You’ve created your website, you’ve got an amazing email newsletter, and you’ve set up your social media profiles — which have all helped to build a strong rapport with your customers. But even with those options already in place, you want to take your relationship-building skills to the next level. Good news? You can do that with a blog. If you want to know how to add a blog to your website with ease, keep reading!

While you don’t have to build a site in WordPress, for the sake of this article, let’s assume you did. If you didn’t, the process of adding a blog could be as simple as creating a new page and linking it out to an existing platform (such as Blogger.com). You’ll need to check the documentation pertaining to your site to be sure.

If you created your website in WordPress, you’re in luck. The steps are pretty simple.

Editor’s note: Want an easy WordPress solution? Consider using GoDaddy Managed WordPress for your blogging needs.

How to add a blog to your website

  1. Add a new page in WordPress.
  2. Name the page.
  3. Publish the page.
  4. Navigate to the Settings section.
  5. Designate a Posts page.
  6. Determine the amount of posts you want.
  7. Write and publish your first post.

Easy-peasy. If you want some visuals to guide you along, check out the corresponding steps below.

1. Add a new page.

How to add a new post in wordpress

Log in to your WordPress Dashboard, and click on Pages > Add New. This step is pretty self-explanatory. Since you already have an existing business website and you want to add a blog, you’ll need a page for your blog to live. You don’t want it encroaching on other pertinent page information.2. Name the page.

2. Name the page.

Let’s name it “Blog” for easy identification. Leave the text box blank because you want the page to act as a feed for your posts — not a static read page.

3. Publish the page.

In order for your Blog page to go live, you need to publish it. Don’t worry about where the posts go just yet — we’ll tackle that later.

4. Navigate to the Settings section.

How to add a new post in wordpress

When you’re in your Dashboard, you’ll see a column along the left with all the different things you can do in WordPress. Go to Settings > Reading to bring up the page seen above.

5. Designate a Posts page.

Click on A static page, and then select Blog under the drop-down menu for Posts page. This is important. This step determines where your blog feed appears. Make sure to select “Blog” under the drop-down menu for “Posts page” and not “Front page” — unless of course you want your blog to be the landing page of your business website (probably not).

6. Determine the amount of posts you want.

This is a personal preference, really. How many posts do you want to appear when your readers click on Blog? Five? 12? Play around with different amounts and see which option you prefer. Then, save your changes.

7. Write and publish your first post.

And now you’re ready to blog! If you haven’t already done so, you should first set up an editorial calendar for your content so you can produce quality, consistent work for your followers.

Tips for writing your first blog post

Here are a few tips to consider when writing your first post.

Don’t get frazzled.

Now that you’re staring at the blank post page, you might be feeling somewhat panicked about your first blog post. It’s your first post, the one to launch your blog, the one to introduce yourself to your readers. It’s a big deal, right? It is, for sure, but don’t let yourself get too frazzled. Yes, it’s the first post, but it’s not going to be your only post. Your blog is something that is meant to grow and change with your business.

Your first post is a great way to lay the groundwork for what your blog is going to be about, rather than just getting straight to the regular blog posts. So yes, the post is important, but you’ll have future posts to continue to build on your original foundation.

Stay focused and attract customers.

How to add a new post in wordpress

For a business, the purpose of your blog is to build relationships with your readers in order to grow your business. After that first post, how do you continue to come up with solid content that will keep your blog moving forward? The key is to stick to your primary focus, which should be your products and services. When you keep your posts focused around those points, writing your blog content will be easier for you and more effective at capturing desired readers (and customers).

Promote and share your posts.

First, share your new blogging venture on your social media profiles. It’s a great way to humanize your business, and it gives customers a good starting point for finding new information. Second, consider adding social plugins to your WordPress site.

And if you want to move beyond social media marketing into the realm of SEO, there are a bunch of WordPress plugins you can take advantage of (Yoast being a big one). These are intended to help you streamline your WordPress blog and your posts to make your site more search-engine friendly, and they are extremely helpful if you’ve never managed a blog before.

