Open a message from the sender you want to save as a contact in Gmail.

Hover your cursor over the sender's name at the top of the email.

If you are using Mail App on your iPhone or iPad, then adding a new contact to your Gmail contacts is just a piece of cake. To add a email sender to Google contacts on iOS:

1. Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > Google.

2. Enter the following information in the fields: Name, User Name, Password. If you’ve enabled 2 Step verification, you’ll need to generate and enter an application specific password.

3. Select Next at the top of the screen to complete the setup. Open the email message that you want to add the contact from.

How to create a contacts.csv file from MS-excel

One can easily type all their contacts in an excel sheet and convert it to .csv format and then upload it to Gmail contacts. But here you need to enter your contacts in a predefined format that Google has specified. A sample copy of that format is here, click here to download.

Step 1: In the downloaded excel sheet enter all the contacts with the possible details you have. If you don’t have any details just leave it blank. But the name, phone number, and phone type are essential.

Step 2:As you have completed entering all the contacts in the excel sheet go to the Office button as shown below. Then click save as and under it select other formats. In the pop window that appears specify your file name, but remember the extension should be .csv. Under save as type select CSV (comma delimited) as shown below.

All your Gmail Contacts added on the computer using the Desktop version of Gmail or added on your mobile phone using the Gmail App for Android and iPhone will be available in the Contacts App.

People App at a Glance

The People app is a hub for all your contacts. It’s a competent contact manager that can store a wide variety of information about each person, including name, email address, street address, title, phone number, and much more. As with the Mail and Calendar apps, the People app only works with online accounts. You cannot use this app to create and mange contacts that are stored locally in your PC.

As far as email clients go, Gmail seems to be one of the most used and most preferred.  If you are an avid email sender, you will often find yourself needing to send multiple people an email at once. Sending multiple people and email is a tedious process, but lucky for us, there are tools that make it a whole lot easier– Gmail Labels.

Even though Gmail is a free service, it proves to be an excellent tool for communication. A lot of its features happen to be hidden from plain sight, resulting in the majority of them going unused.

Creating a contact list in Gmail

  • Step 1:  Log into your Gmail account and click the drop-down on the top left side labeled “Gmail”.

  • Step 2:  From the options shown, select “Contacts”. This will open a new window. On the right hand side, your entire contact list will be displayed and on the left hand side, you’ll see a bunch of options. 
  • Step 3: Select the drop down titled “Labels”.

  • Step 4: Select “Create label”. This will bring up a small input box.
  • Step 5: Enter the name of your new list.
  • Step 6: Click on “OK”.

If you’ve created a Gmail account (and have sent at least a few emails), you have contacts in your Gmail address book. These are called Google Contacts. In other words, with a Gmail account, you automatically have a Gmail address book, you’re just likely unable to find it.

How many different contact lists does Google create for me?

Google will create a few different lists for you, such as My Contacts, Other Contacts, Groups, Circles, Directory, and more. You can read about these different lists here.

You’ll want to pay close attention to your ‘My Contacts’, as this is the only list that Contacts+ syncs with. In other words, if you’ve connected (or are thinking about connecting) your Gmail account to Contacts+, the only list Contacts+ has access to is your ‘My Contacts’ in Google.

How do I know if I have contacts in my ‘My Contacts’ in my Gmail account?

Head over to your Google Contacts, then view your My Contacts in the upper left-hand corner.

To note: if you are using the new version of Google Contacts called Google Contacts Preview (it has a blue interface), you will not be able to easily distinguish between your ‘My Contacts’ and the other lists in Google.

We highly recommend that you switch back to the old version of Google Contacts to easily find your ‘My Contacts’. Here are the steps to revert back to the old version of Google Contacts:

1. Click on More (left-hand side dashboard)

2. Click ‘Leave the contacts preview’.

How do I add contacts from other lists to ‘My Contacts’ in Google?

To easily add contacts, either click the box next to each contact’s name or you can bulk-select contacts & add them to your ‘My Contacts’. In other words, to make sure all of your Google Contacts are in your Contacts+, move contacts from one list – i.e. your Other Contacts – to your ‘My Contacts’.

In the new version of Google Contacts, you can individually add contacts to your My Contacts or bulk-select contacts and add them to your My Contacts (using the +Person icon). Click on the contact >> click on +person icon.

Is Contacts+ syncing all of my Google Contacts?

Not necessarily. Contacts+ is only syncing with your ‘My Contacts’ on Google. Again, while Google has a few different lists (My Contacts, Other Contacts, Directory, etc.), make sure any contacts you want syncing with your Contacts+ account exist in your ‘My Contacts’. To manually add ‘Other Contacts’ to Contacts+, go to your Sync Sources -> … next to your Google Account -> Select ‘Search for other contacts in Google’.

What are Google’s contact storage limits?

Google has three different storage limits for contacts, which are posted on Google Apps Help Page. These limits for Google Apps accounts also appear to apply to normal Google accounts.

  • The total number of contacts in a Google account must be 25,000 or less. Please Note: This includes Other Contacts as well as My Contacts.
