Instructions

Install Adobe Illustrator in your computer and run the program execution file to hyperlink the text. Open the Illustrator AI file, which should include the text you want to hyperlink. You can also create a new file and add text to it, before adding hyperlink. Here, the process is for an existing file, which you will use to add a hyperlink to.

When you open the file, decide which text you want to hyperlink. Select the text and choose “Slice” from the “Object” menu. You will now see a flyout menu appearing in front of you. Once again, choose the “Slice” option from the “Object” menu. From the flyout menu, and select the “Slice Options”, which will make the “Slice Options” dialog box appear on your screen.

You will now see a “URL” field in the Slice Options. Enter the URL of the page which you want to be hyperlinked with the text that you selected. If the URL page is a part of the website where the graphic will be placed, then you only need to enter the name of the page, such as “MyPage.html”. If the URL is different than the URL of the page, then you should mention the complete URL address, such as “http://mywebsite.com/mypage.html”.

Now, click target and select the type of window that should open after a user clicks on the hyperlinked text. If you want the page to open in the same window, then you should select “_self”. If you want the page to open it in a new window, then you should select “_blank.” Click “OK.

A hyperlink is a hotspot, or link, such as a button or text, on a Web page the user clicks to load a URL. You can create hyperlinks from text in Adobe Illustrator, a vector graphics program, by creating a slice with the program’s Make Slice feature. Then you use the Slice Options dialog box to assign the URL to the slice.

Open an existing Illustrator AI file containing text you want to make a hyperlink, or start a new Illustrator document to by clicking the “File” menu and choosing “New.” This opens the New Document dialog box. Click the “New Document Profile” drop-down menu and choose the document type. For example, if you are creating an Illustrator drawing for the Internet, choose “Web.” Set the document size in the “Width” and “Height” fields, then click “OK.”

Select the “Text Tool,” the fifth tool in the Tools panel.

Click the location on the page where you want to create a text hyperlink.

Type the desired text.

Select the text.

Click the “Object” menu, choose “Slice,” then choose “Make” from the flyout menu. Illustrator creates a new slice from the selected text. When you create a slice, Illustrator converts the selected object to a graphic and places it in an HTML table.

Click the “Object” menu, choose “Slice,” then choose “Slice Options” from the flyout menu. This opens the Slice Options dialog box.

Type the desired URL in the “URL” field. For example, if the URL is a page in the same website as the page that will contain this graphic, the URL would be the page name, such as “mypage.html.” If the URL is a page in another website, type the entire path to the page, such as “http://mywebsite.com/mypage.html.”

Click the “Target” drop-down menu and choose the desired target. For example, to load the linked page in the same browser window, choose “_self.” To load the link page in a new browser window, choose “_blank.”

Click the “File” menu and choose “Save for Web & Devices.” This opens the Save for Web & Devices dialog box, which allows you to save an Illustrator drawing as Web page.

Click the “Save” button. This opens the Save Optimized As dialog box.

Type a name for this page in the “File Name” field.

Click the “Save As Type” drop-down menu and choose “HTML and Images (*.html).”

  • When you create slices in an Illustrator drawing and save the drawing as an HTML Web page, Illustrator saves the slices in a subdirectory named "images." When you upload the HTML file to a Web server, also upload the images subdirectory. Otherwise, the Web page will not display properly.

A writer for more than 20 years, William Harrel has authored 19 books, including two titles in the "For Dummies" series. He has also contributed articles to magazines such as "Computer Shopper," "PC World," "Home Office Computing," "Windows Magazine," "MacWorld," "Compute!" and many others.

You don’t have to create artwork from scratch in Adobe Illustrator—you can import both vector drawings and bitmap images from files created in other applications. Illustrator recognizes all common graphic file formats. Tight integration between Adobe products and support for a wide variety of file formats, makes it easy to move art from one application to another by importing, exporting, or copying and pasting.

When you place a graphic, you will see a screen-resolution version of the file in the layout, so that you can view and position it, but the actual graphic file may be either linked or embedded.

Linked artwork is connected to, but remains independent of, the document, resulting in a smaller document. You can modify linked artwork using transformation tools and effects; however, you cannot select and edit individual components in the artwork. You can use the linked graphic many times without significantly increasing the size of the document; you can also update all links at once. When you export or print, the original graphic is retrieved, creating the final output from the full resolution of the originals.

Embedded artwork is copied into the document at full resolution, resulting in a larger document. You can update the document whenever you like; as long as the artwork is embedded, your document is self-sufficient.

To determine if artwork is linked or embedded, or change its status from one to the other, use the Links panel.

If the embedded artwork contains multiple components, you can edit them discretely. For example, if the artwork contains vector data, Illustrator converts it to paths, which you can then modify using Illustrator tools and commands. Illustrator also preserves the object hierarchy (such as groups and layers) in artwork embedded from certain file formats.

The Place command is the primary method of importing, because it provides the highest level of support for file formats, placement options, and color. After you place a file, use the Links panel to identify, select, monitor, and update it.

Open the Illustrator document into which you want to place the artwork.

Choose File > Place, and select the text file you want to place.

Select Link to create a link to the file, or deselect Link to embed the artwork in the Illustrator document.

