT simply means subtitle. They are the text characters you commonly see on movies, TV shows, web clips, video demonstrations, tutorials, presentations and all others.

SRT is not only useful for hearing impaired individuals but also for English and non-English people. If you are a non-English person and want to watch foreign movies in your own local language, searching the internet will get you very few or no results at all. The same thing happens to English-accustomed viewers who wish to see Asian, European, African, Russian or even Latin shows. Additionally, movies with unclear dubbings are hard to understand without subtitles. The solution for this is to find a matching subtitle and add SRT to AVI.

Discovering or Making an SRT File

If you find the perfect subtitle to your movie, it is very easy to load it on your video. All you need to do is to rename the SRT file using the video’s file name and your media player will load it automatically. For example, if your movie or video has a file name of “Amazing nature.avi”, your subtitle should be renamed as “Amazing nature.srt”.

On the other hand, if you are unable to find SRT file matches your video clips, you can still make your own subtitle. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open WordPad, Notepad or any text editor you have on your PC.
  2. Create your own subtitle and make sure it has the following components:
    • Number which indicates the sequence
    • Time that the subtitle should appear and disappear
    • Text subtitle
    • Blank line to denote the start of new subtitle

Remember to rename the file the same as the title of your video, this will allow your media player to locate and load the file automatically. Alternatively for users who want to hardcode or merge SRT with AVI, you must use special tools or software.

Looking for fresh ideas for your next movie night? Watching foreign films might work! You’ll expand your viewpoints. The scenes, acting, themes… Everything is different. From Japanese to European to South American; there’s a broad range of movies to explore.

The only question is: how will you understand them? Dubbed films are a solution, but not the perfect one. We recommend true movie fans to download subtitles in their native language, while watching the movie in its original format. That’s a simple and quick process!

How to Add Subtitles to Movies

Download the Subtitle File

First, you’ll need a .srt file for the movie’s subtitles. You can check several services, including Subtitle Seeker and English-Subtitles.org. Search by the movie’s title. You’ll see subtitle files for the same movie in different formats: .mp4, .avi, or .mov. Check the movie’s file type, and download a subtitle file that works for it. Otherwise, the text won’t be synchronized with the movie’s audio.

Place Both Files in a Single Folder

Now, you need to put the subtitle file in the movie’s folder. If you don’t already have a folder for the movie, then create one and name it accordingly.

This is a necessary step, as most video players won’t find the subtitle file unless it’s in the same folder.

Rename the Subtitle File

This isn’t a necessary thing to do for all video players, but it’s a simple step and it’s better to do it, just to stay on the safe side. Most players will automatically add the subtitle if it has the same name as the movie file.

For example, if the movie’s title is braveheart.mp4, then you should name the subtitle file braveheart.srt.

Play the Movie and Add the Subtitles

Now, it’s time to play the video file with your chosen player. If you don’t know what software to use, VLC is a safe and popular choice.

Once the movie starts playing, go to Subtitle > Sub Track. If the files are in the same folder, the player will show the subtitles you can add. Choose them, and you can start watching.

Sync the Subtitles

You’re all set to watch the film. The popcorn is ready, you get comfy on the sofa, you even hug your partner and play the file. As the conversation starts, you notice that the subtitles are off! This is frustrating, but it shouldn’t be a deal-breaker. You can still have your movie night.

The subtitles can be adjusted in almost all video players. If you use VLC, you can press H to delay or G to speed up the subtitle file. With each press of the key, you’ll adjust the subtitles by 50 milliseconds. Keep doing this until you notice that the audio and text are in a perfect sync. Finally, you’re ready to relax and watch the film!

Reasons to Choose Subtitles Instead of Dubbed Movies

If you’re used to watching foreign movies that are dubbed in your language, you might be wondering: why should you bother with subtitles in the first place? There are several reasons to switch to this method:

You’ll Have More Options for Films to Watch

Not all movies have been dubbed in your language. Dubbing is a complex process that requires actors, studios, and an entire production. If you want to watch a new release or something not that popular, you’ll end up disappointed.

Subtitles, on the other hand, are easier to make. They are available for almost any movie you can think of.

You See the Genuine Acting

Although you can see the acting in dubbed movies, the voice-over takes away a lot! No matter how professional it is, it still suppresses the real emotions of the actors. Truth be told, sometimes dubbing can be downright BAD. Cheap dubbing production will ruin the film for you.

With subtitles, you’ll have to make an effort to read. But at least you’ll enjoy the actors’ real performance. As for the reading part, your eyes and brain will get used to it. It is possible to watch and read at the same time.

Subtitles Help with Language Learning

If you’re trying to learn a foreign language, watching subtitled movies is a great strategy! You’ll listen to proper dialogues while reading the translation at the same time. Without much effort, you’ll be memorizing new words and phrases.

Go ahead; choose a foreign film and add subtitles to it. Fun times are guaranteed for your movie night!

Not sure if you posted this in the right section, but w/e.

