How to add a sound device to a computer

Connect speakers, headphones, a webcam with a built-in microphone, a Bluetooth headset, or another audio devices to your Windows PC and you’ll need to choose which devices Windows actually uses. This is easy to configure–and now even easier on Windows 10.

On computers with a headphone jack, you often don’t need to fiddle with settings. Just plug in a headset and your computer will probably be configured to automatically use the headset. Unplug the headset and it will return to using its speakers.

If your headphones or speakers connect through a different port, though–like USB or Bluetooth–your computer will see them as a separate output device, and you’ll need to specifically set them as your playback device in Windows.

Windows 10: Use This Simple Taskbar Shortcut to Set Playback Devices

This is now quicker and easier than it used to be if you’re using Windows 10 with the Anniversary Update. You don’t need to open the Sound panel like you do in Windows 7 or 8 (see next section).

Just click the sound icon in your notification area–also known as the system tray)–click the “Select playback device” option, and select the playback device you want to use from the menu.

You’re done. If you’re currently playing audio, it should automatically switch to the device you chose.

How to Set Your Playback and Recording Devices from the Sound Menu

On previous versions of Windows–or if you just need more advanced settings–you must use the Sound control panel. You also need to do this to change your default recording device–for example, to select between different microphones–even on Windows 10’s Anniversary Update.

To do this, right-click the speaker icon in the notification area. Select “Playback devices” if you want to select your default speakers or “Recording devices” if you want to select your microphone.

How to add a sound device to a computer

Use the Playback and Recording tabs to choose your devices. Right-click a device and select “Set as Default Device” to make it your default audio device. If anything is currently playing or recording on your system, it should switch to the device you choose as your default.

How to add a sound device to a computer

There’s also a “Set as Default Communication Device” option you can use. Communications–like video and audio calls placed over Skype–will use the communication device instead of your normal device. This allows you to use your computer’s speakers for normal audio while the audio from a voice call is played on your headset, for example.

How to add a sound device to a computer

The Sound panel controls the default devices in applications that respect your default setting. However, many individual applications also provide options that let you choose playback and recording devices in that individual application’s settings.

For example, in Skype you can select Tools > Options > Audio Settings. From here, you can choose your microphone and speakers, and even select a separate device that will be used for ringing when someone calls you. The device you choose here can be separate from your system-wide setting, making Skype use different audio devices from the other applications on your computer.

How to See Which Device an Application is Using

The bars to the right of a playback or recording device in the Sound panel will show you which devices are playing sounds.

To see which applications are playing audio on which device, you can open the Volume Mixer by right-clicking the sound icon in your notification are and selecting “Open Volume Mixer”.

How to add a sound device to a computer

Click the “Device” menu and select a device. You’ll see the applications playing audio on that particular device.

How to add a sound device to a computer

If an application keeps playing audio on a device you didn’t set as the default, you may need to go into that application’s settings and change your audio device separately. Or, you may simply just need to close and restart the application to fix the problem and have it respect your new choice of audio device.

How to add a sound device to a computer

Audio input devices allow a user to send audio signals to a computer for processing, recording, or carrying out commands. Devices such as microphones allow users to speak to the computer in order to record a voice message or navigate software. Others are made to interface a computer with a CD audio source, digital audio, or MIDI instrument such as a synthesizer.

Microphones, among the most common devices for audio input, are used with line-in or microphone-in settings within a recording software package. Most operating systems come with a basic recording capability built in. Users can archive spoken messages, verbal notes, generate audio journals or make podcasts. They can also customize sound events on the operating system by making your own wave files. Instead of the usual “chime” at the boot into Windows®, for example, the machine could play a message welcoming the user by name.

Aside from recording, audio input devices are also used with speech recognition software. In this case, a microphone is used to speak to the software. Once the software is trained to recognize the user’s voice, it can carry out commands rather than having to use a keyboard. When a user dictates a letter, for example, speech recognition software can translate the spoken words into a written document. This is handy for anyone who isn’t a typist or who has a disability.

