How to add a pen holder to a clipboard

Hi, everyone! I have been wanting to share this wonderful tutorial with you all for so long! I originally found this idea from Robyn Lott on YouTube but she no longer posts anymore and had taken the video down, unfortunately. I love having custom sized pen holders for all of my pens. The ones they sell in stores usually are way too small and most importantly can only be used for one notebook (because of the super strong adhesive!) This binder clip/elastic pen loop is great because it’s transferable. You can use it for any of your multiple notebooks and planners. You can even customize the size of the binder clip to fit thick hard covered notebooks or use a tiny binder clip to fit your thin laminated covers. I just bought medium sized ones which fit both! This DIY is super affordable and is really, really easy to make!

Supplies Needed:

How To:

  1. Grab the pen you would like to make a pen loop for. Take some elastic and loosely measure around the pen and leave a little slack, not too much though (remember this is elastic so it will stretch to fit your pen. Better to have a smaller pen loop than a loose one in which your pen can fall out of).How to add a pen holder to a clipboard
For my larger pens they measured just under 5cm, and for my skinny pens they measured just under 4cm.

  2. Cut where you measured.
  3. Grab a binder clip and place some glue on both sides of the clip (make sure the prongs are down).
  4. Get the cut elastic and place one edge on the binder clip and the ither edge on the back side of the clip. Press lightly and flip the prongs of the binder clip to hold the glue and elastic together and let dry.
  5. After it is dried you can use it on your planners and/or notebooks by simply clipping it to the back!

& that’s how it is made! Super easy DIY elastic binder clip pen loop! Now you can always have your pen on you whenever you’re planning or writing in your notebook. Here is how the final product looks:

Sketcher and Part Design are two FreeCAD workbenches that work closely together, typically used to turn 2D geometries into 3D models. In a nutshell, through the Sketcher workbench you create the blueprints of parts that are manipulated through the Part Design workbench.

In this guide, which is part 2 of a series about FreeCAD for beginners, we’ll see how to use the Sketcher and Part Design workbenches to create a minimalist pen holder model that you can print with a 3D printer.

Before continuing with this post, it is important that you have FreeCAD installed on your machine, and that you are familiar with how to navigate the interface. You can refer to the first post of this series for more details on how to navigate FreeCAD’s user interface.

Step 1: Create a new project, then move to the Part Design workbench

Create a new project, then select the “Part Design” workbench on the workbench selection box.

Step 2: Create a new body, and then create a new Sketch. Choose XY as base plane.

You can use the shortcuts on the left sidebar to create a new body, and then create a new sketch on that body. When creating the sketch, select the XY_Plane.

Step 3: Select the square/rectangle tool, then create a rectangle at the center of the canvas.

Don’t worry about the size now, we’ll set up constraints in the next step.

Step 4: Select the width constraint, then set the size of 60mm. Select the height constraint, then set the height of 40mm.

Constraints allow you to specify a set of rules that can be applied to points, lines, and angles. For this example, we’ll use the width and height constraints to limit the size of the rectangle that serves as base for our model.

Step 5: Select the pad tool and pad to the height of 100mm.

Close the sketch. This will bring you back to the Part Design workbench, automatically. You can then select the pad tool, setting the type to Dimension and the height to 100mm. Click “ok” to confirm.

Step 6: Create a datum plane using the top face of the pad as reference.

Use the “top view” button to make sure you’re looking to the object from the top. Select the top face of the pad, then select the “Datum Plane” tool to create a new datum plane using that face as reference. This will serve as base for a new sketch.

Step 7: Create a new sketch based on that datum plane.

Create a new sketch and make sure to select the new DatumPlane as reference.

Step 8: Hide the datum plane by selecting it and hitting the space bar on your keyboard.

Create a rectangle form slightly smaller than the first one, using the constraints of 50mm and 30mm for width and height, respectively.

Step 9: Use the pocket tool to hollow the model.

Close the sketch, and you will be brought back to the Part Design workbench. Then, use the pocket tool instead of pad – this time we want to create a pocket to make the model hollow. Select the “Dimension” type and the length of 80mm.

