How to add a pin on google maps on pc or mac

There are three steps to creating a Google map with a marker on your web page:

You need a web browser. Choose a well-known one like Google Chrome (recommended), Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer, based on your platform.

Step 1: Create an HTML page

Here's the code for a basic HTML web page:

Note that this is a very basic page with a heading level three ( h3 ) and a single div element. You can add any content you like to the web page.

Understanding the code

The code below creates an HTML page consisting of a head and a body.

You can add a heading level three above the map using the code below.

The code below defines an area of the page for your Google map.

At this stage of the tutorial, the div appears as just a grey block, because you have not yet added a map. The code below describes the CSS that sets the size and color of the div .

In the above code, the style element sets the div size for your map. Set the div width and height to greater than 0px for the map to be visible. In this case, the div is set to a height of 400 pixels, and width of 100% to display the across the width of your web page.

Step 2: Add a map with a marker

This section shows you how to load the Maps JavaScript API into your web page, and how to write your own JavaScript that uses the API to add a map with a marker on it. The following code shows the CSS and JS inline in the HTML document.

Try it yourself

Click the button below to open the sample in JSFiddle.

Understanding the code

In the code below, the script loads the API from the specified URL.

In the above code, the callback parameter executes the initMap function after the API loads. The async attribute allows the browser to continue to parse the remainder of your page while the API loads. Once it has loaded, the browser will pause and immediately execute the script. The key parameter contains your API key.

See Step 3: Get an API key for instructions on getting your own API key later.

The code below contains the initMap function that initializes and adds the map when the web page loads. Use a script tag to include your own JavaScript which contains the initMap function.

Add the document.getElementById() function to find the map div on the web page.

The code below constructs a new Google maps object, and adds properties to the map including the center and zoom level. See the documentation for other property options.

TypeScript

JavaScript

In the above code, new google.maps.Map() creates a new Google maps object. The center property tells the API where to center the map.

The zoom property specifies the zoom level for the map. Zoom: 0 is the lowest zoom, and displays the entire earth. Set the zoom value higher to zoom in to the earth at higher resolutions.

The code below puts a marker on the map. The position property sets the position of the marker.

TypeScript

JavaScript

Step 3: Get an API key

This section explains how to authenticate your app to the Maps JavaScript API using your own API key.

Follow these steps to get an API key:

Create or select a project.

Click Continue to enable the API and any related services.

On the Credentials page, get an API key (and set the API key restrictions). Note: If you have an existing unrestricted API key, or a key with browser restrictions, you may use that key.

To prevent quota theft and secure your API key, see Using API Keys.

Enable billing. See Usage and Billing for more information.

Copy the entire code of this tutorial from this page, to your text editor.

Replace the value of the key parameter in the URL with your own API key (that's the API key that you've just obtained).

Save this file with a name that ends with .html , like index.html .

Load the HTML file in a web browser by dragging it from your desktop onto your browser. Alternatively, double-clicking the file works on most operating systems.

Tips and troubleshooting

Use the JSFiddle interface to display HTML, CSS and JavaScript code in separate panes. You can run the code and display output in the Results pane.
  • You can tweak options like style and properties to customize the map. For more information on customizing maps, read the guides to styling, and drawing on the map.
  • Use the Developer Tools Console in your web browser to test and run your code, read error reports and solve problems with your code.
  • Use the following keyboard shortcuts to open the console in Chrome:
Command+Option+J (on Mac), or Control+Shift+J (on Windows).

Follow the steps below to get the latitude and longitude coordinates for a location on Google Maps.

  1. Open Google Maps in a browser.
  2. Right-click the exact location on the map for which you require coordinates.
  3. Select What's here from the context menu that appears. The map displays a card at the bottom of the screen. Find the latitude and longitude coordinates in the last row of the card.

You can convert an address into latitude and longitude coordinates using the Geocoding service. The developer guides provide detailed information on getting started with the Geocoding service.

Google Maps has made it so easy to navigate that it has become an indispensable tool for getting around town (and has been amusingly name checked in pop culture ).

Finding almost any address is as easy as typing it into the search box, but there are times when that won’t quite work.

If the location you’re trying to go to doesn’t have an address or the address is wrong, you might want to drop a pin on the map instead. Likewise, if you don’t know the exact address, it might be fine to just drop a pin in the general vicinity.

That’s a straightforward process on both a desktop computer and your mobile device.