Get ready to blog

Now that you’ve learned how to add a blog to your website, you’re ready to put your words out there. Hopefully, these tips and tricks will have you feeling more confident about your new blogging venture. Happy blogging!

This tutorial is going to show you how to add new page templates to your WordPress Cherry Framework template.

Log into your WordPress admin panel.

Go to the Pages -> Add New menu to create a new page with a new page template.

Give your new page a title and save it. In the Page Attributes panel on the right, you can select a page template from those already included into the template. You need to add a new one to this list. All these page templates are located in the wp-content/themes/CherryFramework folder on your FTP . But you will need to add a new page template in the wp-content/themes/theme##### folder on your FTP .

Create a new file in any .php editor like Dreamweaver or Notepad++ and give it a name, e.g. new.php. Add the following content to it:

Save the file and upload it to the wp-content/themes/theme##### folder on your FTP .

Go back to the page you created in WordPress. In the Page Attributes panel, you can select the new page template called “Custom”.

How to add a new post in wordpress

Click Publish. Then click Preview Changes. The page will be completely blank.

Go back to your new.php file to start adding your content. The file may contain anything you need including some static content or some markup that will determine your page content.

You can use elements from other page templates located in the wp-content/themes/CherryFramework folder to create a unique page.

Let’s first add a header and footer to it:

If you save the changes, you can see them on your page:

How to add a new post in wordpress

Now you need to decide what kind of content you’d like to see on that page. Let’s say you have no separate page template for the “Our Team” custom posts. And you really like the layout of the Testimonials page template and would like to see the “team” custom posts with the same layout . Under the Appearance -> Editor menu, you can easily determine the name of the file used for the Testimonials page template. It is page-testi.php.

Open this file to edit. Copy only the content part since we already have the header and footer (this is just an example, so your code may be different):

Add the content to the new.php file. Rename: Template Name: Custom to Template Name: Team

Change page-testi.php to new.php in the code.

The code also contains the reference to the loop/loop-testi.php file. This is another file you need to copy. Copy loop-testi.php from wp-content/themes/CherryFramework/loop. And paste it to the wp-content/themes/theme#####/loop folder (if there is no loop folder there, you will need to create it). Rename the file to e.g. loop-new.php and open it for editing. Change the word “testi everywhere in this file to “team” and save the changes. (You can do this using Control (Command) + F).

How to add a new post in wordpress

Since the loop-new.php is created and modified, you can go back to the new.php file and change loop/loop-testi.php to loop/loop-new.php in the code. The finished code will look like this:

Save the changes and check your new page. It should have the team custom posts on the testimonials layout page.

How to add a new post in wordpress

Step (2) − You will get the editor page of the Post as shown in the following screen. You can use the WordPress WYSIWYG editor to add the actual content of your post. We will study in detail about WYSIWYG editor in the chapter WordPress – Add Pages.

How to add a new post in wordpress

Following are the fields on the editor page of the Add Posts Page.

Post Title − Enter the title of the post, i.e., Post1.

Post Content − Enter the content of your post.

Step (3) − Click on Publish button to publish your respective post.

How to add a new post in wordpress

Following are the few other options present in the Publish section.

Save Draft − It saves the post as a draft.

Preview − You can preview your post before publishing.

Move to Trash − Deletes the post.

Status − Change the status of your post to Published, Pending, or Reviewer Draft.

Visibility − Change the visibility of the post to Public, Private or Password protected.

Go to yoursite.com.au/wp-admin and log in with your username and password. You’ll then be taken to the WordPress dashboard. If you were already logged in, you’ll go straight to the WordPress dashboard without having to log in again.

Step 2: Create a new post

There are several ways to add a new post – the easiest way is to hover over the Posts tab and click Add New. Alternatively, can hover over the New tab in the top bar and click on Post. You can also click on the Posts tab and then click Add New at the top of the posts screen.

Step 3: Enter the title of your new post

Put the title of your post in the first box at the top that says Enter title here.

Step 4: Enter body content

The big box below the title box is where you put all the text, images and other content that makes up your new blog post. The WordPress editor provides you with formatting tools like Bold, Italic, Paragraph Alignment, Styles, Lists and a bunch of others.

