How to add garageband to imovie

Basicly I am a singer songwriter and have recently starting recording myself singing and using iMovie to record and Garageband to record me singing and putting the backing track in. I have no problem importing the Garageband file into iMovie, however I cant find how to make them go in sync – for example when I start singing in the Garageband file isnt when I start singing in the iMovie video.

Anybody know how to fix this or what to do?

Thank you in advance.

Yes, it makes perfect sense.

You’re going to have to find a way of recording your video and audio separately and then joining them together when you’re done.

If you don’t mind seeing yourself singing with headphones on in your video you could try playing your backing track through headphones while you shoot your video recording to camera.

Then you can then move the video into Garageband and you should be able to synch it up.

Ideally you want finished and locked picture before you do a final audio mix.

The other option, is the music video approach I described in my other post.

I Import/Captur in iMovie then export out (via QT-expert mode) as .aiff

this I adjust in any Audio-editor eg Audacity – then re-import into iMovie without any sync problems.

Are Your Camera set to record in 16-bit (it should) – if 12-bit severe sync problem arises.

Audio I use are
• 16-bit 48kHz .aiff (from Camera) – or
• Audio-CD 44.1kHz

NO .mp3, .avi, .wma or any other strange audio formats.

also – Cheque what GarageBand is set to use.

You can move the “voiceover” audio track back and forth in iMovie. You can also trim bits off the start and end.

When you import from GarageBand, instead of dropping the track onto iMovie’s background area, drop it onto a frame of video. The track will then appear as a ribbon (narrow bar) below the video thumbnails. This ribbon can be moved (by clicking and dragging) and edited. One way to edit is to use the Clip Trimmer. Click on the small gear icon at the start of the track and select “Clip Trimmer” – a window will open showing the audio waveforms. As you skim over the waveforms (or drag the ends) you will see the corresponding video move in the Viewer.

With a bit of playing around, you should be able to line things up nicely.

Oops, just noticed you are in iMovie ’08 – not sure if the Clip Trimmer was included in that version. In any event, you can still trim the ends by dragging them in the main Projects window.

Hi, I want to add sounds, loops et al to an iMovie file. Is this possible and, if so, how to do it?

(I have a Macbook Air since March 2014 with Garageband 10)

Thanks for any advice.

You can add one video file to GarageBand. Just use the command “Track > Show Movie Track”.

Then add a movie with “File > Movie > Open Movie” and select your clip.

You cannot edit the movie in GarageBand, just use it for reference and copy the sound track to a different track, if you like.

However, you can create a soundtrack by adding loops and recording sounds, etc, and when the sound track is ready, write it to the original movie file with “File > Movie > Export Audio to Movie”. This will replace the original soundtrack by your new track.

Thanks very much for your response.

So, giving an example of what I want to do, in simple layman’s terms:

I have an iMovie track of me singing and playing guitar. I understand that I can import this into Garageband and then add sound tracks etc; to it and when finished I export it to Movie. Will I then be able to upload it to youtube?

Thanks for your help and patience 🙂

You can upload the finished movie to YouTube using the YouTube Web page, or first import it to iMovie to add titles and transitions.

How to add garageband to imovie

Adding background music or sound effects to a movie is essential unless, of course, you’re creating a silent film. And in iMovie, you have options for theme music, songs from your playlists, cool sound effects, and more.

If you’re ready to put sound with your picture, here’s how to add music and audio effects to a movie in iMovie on both Mac and iOS.

Add music and audio effects on Mac

You can add both background music and sound effects to your movie in iMovie and it’s easier than you probably think.

Open iMovie and your Project for editing. Then follow these steps to add music or sound effects.

1) At the top, in the iMovie Browser area, click the Audio tab. Optionally, you can also click the Show Libraries List button so that your options display on the left side for easy viewing.

How to add garageband to imovie

2) Pick from iTunes or GarageBand to add your own music or choose Sound Effects for neat sounds or Theme Music.

3) You can then use the drop-down box to the right to narrow down your list. For instance, if you pick iTunes, you can then select from Music, Podcasts, or your playlists. If you pick Sound Effects, you select from Animals, Transportation, or Sports. The Sound Effects choices also include Theme Music like News and Travel.

4) Once you narrow down your options, you can listen to the music or effects by clicking the Play button.

5) To add audio to your movie, click it at the top, drag it to the spot you want it in your movie Timeline, and release.

Add music and audio effects on iPhone

Like in iMovie on Mac, you can add both music and sound effects to your movies on iPhone. So, pop open your Project in iMovie on your device and follow these steps.

1) Tap the plus sign button on the top left of your Timeline.

2) Select Audio.

3) Then pick from options like Theme Music, Sound Effects, Playlists, or Songs. You can also do a search if you want something specific.

Add music and audio effects on iPad

While iMovie is similar to iPhone on iPad, adding music and sound effects is slightly different. Open your iMovie Project and then follow these steps for iPad.

1) Tap the plus sign button on the top right of the screen.

2) Select Audio.

3) Then pick from Soundtracks, My Music, or Sound Effects. If you select My Music or Sound Effects, you’ll get a search option on the next screen if you want something in particular. Or you can just browse.

4) Tap to hear the music or effect and then tap the plus sign to insert it into your movie.

You’ll see the audio added to your movie Timeline.

If you prefer to use Theme Music for your movie on iPad, do the following instead:

1) Tap the gear icon on the top right of the screen.

2) Move the slider to enable Theme Music. You cannot pick the Theme Music separately from the (visual) Theme like on Mac and iPhone. So, keep this in mind if you are already using a Theme for your movie.

When it’s time to get your musical masterpiece out of GarageBand and into iMovie, you can share the song directly between apps.

Sharing a song with iMovie is a relatively simple process.

    Open the My Songs browser.