Drop a pin on your iPhone or Android phone

The process for dropping a pin on the Google Maps mobile app is the same no matter which phone you use.

1. Open the Google Maps app.

2. Find the location on the map where you want to drop the pin, and zoom in as far as you need to see it clearly.

3. Tap and hold the spot where you want to drop a pin until you see the pin appear under your finger.

Now you can use the pin. For example, you can tap “Directions” to get directions from your current location to the dropped pin.

If you prefer, you can save this pin for later. To do that, tap “Label” from the oval options on the pin and give it a name. Afterwards, you’ll always be able to find it in Your Places. (Note that the Android and iPhone versions of Google Maps work slightly differently. Both apps let you save and label dropped pins, but to see the Label button on Android, tap the info box at the bottom of the screen to see all of your options.)

Drop a pin on your desktop

1. Open Google Maps on your computer.

2. Zoom and pan around the map until you find the location you want to drop the pin.

3. Click the spot where you want to drop the pin. You should see a small grey pin appear and an info box will appear at the bottom of the screen.

Now it’s time to use the pin. If you click the blue Navigate icon in the info box, Google Maps will open the navigation page. You can enter the starting location and get driving directions. Alternately, you can click anywhere else in the info box to see a pane appear with more information about the location you selected. From here, you can click the Save icon to add this location to Your Places, so you can quickly navigate to it in the future.

Remember that you can only drop one pin at a time in Google Maps ; if you click or tap a second time, the new pin replaces the old one. And in order to save a dropped pin to Your Places, you need to be signed in to your Google account.

How You Can Drop A Pin In The Google Maps On Your Phone Or Your Computer

If you’re looking at saving a new location you found on Google Maps, you’ll need to drop a pin on the exact location. Doing this will help you to find it again. Here’s how to do it.

How To Drop A Pin In Google Maps On Your Mac or Windows

There are two ways you can drop a pin on the location in Google Maps on your Mac or Windows 10 PC. You can either use the search bar to drop a pin automatically, or you can manually drop a pin on any location on the map.

Automatic Dropping Method :

1. To start, open the Google Maps website first and, if you want to save a location, you’ll have to sign in to your account. If you want to drop a pin automatically, search for a location using the search bar in the top-left corner side.

2. Search suggestions will appear below the search bar—select one of these to drop a pin on that location.

3. To automatically drop a pin, open Google Maps and use the search bar located at the top left to find a location.

4. An information panel will open on the left side, givining you options to save or share the location, or to find directions to or from it. In the map view on the right side, a red pin will drop on the same location, that will be pinpointing it on the map for you to quickly identify.

Manual Dropping Method :

1. You can also manually drop a pin. To do this, select any location in the map view. A smaller pin icon will appear on the map, with a quick directions box popping out at the bottom.

2. For you to view the larger red pin on that location (along with the information panel located on the left), select the map coordinates in the quick directions box.

3. To drop a pin manually, press on any location on the map, then select the map coordinates in the small information box below.

4. At this point the red pin and information panel will appear, allowing you to save or share the location. To remove the pin, select the cross icon that is on the search bar or select elsewhere on the map itself.

5. To remove a pin, press the cross icon on the search bar, or click elsewhere on the map.

6. Drop a Pin in Google Maps on Android, iPhone, and iPad

If you’re using the Google Maps app on iPad, iPhone, or Android, you can also drop a pin on any location using the search bar or map view.

7. To use the search bar, open the app and type a location you want into the search bar at the top. Tap one of the search suggestions that appear underneath to view that location.

How To Drop A Pin Automatically in Google Maps On Mobile Devices

1. To drop a pin automatically in Google Maps on mobile devices, you need to search for a location using the search bar, then tap on one of the search suggestions underneath.

2. A red pin will drop automatically on the location you’ve already searched for, with a smaller information panel at the bottom. Tapping this information panel will bring up additional options and information, including address and contact details, directions, business reviews, and more.

3. Searching for a location in Google Maps will generate a dropped pin in the same location. To view more information, you’ll tap the information panel at the bottom.

4. If you want to drop a pin manually, move to the area of the map you will like to drop your pin on the map that you’d like to drop the pin on, then press and hold on that location using your finger.

5. After a few seconds, a red pin will appear at that location.

6. To drop a pin manually, tap and hold any location in the map view for a few seconds.

7. You can then save or share the location using the small information panel at the bottom, find directions, or more.

Removing The Dropped Pin

1. To remove the dropped pin, tap the “X” icon on the search bar. Alternatively, tap on any other location in the map view.

