How to activate straight talk

Once you get a Straight Talk phone, you have to activate it. It’s a pretty simple to do online, but you may find it useful to see an actual example – in this case a Straight Talk LG290C.

Getting Ready

First, put in the battery, charge the phone and locate the activation card. Then go to the activate Straight Talk page.

Activation Procedure

Step 1: Choose How to Activate

You can activate or reactivate your handset as a new phone with a new number. If you are upgrading from another Straight Talk phone, you can transfer your service and keep the same phone number. Finally, you can port your phone number from another provider. In our case, we are going to activate an LG290C phone as a new phone with a new number. Other phones I have activated on this plan include the Samsung R355C QWERTY phones and the Samsung Galaxy Precedent smartphone.

Step 2: Enter your Serial Number and Airtime Pin

Next, you have to enter the serial number of the phone. This number is printed on the red activation card and is also found in the prepaid menu of the phone.

If you have a physical airtime card, scratch off the paint on the back to reveal the pin number and enter it on the form. If you don’t have an airtime pin, then you have to enter your credit card information.

Straight Talk phones do not come with any starter airtime, so you can’t activate your phone without adding airtime.

Step 3: Create an Straight Talk Account

You have to create an account to save your information in a profile. With Tracfone and Net10 this step is optional, but it is required here.

If you already have an account from activating a previous handset, you can just login at this point.

Step 4: Enter Account Info

Now you have to enter you personal info such as name, address, etc.

Step 5: Activation Call

Finally, you actually have to make a call to a 5-digit number, and then call an actual phone number to really complete activation. Once you make the call, you will receive a message. Frankly, when I made the call, my signal strength was not all that great so I have no idea what the message was. Everything must have gone okay, because the screen said that activation was successful, and it needed to restart.

Once the phone restarts, you can find out your new phone number from the prepaid menu (or from the caller id if you call a phone in the house with caller id).

After restarting, you have to call a number. During this first call, you choose your language preference, and then the call goes through.

Update

This step was for CDMA-type phones that run on the Verizon network. The activation procedure for GSM phones (with models numbers ending in the letter G) should not require an activation call.

Step 6: Enroll in Auto Refill (Optional)

A Straight Talk airtime PIN is good for 30 days, whether you’re on the $30 or $45 plan. Minutes and service time do not roll over. If you recharge too early, you waste a few service days (and minutes), and if you recharge too late, you lose your service (and phone number). So the most efficient thing to do is sign up for auto-refills when you activate Straight Talk phones. You can enroll in the auto-refill at the end of the activation process or sign up for Auto-Refill.

Your other option is to buy additional airtime PINs and place them in “reserve”.

How frustrating it is when you are in desperate need of a call, and the signal suddenly gives away? Yeah, It feels like punching a wall. Thus, you must know how to Update the Straight Talk Phone Signal right now!

While the fault is generally due to the lousy signal density of the area you are in, there can be other factors such as incorrect APN settings, outdated PRL, or just awful network coverage of your network carrier.

Straight Talk is a company that is generally put into the limelight as a carrier with weak networks. While the packages and deals of Straight Talk are undoubtedly top-notch, in some areas, the signal coverage of Straight Talk is not that good.

As we all know, lousy network signals ruin a whole day of celebration, as you can’t receive or send calls, messages, or MMS. You can’t browse the internet or play online games. Basically, without proper network support and update straight talk phone towers, a smartphone is just a brick with potential.

To get rid of this problem, we have put together some steps to help you get a better network signal. These steps will help you update the Straight Talk phone signal and improve the strength and quality of that signal.

What is Straight Talk?

Straight Talk is another child of Tracfone and Walmart. It’s a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) offering both CDMA and GSM support.

The CDMA network uses Verizon’s or Sprint’s CDMA 1xRTT wireless networks, and the GSM side uses either T-Mobile’s or AT&T’s GSM networks.

Straight Talk is only available via Walmart, or you can buy it directly from its website.

Methods to Update Straight Talk Phone Signal

Update your APN Settings

Access Point Network or APN establishes an identity proof for you that helps your carrier distinguish between you and other users. It helps them determine the data plan you opted for, the network you are using (2G, 3G, or 4G LTE), and the type of connection best suited for your device.

Weak networks or no network at all may all be due to improper APN settings. Here are the APN settings for New and Old Straight Talk devices to update Straight Talk Phone Signal.

Update your PRL

Preferred Roaming List or PRL is a database used for CDMA services to Update Straight Talk Phone Signal. The carrier maintains and provides it and uses it when your SIM tries to connect to the network tower.

It gives the data about which radio bands, service provider IDs, etc., should be searched and connects the device to that particular tower fulfilling all the requirements.

