How to activate a visa debit card

Activate your US Bank credit card online, by phone or by using your US Bank mobile app. No matter which option you choose, the card activation process should take just a few minutes. Here’s how to activate with each method.

How to activate your US Bank card online

Here’s how to activate your US Bank card online:

  1. Visit usbank.com/credit-cards/activate-credit-card
  2. If you have an online account, log in and activate; if not, click Enroll and activate
  3. Chose the type of card — personal or business
  4. Enter your card account number, the last four digits of your SSN and your PIN if you have one

How to activate your US Bank card by phone

If calling customer support is your preferred method to activate your US Bank card:

  1. Call the number on the card’s sticker if you have one; otherwise, call 800-285-8585
  2. Follow the prompts and provide your personal information and card number

How to activate your US Bank card with a mobile app

Your third option is to activate your US Bank card with a mobile app.

  1. Download the US Bank app for iOS or Android
  2. Log in with the same information as your online banking account
  3. Find your new card under your accounts and activate it

Getting started with your US Bank card

Now that you’ve activated your US Bank credit card, you can start using it. Here are a few ways to kick off the new addition to your wallet.

  • Open your US Bank online account. Once you have your US Bank account verification, you can open your online account. This account lets you monitor your account activity and perform other card related tasks, such as let you double-check the activation status of your card, review your card features and turn on autopay. Here’s how to open your online account.
    1. Go to US Bank’s website.
    2. Click on Log In in the top right corner of the screen.
    3. In the drop-down menu, click on “Create a Username and Password.”
    4. Fill out the requested information and confirm your information.
  • Set up autopay. Turning on autopay is something you should do before nearly anything else. By turning on autopay, you’ll never have to worry about missing a payment. And if you set your payment to your full statement amount each month, you won’t have to worry about interest either.
  • Set up your PIN. You’ll need a credit card PIN if you plan on traveling abroad or performing a cash advance. You can set up your PIN by contacting US Bank either online or on the number listed on the back of your card.
  • Download the US Bank app. If you didn’t activate your card using the US Bank app, you’ll still want to download it and set it up. It offers a handy way of monitoring your card account from anywhere and also allows you to make changes to your account preferences.
  • Add your card to your digital wallet. US Bank allows you to add your credit card to all three major digital wallets, including Apple Pay.
  • Earn rewards. US Bank has several great reward cards to choose from. Depending on your card, you’ll want to make sure you use it for specific purchases that will maximize your cash back or points earned.
  • Redeem your rewards. Once you’ve built up enough rewards, it’s time to cash out. If you have a US Bank card that earns points, you’ll want to make sure you redeem them for the most value possible.

Bottom line

You can activate your US Bank card by enrolling in US Bank’s online banking, calling the number on the card’s sticker or by using your mobile app. Luckily, this process is similar to that of activating any other credit card. As soon as you’re ready, consider adding a second card to your wallet to potentially increase your credit limit and get you additional perks.

Visa Prepaid Q+A

Visa Prepaid card is the quick, easy, and secure way to pay online or in-person—24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The all-purpose Visa Prepaid card is a reloadable prepaid card that you can use to withdraw cash, pay bills, or make purchases at participating retailers and service providers, in-person or online. You can fund the reloadable Visa Prepaid card through a variety of ways, such as through direct deposit or with cash at a participating retail location.

It is accepted anywhere that Visa Debit cards are accepted. And you don’t have to worry about overdraft fees since your spend cannot exceed the balance on your card.

Prepaid cards vs. debit cards:

A prepaid card is not linked to a checking account. Instead, it is pre-loaded with a balance of funds. Then each purchase you make is deducted from that balance.

In most cases, you can’t spend more money than you have already loaded onto your prepaid card. Overspending or overdrafts can occur in some cases where a prepaid card may be linked with a checking. And while Visa Prepaid cards are protected by Visa’s Zero Liability policy,* some prepaid cards have fewer consumer protections than debit cards, including those that apply if the card is lost, stolen, or other unauthorized charges appear.

