Following are the simple steps to Add links in WordPress.

Step (1) − Click on Pages → All Pages in WordPress.

Step (2) − List of pages created in WordPress will get displayed as shown in the following screen. Select any of the pages to add links inside it. Here, we are going to add links in About Us page.

Step (3) − Select any of the sentence or word where you want to add link. Here, we will add link to the word Lorem.

Step (4) − When you click on the Insert/Edit link symbol then the following pop window gets displayed.

Following are the fields present in the Insert/edit link.

URL − Enter URL you want to link.

Link text − Insert text you want to enter into the link.

Open link in a new window/tab − Open your link page into the new tab or window. Check the box as required.

Or link to existing account − Add links to an existing content page by selecting the page from the given list. Click on Or link to existing account and the list of pages and posts gets displayed as shown in the following screen.

After selecting the particular page or post from the list, the links get created in the URL field as seen in the preceding screen. Click on Add Link.

Step (5) − When you hover on the word Lorem then the link tooltip gets displayed as shown in the following screen.

Click on Update button to update the changes in your page or post.

There are two ways to insert a hyperlink into a WordPress site. In this post, I will be teaching you both.

Way #1 Blogroll

One way is by adding a link to the blogroll. This puts a link on the sidebar on every page on your site. You will need to have a blogroll widget somewhere in your site for this to work.

Blogrolls are becoming outdated so don’t make this your primary link space. Use the text of your website instead.

Way #2 Inline Hyperlink

The better way is to insert the link into a post. Typing out a domain like without making it a link is unprofessional.

The better way is to make the text link directly. So instead of putting you would put Thomas Umstattd. People know that blue text = a hyperlink.

How to insert a link in WordPress Guetenburg:

  1. Go to the web page you want to link to.
  2. Copy the URL. It should start with “http://”
  3. Write the text you want to be a hyperlink. It is good to be descriptive and avoid the phrase “click here”

The link button is shaded out in the visual screen. In the text screen I can click on it but it doesn’t work. I paste the HTML address in and write a word or two for title, and I see the coding in my text but when I hit update, and then view my page, the link/title isn’t there, the word is just missing. Writing your first WordPress blog post is easy, and you will enjoy doing that. But, sometimes you need to add beautiful images with a credit link to their source. This is legally important for images and content that require a credit link.

Adding links to image captions

The image caption is the section at the bottom of each image, where you can write the image source or other information related to that image. Generally, new bloggers and site owners never use the caption area of their images, or they add some words there.

The most important thing about the image caption box is that you can add both, normal and HTML text. So, you can easily include a link with a word to your image source.

To add a link to any image in WordPress, you need to treat your image exactly as a text. So, click the image to highlight it, then click the link icon at the top of your WordPress post dashboard, and finally add the link that you want, and save.

Another good piece of advice about your images, you should optimize images, visitors won’t wait minutes to open your blog pages. So, compress every image before uploading it using Photoshop or any other tool.

How to add next and previous links to your WordPress site

In this article, we’ll show you how to add and customize next and previous links on WordPress. As with most customizations, the way you customize your navigation links depends on your WordPress version and theme. The examples in this article are using WordPress version 4.8 with the Classic theme.

Note : Some of the customizations explained in this article require you to edit WordPress configuration files. Always make backup copies of files before editing.

It’s also best practice to only make one change before each test of your site, so if an error occurs, you’ll know the most recent change likely caused it. There are three methods you can use to edit files:

  • Some files can be edited directly in WordPress. In the WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance > Editor and locate the file. Click the file name to open it in the editor.
  • If the file you need to edit isn’t available in the WordPress dashboard, you can download it using an FTP client , then edit it with your preferred text editor. When you’ve made the changes in the file, save and upload it. For more information, see our Knowledge Base article Downloading and using FTP software programs .
  • You can also edit the file in the cPanel File Manager . For more information, see our article How to navigate in cPanel’s File Manager .

About WordPress next and previous post links

Next and previous post links are WordPress navigation features that help your site visitors find content. Most themes include these links by default, and they’re usually located near the bottom or top of individual posts and non-single posts. We’ll show you how to customize these links by editing the templates and template tags used to create them.

There are two types of next and previous links generated by template tags:

  • posts_nav_link() – This template tag displays links to the next and previous pages on non-single and non-permalink posts. These links are displayed on the index page (or posts home page), archives, categories, and search results pages.
  • previous_post_link() and next_post_link() – These template tags display links to the next and previous posts on single and permalink posts. Next and Previous refer to the chronological order in which the posts were published.

The template tag posts_nav_link() generates links displayed on the non-single/non-permalink pages, such as categories, archives, searches, and the index page. This tag creates two links at the bottom of the page within the WordPress Loop to display the next and previous pages in chronological order.

The posts_nav_link() template tag takes three parameters: $sep , $prelabel , and $nxtlabel . In our example, the posts_nav_link() template tag is found in our theme’s index.php and looks like this:

The parameters used are:

  • sep – The separator character displayed between the previous posts link and the next post’s link. In this example, the separator character is an em dash, and the decimal code for an em dash is the parameter.
  • prelabel – The text displayed with the previous post’s link. In this example, it is a double left angle quote (<<), also called a chevron or guillemet, and the text Newer Posts .
  • nxtlabel – This is the text displayed with the next post’s link. In this example, it is the text Older Posts and a double right angle quote (>>).