2. To remove a temporary pin in Google Maps, tap the cross icon on the search bar, or tap elsewhere on the map.

3. Red pins are temporary, so doing this will remove the pin from the map, allowing you to search for other locations.

That’s all to it.

Google Maps has revolutionized how navigation is done on smartphones and mobile devices. Over the years, Google Maps has become quite an indispensable tool for navigating, traveling, and exploration with its accuracy and reliability. Google Maps rose to popularity because the app is powerful enough to find any address once the address is typed into the address box.

However, due to inevitable human error, there are certain times that the address which is being searched might be wrong. In times like this, Google Maps comes with an alternative option where users can drop a point on the map. If a navigator doesn’t know the exact address, they could drop a pin on Chad Kimball Google Maps. Even dropping a pin in any general vicinity might do the trick.

Drop a pin on Google Maps

By the looks of it, the process is relatively straightforward on both mobile devices or desktop computers.

Drop a Pin on Android and iOS Device

Both Android and iOS devices follow a very similar way by which you can drop a pin on Google Maps. In addition to this, all iOS and Android devices are compatible with running Google Maps, so users mustn’t worry about their phone’s support for the functionality.

  1. Open the App, i.e., Google Maps.
  2. Then you could find the location on a map. You could drop off the pin and then zoom in to any area that needs to be seen clearly.
  3. Then, you’d have to tap in the location and hold onto the spot where you’d wish to drop the pin. Make sure that you wait until the pin appears right under the finger.

Voila! Now you can make use of the pin. For instance, you could tap the option ‘Directions’ if you wish to get them from the current location to that of the dropped pin.

Moreover, Google also empowers users to save the pin for later use. To make it happen, Google map users could tap on ‘Label’ from one of the pin’s oval options and name it. Having pins on Google Maps allows users to find a place in a hassle-free manner. It is important to note that Google Maps work differently on iOS and Android devices. However, apps on both OS works a little differently, given that they serve the purpose.

Dropping pin on the desktop

  1. On your computer, Open Google Maps either on Browser or App
  2. Make sure that you Zoom and then pan across the map till you figure out the appropriate location for dropping the pin.
  3. Then click on the spot where the pin will be dropped. You will see a small grey pin that will appear at the bottom-most side of the screen.

At the time of using a pin, it is advisable to click on the info box’s blue Navigation icon. After that, Google Maps would open up the navigation page. Here, you’ll be prompted to enter a location and get directions for driving. Moreover, you could click anywhere on the infobox then a pane would appear with a lot more information regarding the chosen location. Here, you can click on the icon called Save for adding the location to place.

The only shortcoming is that users can only drop a single pin per time in Google Maps. When you’d click the second time, a new pin would replace the old one. While you follow these steps, make sure that you’re signed up with your Google account.

How to add a pin on google maps on pc or mac

It’s easy to tell a friend where to meet you if you’re at a location with an actual address. But what if you’re trying to find each other in a huge park? Or you’re trying to give them directions to your super secret camping spot on that unnamed dirt road?

There’s an easier way to do it than telling them to “turn left at the cow, after the big tree”: dropping a pin in Google Maps.

What does this mean?

When you drop a pin in your exact location, you’re saving the GPS coordinates of that spot.

That way, when you share it with your friend, you’re telling them exactly where you are – not the nearest street address (which might be miles away).

So how do you do it?

Let’s go through the steps to add (and remove) a pin from Google Maps, both on your PC and your phone.

How to drop a pin on your PC:

Step 1: Open your favorite browser and go to Google Maps.

How to add a pin on google maps on pc or mac

Step 2: Get to a more specific location

In the “Search Google Maps” field, enter a more specific location so you can narrow down your search area.

How to add a pin on google maps on pc or macPick your starting point

Now you’re getting closer. But still not close enough. The Barton Creek Greenbelt in Austin is a fairly large place. So zoom in a little.

Step 3: Drop your pin

Once you’re zoomed in, select the location you’d like to pin. Right-click, and then select “Directions to here” from the drop down that appears:

How to add a pin on google maps on pc or macRight click to drop that pin exactly where you are (or want to go)

It’ll then ask you to enter a starting point (where’s your friend coming from?) and will produce driving directions to that spot.

How to add a pin on google maps on pc or macGetting directions

Step 4: Share your directions

Now you just have to tell your friend where to go – so you’ll want to share those directions.