Input devices can also be used to transfer pre-recorded music to a computer. Using CD-in or line-in (depending), a person can transfer tracks from a cassette tape, CD, stereo tuner, or turntable to a computer. Once transferred, the track can be used on a portable music player, re-burned to a new CD of favorites, or added to a digital library.

Audio input devices are also used to record live music to a computer. Many software packages offer extensive sound editing for musical enthusiasts. MIDI-in settings allow musical instruments such as synthesizers and drum machines to be recorded to tracks. Using a microphone, a person can add acoustic instruments and voice. Tracks can be edited and mixed to build songs.

These devices add a great deal of flexibility and functionality to the computer. High-end sound cards might offer more interface ports than less expensive cards, so if a user has a particular project in mind, he should explore the possibilities with his current hardware and an appropriate software package before assuming an upgrade will be necessary. For many projects, basic hardware is adequate.

Pairing and connecting with a computer (Windows 10)

The operation to register the device that you wish to connect to is called pairing. First, pair a device to use it with the headset for the first time.

Before you start the pairing operation, make sure that:

  • Your computer has a Bluetooth function that supports music playback connections (A2DP).
  • The computer is placed within 1 m (3 feet) of the headset.
  • The headset is charged sufficiently.
  • The operating instructions of the computer is in hand.
  • Depending on the computer you are using, the built-in Bluetooth adapter may need to be turned on. If you do not know how to turn on the Bluetooth adapter or are unsure if your computer has a built-in Bluetooth adapter, refer to the operating instructions supplied with the computer.

Turn on the headset when you pair the headset with a device for the first time after you bought it or after you initialized the headset (the headset has no pairing information). The headset enters pairing mode automatically.

When you pair a 2nd or subsequent device (the headset has pairing information for other devices), press and hold the button for about 7 seconds.

Check that the blue indicator repeatedly flashes 2 times in a row. You will hear a voice guidance “Bluetooth pairing”.

Have you ever needed to route different audio to HDMI and desktop speakers or switch an application to a different playback device? Windows 10 now makes things easier for these tasks.

Up until now, assigning applications to different sound outputs was possible using only 3rd party apps, such as CheVolume (paid with 7 days trial) or Audio Router (free), which still work ok for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7. Alternatively, if the application permitted, you could select the audio output right within the application itself.

The Windows 10 April 2018 update introduced the possibility to configure applications to use separate audio outputs (speakers, headphones, external HDMI, etc) and inputs, right within Windows.

For instance, you can now route a video player’s audio to a HDMI connected TV, while another application, like an audio player for example, can use the headphones connected to the PC for its audio. As for input, if you have multiple microphones connected to the system, you can assign different microphones to different apps.

In this guide we’ll talk about where this new, highly requested, internal sound routing option is in Windows 10 and how to use it, step by step. At the end, we cover an alternative with a better interface: the EarTrumpet app.

1. First, you need to make sure you have the latest Windows 10 update installed. For that, go into Settings > Update and make sure your Windows 10 is up-to-date.

2. Next, right-click the volume icon in the bottom-right part of the taskbar and select Open Sound settings. This opens the Settings window for basic Sound settings in Windows 10.

How to add a sound device to a computer

3. Scroll down to the bottom of this window and, under Other sound options, click on App volume and device preferences (which lets you customize app volumes and the speakers or devices they use).

How to add a sound device to a computer

4. In the new window, at top you’ll see the settings for the Master volume and two drop-downs for Output and Input. Below this section are listed the apps currently playing sounds.

With no apps opened, you only see here options for System sounds at first, but as soon as you open an application that uses audio, it will show up here and, next to it, you will be able to customize which device it uses for sound output and which device for sound input. You can also configure the volume for each app as a percentage of the master volume.

Here’s an example below:

How to add a sound device to a computer

In this example, we have a YouTube video playing in Chrome and the Groove music app playing a song. For each one of these apps, we can decide which output it will use. We can, for instance, choose Speakers for the Groove app, and for the YouTube video pick Digital Audio (S/PDIF) (High Definition Audio Device), which is how the TV connected via HDMI to the PC shows up for me as an output sound device.