Step 5. Choose a feature image

The feature image will usually be shown at the very top of the post. It will also be your post’s thumbnail, meaning wherever this post appears, the thumbnail image will appear along with it. You can upload a new image, or use an existing image from your media library.

Step 6. Select tags and categories

Tags and Categories are located on the right side of a post. Categories are usually broader whereas Tags are generally a bit more specific. For example, if you were posting a cake recipe, your Category might be ‘Baking’ and your Tags might be ‘Cake’, ‘Birthday’ and ‘Icing’. When creating tags and categories, try to think of topics that people will want to read more about. You don’t want your tags/categories to be too general, but you also don’t want them to be so specific they only contain one post.

Step 7. Hit publish!

You can preview what your post will look like on your actual site by clicking the Preview button in the side bar. Once you’re happy and your post is finished, click on the blue publish button on the right-hand side and your post will be live! Or you can hit Save Draft come back to it later. Drafts are saved in WordPress but not visible to any of your site visitors. — So there you have it! Creating new blog posts in WordPress is easy once you’ve done it a few times. Happy blogging!

Transcript

Hi, and welcome to Learn WordPress. My name is Wes Theron. If you’re new to the Block Editor, you are at the right place for a brief summary to set you up for success. The Block Editor has been life-changing for WordPress users. The Editor uses blocks to transform the way you create content, it turns a single document into a collection of components for adding content. With the Block Editor, you will be able to do more with fewer plugins, create modern multimedia heavy layouts, and work across all screen sizes and devices. Today we will learn how to name all the Block Editor terms, create the content for a Post or Page using blocks, and design a layout using multiple blocks. Let’s start by introducing you to the Block Editor terms. At the top is the Block Toolbar, which you will use to modify text and content. Below the toolbar, you will find your Block Content, and on the right, you’ll be able to edit your settings in the Block Settings Sidebar. When we start a new block, they are a range of options to choose from. For example, ‘Text’, which includes things like paragraphs and headings. ‘Media’, such as images and galleries. ‘Design’ for adding columns or page breaks, for example, ‘Widgets’, like a calendar or social icon, a ‘Theme’ for things like post titles and lists. And lastly, embedding a YouTube or song from Spotify, to name only a few. As you can see, the Block Editor allows you to quickly add and customise multiple media and visual elements. So the great thing is there are multiple ways to add a block. Firstly, click on the Inserter on the right-hand side of the empty block. I’m going to add a heading and call it the ‘Block Editor’. Secondly, click on the Inserter in the top left corner of the toolbar. And now I will choose an image. I’m going to pick a photo from my Media Library as I’ve already uploaded an image from my computer. You may also wish to add a block by using the Slash Command. I’m going to add another image. Media Library, Select. Please note you may use the arrows to place a block where you want it.

Lastly, you can also click on the three dots to add a new block before or after an existing block. As you will see, I’ve decided to insert a paragraph block after the heading, and you’ll see the more time you spend with the Block Editor, the more comfortable you will feel adding and changing content. So let’s see the Block Editor in action by using a few features to build a Post and a Page. So firstly, let’s add a New Post. Choose a suitable heading for your Post. Mine is ‘Help Protect Our Water Resources». Now I’m going to add a gallery. Go to the Media Library, choose the photos which you want to use, and create a new gallery. As you will see, I’ve got three columns, but you can change it to two, and then the one will appear bigger. Thereafter I’m going to add another block, and this time, I’m going to choose a quote, and my quote says «If there is magic on this planet, it is contained in water», and it was written by Laureen Eiseley. Now we are going to embed a video from YouTube. Copy and paste your URL in the block and embed, and now you can also change the width or the alignment, and I’m going to change it to full width.

