How to add mods to minecraft

Installing Minecraft mods opens your game to a world of endless possibilities. But how do you install Minecraft mods? What even is Minecraft Forge? This guide will answer all these questions and more, so you can run the best Minecraft mods in no time.

Before we jump into the action, it’s worth thinking about the different types of mods available. Do you want a new skin pack to freshen things up? Got a super PC? Why not grab some killer lighting and realistic water mods? Bored with pigs oinking on the ground? With mods, you could make them fly! Why you’d want to do that, we’ve no idea, but hey, more options are always a good thing.

Want to make your copy of Minecraft even greater? Then read on for our simple steps on how to install Minecraft mods.

1. How to download Minecraft Forge

This is the most important part of installing Minecraft mods. Mods won’t work in the normal Minecraft, so we need a special version that’s designed for modding.

Head on over to the Minecraft Forge website and download the version of Forge that’s compatible with your chosen mods.

If the mod you’ve got is for version 1.15.2, then download Forge version 1.15.2.

If you’re on Chrome, it may say Forge is a virus. Feel free to ignore that, though. Just click on the Java file once it’s downloaded and install it.

2. Using different Forge versions

If, say, your chosen mod is for version 1.12, you’ll need to manually add it to Minecraft after downloading and installing it.

To do this, open the Minecraft launcher and click on ‘installations’. Next click on ‘new’ and there should be a drop down box, which once clicked, shows not only all the previous different iterations of Minecraft, but also your Forge versions you’ve downloaded.

Click on the Forge you want and save it, then the launcher will download the corresponding version.

Then it’s just a case of heading back to the main screen with ‘play’ on, and to the left is another dropdown box where you can select the Forge version you want to play.

3. Finding your Minecraft mods folder

Load up Minecraft as you normally would. Once you hit the main title screen, the one where you create a new world or play around with options, there should be an option marked ‘mods’. Click on that.

Next, look for where it says ‘open mods folder’. You can access this through Windows Explorer, but our way is much, much easier.

4. Installing Minecraft mods

Close Minecraft while leaving your mods folder open. Now you’re going to want to venture forth to the internet and download the mod or mods you’re after. We’ll get into the safety of that in a second, but for now, just grab what you need and what you believe is safe.

Download the mods for your chosen versions of Minecraft and once they’re downloaded, move the files into the mods folder.

That’s it! Now you’re free to load up your Minecraft Forge version, click on mods, and check to see whether they’re active. Wasn’t that nice and easy?

5. Consider the mods source

OK, this isn’t a step as much as it is a general warning. Be very, very careful who you get your Minecraft mods from. Although there are several trusted sites out there, all it takes is one bad egg to upload a mod with some sort of virus attached.

The best way to check if something is safe is by reading the comments or checking out videos on YouTube uploaded from someone who isn’t the mod creator.

It’s also worth checking to see how well known the creator is. Do they have loads of followers who will vouch for them? Would a virus ruin their Minecraft career?

Always think before you hit download. No mod is worth wreaking havoc on your CPU because some clown wants to mine Bitcoin.

4) Now you need to open the folder with the player, you can go to this path: c:UsersИМЯ USERAppDataRoaming.minecraft (If you have not changed the default path), or may in the launcher click “Open folder”, thereby immediately find yourself in the right directory.

5) In it we find the folder “mods” (which is created automatically after you install any version of Forge) and go into it. Take the downloaded mod (which has the extension .jar or .zip and copy into the open mods folder.

Minecraft mods are a trendy way to add a plethora of new content to the game, with thousands of unique mods freely available online for download.

Whether it’s fast cars, rollercoasters, or even weapons of mass destruction, if it can be dreamed of, there’s likely a Minecraft mod for it out there somewhere.

Naturally, server admins might be curious how they can install such mods to be played on their Minecraft server. This guide will explain everything players need to know about installing mods on their Minecraft Server.

The easiest way to install a mod on a Minecraft Server

Remember: To join a Minecraft modded server, players will need to forge installed on the Minecraft client, which can be downloaded here.

Step 1

First, players need to ensure they have the latest version of the mod they want to install downloaded from CurseForge. Be sure to also download all relevant relations for the downloaded mod. These relationships can be found on the specific modpacks page under the “relations” tab.

Step 2

Players must now ensure that they have setup their server as a Minecraft forge server. The installer for the forge server can be found here.

Once launching the installer, players will want to click “Install server” on the main menu. After this, a jar file should be created, which can be double-clicked to launch.

Note: Players will first need to agree to the terms and conditions of Mojang by accepting the “eula.txt” file first to launch the server.

