The Start button in Windows 10 is a small button that displays the Windows logo and is always displayed at the left end of the Taskbar. You can click the Start button in Windows 10 to display the Start menu or the Start screen.

First, open File Explorer. Then browse to the following folder path, or location: C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms. That will open the Start menu Programs folder in File Explorer as below.

To add a folder to Start menu, you should right-click the desktop and select New > Shortcut. That will then open the window in the shot directly below. Select Browse, choose a folder to add to Start menu, press Next and then Finish.

Now you should drag the folder shortcut on the desktop into the Start menu Programs folder (not a subfolder in the folder) open in File Explorer by selecting it and holding the left mouse button. Then you might get a Destination Access Folder Denied window. If that is the case, press Continue on that window to move the folder into Start menu.

Then when you click the Start menu and All apps, you should find the folder listed on the index. It will have New beside it to further highlight it’s a new Start menu entry.

To add a new file, or document, shortcut to the Start menu, you should right-click a file in File Explorer to open its context menu. Then select Copy from the menu. Open the C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuPrograms folder again, and press the Paste shortcut option on the toolbar.

When you press that, it might state, “Windows can’t create a shortcut here.” If that is so, press the Yes button to place the shortcut on the desktop instead. Then drag that shortcut from the desktop into the Start menu Programs folder in File Explorer. That adds a new document shortcut to Start menu as below.

So that’s how you can add new folder and file shortcuts to the All apps list on the Start menu. Then you can quickly open your most essential folders and files from the Start menu instead of File Explorer.

I also completely understand what you’re talking about; there’s something about how Windows works and how Windows users organize their content that produces a Desktop jammed full of app shortcuts, folders, and files. Mac users seem to be better at organizing their content so that their Desktops aren’t quite so full (though people who switch also bring their worst habits with ’em). My personal approach is to limit what’s on my Desktop, Mac or Windows, to active files and folders. No programs, no program shortcuts, and as soon as I’m done with photos, folders, etc, I move them into another location. It works pretty well!

Turns out you can actually add your Folders to the Quick Access area of the TaskBar as well as adding them as tiles to the Start Menu. Let’s check it out…

First off, as a baseline, here’s the Start Menu on my PC:

Yours will look different based on the tiles you have displayed and your other Start Menu settings. One I really like is to have the list of apps shown (on the left). Turns out that’s a setting, so you might have that hidden. Just go into Start Menu Settings (search for that if you want to jump directly) and ensure it’s enabled.

To add a folder, I’m going to jump to File Explorer and view the folders and files on my Desktop:

I’m poised to teach a couple of courses at the University of Denver so I’m going to add those two folders — COMM 3050 and COMM-4321 – to my Start Menu for easy access.

That’s quite easily accomplished! Right-click on the folder icon and a menu of options appears:

Notice the third option on the menu: “Pin to Quick access“. That lets you drop a tiny folder icon onto your TaskBar, another interesting way to have a convenient shortcut. For our task, however, choose “Pin to Start“, as highlighted.

That’s it. You now have a folder tile on the Start Menu for that specific folder:

Not too hard at all. There are a few ways you can fine-tune the Start Tiles for these folders, however.

Notice you can change the tile size to be “small” (I would call it “tiny” but that’s another story). Perhaps just as importantly, you can also “Unpin from Start” if you decide you don’t like the folder tiles in the Start Menu after all.

But let’s resize both of these to be “small”…

Notice they get really small. So small that they no longer have folder names! Fortunately, you can move your cursor over a folder and a pop-up tip will tell you the folder name, but for my preferences, Medium is a much better size because you don’t have to worry about which folder is which,. Either way, now you know how to customize folder start tiles on your Start Menu and delete ’em when you’re done with your project. Now go clean up that Desktop! 😁

Windows 10 brings back the Start menu, and it’s not exactly like Windows 7s – it includes live tiles that were first introduced in Windows 8. But the cool thing is that it’s highly customizable, even more so than in Windows 7.

One thing you might want to do is add links to more folder locations than what is offered by default, say Videos, for example.