Next, we are going to insert a design block called Columns, and you can choose how many columns you want to add. Today I’m only going to add two. As you can see, my page is all about water, so I’m going to create a heading and say ‘How to save water’ and then I will insert a paragraph, and I’ve already copied my content, and I will paste it there. On the right-hand side, I will add another heading, and this time I will say ‘Amazing water’ and add eight interesting facts to the paragraph block. And as mentioned, you could have added a third column if you wanted to. The last thing I want to add to my Post is another image. So go to images, upload it from your Media Library or computer and click Select. If you would like to replace this photo, go to the Replace button next to the three dots, open your Media Library, and click on the photo of your choice. I will also change this image to full width so that you can see it across the whole screen. Now we will move on to create a New Page, go to Pages and click on Add New. Choose the title for your Page. In this case, it will be an About Page. And now I’m going to add a cover photo for my Page.

The image below shows you the full admin screen of the WordPress block editor for editing posts and pages.

When ever you see the ⊕ you can click on it and get a list of blocks, in a little modal window. On top you see the ‘Most Used’ blocks. You can scroll down and open up other categories, like Layout, or Common, or Widgets, and find more blocks. In the inserter window you also find 3rd party blocks from installed plugins.

There are multiple ways to add a block, search and choose the block type you need.

  • Inserter ⊕ right of an empty block
  • Inserter ⊕ in the Top Tool Bar
  • Inserter ⊕ in the center between blocks
  • Slash command in an empty paragraph block

ABOUT WP CUPID Blog

WP Cupid Blog is an online WordPress tutorial and resource site that focuses on anything and everything WordPress. Whether you are a beginner or an expert in WordPress you can be rest assured that our blog has what you are looking for.

Founded by Bryan Peterson, the main goal of WP Cupid Blog is to provide easy to understand information to help any and everyone become confident in WordPress.

If you want to have any structure on your website most often than not you’ll have to divide your content into categories.

Adding categories in WordPress is a fairly simple task. You are literally two steps away from categorizing your content.

Step 1: How to Add Categories in WordPress

As well as the Post creating, to add a new category, you’ll just have to hover the mouse over the Posts button. Then click on Categories.

In a glance, this page is a bit more complex than the post creating one, but in reality, it’s not. Just add the chosen category name, the slug (this is what will appear in the URLs) and the Parent of the new category, if there is one.

The bars where you’ll have to fill in the chosen category name, the slug and to choose if this is a child category (subcategory), are on the left part of the screen. If you don’t need(or have) Parent category, just leave it as it is. Saying None.

It’s not necessary to type any description, although it would only help. When ready, click the Add New Category button.

For the purpose of this tutorial, we will make a new category named WordPress.

Your first category is ready!

If you want to add a sub-category, just follow the steps above. This time just select the already created category as a parent for the new one.
Press Add New Category again to save the new sub-category.

If you created a category that you don’t need anymore Read: How to Delete Categories in WordPress

Step 2: Assign a Post to a Category

Now, after you’ve created the categories you need, you’ve put them in the right hierarchy, you are ready to assign the new posts (and the old ones, if you wish) in the appropriate category.
You can either assign posts to categories one by one, as shown on the image below…

…or you can do this in the so-called bulk action.

To do that, go to Posts -> All Posts.

Select the posts you want to add to a category, click on the Bulk Actions tab, select Edit and finally press the Apply button.

A few options will show up in front of you. One of them is the Categories section. Select the category you want to add those posts to and click on the Update button.

After clicking on the Update button the posts are assigned to the chosen category.

Block Editor Terms

  1. Block — The abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage. The idea combines concepts of what in WordPress today we achieve with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience.
  2. Block Inserter — Primary interface for selecting from the available blocks, triggered by plus icon buttons on Blocks or in the top-left of the editor interface.
  3. Block editor content area — The WordPress editor experience uses blocks to determine content layout.
  4. Settings Sidebar — The panel on the right that contains the document and block settings. The sidebar is toggled using the Settings gear icon. Block settings are shown when a block is selected, otherwise document settings are shown.
  5. Block categories — These are not a WordPress taxonomy, but instead used internally to sort blocks in the Block Library. See https://wordpress.org/support/article/blocks/ to explore each of the blocks within these block categories.

Lesson Wrap Up

Blocks are a way to add various components, or pre-formatted portions of layouts, to your website. This can help you achieve just the look you envisioned without needing to touch code. Blocks make it more efficient to write your content.
