How to activate a visa credit card

How to activate a visa credit card

The beauty of receiving a Visa gift card is that it gives you the flexibility to use it with any online merchant that accepts Visa debit cards. Depending on how your card was purchased, it may be already activated when you receive it. If not, you’ll have to activate it before you can use it, and if you want to use your Visa gift card online, you”ll also have to register it.

Activate Your Card

A Visa card from a retail outlet is activated at the cash register, and you’ll receive the activation slip. Some Visa gifts cards purchased online need to be activated once you receive them in the mail.

In this case, follow the activation instructions on the little sticker that comes on the front of the card. Typically, this requires you to call an 800 number or access a website to enter the 16-digit card number and associated security code. For additional security, sign the card on the back as soon as you receive it.

Register Your Card

To register your card for online use, locate the issuer’s 800 number or web address. You’ll find this information on the back of the Visa card or in a leaflet that comes with the card. Call the telephone number or access the website to get started.

You’ll need to provide the card code and card security number, as well as your personal information, including your name, address and telephone number. Use the same format for your personal information that you plan to use when making your online purchases. This is important as many payment processors check to verify that the information matches.

Use Your Card Online

At checkout you’ll be given a variety of payment options. This may include PayPal, Amazon or a debit or credit card. You need to select the debit/credit card option and then specifically choose the Visa card for payment. Enter your personal information exactly as you did to register your card and then add the card code and security code.

Make a Partial Payment

Cardholders should always check their Visa gift card balance before making an online purchase. This can be done using the 800 number on the back of the card and following the prompts.

If the total amount on the card is less than the total purchase price, it may be possible for you to use the remainder of your card to buy a store e-gift card. In most cases, this is a code sent to your email inbox. You can then use that egift card code toward your total balance.

This merchant processor offers a similar process across all its providers.

With most Visa providers, you can activate your card in three ways — by phone, online or through the mobile app. But not all cards displaying the Visa logo allow for app activation. Here’s how to activate your Visa using each method.

How to activate your Visa card online

Online is your fastest option, even accounting for the step of creating an online account, and should take you just a few minutes. Enroll with your Social Security number and date of birth, and then follow four steps:

  1. Log in to your online account.
  2. Look for your new credit card under Accounts.
  3. Enter your card number, expiration date and CVV/CVC.
  4. Enter your date of birth and Social Security number, if required by your provider.

How to activate your Visa card by phone

Activate your card with a phone call in three steps:

  1. Call the number on the back of your card or the number in the sticker on your card.
  2. Request to activate your card.
  3. Provide your card’s information and personal identifying details.

How to activate your Visa card with a mobile app

Most card providers let you activate your card with the provider’s mobile app in three steps:

  1. Download the app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Log in with your online account information.
  3. Look for your card under Accounts.

Getting started with your Visa card

Once you’ve activated, you can double-check your status by signing in to your provider account or mobile app. After you’re confirmed, you can start using your Visa card immediately. There are a few great ways to start using your credit card depending on the card you activated:

  1. Set up autopay. One of the best first steps you can take when opening a new card account is setting up autopay. This ensures you’ll never miss a payment and accidentally rack up unwanted late fees. To avoid interest, consider paying your monthly statement in full each month. The steps to set up auto pay slightly differs depending on your card provider, so check out our provider specific activation series for more information on your card.
  2. Set up your PIN. If you plan on traveling abroad or taking out a cash advance, you’ll need a credit card PIN. You can set up your PIN by contacting your provider either online or on the number listed on the back of your card.
  3. Download the provider app. Your card provider app lets you easily manage your account on the go as well as check in on your accrued rewards and perks. Each card provider has its own app, so check out our individual provider activation pages for more information.
  4. Check out your perks. Many Visa cards come with built-in Visa perks and features. Some of these can offer convenience, such as a concierge service, while others can keep you protected during travel. These perks are listed in the Visa guide to benefits you receive with your card.
  5. Add your card to your digital wallet. You can add most Visa cards to your digital wallet, though compatibility comes down to your provider and specific wallet.
  6. Earn rewards. If you picked up a Visa rewards credit card, you can start spending on categories that will offer a big return for your wallet.
  7. Redeem rewards. Once you’ve built up your reward points or miles, you can redeem them for big value. Our full redemption guide can help you earn the most bang for your buck.

Provider activation guides

Bottom line

All Visa credit cards have the same activation procedure as any other credit card — online or by phone, with many providers extending the convenience of easy activation through a mobile app.

Now that your Visa card is active and ready to use, consider adding one of the best second credit cards to your wallet for additional perks, the chance to earn a signup bonus and or increase your credit limit.

Oportun: The True Cost of a Loan: Based on research commissioned by Oportun and conducted by the Financial Health Network (FHN), the total savings number equals the difference between the average cost of other widely available alternative lending products that customers may have used and the average cost of an Oportun loan of the same amount, multiplied by Oportun first-time borrowers. FHN analyzed the rates, fees, and terms for payday, pawn, auto-title, installment, and rent-to-own products for customers in Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, and Utah and calculated the total cost of those products for common loan amounts. FHN considered the loan repayment structure and time frame for each product, borrower income, the potential for rollovers and refinancings, and legal parameters that prevent or constrain borrowing. Oportun updates the model quarterly to calculate the total amount that Oportun first-time borrowers have saved since 2006 in interest and fees compared to the alternative products. The actual savings for each customer will vary based on specific loan terms and alternative products available in your area.

  • Use your credit card in a shop by inserting your new card in to the EFTPOS machine and entering your PIN. You’ll now be able to use your card for all types of transactions.