Step 10: Use the fillet tool to round the edges slightly.

Select one of the faces of the model, then select the “Fillet” tool. Click on the “add ref” button to add all external faces, one by one. Rotate the model and add the other faces. You can use the radios of 1mm for a discrete effect. When you’re done, click the “OK” button.

And it is done! If you want to print this model, you can export it through the menu File -> Export , then choose the STL format. You can then import the STL to a slicer software to get it ready for printing.

This model is functional as is, but we might want to add some details to the sides to make it more attractive. In the next part of this series, we’ll add a special touch to the walls of the model using SVG files. Stay tuned!

How to add a pen holder to a clipboard

Apple Pencil is a terrific digital stylus that transforms iPad Pro into a highly capable electronic sketch pad and notebook, but it’s dead simple design potentially leaves something to be desired for some users. For example, its cylindrical-shaped symmetrical body lacks a basic pen clip for attaching it to your shirt pocket or elsewhere, which makes it look prettier and simpler but means it easily rolls down inclines and can’t attach to cases or pockets. Apple has weighted it internally to sit in place on a flat surface cleverly with the Apple Pencil marking facing upward, but it’s still no match for a slight slant and where exactly are you supposed to put it?

This creates an obvious opportunity for accessory makers. There will surely be a market of add-ones for Apple Pencil, it’s just a matter of time of course, and case makers like Urban Armor Gear are already tackling the problem with solutions like this.

But I’m plenty happy with either a Smart Cover or Smart Keyboard, personally, and don’t much want a spot on my case dedicated for stashing the Apple Pencil. What have I found to work best for me? The novel idea of one clever Reddit user called texasdoesitbest posted late last month. Buy a particular basic mechanical pencil with a removable metal clip, detach it, and slide it on Apple Pencil. It’s a nearly perfect fit and only costs a few bucks.

Here’s what you need and how it works:

1. Apple Pencil, you wouldn’t have this problem to solve otherwise right? 2. Pentel Sharp Automatic Pencil, 0.5mm — I picked up a 2-pack for under $10. 3. Something to attach it to — it clips along pretty nicely to the fold of the Smart Keyboard and feels more secure than a magnet solution might.

How to add a pen holder to a clipboard

Most of the work is in removing the attached clip from the mechanical pencil. I found that it’s secured on fairly well, but it does separate on one side without bending too harshly and slides off. It’s hacky, but I used a butter knife to pry it off.

Once the metal clip is freed, it’s time to attach it to Apple Pencil. You could bend it outward enough to fit over the removable Lighting connector cover, but I found it easier to slip it from the nub end which is pointed and smaller than the clip’s opening.

How to add a pen holder to a clipboard

Once you get past the nub, Apple Pencil thickens and enough so that it easily lets the clip securely hug it and stay put. Just slide it upward to where you like it. After trying a few spots, I found that placing the clip part just to the left of the Apple Pencil marking on the metal band fits really well — it doesn’t obscure the tasteful Apple branding and it actually aligns almost intentionally with the Lightning connector under the cap.

It’s not an absolutely perfect solution: the band doesn’t fully enclose so there’s a white gap opposite the clip, you could potentially scratch Apple Pencil’s plastic casing or metal ring if you slide it on too tightly, and there’s both Pentel and Japan stamped into the clip band.

How to add a pen holder to a clipboard

I have found it to be highly practical, however, and clipping it to the Smart Keyboard’s cover means I’m much more likely to have Apple Pencil around during leisure time for spontaneous doodling and not just in my backpack or at my desk. I’m not completely in love with how it looks attached, but there is something typical about the pen and clipboard effect it creates. I’m curious, now, to see the inevitable market of pen clips created especially for Apple Pencil to develop.

Pentel Sharp Automatic Pencil 0.5mm is sold from $6.00 on Amazon. Don’t have an Apple Pencil or prefer a less enormous iPad? Adonit Jot Dash is a recommended iPad stylus that features its own clip.
