How to find the router IP address on Windows PC

When it comes to Windows PC, there are two very simple methods for finding the IP address.

  • Click on Start, type CMD in the search box, and then select Command Prompt
  • When a new window opens, type ipconfig and hit enter.
  • You will see the IP address next to Default Gateway (in the example below, the IP address is: 192.168.0.1).

If you have ever added multiple IP addresses to a single Windows server, going through the graphical interface is an incredible pain as each IP must be added manually, each in a new dialog box. Here’s a simple solution.

Needless to say, this can be incredibly monotonous and time consuming if you are adding more than a few IP addresses. Thankfully, there is a much easier way which allows you to add an entire subnet (or more) in seconds.

Adding an IP Address from the Command Line

Windows includes the “netsh” command which allows you to configure just about any aspect of your network connections. If you view the accepted parameters using “netsh /?” you will be presented with a list of commands each which have their own list of commands (and so on). For the purpose of adding IP addresses, we are interested in this string of parameters:

netsh interface ipv4 add address

Note: For Windows Server 2003/XP and earlier, “ipv4” should be replaced with just “ip” in the netsh command.

If you view the help information, you can see the full list of accepted parameters but for the most part what you will be interested in is something like this:

netsh interface ipv4 add address “Local Area Connection” 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0

The above command adds the IP Address 192.168.1.2 (with Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0) to the connection titled “Local Area Network”.

Adding Multiple IP Addresses at Once

When we accompany a netsh command with the FOR /L loop, we can quickly add multiple IP addresses. The syntax for the FOR /L loop looks like this:

FOR /L %variable IN (start,step,end) DO command

So we could easily add every IP address from an entire subnet using this command:

FOR /L %A IN (0,1,255) DO netsh interface ipv4 add address “Local Area Connection” 192.168.1.%A 255.255.255.0

This command takes about 20 seconds to run, where adding the same number of IP addresses manually would take significantly longer.

Here is the initial configuration on our network adapter:

Now run netsh from within a FOR /L loop to add IP’s 192.168.1.10-20 to this adapter:

FOR /L %A IN (10,1,20) DO netsh interface ipv4 add address “Local Area Connection” 192.168.1.%A 255.255.255.0

Does adding an address allow access to your computer OR prevent access. Mt fax provider has asked users to assure a particular address will be allowed, so I need to get this right. Thank you.

You should only add an ip address that needs such acess. I have a stsic ip address for a camera that you can’t ping if the access is not permitted. But the computer ip address is already covered under the network settings.

Start by requesting the new DNS name and IP address from your network administrator. The IP address you request must be in the same subnet as the existing IP address on your server.

If you use proxy by hostname, be sure to request the creation of the wildcard entry to point to the same address. With proxy by hostname, you should also verify that the DNS entries with the Check DNS test.

In this note, the DNS name ezproxy.yourlib.org and the IP address 68.14.229.198 demonstrate where the DNS name and IP address should appear, and where you should insert your values instead.

These are the steps to add the second IP address to your existing network adapter.

  1. Use the Start menu to open Control Panel.
  2. On Windows XP, you may need to open Network and Internet Connections.
  3. Open Network (and Dial-up) Connections.
  4. Open your network adapter.
  5. Click Properties.
  6. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click Properties.
  7. Click Advanced.
  8. On the IP Settings tab, click Add.
  9. Type in the new IP address then click Add.
  10. Click OK to close the Advanced TCP/IP settings window.
  11. Click OK to close the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
  12. Click OK to close your network adapter properties window.

To tell EZproxy to use this name and address, edit config.txt and add lines similar to:

These lines should appear before any LoginPort, LoginPortSSL, or Title lines.

Note: EZproxy is no longer supported on a server also running IIS.

There are two methods for adding additional IP addresses to Windows Server 2012, using the GUI and command prompt. The same methods work to add IP addresses to Windows Server 2008 and 2003. We will walk through both methods below.

