How to add a bullet point in photoshopRecently I deiced to redesign my business cards. To do that, I would use Photoshop to create the graphics and to blend the layers. Then once I was happy with the design, I would add the content to the design.

During the process of adding the text, I decided to use bullet points to separate some of the text. At that point, I realized that, I had never tried to add a bullet point to PhotoShop and I had no clue how to do that.

After some research, I found that Photoshop does not have a way to add bullet points to a Photoshop project. But, that doesn’t mean that can add a bullet point to your project.

Use Wingdings in Photoshops to add interesting symbols as bullet points

by Doug Martin
Desert Life Design™

Even though Photoshop does not have a menu item to add bullets or make a bulleted list of items, there are many ways to add bullets. An especially creative way to add bullet points in Photoshop is by using the Wingdings typeface.

What are bullet points?

Bullets, or bullet points, highlight important ideas in text. They are especially important for busy readers who skim through text as they look for the most important thoughts. Typically, a bullet is a solid round circle, but it might also be other simple shapes that relate to the text.

(This post assumes that the reader already knows how to access the text tool and draw a text box.)

How to use Wingdings typeface to make bullets in Photoshop

1. Position text cursor where you would like to add a bullet point.

2. Select Wingdings typeface from the drop-down Text menu.

How to add a bullet point in photoshop

First, I placed my text cursor right in front of the words “2 gas stove tops. ” (to the right of the bottom red arrow.) Then, I selected Wingdings from the text drop-down menu (to the left of the top red arrow).

3. Type the lowercase letter L for a large bullet (for this flyer, I used the lowercase W to get the diamond shape shown in the lower snippets).

How to add a bullet point in photoshop

Each Wingding character has a different symbol that can be used as a bullet!

4. To reduce the size of the bullet, select it and select a lower point size.

How to add a bullet point in photoshop

With your bullet selected, use the point size drop-down menu to make your bullet smaller or larger. In this case, I reduced the bullet from 12 points down to 8 points. With a smaller point size, the bullet now looks too low relative to the sentence it highlights. Read the next step to fix that problem.

5. To center bullet vertically, highlight it, go to Character window and adjust Baseline shift. In this case, I added a positive one point baseline shift.

How to add a bullet point in photoshop

Adjust the Baseline to raise or lower your bullet vertically. In my case, I shifted the baseline up 1 point to make the bullet point look centered with the sentence that followed.

6. To make a bulleted list, copy new bullet and paste it to the beginning of each line.

How to add a bullet point in photoshop

Once you are happy with the size and position of your bullet point, copy it, then paste into the beginning of each sentence where you want the reader to pay special attention.

Use the handy Character Map app

To see how all the characters appear in the Wingdings typeface, use the Windows search bar and search for Character Map. The first selection should be the Character Map app. Click on it to open the Character Map application.

From there, you can double-click a bullet and it will apear in the “Characters to copy:” area below. Then, highlight your favorite bullet, copy, and then paste into your Photoshop document.

The Character Map makes it easy to choose a few of your favorite symbols to use as bullets. Once you’ve selected your favorite, copy-and-paste it into your Photoshop document.

Wingdings in Photoshop can make your bullet points stand out

In Photoshop, Wingdings is an easy way to quickly and creatively add bullet points to your important text.

I use Wingdings in almost every flyer I produce with Photoshop. In the future, I hope to try more symbols to make important text stand out with extra flair!

I have CS2. This should be an easy thing, but I can’t figure out how to do it. I have made a table, and I want to type text and put a check box next to it, and I don’t see how to do that. Please help. Thanks.

Can you explain a little more please? Are you creating a form for the user to complete? If so, will it be online or printed?

Or is this checkbox to be used as some sort of bullet?

Forms need to be converted for online completion in Acrobat or another program. You can’t send out an ID file to the world and expect it to be readable by the general public. ID also doesn’t have a simple checkbox function (you might be able to use a button in later versions, but I don’t believe there’s anything workable in CS2).

On the other hand, if the checkbox is supposed to be a bullet, you simply need to use a checkbox glyph (of possibly a box and a checkmark kerned together) from a suitable dingbat font.

There are many ways to create a check box (filled or empty).

Fonts to look for include Zapf Dingbats and Wingdings. There are others, but these two are common enough.

Use the Glyphs Pallete to add the dingbats/wingdings. Use the Bullets and Numbering to automate adding them. You can create a new column in the table to hold the check boxes, or you can edit your paragraph style to make the text have a hanging indent for the check box glyph.

Using the paragraph style with a defined bullet is, IMO, the best option for “automating” placement of a check box. Go to the Bullet and Numbering section and change the list type to bullet, click the Add. button, define the font and select the desired glyph. Don’t forget to set the indents.

I am trying to create a horizontal layout list of items for a promotional poster. It is much like a music festival line-up poster. After each list item I need a custom bullet or separator. After the last item on a line the separator needs to be skipped. This is true also for each item that stands alone on a line.

