Since its launch in 2011, Snapchat users have been given lots of ways to spruce up their pictures and videos — between filters, Bitmojis, and stickers (just to name a few), the possibilities are endless.

One option also available to all users is adding GIFs. You can add short GIF stickers to any photo or video you send, which is a great way to make your shots pop.

Note, however, that you can’t send any GIF. You can only send GIFs that are in Snapchat’s GIPHY library. These tend to be very small, very short clip-art icons.

Here’s how to send GIFs on Snapchat, using either the iPhone or Android version of the app.

How To Update Snapchat

Should you need to update Snapchat because the thrill of posting GIFs on your face will not be lost on you, head to the App Store. There you can check for updates and get the latest version of Snapchat.

If that still doesn't work, try logging out and then back into Snapchat. You can find this option on the Settings section inside the Snapchat app.

A relatively new feature in Snapchat, having been first introduced in February 2018, is GIF support. These new animated stickers, straight from a partnership with Giphy, came to the app about a month after Instagram received GIF capabilities. If you’ve used Instagram’s version, adding GIFs to snaps is even more intuitive. While they were late to the game, they’re doing it better.

Snapchat has been trending towards GIF support ever since Lenses were first introduced, giving some real purpose to taking video snaps. But stickers that are animated will benefit both stationary and video snaps.

Because of the sheer amount of GIFs available on Giphy, it’s no surprise that Snapchat temporarily removed this feature just weeks after launching due to a controversial GIF slipping through the cracks, but it’s been back online ever since the start of April, and Snapchat worked with GIPHY to revamp its moderation system so it doesn’t happen again.

Adding a Giphy GIF to Your Snap

You add a GIF to your Snap in the exact same way you do so for a sticker. I’ll do a quick recap below, though, in case you forgot.

First, take a snap like you would any other. Then, tap the sticker icon on the right side of the screen (it looks like a note with a corner peeling up). Now, inside the stickers menu, tap the “Search” bar at the top. A bunch of GIFs will appear as “Giphy Trending” suggestions — you can swipe through them to view all the hottest animated stickers being used on Snapchat right now.

You can also search for ones by name just by typing what you want out. Results for specific searches will appear at the top under the Giphy heading. Tap on the GIF you want, and it will appear right in the middle of your snap.

Drag the sticker GIF around the screen to move it, and pinch it to resize it if necessary. If you drag it to the garbage icon on the right, you can delete the GIF. Finally, send out the Snap by tapping the blue arrow in the bottom-right corner.

Whose animated GIF support do you like better? Instagram’s or Snapchat’s? They both use Giphy and they’re both similar to use, but we think Snapchat has a slight edge on usability even if they weren’t the first to release the feature.

GIFs (whether you pronounce it GIFs or GIFs) are animated images that bring joy to all that come upon them. But, sadly, you can’t post a GIF to Instagram OR Snapchat – you just have to keep them to yourself.

What do you do if you found a new GIF that you love, and you want to share it on your IG or Snapchat story? In 2021, Instagram and Snapchat still don’t support the GIF format so you can’t share GIFs directly to either platform.

The good news is, converting a GIF to a video will only take about a minute, so you can share your GIFs quickly. Have your GIF ready and get started:

  1. Upload Your GIF to the Kapwing Studio
  2. Edit it for sharing
  3. Publish and download
  4. Share on Instagram or Snapchat

Step 1: Upload Your GIF to the Kapwing Studio

How to add gifs on snapchat

First things first: head on over to, click Start Editing to enter the Studio, and upload your GIF. If you’re using a GIF from an online location like Twitter, GIPHY, or Facebook, you don’t need to download it first: simply copy the GIF’s URL and paste it to Kapwing directly.

If you’re using a GIF you already have saved on your device, click the upload button and find it one your device. If it’s easily accessible, you can drag & drop your GIF directly into the Studio window.

Step 2: Edit It for Sharing

Once your GIF is uploaded, you can edit it for your Instagram story. Since Instagram Stories have to be in a 9:16 aspect ratio, you’ll need to crop it first so it fits the Story format:

To do this, simply hit Crop on the right toolbar, then select the “Instagram & Snap Story” crop preset. Move the crop around to see which part works best.

While you’re in the Studio, you can use Kapwing’s tools to make any other edits you’d like:

Step 3: Publish and Download

When your GIF is ready to go, select Export Video in the upper right corner and give Kapwing a few seconds to process the video. When it’s done processing, select the Download button to save it straight to your device.

If you’re not signed into a Kapwing account, sign in or sign up using your Google or Facebook account – once you’ve signed into a Kapwing account, the watermark in the lower right corner will be removed from your final video.