Method 1: Use netsh command (cmd)

The command prompt method is fastest and we suggest it first. To add IP addresses to a Windows VPS or Windows Server, first open Command Prompt at Start > Run > cmd.

Enter the command for each new IP address to add to the system:

Edit the IP address (italic) with your additional IP. The subnet mask is usually 255.255.255.0.

Method 2: Add IP Addresses to Windows in Network Adapter Settings (GUI)

Navigate to Control Panel > Network & Internet > Network Connections and Change Adapter Settings. Right click “Local Area Connection” and choose Properties.

Select TCP/IPv4 and click Properties.

Check that your server is configured to use a specific IP address, netmask, and gateway. (This is the public IP address of your Windows VPS or server. If you don’t know what to enter, please contact us.)

In the event that the Internet Protocol (IP) address that you have requested was not added automatically through automation, the following article describes the steps to manually add the IP address to your server.

Note: You must request a new IP address by opening a ticket in order to have an an additional IP address.

You can add a new IP address by using PowerShell or the Windows Graphical User Interface (GUI).

PowerShell

Windows 2012+

Open Windows Powershell by using the following steps:

Press the Windows Key and R on the keyboard to open the Run dialog box.

Enter powershell.exe and press Enter.

Use the following command (Subnet Mask CIDR Format without slash):

The command should look similar to the following example command:

  1. Open the Windows Control Panel.
  2. Navigate to Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings.
  3. Right-click the network adapter associated with the public interface and click properties.
  4. Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPV4).
  5. Click Advanced.
  6. Under IP Adressess, click Add.
  7. Type in the new IP address.
  8. Click Apply to save the new IP address.

Verify the new IP address

Open Windows Powershell by using the following steps:

  1. Press the Windows Key and R on the keyboard to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Enter powershell.exe and press Enter.
  3. Enter the command ping replacing with the newly added IP address.

A successful response indicates the IP address was added successfully.

IP addresses, short for Internet Protocol addresses, are numbered labels that each device on a network receives; the IP address allows for the device to communicate while assigning identification and addressing. A static IP address is a specific classification that of address that is assigned or configured for a specific device; this means the address is not assigned by the client/server protocols used for automatically assigning IP addresses. These addresses are considered static since the IP address does not change; a static address may be used to provide a stable address for a device in your network, allowing requests to be forwarded consistently to a designated address without worrying about an IP address change.

Getting Started

In this tutorial, we’re assigning a static IP address in Windows Server 2016. To do that, you will need one node that already has Windows Server 2016 installed; the node you choose may be hosted on a cloud server or a dedicated server. A cloud server is a shared resource that hosts a virtual server environment while a dedicated server is a hardware server that’s been configured to be used by one party.

When you’ve chosen your node, make sure to run any updates necessary for your Windows Server 2016 instance; running updates on the system is a good first step for any changes or installations.

It’s important to note that you will need access to the administrator account or an administrative login for your server before you can set a static IP address.

Assigning a Static IP in Windows Server 2016

The first step to assigning your new IP address is to connect to the node through the console or a remote desktop connection, if accessible:

Once opened, you can then fill in the information that’s required to make the change to a static IP, making sure to update the Network Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS IP address as necessary:

Once complete, your IP address has been configured to static, meaning it will not change or be assigned a new address.

Step 3 : In the Network Connections window, right-click your server’s Ethernet and select Properties.

Step 4 : In the Ethernet Properties window, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and click the Properties button.

Step 5 : In the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties window, select the Use the following IP address: option and enter the IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway fields. Click the Close button to close the Ethernet Properties window.

Using Server Configuration

Step 1 : Type Sconfig.cmd, and then press ENTER. The Server Configuration tool interface opens.

Step 2 : Enter 8 as a selected option and press Enter.

Step 3 : Enter the number of the network adapter that you want to set up the IP address for and press Enter.

Step 4 : Enter 1 in the sub-menu to set the network adapter address and press Enter.

Step 5 : Enter S for the static IP address and press Enter.

Step 6 : Enter the static IP address and press Enter.