Tap Select, and tap the song you want to open in iMovie (4.29).

Higher quality settings result in larger audio files, and often you’ll need to balance quality and size. For final audio, select High Quality and above. If your song isn’t finished and you just need to check timing and feel, one of the lower quality settings will work fine.

Your soundtrack doesn’t need to be completely finished to add it to your video. You’ll often want to import a rough version into iMovie to make sure everything lines up or that the music feels right. In these cases, follow the same instructions for sharing with iMovie, but know that you may need to open the song again in GarageBand, make changes, and then re-share (possibly even multiple times) in order to finalize your soundtrack.

Going Further with GarageBand

Since this book is about video and not music, it isn’t possible to cover all the nuances of GarageBand here. There are, however, great resources available, even within the program itself. The manual is always only a few taps away. On the iPad, tap the Info button, and then tap “Learn more about the control bar.” You can access the complete manual by tapping the Table of Contents icon in the upper left, or search the manual by tapping the Search button. On the iPhone, tap the Settings button and scroll to the bottom of the Song settings to open GarageBand Help.

The iOS version of GarageBand has a lot of great features, but many more editing and mixing options are available on the Mac version. To share a GarageBand for iOS project with GarageBand for Mac, you have two options: iCloud and iTunes.

To share a project via iCloud, navigate to the My Songs window and tap Select. Choose the song, tap the iCloud button, and choose Upload Song to iCloud (4.34, on the next page). The song becomes available on all devices that use your iCloud account.

iMovie may be free for Apple users, but there’s a bit of a learning curve when you start using it. If you don’t know where to look, something as simple as adding music to your project can seem daunting – but it doesn’t have to be.

Once you’ve opened your project, here’s what you need to know to add music to your video on an iPhone, iPad, or a Mac.

How to add music to iMovie on an iPhone or iPad

How to add music to iMovie on a Mac

Although adding music on a Mac is still simple, the process is different than using a mobile device.

1. Click Audio in the top toolbar of the iMovie window.

2. On the left, select the source you want to use for your sound: Music, Sound Effects, or GarageBand. The Music option will give you compatible tracks from your iTunes library, while GarageBand will give you audio clips you’ve made in the GarageBand app.

3. Hover your cursor over each sound clip or song to reveal the play button, and click it to listen to the clip.

4. Click and drag the desired sound to the editing bar at the bottom of the iMovie window, below any video clip you’ve uploaded (try to place it where you want the sound to begin playing alongside the movie).

Drag the sound clip to the editing bar. Devon Delfino/Insider Note: If you drag the clip just below the video, you’ll see a green line which indicates it’s connected to a specific clip. Otherwise, if you drag the sound clip lower, it will appear on its own line, which is common for background music.

From there, you can press the spacebar to play the video and sound as they exist within the software. Then, you can decide if you want to change anything.

If the music you want doesn’t appear when you click Music, it might be saved somewhere that iMovie doesn’t look by default. Luckily, you can still add it.

To add music files from anywhere on your computer, click File at the top of the screen, and then Import Media. A Finder window will open, which you can use to select and add audio files from anywhere on your Mac.

If you want to add songs from a CD, insert your CD and then select Audio CD from the list of audio options. Click and drag the desired track onto your project.

Lastly, if you want to record music or a voiceover from a microphone: Hook up your mic to your computer. Then click the microphone icon, located in the bottom-left corner of the video preview and select the Voiceover Options button (located to the right of the red record button). Next, select your mic from the Input Source drop-down menu. Finally, hit the red record button to start recording, and press it again to stop.

How to edit music in iMovie

Once you have the music added to your video, here’s how to start editing:

I recorded the audio in Garageband and the video thru my video camera. I then captured the video in Imovie and attached the audio to the project from garageband. I can’t seem to be able to synchronize both.I clicked on the green area and clicked “trim” and when the waveform appeared, I moved the handle back and forth, but video and audio never synced. I also went to my project and tried to pull the video or the audio back and forth, but it also never synced.

What are the steps to take to achieve this?

If you want the video and audio to automatically sync, Final Cut Pro X is the tool of choice, but it is more expensive than iMovie, and it has a big learning curve.

With iMovie, you can still do this by showing the wave forms and lining them up visually. There is a nuance that in iMovie, you must have video. You cannot have sound that exists outside a video element. For you, this means that if your GB track is the same length or longer than your iMovie video track, you cannot shift it side to side. This is easily fixed by adding some dummy clips before and after your video so there is room to slide the track back and forth. You can find these “Black Background” clips (and others) under the Maps tab.

I recently had to sync up some audio with video. Here is a post that explains in detail how I did it. It may help. Unfortunately, in my case, I was syncing the audio from 2 cameras. This is easier than syncing video with an audio track, but some of the tricks may still apply.

If anything still does not make sense, please ask.

One more thing. When you have an audio track like one created in GB, it is not simple in iMovie to delete a chunk of it and delete the corresponding video at the same time. Once again, this is a task better suited for Final Cut Pro X. It is possible to export your movie to the Media Browser and then continue editing it in GB, so that may be an option for you.

I have Imovie ’08 and by what I have been reading, it’s very hard to sync audio and video.

WHat I did was record myself singing with a video camera and concurrently record the song in Garageband. I can’t remember how I did it a year ago, but all I did was sync the sound from the camera and the one from GB, but this time, it seems as though no matter what I try, it’s never right on. It always ends up a little bit off. I tried using “trim”, but all that did was cut some pieces of the song. I also tried matching the waveforms but I can’t get them large or spread out enough to sync exactly. Is there a way to this?

As I said, I can’t remember the steps I took about a year ago, when I would do it very easily.

It has been several years since I used iMovie 08, but these resources may help.

Question: Q: How to I synchronize video from Imovie and audio from garageband? More Less