Giphy is officially taking over social media, and I’m not upset about it. After invading Instagram stories with funny animated stickers, the company partnered with Snapchat — and now, we’re finally able to fill our Snaps with hilarious GIFs. In other words, your Sticker Picker got a drastic makeover, and Stories are about to get a lot more interesting. If you’re excited to decorate your Snaps with the new feature, you’re probably wondering how to add GIF Stickers to Snapchat. Luckily, it’s super easy. and super addicting. Let’s just put it this way: You’ll never use Snapchat the same way ever again.

Sorry, that sounded a lot more dramatic than it needed to. I just want to accentuate how fun this new feature is (especially if you’re as GIF-obsessed as I am). I’ve had multiple conversations using GIFs and only GIFs, and I’m so excited I can carry my love for funny animations over to Snapchat. In order to add GIF Stickers to your Snaps and Stories, you have to follow a few easy steps. If you’re an avid Snapchat user, you’re probably familiar with these, but I’ll walk you through them anyway (nothing like a quick review).

1. Take a photo on Snapchat. Duh.

This is the most obvious step, but it’s still the first thing you need to do before adding GIF Stickers to your Snap.

2. Tap the "Sticker" icon, and then hit "Search."

This was technically two steps in one, but I know you can handle it. Once you tap on the Sticker icon (which is located at the top righthand corner of your screen), you’ll be taken to the Sticker Picker. Once you’re inside the Sticker Picker, tap into the "Search" bar. After searching whatever your heart desires, you should see sticker options under the GIPHY header, as well as Animated Stickers made by Team Snapchat. The options are pretty much endless, so have fun.

3. Add GIF Stickers to your Snap.

Go wild! Add as many GIFs as you want! Make them big, or make them small! The world is yours. Decorate your Snap to your liking, and then add it to your Snapchat Story or send it to a friend. (If you can’t decide which, just do both.)

Don’t panic if you make a mistake while covering your Snap with GIFs, because you can always delete the Stickers. To do so, just press and hold onto the Sticker you want to remove, and then drag it to the trash. Goodbye, GIF (for now).

Now that you know how to add GIF Stickers to your photo Snaps (and how to delete them), let’s talk about adding them to a Snapchat video. The process is pretty simple, and if you’ve previously added Animated Stickers to your Snap vids, then you already know how to do it. However, if you’re new to the process, I’ll help you out.

To add a GIF Sticker to a Snapchat video, all you have to do is press and hold the Sticker to pin it onto something in the footage. Once it’s pinned, the GIF Sticker will move, scale, and rotate as the video plays. It’ll basically give your GIF Sticker even more life than it already has. Your follows will appreciate the entertainment.

There’s one thing you should note before having fun with the GIF Stickers: According to Snapchat, the feature is slowly rolling out on iOS and Android phones starting on Tuesday, Feb. 20. So, if the Stickers haven’t made their way to your phone yet, don’t panic. They’re coming. so get ready to decorate your Snaps with the coolest GIFs.

Snapchat introduced a new feature on Tuesday that allows users to include GIFs from the media repository Giphy in their snaps. The update marks the latest move in Snapchat’s one-upmanship battle with Instagram (it added GIF support last month) as they both add new features in a bid for messaging app supremacy.

How to Add GIF Stickers

To include GIFs in a snap, press the sticker button while decorating a picture or video. When you type a search term, Giphy results will now be displayed along with the stickers and emojis that were previously available. Multiple GIFs can be added to a snap, and they can be scaled like any other sticker.

The Giphy integration is just the latest change in Snapchat’s recent overhaul. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel first announced the new look for Snapchat in November 2017, but the app makeover wasn’t available worldwide until early February.

Since its release a couple of weeks ago, the update has been wildly unpopular. The major changes were met with swift backlash, culminating in a massive petition demanding that Snap rescind the changes and revert to the old Snapchat. The petition had garnered over 1.2 million signatures at the time of writing.

It seems like Snap has no plans to capitulate to angry Snapchat users’ demands and reverse the update. But in a statement to Inverse, a Snap Inc. spokesperson confirmed that a new feature is rolling out in the coming weeks, and it may address some of the major criticisms.

One of the changes that confused many Snapchatters was the separation of friends and media outlets into different sides of the app. Prior to the update, the app was divided into direct snaps and stories, so the alteration made for a starkly different experience. After the change, users complained that they didn’t know where to locate the snaps they wanted to watch.

Once the new feature is made available, Snapchatters will be able to sort friends, groups, and content providers into tabs. This way, people can better organize how their snaps are grouped and where they are located, hopefully eliminating any confusion.

This is a Snapchat update we can all, unanimously get behind. After the social media platform introduced a major design overhaul in early February, Snapchat is introducing smaller updates to further streamline users’ experiences — and this most recent one is exceptionally easy to use. And fun. Which will hopefully sweeten your liking to the new and improved Snapchat, if you’re still bitter. If you want to know how to use GIF stickers on Snapchat, take a deep breath. The hard part of adapting to the