The locations we’re talking about here are the ones that appear on the left column under the Most used and Recently added groups. In the shot below, you can see it displays links to Documents, Music, File Explorer, and Settings. Here’s how to change that up according to your needs.

To add or remove locations on the Start menu, head to Settings > Personalization > Start. The easiest way to get there is to right-click the desktop and then Personalize.

Next, scroll down, and in the left panel, click Choose which folders appear on Start.

From there, you can turn folder locations on or off by flipping the switches.

Remember that these open the folder locations and not the apps. Also, the more folders you add, the Most used group will remove items to make room for what you add.

Below is an example of swapping around I did by adding locations like Videos and Pictures and removing File Explorer.

  1. Press Windows + I on the keyboard to open the Windows 11 Settings app.
  2. From the left column, navigate to Personalization.
  3. Under the Personalization menu, select Start on the right.
  4. Here you’ll see some toggles to enable/disable certain start menu features, as well as another section labelled Folders.
  5. Click on Folders.
  6. On the next page, simply turn on the toggle next to any folders or shortcuts that you want to see on the Windows 11 Start Menu.

Windows 10 allows the user to add folders like Documents, Pictures, Videos and other folders from the user profile directly to the Start menu. Out of the box, they are not present so many users do not try to add them. Having those folders enabled in the Start menu is very useful since you can access them faster.

Starting with build 14951, Windows 10 allows you to add links to the user folders in the Start menu. The following folders can be added:

  • Downloads
  • Music
  • Pictures
  • Videos
  • HomeGroup
  • Network
  • Personal Folder

Each mentioned folder can be visible on the left side of the Start menu, under your account picture. Besides folders, you can add or remove Settings and File Explorer.

Windows 10 got rid of the Start Screen that Windows 8 imposed on users. No one really liked it and the confusion between desktop and Modern UI was frustrating. Even veteran Windows users struggled to make sense of it. The Start Screen is gone but Microsoft didn’t abandon the idea of having a large, all screen consuming list of installed apps appear on your screen. It just changed how they executed the concept. That’s all it takes. Open the Start Menu and click the All Apps button and navigate to the letter that the folder’s name begins with in the list. Not only will the folder appear there, it will do so with a ‘New’ tag that normally appears for newly installed apps. Click the folder to open it in Windows Explorer.

You can use the same trick for apps that you’ve installed on other drives by pasting a shortcut to the EXE file in this same folder. You don’t necessarily have to create a shortcut for the folder you want to add but doing so saves space because your folder can exist on any drive without taking up space on the C drive.

Frankly, the double-spaced list of ALL applications (along with the Alphabet letter preceeding each group of applications) – that Microsoft IMPOSES on Windows 10 users – is a PAIN in the A$$ to navigate!

WHY can’t that be, I don’t know – a TREE VIEW, so I can QUICKLY scroll through the alphabet, and expand, say “G” to then see the list of applications that start with “G”?

THAT would be User Friendly…

OR, of course, you could make the Tree View “Auto Expanded” (like it is now) or “Colapsed” a User Preference (now THERE’S a novel concept – let the USER decide how THEY want to interact with the Operating System)…

After all, isn’t it called a USER interface (emphasis on the word USER)?

I want to clean up my All Apps list by getting away of all Microsoft programs (like Maps, Alarms, Groove Music, Messaging, etc…) in said All Apps list by throwing them in a folder called Microsoftware (what’s in a name…). So, I did as the explanation higher up here said and made a folder called “Microsoftware”.

However, I already have (see) a folder “Microsoftware” in the All Apps list (coming from my Windows 7 profile, I assume).

How do I place all Microsoft program icons that are now in the All Apps list in that folder “Microsoftware”?

Why the hell can’t I just drag ‘n drop shortcuts from the All App list into that folder like I’ve been doing since the Middle Ages? Was that too easy, or what?

In the name of Jesus Christ and all Saints in heaven, which bloody idiot at Microsoft came up with this “start menu”? This is not user friendly at ALL. They take away my freedom to do what I like in the start menu, and if I don’t like that, then I guess I can just go f*** myself.

Sadly, I am talking about a corporate environment here, so I’m stuck with this Windows 10 abomination.