It’s pretty easy, just copy the title of the movie you’ve download, go to google, paste, add "subs" or "subtitles" and search. Most likely this first hit will be okay.
Download the subtitle, which is a .srt file most of the time (sometimes a .sub)
Make sure the name of your movie has the exact same name as your subtitle file.
Example movie: AwesomeMovie.mkv, subs: AwesomeMovie.srt
You also need to put your subtitles in the same directory as your movie.

Now, I don’t know if you’re going to connect your tv to your pc, or going to play it on your pc from a usb device.
In the first case, download VLC (VideoLAN) and use that to play your movie.
In the second case, just put both movie and subs on a usb storage device (make sure they’re in the same directory), plug it in to your tv, and play.

Do you have a "sub" button on your remote? If so you’ll have to push it
If that’s not the case, maybe your tv doesn’t support the subtitle file.
Is it .srt or .sub?
And what tv do you have?

Subtitles are necessary when you are watching a movie in a foreign language. If you are new to English or learning any other language then using subtitles in your movie file is a great way to increase your vocabulary. In this post, I am going to show you how you can add subtitles to your movies easily.

No matter what language you speak, everyone enjoys watching movies. The problem is that most movies do not have the budget to afford translation into multiple languages.

When I started watching movies on the Internet in foreign languages I had difficulty finding suitable subtitles. However, now it becomes easier to find accurate subtitles for any movie.

There are a lot of reasons to add subtitles to a video:

  • They make the video accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • They make it easier to track and understand the lyrics if it’s a music video
  • They offer an alternative to posting lyrics alongside the video of a music video
  • They provide the opportunity to translate your video into any language

How to Add Subtitles in Your Movie on an Android Device?

If you are using an Android device then you can use VLC Player for Android and MX Player to play files which have subtitles. However, if your movie or tv show file doesn’t have any subtitles then you can easily add them. Here’s how you can do it:

Add Subtitles to a Movie by Using VLC for Android:

    1. Play any video file that you want to have subtitles.
    2. Tap on the screen to bring up the on-screen buttons (if it is not showing already).

How to Add Subtitles Manually on an Android Device, PC, or Mac?

It’s pretty easy, just copy the title of the movie you’ve downloaded, go to google, paste the movie title and add “subs” or “subtitles” at the end, and hit enter.

      1. Click on any of the 1st three search results.
      2. Download the subtitle, which is a .srt file most of the time (sometimes it could be a .sub file)
      3. Make sure the name of your movie has the exact name as your subtitle file.
      4. Example movie: AwesomeMovie.mkv, subs: AwesomeMovie.srt
      5. You also need to put your subtitles in the same directory as your movie. Let’s suppose your movie file is in the folder “Movie Name” then you must add subtitle file in the same folder.

Websites to Download Subtitles for Movies and TV Shows

before you can turn on subtitles for a video, you’ll need to find and download a subtitle file that has been synced properly with that particular video file. If you downloaded a movie off of a torrent site then some torrent uploaders add subtitles within the torrent. However, if your movie doesn’t have a subtitle then you can download them by using any of these websites.

When looking for subtitles, we only recommend these two sites:

Subscene — My personal favorite. Unless the movie or TV show you’re trying to watch is underground or decades-old, it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll find subtitles that work. Subtitles are categorized by title, language, and whether or not they include hearing-impaired cues.

OpenSubtitles — This database is pretty big and the subtitles do work, and you’ll even find some that can’t be found on Subscene, but beware that this site has a lot of ads. Grabbing subtitles here can feel like a game of elimination as you try to figure out which download links are the right ones.

Let me know in the comments which of these methods you use to add subtitles to your movies. Check out this tutorial on how to download music from SoundCloud to an Android phone.

Regardless of whether you are watching a movie in your native tongue or not, subtitles do come in handy most of the time. Scenes could be loud, accents could be strange and you could end up missing an important part of the dialogue.

How to add subtitles to a movie

With that in mind, it is a good idea to get subtitles for the movie or TV show that you are watching. But how and where can you find them? Let’s dig in.

Getting and Playing Subtitles for Downloaded Movies and TV Shows

Before we begin, you need to know that downloading movies and TV shows via torrent or similar sites is illegal in some countries. This can potentially get you in trouble, so it’s best to check your country’s laws and regulations regarding movie and TV show downloading.

Let’s check how you can add subtitles to your downloaded movies and TV shows. This has a bit more work to it, but it isn’t that hard overall.

Let’s assume that you have already downloaded the movie that you want to watch. What’s important here is to check its file name.

The name most likely contains certain marks that we need in order to find the appropriate subtitle file faster. Those marks include the resolution, the name (nickname) of the person that you have downloaded the movie from, and some potential special characters.

After you have checked the file’s name, visit some of the websites that offer free subtitles. The Open Subtitles is one of the most popular websites of this sort. If you don’t like the Open Subtitles’ user-interface, you can visit Subscene.

Once on a subtitle website, type the name of the movie that you downloaded in the website’s search bar. You will likely get many options for the same movie. Here’s where the previous part, the file’s name, comes into play.

How to add subtitles to a movie

We have searched for the Amazing Spider-Man movie for this tutorial’s purposes.
