Troubleshooting Bluetooth

Bluetooth section is missing in Devices option

The issue is probably related to the Bluetooth driver. To check if the Bluetooth driver is installed:

  • Click the Start button, and go to Device Manager to verify if the driver is present and installed correctly.

Bluetooth driver is installed but Bluetooth section is still missing

This happens sometimes when your computer’s Bluetooth hardware requires a special driver which is not available with Windows. In such a case, you will find the appropriate driver either in the driver CD that came along with your computer or on the computer manufacturer’s website. You can go to manufacturer’s website to download the Bluetooth driver and install it in your computer.

How to activate bluetooth in windows 8

Now, most Windows 10 laptops come with Bluetooth, which is a short-distance wireless technique that can simplify the communication between devices and the internet. Bluetooth is turned on by default in Windows 10. If you don’t use it all that often, you might as well turn it off in case it drains your laptop battery. Part 1: How to turn on/off Bluetooth on Windows 10 laptop

Step 1: Click Win icon on the lower left corner of the Windows 10 desktop to bring up the Start menu. Then click Settings to open PC settings. (Alternatively, press Win + I keyboard shortcuts to quickly bring up Settings app.)

Part 2: Why can’t you turn on Bluetooth on your Windows 10 laptop

If you don’t see the Bluetooth section on Devices or you are missing the Bluetooth switch button on the Bluetooth settings, it may be because your laptop PC comes with older hardware and doesn’t support Bluetooth at all. Or there are issues with your Bluetooth driver. You can try to download and reinstall the latest Bluetooth driver from your laptop’s manufacturer support website.

Bluetooth! That wireless feature of many newer laptops that lets you connect headphones, earpieces, keyboards and even mobile devices. You don’t use it all that often, do you? It drains the battery when you’re not using it.

In Windows 7, you’d turn on or off Bluetooth by entering the Device Manager and hunting around a wall of text for the adapter to disable. Managing Bluetooth in Windows 8 is much more user friendly.

Hi Herta. I’m Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Try the Bluetooth troubleshooter at Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.

Try Updating the Bluetooth driver from the PC maker’s Support Downloads webpage for your exact model. Install it even if it’s the same or newer than the one in Device Manager reached by right clicking the Start button.

Right click Start button to access Device Manager, locate Bluetooth device (if necessary from View tab Show Hidden Devices), on Driver tab see if Roll Back is available, if not try Update Driver, first automatically, then Browse, then Let Me Pick to try all previously installed Drivers.

If these fail try to Uninstall the Driver, restart PC to reinstall.

Then try pairing again, if necessary run the Bluetooth Troubleshooter again.

If this was caused by Windows Updates then you can check which were installed at Settings>Update & Security>Windows Update under Installed Updates, then uninstall them from the link there, and hide with the Hide Updates tool downloaded from here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f2.

You can also use System Restore to get before the problem began, then check for Updates with the Hide Update tool and hide them: http://home.bt.com/tech-gadgets/computing/how-t.

Go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki.

Start with Step 4 to turn off Startup freeloaders which can conflict and cause issues, then Step 7 to check for infection the most thorough way, then step 10 to check for damaged System Files. Then continue with the other steps to go over your install most thoroughly.

If nothing else helps then run a Repair Install by installing the Media Creation Tool and choosing from it to Upgrade Now. This solves many problems and will also bring it up to the latest version which you need anyway and by the most stable method. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it’s resolved.

I have an Envy 4-1130us ultrabook that is really nice, but I can’t get my bluetooth to work. It did work for about a week, but somehow is now failing. I attempted to go into pc settings > wireless and turn the bluetooth to “on” but it is not allowing this. I have also tried using f12, but it is only activating the wi fi. FYI – I was using the bluetooth for a wireless mouse. Anything else I might try?

How to activate bluetooth in windows 8

I am going to tell you an amazing trick to add Bluetooth to PC. Users can add Bluetooth devices on Windows 7, 8, 8.1, and 10. You need to follow few steps to enable to Bluetooth on your PC/Laptop. You can use Bluetooth with or without an external device.

Add Bluetooth to PC

Add Bluetooth utility to your computer. It is necessary to do since connecting devices with cables every time is a tedious job. By Bluetooth, you can almost connect any devices like the speakers, projectors without any external peripherals. Check your computer if you have a Bluetooth radio. Your older version of the PC might not provide you built-in Bluetooth. However, Bluetooth is not found on Desktop PCs.

But the newer versions of PCs include Bluetooth radio as a feature too. Cross-check if you have Bluetooth utility by going to the Control Panel àNetwork and InternetàNetwork Connections. You will see various connections like Ethernet, WiFi, and Bluetooth connection (if you have it on your computer). You can also search in the Device Manager for Bluetooth utility. If you don’t have, then the steps are pretty easy to add one.

Requirements for Add Bluetooth to PC/Laptop

You will need a USB hub having multiple ports and USB Bluetooth Adapter. If your PC/laptop has enough, then it is well and good. In this article, I will be using Kinivo BTD-400 USB dongle. This dongle is cheap and is available in the market for Rs. 699 roughly.

Add Bluetooth to PC/Laptop – Installation

This process takes minutes if you are using Windows 8 or 10 as they have Broadcom Bluetooth drivers that easily recognize and will install Bluetooth radio automatically. But the older versions of PC may not be compatible or having Windows 8 or 10 as their OS. For, older versions you need to download Bluetooth Drivers to install Bluetooth radio.

The Kinivo dongle provides these Drivers, and you can download it from them. Another way is by getting Drivers from Broadcom. Download the compatible one for your OS and install it.

Pairing to Add Bluetooth to PC/Laptop

  1. After installing, you need to check if your Bluetooth works. A Bluetooth icon will appear on the taskbar. Just right click on it and choose to add a Bluetooth device.
How to activate bluetooth in windows 8
  2. In Windows 8 or 10, go to the Action Center or go the Settings for Device Pairing. How to activate bluetooth in windows 8
  3. In Windows 7 or older versions, you would see a window asking Choose a device or printer to add to this PC.
  4. It connects to the PC and you are ready to use it.

Conclusion

Most importantly, this is quite an effortless process. You need to spend some money for the dongle and drivers. That is also cost-efficient. Other than that, it is an hour’s job to do so. There are many other dongles available in the market if you don’t want to buy the one I have used. Some versions of Windows wouldn’t ask for pairing and will directly connect to the device.

Nowadays, inbuilt Bluetooth requires pairing from both sides the device and your PC and mostly happens while connecting your Mobile devices. Check if your device hardware needs some particular driver to install Bluetooth radio. You will need to go through some setups to add it. I hope you found this article useful.
