Users with less than 10K followers have been asking for the ability to link from stories for some time, and (good news!) it looks like Instagram is finally taking note.
In an interview with The Verge, Instagram’s VP of Product, Vishal Shah, confirmed they are testing making Instagram story links available to all account sizes.
Shah shared that the company is using the test mostly to learn how people might “take advantage of links,” while keeping a close eye on misinformation and spam.
As part of the test, select accounts with “a voice and reach on the platform” will be given access to the new Instagram story link sticker:
However, it is still unknown how widely this test will be made available, or when it will be rolled out fully.

Did you know that you can add swipe up links to any IGTV video you create, even if you don’t have 10K followers?
This might not be as flexible as adding a direct link to your Instagram Story — but IGTV videos can have multiple clickable links in the video description.
This means you can use IGTV videos as a mini landing page to link to from your Instagram Stories.
How Link to an IGTV Video from an Instagram Story:
Record a video (between 15 seconds and 10 minutes in length) and upload to IGTV, adding links to the video description.
Create an Instagram story. Add a clear call-to-action to your stories that encourages viewers to swipe up and click the small arrow next to your IGTV video title to discover your links.
Select the link icon at the top of the screen and tap “IGTV video.” Your IGTV video will now be directly accessible via a swipe up link from your Instagram story.

Instagram Story Link Hack #2: Add a Swipe Up Link to Your Instagram Shop
Another way to drive traffic from your Instagram Stories (without 10K followers) is by adding a swipe up link to your Instagram Shop.
To do this, you must have Instagram Shopping enabled on your account.
Once you’re set up, you can link to your shop from any Instagram story — regardless of how many followers you have.
How to Link to Your Instagram Shop from an Instagram Story:
Set up Instagram Shopping for your account. You can do this by following Instagram’s setup guide here.
Create an Instagram story.
Select the link icon at the top of the screen and tap “Shop.” Your Instagram Shop will now be directly accessible via a swipe up link from your Instagram story.

Instagram has started to notify users that the swipe-up gesture to access links is going away on August 30. The company will use a new link sticker instead.
As noticed by researcher Jane Manchun Wong, who usually breaks news about features social networks are developing, Instagram is getting rid of the swipe-up gesture to access links.
Then, YouTuber Sam Sheffer shared the message some users are receiving on the Instagram app:

Starting August 30, swipe up links will go away. To add a link to your story, use the new link sticker.
Although the feature is new, Instagram says link stickers will only be available for users with more than 10K followers or that are verified by the platform with a blue checkmark, as it already happens with the swipe-up gesture.
At that time, The Verge reported that “these stickers will operate the same way a swipe-up link does, except with a tap instead of a swipe. This also means that people will be able to respond to stories that include a sticker, something that is not possible on stories with a swipe-up link.”
Since it’s been more than two months that tests started, Instagram seems satisfied with it and will start rolling out this new feature next week. As for now, it’s unclear how this feature will roll out to all users and whether there will be any limitations on who can use a link sticker.

Now, this new feature might initially be problematic because:
- people won’t be used to it
- there will be glitches (some will still have the swipe-up, others will have the sticker but it won’t be tappable)

All that said, I actually think that the link sticker is going to be much more effective than the swipe-up — in the long run.
If you think about it, most of our use of Instagram involves tapping on things. We tap to:

- move forward and backward on stories (and do almost anything on stories, really)
We’ve only become accustomed to swiping up on stories because that’s how the feature was designed.
But I think a clickable link sticker is going to end up being much more native and fit better into the general flow of Instagram.
Don’t quote me on this, but my guess is that, eventually (and in the not-too-distant future), this new link will actually help conversion rates.

“Is this sticker going to be available for accounts that have less than 10,000 followers?!”

There’s no status symbol on Instagram quite like the Swipe Up, the feature that lets verified accounts and users with at least 10,000 followers link out to web pages from their Instagram Stories. Soon, however, that feature is getting a facelift: Starting on Aug. 30, per TechCrunch, swipe ups will be swapped for link stickers. Like the Location or Poll stickers, you’ll be able to move these widgets around your Instagram Story to maximize clicks; people will also be able to reply directly to Stories with link stickers, whereas currently, you can’t respond to Stories with swipe ups.
Instagram had been testing letting anyone link out from their Story using link stickers earlier this summer, but is only rolling out the update to people who already have the swipe up feature. (Womp, womp.) “We’re also aware of the risk of bad actors, spam, and the spread of misinformation that may come up with this feature, so we’re testing and watching the potential impact to better understand whether to roll out to everyone,” a spokesperson told Bustle about the original test.
Why Can’t People Put Links In Their Stories Automatically?
In 2020, Instagram told Bustle that there are guardrails on who can have access to the swipe up feature in order “to reduce spam and abuse risks.” A spokesperson explained that limiting swipe up usage to public figures and creators with large followings reduces the likelihood of it being used to share links that lead followers to unsafe websites or misinformation.
Still, activists in particular have voiced their frustration with those limitations on swipe ups, as it makes it more difficult to direct followers to further reading on complicated issues — hence the spread of multi-slide Instagram infographics. And regular users who want to share an article, or tag a small business or cause in a Story, find themselves frustrated with the feature’s exclusivity, too. The ability to connect people with external resources while remaining on the app can make them more likely to actually check out the site.
How To Put Links In Your Instagram Stories
If you have 10,000 followers, or are verified, you should have the swipe up tool built into your Story menu. Starting Aug. 30, you won’t see the link icon that’s next to the filter icon. Instead, you’ll tap the sticker icon (the little page with a smiley face on it). Tap the link sticker and enter the URL you want your Story to navigate to. (If you’re not seeing this icon and you recently got verified or hit 10K, head to Settings and make sure that you have switched over to a professional account.) When you post your Story, the link will become active. You’ll be able to see how many people gave it a tap when you look at your regular Story analytics.
If you’re not eligible to link out from your Story, you can take advantage of a loophole: IGTV. When you upload a video to IGTV, the description box will automatically hyperlink a URL. When you publish the video, your followers will be able to tap the description, then tap the live link. You can also share your IGTV video to your grid, or promote it on your Stories. Yes, this method is incredibly roundabout, but if you really want to share a link that people can access directly, it’ll do.
If there are multiple links that you want to share, you can sign up with LinkTree, a third party website that generates URLs for Instagram bios. Putting a LinkTree in your bio will direct followers to a landing page that you can set up to host other links with descriptive names to help your followers find the link you’re calling out. It’s not quite “swipe up, you guys” energy, but it’s a functional alternative.

- A typical link in your profile/bio.

Drawing an upward arrow can get the point across too. Remember that Instagram stories feel personal and unofficial, so you can also add a joke or pun that fits your brand and the image in question.
You can also simply draw attention to the See More option on the bottom of the page by adding stickers or doodles.
The Workaround for Smaller Accounts
Users who do not have more than 10,000 followers can take advantage of Instagram’s IGTV to get the swipe up feature. You will still need a business account to do this, however.
If you are not already familiar with IGTV it is Instagram’s version of television. Designed for uploading videos, this will give you the Share Link option we mentioned above.