Prepaid cards vs. credit cards:

When you use a credit card you are borrowing money and building up a balance of debt you owe. With prepaid cards, you’re spending money that has already been loaded onto the card. Unlike credit cards, prepaid cards don’t incur interest charges and don’t require a credit check to obtain.

*Visa’s Zero Liability policy does not apply to certain commercial card and anonymous prepaid card transactions or transactions not processed by Visa.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I can use my Visa Debit enabled ATB debit card at an online retailer?

Your new debit card can be used at any Canadian online retailer that accepts Visa Debit. It will also work at retailers that operate in Canada, but originate from outside of Canada, who only accept Visa. View a list of Canadian online retailers and charities that accept Visa Debit here.

How do I use my Visa Debit enabled ATB debit card?

Your Visa Debit enabled ATB debit card works like the previous ATB Interac flash debit cards, but processes transactions differently depending on how and where you use it.

    • To use it online:
      • Select Visa Debit (if available) or Visa at checkout.
Note: When using your ATB debit card online, you may encounter Visa Secure—an additional verification program that helps protect you from fraud. To learn more, see Visa Secure.
      • Select “credit” if prompted to choose between debit or credit.
      • Enter your PIN, if requested. Some retailers will ask you to sign for your purchase.

Can I use my Visa Debit enabled ATB debit card at non-ATB automated banking machines (ABMs) in Canada and internationally, and will I pay fees if I do?

Yes, you can use your ATB debit card at non-ATB ABMs, but first, check to make sure the ABM will accept your debit card.

In Canada, your card can be used at any ABM that accepts Interac. At non-ATB ABMs, you are limited to cash withdrawals only.

There is a standard $1.50 fee for using a non-ATB ABM. You’ll also be charged a fee by the ABM’s owner, which you’ll be prompted to approve before proceeding with the transaction. Depending on your account type, you may receive a credit of up to $4.50 back into your account to cover these fees.

Will I be charged a foreign exchange fee if I withdraw money using my Visa Debit enabled ATB debit card from an ABM located outside of Canada?

Yes, if you withdraw money from an ABM that dispenses a currency that is not Canadian dollars, you will be charged a foreign exchange fee of 2.9%. For more details, see Additional Services and Associated Charges

What do I do if my ATB debit card is lost or stolen outside of Canada, or if I suspect fraudulent transactions?

As soon as you can, call us collect at:

      • Personal and Business: 001-403-245-8110
      • ATB Wealth: 001-403-731-3777

We’ll flag your card as lost or stolen and arrange to send you a new one as soon as possible.

Can I use my ATB debit card with my mobile wallet?

Yes, you can make mobile payments at merchants that accept both Interac and mobile wallet payments.

Does my debit card have transaction limits and/or ABM withdrawal limits?

Yes, there are two different types of limits that are assigned to your debit card—one limit on how much money you can take out at an ABM at any one time and throughout the day (ABM withdrawal limit), and another limit on how much you can spend throughout the day using your debit card at stores, businesses and online (spending limit).

When I shop internationally (in person or online), how is my purchase amount converted into Canadian dollars?

The foreign currency purchase amount will be converted to Canadian dollars (CAD) using the applicable exchange rate set by Visa on the day the transaction is posted to your account.

Following the conversion to CAD, you will be charged an additional fee of 2.9% for using your ATB debit card (through the Visa network) at a merchant or ABM that charges in a currency other than CAD.

What happens if I make a purchase where there are holds needed?

The funds will be taken from your account when you make the purchase, including any advanced purchases or holds, such as reserving hotels or car rentals.

To tell if there are holds on your account, open ATB Online or the ATB Personal banking app and look at the account balances. If the available balance is less than the balance in your account, the difference between the two amounts is the hold amount.