Needless to say, if your PRL list is not up to date, the device won’t connect to the tower best suited for the area, and the networks automatically become weak.

Here are the steps to take to reset your PRL and update Straight Talk Phone Signal:

For Straight Talk Verizon Phone

To update your PRL on Straight Talk Verizon CDMA Phones, dial *22891. This will let the company servers know you requested an update, and they will refresh your PRL list.

For 4G LTE Straight Talk Phones

There is no unique code to update PRL on 4G LTE phones. Instead, they update the PRL automatically upon reboot.

To ensure the PRL is updated, turn off your smartphone and remove the SIM card. Then switch the phone back without a SIM card. This would provide your PRL is updated upon reboot.

Insert the SIM back, and you should see an instant difference in network quality if PRL was the issue before.

Conclusion

We have tried to include all the possible and practical methods to help you update the Straight Talk Phone Signal no matter what device or carrier you are using.

In more than 90% of the cases, the problem is with incorrect APN or outdated PRL settings, covered extensively above.

If you are still facing some issues, the fault may lie in the device itself. For example, the network receiver might malfunction, and you should take the device to a repair shop.

Well, that’s it for now! We hope, after going through this guide, you are getting much better signals than before.

Love your current phone but wish it cost a little less every month? Straight Talk can help. We have a simple, three-step process for bringing your own phone that can help you save around $45 a month, all while keeping your current number and network. The process can seem daunting, but if you follow these steps, you’ll be on your way.

Step 1: Check if your phone is compatible

Click here and follow the instructions to check compatibility. You’ll be asked to provide your IMEI, MEID or ESM number (we’ll show you how to find it) and where the phone will be used.

Step 2: Get a SIM or Access Code and pick a plan

You can shop quickly here. Our $45 Unlimited* plan offers up to 8x more high speed data than other no contract $45 plans and saves your around $45/month.

Note: Don’t let GSM vs. CDMA scare you. Technically, these acronyms denote how data is converted into the radio waves that your cell phone sends/receives. Different carriers use different technologies, so the difference between you using an Access Code or SIM card in our BYOP program basically depends on your carrier.

Step 3: Activate your device

See how to activate your device here and feel the freedom.

We hope we outlined our Bring Your Own Phone (BYOP) as clearly as possible. Please ask us any questions in the comments, and enjoy saving up to $950 per year!

*30 day Unlimited Plans include 2.5 GB of high speed data per 30 day cycle. After 2.5 GB, your data speed will be reduced for the remainder of the 30 day cycle. High speed data is restored once a new 30 day service plan is redeemed at the end of the 30 day plan cycle. Other limitations, terms and conditions of service apply. Straight Talk reserves the right to terminate your service for unauthorized or abnormal usage. Please refer always to the latest Terms and Conditions of service.

While using the internet, no matter the purpose, nobody wants their data to be limited. And we all have experienced data throttle on our online activities with multiple ISPs.

How about if there was a way, or some hacks and tips, that would let you surpass the restrictions these companies impose on your data plan and use your hotspot as you like? Well, there sure is away.

If you are a Straight Talk user, then this article will give you a Straight Talk Mobile Hotspot Hack and tips that will allow you to enjoy using a throttle-free hotspot and unlimited data on all your devices.

Activate Straight Talk Mobile Hotspot Hack

First things first, find the best suitable data plan that will also enable Straight Talk Mobile Hotspot Hack on your device. The best ones are the single-line and multi-line data plans.

This is because they allow you to use your mobile phone as a WI-FI tether to get internet across all your devices. You also will use the MVNC provider to enable the Straight Talk Hotspot Hack for your data plan.

Here is a step-by-step guide to Straight Talk Hotspot Hack that will allow you to use unlimited free data and share across multiple devices;

  1. Choose your monthly plan before anything else and make sure it includes a hotspot
  2. Go to the main website, straightalk.com
  3. At the menu, select activate/reactivate
  4. Choose the “activate my direct call service” option and click continue
  5. Enter the serial number in the MEID or Serial Number box
  6. You can find your serial number from the Straight Talk Red Card or you can check at the back of your hotspot
  7. Enter your postal code (where you are using the hotspot from)
  8. In the Service Pins Box, there is a data card with pins. Enter these pins
  9. You must have at least a Straight Talk Data Card to use the hotspot (this must at least be 1GB $15). You can always purchase it anytime if you didn’t purchase it during the activation process
  10. Login to your Straight Talk account by entering
  11. Your email
  12. Password
  13. If you don’t yet have an account, you can always easily create one

How to Use the Straight Talk Mobile Hotspot Hack?