Step 7 : Enter the subnet mask and press Enter.

Step 8 : Enter the default gateway and press Enter.

Step 9 : Enter 2 in the sub-menu to set the DNS servers and press Enter.

Step 10 : Enter the new preferred DNS server and press Enter.

Step 11 : In the Network Settings dialog box, click OK to close it.

Step 12 : Enter the alternate DNS server and press Enter.

Step 13 : Enter 4 in the sub-menu to exit and Return to Main Menu:

TCP/IP defines how your PC communicates with other PCs.

To make it easier to manage TCP/IP settings, we recommend using automated Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). DHCP automatically assigns Internet Protocol (IP) addresses to the computers on your network if your network supports it. If you use DHCP, then you don’t have to change your TCP/IP settings if you move your PC to another location, and DHCP doesn’t require you to manually configure TCP/IP settings, such as Domain Name System (DNS) and Windows Internet Name Service (WINS).

To enable DHCP or change other TCP/IP settings

Select Start, then type settings. Select Settings > Network & internet.

Do one of the following:

For a Wi-Fi network, select Wi-Fi > Manage known networks. Choose the network for which you want to change the settings.

For an Ethernet network, select Ethernet, then select the Ethernet network you’re connected to.

Next to IP assignment, select Edit.

Under Edit network IP settings or Edit IP settings, select Automatic (DHCP) or Manual.

To specify IPv4 settings manually

Under Edit network IP settings or Edit IP settings, choose Manual, then turn on IPv4.

To specify an IP address, in the IP address, Subnet mask, and Gateway boxes, type the IP address settings.

To specify a DNS server address, in the Preferred DNS and Alternate DNS boxes, type the addresses of the primary and secondary DNS servers.

To specify if you want to use an encrypted (DNS over HTTPS) or unencrypted connection to the DNS server you specify, for Preferred DNS encryption and Alternate DNS encryption, choose the setting you want.

To specify IPv6 settings manually

Under Edit network IP settings or Edit IP settings, choose Manual, then turn on IPv6.

To specify an IP address, in the IP address, Subnet prefix length, and Gateway boxes, type the IP address settings.

Select Start , then select Settings > Network & Internet .

Do one of the following:

For a Wi-Fi network, select Wi-Fi > Manage known networks. Choose the network you want to change the settings for, then select Properties.

For an Ethernet network, select Ethernet , then select the Ethernet network you’re connected to.

Under IP assignment, select Edit.

When you select Manual, you can manually set your IP address settings and DNS server address.

When you’re done, select Save.

To enable DHCP or change other TCP/IP settings

Do one of the following:

In Windows 8.1, select the Start button, start typing View network connections, and then select View network connections in the list.

In Windows 7, open Network Connections by selecting the Start button, and then selecting Control Panel. In the search box, type adapter, and then, under Network and Sharing Center, select View network connections.

Right-click the connection that you want to change, and then select Properties. If you’re prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Select the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, select either Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6), and then select Properties.

To specify IPv4 IP address settings, do one of the following:

To get IP settings automatically using DHCP, select Obtain an IP address automatically, and then select OK.

To specify an IP address, select Use the following IP address, and then, in the IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway boxes, type the IP address settings.

To specify IPv6 IP address settings, do one of the following:

To get IP settings automatically using DHCP, select Obtain an IPv6 address automatically, and then select OK.

To specify an IP address, select Use the following IPv6 address, and then, in the IPv6 address, Subnet prefix length, and Default gateway boxes, type the IP address settings.

To specify DNS server address settings, do one of the following:

To get a DNS server address automatically using DHCP, select Obtain DNS server address automatically, and then select OK.

To specify a DNS server address, select Use the following DNS server addresses, and then, in the Preferred DNS server and Alternate DNS server boxes, type the addresses of the primary and secondary DNS servers.

To change advanced DNS, WINS, and IP settings, select Advanced.

Note: To install IPv4, run Command Prompt as an administrator, type netsh interface ipv4 install, and then press Enter.