How to activate a visa debit card

Based in India, HDFC Bank's heavy focus on new banking technologies has made it popular with consumers. HDFC's debit cardholders have access to a variety of benefits, including discounts on fuel, shopping and travel, as well as cash back on purchases. Once you've received your HDFC Visa debit card, you'll need to activate it by using it at an ATM, logging into your NetBanking account or calling the activation phone number.

      Easily Activate HDFC Debit Card

If you've been approved for an HDFC Visa debit card, you'll get a welcome kit in the mail. This will include your debit card along with an ATM personal identification number sealed in an envelope. You can take your debit card to an ATM and, using the PIN in the envelope, activate the card. At this point, you'll be asked to create a new PIN for your card.

      Video of the Day

You may also be able to activate your HDFC debit card using NetBanking. Log into NetBanking and go to Debit Card. You'll find instructions there on changing your PIN for your card. If you just need to change the PIN, you can do this at any time by going to the Change Password section of your NetBanking account.

With some locations, you'll be given an HDFC credit card activation phone number. That number should be included with your welcome kit. Once you've dialed the number, you'll be prompted to input the PIN or given security questions to verify your identity. After the verification, follow the prompts to activate your card.

      Activate for International Use

If you plan to travel outside of India, you'll need to make sure you're covered for international use. Your bank needs to know what currency you'll be using, the amount you'll likely spend each day and the timeframe for your trip. You can activate HDFC debit cards for international use easily by logging into your NetBanking account.

To activate your HDFC Visa debit card, go to Cards and select the Debit Cards menu. Click on Request and choose Set International/Domestic Usage. You'll then click on Card to Be Enabled for International and Domestic Use. You can also choose Modify International Limit to set a daily spending limit while you're traveling.

      Activate HDFC Credit Card

If you have a credit card rather than a debit card, the activation process will be similar. You can use the HDFC credit card activation phone number to contact banking services and activate it, or you can go to your nearest ATM and activate it by inputting the PIN and changing it.

For those who choose to use the card at an ATM rather than by calling the HDFC credit card activation phone number, there will be a confirmation text message once your PIN has been successfully changed. This is a security measure to protect you in the event someone else intercepts your welcome kit and tries to activate your card using the PIN. If you get such a message and you haven't activated your credit card, contact HDFC immediately.

      Report Lost HDFC Debit Card

A lost debit or credit card can be stressful, but don't panic. Your HDFC card includes protection against unauthorized transactions, giving you zero liability for those purchases. Just as when you activate HDFC debit cards, you have a variety of options for reporting a lost or stolen HDFC debit card, including calling one of HDFC's banking numbers, which are listed at the HDFC Phone Banking site page.

As soon as you realize the card is missing, you should report it. If you're still looking, though, you can block any transactions from going through by logging into your NetBanking account. Go to Debit Card, then Debit Card Hotlisting and select the card you want to hotlist. You'll input a reason for hotlisting it and your card will be officially blocked from use.

You have three ways to activate your Visa ® Gold check card.

      • Make a withdrawal or purchase that requires you to enter your personal identification number (PIN).
      • Call 800.466.0040.
      • Send an online banking secure message requesting card activation. Provide the last four digits of your card and indicate the card type in your request. Reminder: Do not send this confidential information by email unless you use the online banking secure message.

      WHAT WE BELIEVE

The Bible, consisting of all the books of the Old and New Testaments, is the inspired, only infallible, authoritative Word of God. The Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are without error or misstatement in their moral and spiritual teaching and record of historical facts. They are without error or defect of any kind.

There is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in his virgin birth, his eternal, personal pre-existence, his sinless life, his miracles, his vicarious and atoning death through his shed blood, his bodily resurrection, his ascension to the right hand of the Father, and his personal return in power and glory.

For the salvation of lost and sinful men, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential.

The present ministry of the Holy Spirit is to indwell and enable the Christian to live a godly life.

Resurrection is of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.

We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.