I know I could do this quite easily using each list-item as an individual object, but the list is ever changing and I’d just like to know if its possible.

This is an example of what Im asking that I mocked up in Photoshop.

Text, space, bullet, space – repeat.

Set the text justification to centered. And at times, you may want to use – text, space, space, bullet, space, space, repeat.

If you want to use a custom bullet image, size the custom image appropriately then copy it and then it would be — Text, space, paste, space, repeat.

You could also use tables in Indesign to get slightly better spacing. In this case you would use – Text, tab, bullet, tab, repeat. Then select the line of text and bullets and choose Table > Convert Text to Table . You can then set the table width to match the column width you want and distribute columns evenly. At times, this assists in extending the spacing between the text and bullets for a more fluid look than if you were to insert a bunch of spaces before and after bullets.

Creating bulleted lists is the best way to show off a product’s benefits at a glance. InDesign allows bullet points to be added with one mouse click. But the options are much more varied than putting a bullet point in front of a paragraph.

Bullet characters help break up large blocks of text to present the content more clearly. There are so many customisation options that you can use bullet characters to add a certain style to your entire layout.

Which customisation options exist?

How to add a bullet point in photoshop

To use standard bullet characters in InDesign, a simple mouse click is all it takes. Alternatively, you can use any glyph from any typeface as a bullet point. Windows already provides an awesome selection of different glyphs with its “Wingdings” and “Webdings” fonts. Should these fonts not have what you are looking for, you can also use a custom glyph – which has to be imported as a graphic first.

Content:

Step 1: Adding standard bullet points

How to add a bullet point in photoshop

In our example, we want to use bullet points to structure a text block printed on the bookmark of a fictitious book shop. First select the text section to bullet and then click the Bulleted List button in the upper text formatting menu . If you prefer a numbered list, click the Numbered List button directly below it. A bullet character or number will then be added after each line break.

Step 2: Using tabs to add space

How to add a bullet point in photoshop

You need the Paragraph Styles panel to format the space between bullet point and start of list item. You can show it via Windows > Styles > Paragraph Styles . Before creating a new paragraph style, make sure that the correct text section is selected. This will cause the current formatting of the text to be applied when creating the paragraph style. Next double-click the new paragraph style. Choose Tab Position in the panel that opens.

A ruler allows you to set the space between the bullet characters and the start of the list item. First drag the left triangle over the ruler to the right and you will see the bullet points move accordingly in the background. Then drag the right triangle to the left as far as possible to align the text and the bullet points with the rest of the text.

Step 3: Formatting bullet characters

How to add a bullet point in photoshop

You can format the bullet points and replace them with other characters by clicking Bullets and Numbering on the Paragraph Styles panel. The List Type menu allows you to specify whether to use bullet points or numbers. Under “Bullets” you see four more bullet options you can use for your bulleted list. Click a bullet to apply it to all bullet items. We choose a double arrow to match the style of the bookmark.

How to add a bullet point in photoshop

Click the Add button to select a glyph you want to use as bullet character from all fonts installed on your computer. Under “Text After” you can specify what to insert immediately after the bullet point or number. The “^t” means that a tab is set here by default.

In our example, we want to increase the left indent of the bulleted list. To do so, set the “Left Indent” in the Bullet or Number Position section to 4 mm. Then confirm your settings with OK . To reuse the formatting in further text sections, click Paragraph Styles and choose the newly created paragraph style here. This enables you to apply the style to all bullet characters instead of repeating it for each bullet.

Tip: If your style changes don’t immediately become visible, go to the Paragraph Styles panel and check whether the “Preview” checkbox in the lower left corner is enabled. This option must be checked in order to see what your changes do to the layout.

Step 4: Colouring bullet characters

How to add a bullet point in photoshop

To colour bullet characters in InDesign, you have to convert them to text first. To do so, select the paragraph and click Type > Bulleted and Numbered Lists > Convert Bullets and Numbering to Text .

How to add a bullet point in photoshop

Subsequently, you can click each bullet character and colour it as preferred.

Note: After you have converted a character to text, you can no longer replace it with another character using the Paragraph Styles panel.

Using custom graphics as bullet characters

How to add a bullet point in photoshop

If you don’t find a suitable bullet glyph among the options offered, you can also use your own graphic. First import it into InDesign like a normal image and format it to the size of the bullet character. Then use the Ctrl + F shortcut to open the Find/Replace dialog box. Press Ctrl + C to select one of the bullet characters you want to replace. Press Ctrl + V to paste it into the “Find what” box.

Then select the pasted graphic you wish to use as a new bullet and copy it via Ctrl + C . Then click the @ next to the “Change to” box and choose Other > Clipboard Contents, Formatted . The text field should now contain “^c”. Next click Find .

InDesign should then find the first bullet point. Click Change All to replace all bullet characters with your graphic.