The links created by this template tag are shown below:

Let’s change the text and separator character.

The new parameters are:

  • sep – The separator character is now a middle dot.
  • prelabel – The previous post link text is after.
  • nxtlabel – The next post link text is before.

Here are the links created by the updated template tag parameters:

previous_post_link() and next_post_link()

Use the previous_post_link and next_post_link template tags to display links on single and permalink posts. These links help your site visitors move through individual posts in chronological or reverse-chronological order.

The default usage without parameters displays the post titles as the link text with double left angle quotes ( << ) with the previous post link and double right angle quotes ( >> ) with the next post link.

The default template tags look like this:

The previous_post_link() and next_post_link() template tags take four optional parameters:

  • format – This is the text displayed before or after the link. The default value is ‘« %link’.
  • link – This is the link text. The default value is the post title (%title).
  • in_same_term – This is a Boolean (true/false) parameter that indicates whether the linked post must be in the same taxonomy as the current post. For example, if this parameter is true and the current post is in the how to category, the linked posts will be the previous and next posts in the how to category. If there isn’t a previous or next post in the category, a link won’t be displayed. The default value is false.
  • taxonomy – This is the specified taxonomy if in_same_term is true. The default value is category.

Let’s make some changes to our previous and next links. First, we’ll assume that visitors interested in technical how-to articles aren’t at our site to read about recipes or dog grooming, so let’s change in_same_term to true .

Since the default value for taxonomy is category, we can leave that as is. We’ll also add some space between the two links and a vertical separator character. Our updated template tags look like this:

Next and previous page links

The next_post_link and previous_post_link template tags can’t be used in WordPress pages. There are plugins that create next and previous page links, but you can also create these links by adding the following code to your page template (usually page.php or single-page.php ):

How to Add a New Blog to WordPress ?

Here are some easy ways to add a blog to your WordPress site:

1. Add a New Page In WordPress

Since you are at the starting phase of your website, you need a blog to get your site live. You can create a new page in WordPress in the following ways:

  • Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
  • Navigate on the left side panel and look for ‘Pages.’
  • Click on it.
  • Now click on the ‘Add New’ option.

2. Name The New Page

  • The above step opens up a page where you can add content for your blog. At the top, you can see the ‘Add Title’ section. Here, type the name of the page you created.
  • Type the name as ‘Blog’ since this will be the main page for all your blogs.
  • This page is not a static post. It will act as a feed for your posts. Leave the text field blank.

3. Publish The Page

  • Once you have set the page’s title, you need to publish the page on your site.
  • Click on the ‘Publish’ button at the top right corner of the page.
  • This saves the ‘Blog’ page on your WordPress database.
  • Now you have a page that redirects to your blogs.
  • You need to assign that page as your blog page.

4. Designate a Post Page

  • Scroll down to ‘Settings’ on the left side panel of the dashboard.
  • Click on the ‘Reading’ option from the list.
  • Click on ‘A static page.’
  • You should see a ‘Posts Page’ drop-down list. Select ‘Blog.’
  • This step is necessary if you don’t want your blog page as your website’s landing page.

5. Set The Number Of Posts To Display

  • Set the number of posts to display according to your preference.
  • You should see an option that says ‘Blog pages show at most.
  • Set the number you want.
  • Save the changes once you are done.

You have successfully created a new blog page. Now you are ready to publish quality blogs on your website.

Add a Blog Link on Your Website’s Navigation Panel

Adding a blog link helps your visitors find your blogs easily using this link.

Here is how you do it:

  • Log in to your WordPress dashboard.
  • Go to ‘Appearance’ and click on the ‘Menus’ option.
  • In the ‘Add menu items’ section, click on ‘View All.’
  • You should see an option labeled ‘Blog – Posts Page.’ Check on that option.
  • Click on the ‘Add to Menu’ button.
  • On the ‘Menu Structure’ section, you should see the ‘Blog’ tile.
  • Click on the ‘Save Menu’ button at the top to save the changes.
  • Go to your website. You should see a new menu named ‘Blog’ in the top section. Your visitors can easily access your blogs by clicking on this menu.

Tips for Your First Blog Post

Now that you have created the site and blog menu on your website, it is now time to write your first blog. Here are some tips:

1. Introduce Yourself

As this will be your first blog post on the site, it is better to begin with an introductory post. Create a blog with the title ‘About Author,’ ‘Introduction,’ or something similar to represent your website.

You can even create a title that matches your motive, services, and anything related to your motivation to start the site. Creating an introductory post before diving into the regular agenda is a better way to lay the groundwork. This will help your audience know better about your site.

Don’t stress out. Focus on introducing in your own words.

Quick Tip: If you use Google Docs to draft your blog posts, integrate Docs2Site into your workflow. Docs2Site is an export tool that can upload Google Docs files to WordPress with the formatting intact.
