It sounds like you are trying to add one of your devices to your Apple ID in iTunes. There are a couple of ways to do that as outlined in the following article:

When you turn on iTunes Match, Family Sharing, or Automatic Downloads, or when you download past purchases on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, that device becomes associated with your Apple ID. You can associate your Apple ID with up to 10 devices, with a maximum of 5 computers at any time. Each computer must also be authorized using the same Apple ID. You don’t need to authorize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

After you associate a device with your Apple ID, you can’t associate that device with another Apple ID for 90 days.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

My iPad mini won’t let turn on iTunes match, family sharing, or automatic downloads. What should I do next to add this device because I can’t make any purchases on it?

Apr 28, 2015 11:12 PM

I have done all the above, but I still cannot get my iPhone 6 to show up. I used to have an iPhone 5 but it doesn’t show up either. Please help. This is most confusing.

Oct 10, 2015 2:37 PM

This answer is one of two things either it is just wrong, or its too vague. I have downloaded using my account on all of my separate devices yet when trying to download past purchases or purchases from other devices on my computer it tells me that i have to add this device. According to the directions by simply downloading onto my computer the device should be active and associated with the account. Yet again when i try to download it tells me to add the device. Its just one big circle probably designed to get me to call Apple for help. So apple is telling me that i have to download a song onto my computer in order for the computer to be registered to the id but its telling me that i must first register the computer to download a song. How could a company that prides it self on performance and efficiency be so illogical in this particular case?

You would just need to sign into your Apple ID through Settings > iTunes & App Store to associate your device to your Apple ID. This will give you access to all your previous purchases made with your Apple ID.

Same problem, I bought a new MacBook and while logged in as the manual says on itunes, I only see the option to delete the old and not create the new

I figured this out this morning. You need to make sure that in iTunes – preferences – under the store menu that you have checked at least one of the automatic download boxes indicating that you want to automatically download movies, music, etc. Once you check the box, your computer will show up in the list of added devices in the manage account section of iTunes. To get your phone to show up in the list, you need to go into your iTunes settings on your phone and make sure you have turned on at least one item for automatic downloads (music, apps, books, etc.) Once I did this, both devices showed up in the list.

It took me a couple of hours to figure this out through a lot of trial and error so I thought I would share as none of the other postings helped.

I have the same problem. I had to replace my iphone because the other one decided to simply stop powering on. So noiw after dealing with the hassle of that, I don’t seem to be able to assoicate my new phone to my apple ID. Which I assume is why even after downloading an app through itunes, and dragging and dropping it onoto my phone, it isn’t installing on mty phone. I thought iphones were supposed to be reliable and easy to use. This is becoming a pain in the *** and frankly I’m hating Apple right now. Oh and why the **** is this the case: “if no devices have been associated with the Apple ID, then the Manage Devices section will not be visible.” Isn’t the whole point to have that section visible so I can add my new device.

I am also having this problem. Just got a new Macbook Air. I’m not able to listen or download any of the music I’ve bought on iTunes in the past. I’ve signed out, signed back in on here, tried to get iTunes to recognize my new device. Gone to the “manage devices” section, but only saw the option to remove, not add. Very frustrating. Macbook is amazing otherwise, though.

How to add a device to itunes

Back in July, we provided you with an overview of Apple’s two-step verification. This is the security method that requires at least two factors of authentication—a password and a trusted device—in order to successfully access an account.

Two-step is a great security method, because it forces one to have physical access to a security key, in this case, an iPhone or an iPad.

Needless to say, we here at iDB highly recommend using 2SV for any account that allows it, Apple ID, or otherwise. In fact, if a service that you’re using doesn’t offer 2SV, I’d seriously think twice about using that service—it’s that important for keeping your data secure.

If you have two-step enabled for your Apple ID, and you should, then you’ve doubtlessly run into the screen that asks you to verify your identify when logging in with your Apple ID. On that screen, it may list some of your Apple devices, and at least one verified phone number. These devices act as security authentication keys.

Have you ever wondered what the requirements are for the devices that are listed here? Have you ever wanted to remove or add a device? In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through managing your iOS trusted devices for two-step verification.

How to add a trusted device

To add a trusted device to your list of possible security keys, one needs to simply enable Find My iPhone after logging in with iCloud on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Once Find My iPhone is enabled, that device is automatically added to your list of trusted devices. Once a device is listed in your trusted devices, you’ll need to verify that device.

Step 1: Log into iCloud and enable Find My iPhone on the device you wish to use as a trusted device via Settings → iCloud.