Click the hamburger menu (three horizontal bars) in the upper left, and select “Share or embed maps” from the long dropdown list.

How to add a pin on google maps on pc or macShare ’em with a friend

You’ll have the option to share the link via social media or, if you’d like to keep it private, to copy the link and send it directly to your friend:

How to add a pin on google maps on pc or macOr share ’em with everyone (only if you want the world to know where you are)

There you go! Your friend will have a much better chance of finding you now.

How to remove the pin

If you want to remove the pin from Google Maps, simply right click on it and select “Remove this destination.” Poof, it’s gone.

How to drop a pin on your phone

It’s super easy to drop a pin on your iPhone. Simply open the Google Maps app and navigate to the general area where you are/want to be.

Step 1: Find your spot

Zoom in, like we did above, until you can see the spot you’d like to pin. Then just press and hold on the screen until that little red pin drops:

How to add a pin on google maps on pc or macJust a light press and hold will bring up that red pin

Once you’ve placed the pin, you’ll see some options down at the bottom. You can choose to:

  • Get directions from a certain place to that spot
  • Label that spot for future use
  • Share the GPS coordinates (via a link) through text, email, and so on
  • Download that map so you can access it offline

Step 2: Share your pin

You can share your pin with a friend much the same way we did above. For example, you can send the coordinates/link via text:

How to add a pin on google maps on pc or macChoose to share your location via air drop, message, email and so on.

You can also get direction from a location to the pin. If you choose this option, just select the “directions” tab and enter a starting spot.

How to add a pin on google maps on pc or macFor the visual learners out there.

How to remove the pin

If you want to remove that pin, simply hit the x in the search field and it’ll disappear.

How to add a pin on google maps on pc or macJust clear the search field and the pin will go away.

Now you can always find your friends (or be found) – even if you’re in the middle of nowhere.

If you’re a Google Maps user, you may be missing out on a key functionality if you’re not using pins to save locations. These location markers are helpful for researching destinations, saving addresses, and planning trips. You can drop, save, and access pins from the Google Maps mobile app or a web browser.

What are pins in Google Maps?

Pins are convenient tools for marking location in Google Maps. Businesses and other organizations can “claim” a pin for their address and add relevant information like hours of operation, contact information, and frequently asked questions.

Pins can have different colors and icons to indicate different types of locations. Restaurants, for example, are usually indicated by an orange pin with a fork and knife icon. Retail stores are indicated by a blue pin with a shopping bag icon. Some categories of locations share a color; for instance, parks and gyms both have green pins, but parks have a tree icon and gyms have a dumbbell icon.

How to drop a pin from web browser

Start by visiting https://www.google.com/maps. Use one of the following three methods to drop a pin.

Search for a pin

  1. Use the search bar to search for a known location. This could be a street address, organization name, geographic region, or contact (if enabled).
  1. Select the correct location from the search results. A pin will automatically drop at the correct address and, if it’s a registered organization, relevant information will appear in a panel to the left.
  1. Save or share the pin or send to your phone if desired.

Browse pins

  1. Browse nearby locations using the categories at the end of the panel to the left.
  1. Select a location (restaurant, grocery store, gas station, etc.) from the list to view its pin. If it’s a registered organization, relevant information will appear in a panel to the left.
  1. Save or share the pin or send to your phone if desired.

Manually place a pin

  1. Click anywhere on the map to drop the pin.
  1. If the pin is at a known address, it will appear in a panel to the left.
  1. If the pin is not at a known address, click again to display coordinates in the same spot as the pin.
  1. Save or share the pin or send it to your phone if desired.

How to organize pins in lists

When you click “Save” under a pin’s details, a menu appears with all of the available lists to which you can save the pin. By default, Google Maps provides three lists you can use to organize your saved pins. These lists are Favorites, Want to go, and Starred places. You can also create custom lists. Custom lists may be organized around types of locations, destinations, or planned trips, for example.

Creating a custom list

  1. Click “Save” under pin details. Select “New list” from the menu that appears.
  1. Enter the name of your new list and click “Create”.

How to access your saved pins

The whole point of saving a pin is to be able to access it later. One pin may exist in multiple lists, which could be either public or private. You can also share your list with others by copying the unique URL or sharing it directly through Facebook or Twitter.

Regardless of the device from which you access your pins, there are a number of actions you can take to better organize your lists. This includes adding descriptions to lists or notes to individual pins. These details help provide context about why the list was created or why a pin was included.