(Side note: A limitation for browsers with multiple tabs playing audio is that you can’t have each tab re-routed to a different audio output device.)

Right now, the Volume Mixer (which can be found after right-clicking the system tray volume icon) does not show the same output/input, per app, choices as the Settings app and considering the fact that Microsoft is focusing on updating the Settings app over the old-style Control Panel apps, we may not see the Volume Mixer get revamped with output/input device routing, per app, in the future either.

Bonus tip: Change the main playback device

Do you want to quickly change the main output sound device on Windows 10? Now, you can simply do this:

1. Click on the sound icon in system tray.

A better volume control alternative in Windows 10: EarTrumpet

The EarTrumpet app (reviewed in detail here) comes with better functionality through it’s much more comprehensive interface. With fewer clicks, you can achieve more than with the volume interface currently integrated by default in Windows 10. EarTrumpet’s main features are:

If you want to use a different microphone, speaker, or webcam in Microsoft Teams, you’ll need to create a custom setup. Here’s how.

  1. Before a call: Click the PC Mic and Speakers settings cog under your video feed. After you click that, you’ll see an option for Audio Devices. Click the down arrow box in this field, and then choose Custom Setup. You can then pick your mic, camera, or speaker in the boxes below.
  2. During a call: Hover your mouse over the middle of the screen, and then click the . . . more actions option. From there, click the Show device settings option, and then choose Custom Setup from the drop-down box under Audio Devices

There comes a time where the webcam, speakers, or microphone on your PC might not be good enough for your conference calls. Your microphone might not be of good quality, your speakers might sound horrible, or you might just want to use a microphone that will better highlight your voice. In these cases, you might end up plugging in an external peripheral to your PC via USB or Bluetooth.

In some cases when you want this, you might still want to hear the audio from a meeting on your PC speakers, but use your microphone on your headset — or vice versa. To get this working right, you’ll need to head into Teams and pick and choose your audio, video, and speaker settings to create a custom setup.

The process is relatively easy, and in this guide, we’ll explain how you can go about doing that.

Before a call

How to add a sound device to a computer

To create a custom setup before a call or as you join the call, you’ll want to click the PC Mic and Speakers settings cog under your video feed. After you click that, you’ll see an option for Audio Devices. Click the down arrow box in this field, and then choose Custom Setup. This will switch away from using your PC’s microphone and speakers and pick and choose your own setup.

Next, head to the fields underneath. In the Speaker box, click the down arrow and choose the device or peripheral you want to use for your speaker. In our case, we’re keeping the default Realtek speakers for our Surface. After that, you can head to the Microphone box, click the down arrow, and choose the microphone you want to use. We’ll be using our Headset. You also can change the webcam by clicking the down arrow next to Camera and choosing another camera, too.

When satisfied, you can test out your setup to see if it works for you. Simply click the Make a test call button. This will call Microsoft’s Teams Echo service, where you can say a message and have it played back to you to see if everything works. At the end of the call, you’ll get a list of your call results, showing a list of everything you choose, and if it worked.

During a call

How to add a sound device to a computer

You not only can create a custom setup before a call, but you also can do it during the call too. This might be a case where you want to switch things up after you realize your call isn’t sounding or going the way you want.

To do this, simply hover your mouse over the middle of the screen, and then click the . . . more actions option. From there, click the Show device settings option, and then choose Custom Setup from the drop-down box under Audio Devices. You can then choose the speaker and microphone or webcam you want to use in the boxes that show up under that.

You’ll be able to see feedback from your microphone, to see if it works. Try increasing the volume on your PC or Mac to test that, too. When satisfied, click the (X) next to Device Settings to close the window, and join your call.

Other ways to change settings

These are just two ways to create a custom setup in Microsoft Teams. You also can change the settings before any calls by heading to your profile icon, clicking the Settings option, then choosing Devices. From here, under Audio Devices choose Custom Setup and then pick your speaker, microphone, and camera as we explained above.