Those unsure of how to setup the server can refer to the helpful video below:

Step 3

Once this has been done, players can drag the mod file downloaded in step 1 into the newly generated “mods” folder. The server can now be restarted, and if all has been done correctly, the mod should be installed.

Step 4

Ensuring the server has been correctly port forwarded, other players can now join the server and enjoy the mod. If the mod does not appear to be functioning correctly, players should ensure that the correct relations were also installed, which can be found on the curseforge page belonging to the modpack.

Players should finally ensure they are using a mod that’s compatible with the version of Forge for Minecraft currently being used on the server.

Hello, people of the Internet! Today. I shall teach you how to install mods with the simple .jar file!

Step 1_____
First, find the download for your mod.(In the image, I am getting the Morph mod)

Step 2_____
Next, wait five seconds with the adfly screen and click the skip ad button.

Last Step______
Drag the .jar file from your Downloads folder(or where ever your downloads go)into your mods folder in .minecraft(can be found by clicking on the ‘Edit Profile’ button in the launcher, and then ‘Open Game Directory’.Note that with the Morph mod, you need iChunUtil and that I just installed it for this tutorial, as I do not know how to make that mod work.

Thats it! You are done! Hope this helped you guys! See ya next time!

The way you describe on how to install java mods, is wrong. the reason is because when you put the java file in the mod folder, it will just work as a basic mod until another one in another section in the ".minecraft" folder is beeing used. Here is what I mean:

1. Copy/cut the jar file, but don’t paste it yet
2. Open the versions folder and create a new folder whatever you would like to call it
3. Paste the jar file in the folder you just created
4. Copy the jar file in the folder again and paste it with a different name
5. Open the jar file in notepad, copy all the text and exit the file
6. Delete the copied file
7. Create a new file (most likely a txt file) and name it exactly as the jar file is called
8. Once written exactly as the jar file, save the file with that name as a .json file
9. Open the json file in notpad and paste the next you copied
10. Launch the launcher and select the mod you "made

10,5. If this didn’t work, do these steps
11. Open the versions folder and select a folder you don’t need (if the mod uses 1.7.10, you need to find a folder that runs the 1.7.10 minecraft version
12. Paste the jar file in the folde you selected and rename it exactly as the json file is called
13. Launch the launcher and select the version

If you can’t find the folder, go back to the versions folder, check after the last edited folder and rename it to whatever you want. I recommend to rename the files inside that folder exactly what the folder is called.

Minecraft players can customize their games using a plethora of add-ons or mods, depending on which version they’re playing.

Players on Bedrock Edition will primarily use add-ons, which can be purchased for real-world money in the marketplace. Players on Java Edition will use mods that they can dig around for, mostly at no cost.

Using add-ons in Minecraft Bedrock Edition

Those playing on the Bedrock edition on consoles or through Windows can grab add-ons directly through the marketplace. There are add-ons that come free with a Realms Plus subscription, with all other packs costing real-world money (via Minecraft Coins), which can be bought in the store directly.

Image: Mojang/Microsoft via Polygon

Keep in mind that some add-ons, like texture packs, can be applied directly to your existing Worlds or Realms, but some that change the nature of the game a lot will require you to make a new Realm or World. World packs, like Aquatic Life, will require making a new World for that add-on.

Using mods in Minecraft: Java Edition

Java Edition users of Minecraft will need Java installed. After doing that, you’ll need to download the version of Minecraft Forge that matches your server version. A full list of Minecraaft Forge versions can be found here. Double-click the .jar file that downloads to install Forge.

Java Edition mods can be found all over the place via websites like Curse Forge. Simply click “download” on the mod you want and move it into your mods folder.

The mods folder will be located on the drive you installed Minecraft on, in a folder you can find through clicking “users,” your Windows name, “App Data,” “Roaming,” and then “.minecraft.” If there’s no folder named “mods” in there, you can make one and just drop your downloaded mods in.

Image: Mojang/Microsoft via Polygon

To play with the mods you’ve installed, you’ll simply need to select “forge” from the list of available builds on the Minecraft Java Edition client.

How to add mods to minecraft

If you like “Minecraft,” but are getting tired of the game, you might want to check out mods.

Mods, short for “modifications,” are pieces of software that can change how “Minecraft” works. Some mods alter the rules of the time-space continuum. Some can change enemies into immensely powerful zombies. Combine a few mods, like introducing flags and custom weapons, and you can transform your game into a heated match of Capture the Flag with friends.

There are also resource packs (also known as texture packs), which change textures — the visual designs of every item in the game. These are great for making the game look different, but keeping the same gameplay.

Just note that mods and resource packs only work with the “Java Edition” of “Minecraft,” available for Mac, Windows, and Linux computers.