How to add a device to itunes

Step 2: Via Safari, login to My Apple ID → Password and Security → Add or Remove Trusted Devices.

How to add a device to itunes

Step 3: Click the Verify link next to the device that you wish to enable as a trusted device.

How to add a device to itunes

Step 4: On the device that you wish to enable, you will see a four-digit Verification Code.

How to add a device to itunes

Type this code into the box that appears inside of the Safari browser and click Verify Device.

How to add a device to itunes

You will now see your device as a trusted device that has been verified. Now, whenever you need to use two-factor authentication to log in with your Apple ID, you will be able to use the device you just enabled as a security key.

How to add a device to itunes

How to remove a trusted device

It’s no surprise that you can also remove a trusted device. When you sign out of iCloud or disable Find My iPhone, your device is no longer verified, but will still appear in your list of potential trusted devices.

Step 1: Disable Find My iPhone on the Device.

How to add a device to itunes

Step 2: Via Safari, login to My Apple ID → Password and Security → Add or Remove Trusted Devices.

Step 3: Click the Remove link next to the device that you wish to remove.

And confirm its removal.

How to add a device to itunes

And that’s pretty much it. That’s how you add and remove trusted devices to you Apple ID’s two-step verification security setup. You should regularly visit this page to manage your trusted devices, especially if you’re someone who often switches out and changes devices.

How to add a device to itunes

You plug your iPhone into your computer, ready to sync and…nothing. The little icon doesn’t show up in iTunes’ toolbar, and you’re flummoxed. Here are a few possible solutions.

You can use an iPhone or iPad without ever touching iTunes, but it isn’t always easy. iTunes sucks on Windows, but it’s still useful for the occasional backup or software update when iOS is being frustrating. But there’s nothing more frustrating than when iTunes doesn’t detect your iPhone or iPad when you plug it in.

There are a myriad of things that could cause this, but we’ve seen this problem more than a few times over the years. Here are some of the most reliable fixes we’ve found.

Start with the Obvious: Restart, Update, and Try Another USB Port

How to add a device to itunes

Before you try anything else, it’s worth going through the usual troubleshooting tips:

  • Restart your iPhone by pressing both the Power and Home buttons and hold them down. (In the case of the iPhone 7, press and hole the Power button and the volume down button.)
  • Restart your computer as well.
  • Make sure both Windows and iTunes are up to date. Click Start and type “Windows Update” to check for Windows updates, and head to Help > Check for Updates in iTunes to update iTunes. (You can even try reinstalling iTunes, if you’re feeling thorough.)
  • Try another USB cable, or another USB port on your computer. Plug it directly into your computer instead of a USB hub. You never know when you have bum hardware, and no amount of software troubleshooting can fix that problem.

With any luck, one of these simple tricks will fix the problem. But if not, read on.

Respond to the “Trust This Computer” Prompt

How to add a device to itunes

When you plug an iPhone or iPad into your computer for the first time, a message will pop up on your device, asking whether it should trust the computer it’s been plugged into. If you aren’t paying close attention, it’s easy to miss–and without responding to that prompt, your device won’t show up in iTunes.

Even if it isn’t the first time you plugged your device in some settings may have been reset, and you’ll need to respond to the prompt again. So check your device and see if the message has popped up. Tap “Trust” to continue.

Reset Your Location & Privacy Settings

If you ever pressed “Don’t Trust” by accident, your device won’t show up in iTunes…and the message won’t pop up again. Thakfully, there’s a way to fix this.

This is stored in the “Location & Privacy” settings in iOS. You can reset them by going to Settings > General and tapping “Reset Location & Privacy”.

How to add a device to itunes

Next time you plug the device in, the “Trust This Computer” prompt should appear. (Note that this may also erase a few other settings–like which iOS apps are allowed to use your location–so you’ll have to deal with those prompts again too.)

Reinstall Apple’s Windows Drivers

Other times, things can go a little wonky with Apple’s drivers, and your Windows PC won’t recognize your iOS device properly anymore–even if you press “Trust” repeatedly. In my most recent bout with this problem, the drivers were to blame, and just needed reinstalling.

Close iTunes and plug your iPhone or iPad into your computer via USB. Then, click the Start menu and search for “Device Manager”. Select the Device Manager option that pops up.

How to add a device to itunes

Search for your iPhone or iPad in the Device Manager–you should find it under “Portable Devices”. Right-click it and choose “Update Driver Software”.

On the next window, select “Browse My Computer for Driver Software”.

NOTE: If you’re on an older 32-bit computer, the driver may be in C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAppleMobile Device SupportDrivers instead.