Here is a detailed guide that bypasses the restrictions put in place by Straight Talk:

  1. Scan to find your hotspot through your device. This could be your computer from another device like your mobile phone or tablet
  2. Turn on the wireless options on your other devices
  3. Find your network under the WI-FI settings with the last three numbers of the U.M.X.$ and the serial numbers
  4. After the hotspot network establishes the connection, you can now open the internet browser
  5. Enter 192.168.1.1 in the search bar
  6. This will open a page that will prompt you to enter a username and password
  7. You can add any default values and input your username as admin. Use the last three digits of your Hotspot serial number, with the symbol $ for the password
  8. Give it a minute for the activation process to complete
  9. When a message “installation complete” pops up, you are good to get started
  10. As soon as the activation is done, a huge setting button will be displayed on your screen
  11. Click on it to adjust settings and make sure your connection is secure
  12. This allows the hotspot to be open by default and anyone can get access to it and use it
  13. If you need to make any changes, just go to the WI-FI tab, select any option you want, and follow the instructions
  14. If you get stuck, refresh the 192.168.1.1 page to see the WI-FI tab

How to Stop Straight Talk Data Throttle?

Before you start using your network, always confirm whether Straight Talk is currently active or down, to make sure there wouldn’t be any glitches when you get started with your activities.

Sometimes a drop in network is usually caused by the throttle limit that is issued to your data plan. Even if you have an unlimited plan, you may find that your internet speed is reduced down to 2GB.

This is annoying, especially when you have an unlimited data plan. However, you can always stop these restrictions through a couple of ways;

Select a VPN Service for Your Speed

The simple reason for your data throttling could be your location and your ISP. Some companies will still measure your data consumption no matter your plan, resulting in a downgrade from high-speed internet to the slowest one.

If your Geolocation is the main cause of your data throttle, then using a VPN is the solution to fix this issue. Make sure to choose a good quality network that will not only remove the measure in your data consumption but also secure your network and all your online activities.

Change the APN Settings

There are two options when it comes to Straight Talk service and you can apply either one of them for a better quality network. Alongside other benefits of unlimited free hotspot data, changing the APN settings might just improve your internet speed and network.

Use a Micro Sim Adaptor

This is also a great way to remove the data throttle on your hotspot. Just get a micro sim card adaptor, make sure it is one size larger and put it in the portable hotspot to get unlimited data. The only annoying aspect of this, however, is that you should be ready to be switching the sim card back and forth to your phone when you need to use it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are some most commonly asked questions about Straight Talk Mobile Hotspot Hack, and data plans, you will find helpful;

Can you add more hotspot data?

Yes. You can always buy more Straight Talk data with data add-ons. These also allow you a throttle-free, high-speed internet connection anytime you need extra data on your current plan. If you remain with unused data, it will be rolled over to your new plan.

Are there ways to get Mobile Hotspot for Free?

There are other multiple options you can always explore on your phone. You can try out USB tethering, Bluetooth tethering to share data or even a portable WI-FI hotspot. These services don’t cost anything and are readily available.

Quick answer: You can switch to a no-contract wireless provider and keep your own phone with the Straight Talk Keep Your Own Phone SIM Activation Kit.

There are a wide range of mobile service providers to choose from, and each carrier – from the big names to the regional options – offer something different. If your current carrier doesn’t quite measure up to your standards, it may be time to switch to a provider that better suits your needs and interests. Keep reading for four straightforward tips on changing your mobile carrier without having to purchase a new phone.

  1. Check whether your phone uses GSM or CDMA technology. GSM devices use SIMs, so they can usually be transferred from network to network without hassle. CDMA devices, however, used unique electronic codes until the arrival of 4G – when they opted to also use SIMs – so older CDMA phones may require you to get in touch with a customer service rep of your new carrier if you wish to switch. Newer CDMA devices that are 4G LTE-compatible are much more versatile.
  2. Unlock your phone. When you purchase a device from a carrier, it’s often locked for use with that specific carrier. You might be able to unlock it if you’ve fully paid for the phone and have satisfied any conditions the carrier may have set. Once it’s unlocked, however, you’ll enjoy the same freedom you’d have if you purchased the device straight from its manufacturer.
  3. Confirm compatibility with a new carrier. Many phone carriers feature their own online compatibility checkers, where you can input your phone’s information to see if it’s compatible with that carrier. These valuable tools – like the one employed by Straight Talk – help streamline the transfer process.
  4. Do your research. Bear in mind that with all the phones and carriers available, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution to keeping your device through a carrier switch. Delving into the various resources on the Internet and using the aforementioned compatibility checkers can help bring clarity to the situation.