How to install ‘Minecraft’ mods

To use mods in Minecraft, you need to install Minecraft Forge, find the mods you want online, add your mods to “Minecraft,” and troubleshoot any problems that may arise. Here’s how to do it all.

Install Minecraft Forge

Before you can install “Minecraft” mods, you’ll need to install a free app called Minecraft Forge. Forge is a third-party program that lets you manage, install, enable, and delete any mod.

How to add mods to minecraft

You can download Minecraft Forge from the official website. Try to download the “Recommended” version, and make sure that the number in the left sidebar corresponds with the version of “Minecraft” that you have.

After you’ve downloaded and installed Forge, restart your computer, and open the Minecraft Launcher. You should see a new options menu — pick “Forge” from this menu and then press “Play.”

This will launch “Minecraft” with Forge enabled. If you’ve done it right, you’ll see a new menu titled “Mods” in the main menu.

Find the ‘Minecraft’ mods that you want

There are dozens of sites that offer “Minecraft” mods for free. Two of the most popular are and If you can’t find the mods you want there, you can always try searching for them on Google.

However, whatever source you use, do some research. Like all third-party downloads, you’ll want to dig a little to be sure the mod download is safe and won’t cripple your game with bugs — or do worse, like install malware .

Also make sure that any mod you download is compatible with the specific version of “Minecraft” that you’re running.

Both these sites have search features and comment sections, which let users report any issues they’ve had from a mod download.

Curseforge also lets you sort by and opt for mods that already have millions of downloads.

Add your mod to ‘Minecraft’

To see your mod in action, download the mod file you want, and then place it in a folder created by Forge called “mods.” If you can’t find this folder, save your downloaded mod file anywhere else that you can find it.

If “Minecraft” has an issue loading after one or more mods are installed, don’t freak out. Bugs and other problems will come with the territory, and usually for simple reasons.

Make sure that you copied over the right files, and that the mod you downloaded can work with your version of “Minecraft.”

“Minecraft” will show you an error log if it fails to load, which you can inspect to find which mod is causing the game to crash. Once you’ve found it, open the mods folder and remove the culprit mod, then restart and launch again.

How to install ‘Minecraft’ resource packs

You can also install resource packs to mix up your Minecraft universe. They won’t alter gameplay, but can change how blocks and buildings look, as well as add fun cosmetics, unique sounds, and alternative languages to the game.

You can find resource packs at familiar sources like, or other sites, like Here’s how to install one in your game:

  1. Download the desired resource pack, which you should get in the form of a .zip file, and copy the file. Don’t unzip the file, but copy it zipped.
  2. Open “Minecraft: Java Edition,” and click “Options,” then “Resource Packs.”

Select “Open Pack Folder” and copy-and-paste or drag-and-drop the zip file into the folder. If you don’t see the resource pack listed right away under “Available,” go ahead and restart “Minecraft.” It should appear.

Move the resource pack from “Available” to “Selected.”

How to turn resource packs on and off while playing

If you start playing and find the new resource pack distracting, or if you want to compare the altered textures to the originals, you can turn your resource packs on and off while playing.

Summary [ ]

This tutorial is meant for people who have Bedrock Edition on their Xbox One. This tutorial will cover installing addons on the Xbox One.

Required Tools [ ]

You will need the following programs to follow along with this tutorial:

MC Addons Manager for Xbox One [ ]

MC Addons Manager makes the management of your Minecraft Bedrock Edition addons easier.

Install it on the Xbox One.

File Downloader for Xbox One [ ]

Install it on the Xbox One.

My Files Explorer for Xbox One [ ]

Install it on the Xbox One.

Xbox app [ ]

Any program that can ZIP and UnZIP files [ ]

Any archiver will do. Some examples are 7z and WinRAR.a

Downloading the addons [ ]

First, download the addon on a computer. There are multiple file extensions of the mods.

If the mod is a .zip, open the archive. If the contents have a manifest.json, unzip the zip file into a folder. Zip the file again, and make sure that there is a single folder inside the zip, and the addon is inside the folder.

If the contents of the zip is a single folder, continue to the next step.

.mcpack [ ]

Change the file extension from .mcpack to .zip. Follow instructions in the .zip section.

.mcaddon [ ]

Change the file extension from .mcaddon to .zip. If the contents are two .mcpacks, unzip the file, and follow the instructions for .mcpack for each of the files. Remember to label the folders as resource or behavior.

If the contents are two folders, check if they are labeled as behavior and resource. If both are labeled, great! If they aren’t labeled, label them. Keep the file as a .zip and go to the next step.