If applicable, do one of the following:

If you place a PDF file with multiple pages, you can choose which page you want to place and how to crop the artwork.

If you embed an Adobe® Photoshop® file, you can choose how to convert layers. If the file contains layer comps, you can also choose which version of the image to import.

Introduced in Illustrator CC 2017 release

Place text from a supported file right inside an object, such as a shape. You can place text from files in the .txt or .rtf formats, or files from word processing applications. For example, you can place text from a .rtf file into a polygonal shape.

Create a path/shape using any drawing tool, such as the Rectangle tool, Shaper tool, or the Pen tool. You’ll place the text file within this shape.

Learn about creating and working with type in Adobe Illustrator.

Point type is a horizontal or vertical line of text that begins where you click and expands as you enter characters. Each line of text is independent—the line expands or shrinks as you edit it, but doesn’t wrap to the next line. Entering text this way is useful for adding a few words to your artwork.

Select the Type tool or the Vertical Type tool .

The pointer changes to an I-beam within a dotted box. The small horizontal line near the bottom of the I-beam marks the position of the baseline, on which the text rests.

(Optional) Set text-formatting options in the Control panel, Character panel, or Paragraph panel.

Click where you want the line of text to begin.

Be sure not to click an existing object, because doing so converts the type object into area type or type on a path. If an existing object is located where you want to enter text, lock or hide the object.

Enter the text. Press Enter or Return to begin a new line of text within the same type object.

Illustrator enters placeholder text by default when you use the Type tool or the Vertical Type tool. For more details, see Fill type objects with placeholder text.

When you finish entering text, click the Selection tool to select the type object. Alternatively, Ctrl‑click (Windows) or Command-click (Mac OS) the text.

For more information about working with type in Illustrator, see this video.

Area type (also called paragraph type) uses the boundaries of an object to control the flow of characters, either horizontally or vertically. When the text reaches a boundary, it automatically wraps to fit inside the defined area. Entering text this way is useful when you want to create one or more paragraphs, such as for a brochure.

Select the Type tool or the Vertical Type tool , and drag diagonally to define a rectangular bounding area.

Draw the object you want to use as the bounding area. (It doesn’t matter if the object has stroke or fill attributes, because Illustrator automatically removes them.) Then select the Type tool , the Vertical Type tool , the Area Type tool , or the Vertical Area Type tool and click anywhere on the object’s path.

How to add a hyperlink in illustratorCreating a type area by dragging (top) compared to converting an existing shape to a type area (bottom)

If the object is an open path, you must use the Area Type tool to define the bounding area. Illustrator draws an imaginary line between the endpoints of the path to define the boundaries.

When you finish entering text, click the Selection tool to select the type object. Alternatively, Ctrl‑click (Windows) or Command-click (Mac OS) the text.

If you enter more text than can fit within an area, a small box containing a plus symbol (+) appears near the bottom of the bounding area.

How to add a hyperlink in illustrator

A cornerstone feature of Adobe Illustrator is embedding images into your document file. Knowing this one simple thing allows you to create a lot of different things. Make sure you know how to efficiently embed images so that it doesn’t take a lot of your precious time. Furthermore, ensure you understand further issues concerning Illustrator, such as when to link rather than embed. This guide walks you through all the important details.

How to embed images in Illustrator

Within Illustrator, you’ll see a list of all the linked images in your links palette. From this location you’ll be able to take a linked image and embed it into your document. Make sure that you remove excess images you won’t be using in your final product (Illustrator increases in storage size quite a bit). Once you’ve checked this, it’s time to make sure the correct image is selected for embedding.

To see all of the images currently used by your Illustrator document, look at your links palette. Find the image you wish to embed into your file, click the dropdown menu and select ‘Embed’. A window will popup next to the image within your palette. This signifies your image is now embedded into the Illustrator document.

How to add a hyperlink in illustrator

Make sure you have the steps down to embed images into Illustrator.

Edit your embedded image

Once an image is embedded into Illustrator, it cannot be edited without the original file. Though this is true, there are some ways to work around it. The first thing to note is that if we have the original image, it’s prudent to edit that instead. This is because the resolution will be less affected if we edit the original and embed it again.

If you’re unable to locate the original image, you can still edit the embedded image from Illustrator but it won’t look as clean. In order to edit an embedded image, you’ll need to open the file using a third-party software (not Illustrator). For example, you can open the file in Adobe Photoshop and change the image to your liking.

How to add a hyperlink in illustrator

Remember that it’s possible to edit your embedded images.

When to link rather than embed an image in Illustrator

When you embed an image in Illustrator, you’ll notice that you also have the option to link instead. Why would you want to link the image rather than embed it? The most important thing to know is a linked image is separate from the Illustrator file and it remains that way. This allows you to use an outside editor program to touch up the image. For example, if you wanted to use Paintshop pro to edit your image, you’d be able to and the changes would apply to your photo inside the Illustrator file as well.

For users concerned with storage space, a linked image lets them avoid increases in file size when pasting the image numerous times. This keeps Illustrator files small, especially in comparison to files with images embedded into them rather than linked.

Embedding images in Illustrator is an important part of building successful projects. Make sure you understand the many nuances of this process.
