The number four mobile operator has followed Verizon and T-Mobile in abandoning phone subsidies leaving only AT&T to keep the industry standard.

Users that stay in the program are eligible for a new phone every time Apple launches one as long as they remain in the plan. The corporation has made a concerted attempt to entice clients with a lease deal tailored to iPhone lovers.

If so, then this guide will explain the steps that you should take to make sure that there is no interruption in your service.

Why Might You Switch Phones on Sprint’s Network?

How to activate a sprint phone

One of the most common reasons that people give for switching phones is that they want a new one because of the latest technological advancements that have been made in the intervening years since they got their last one. Things like voice assist, Apple Pay with the iPhone, or facial recognition replacing passcodes are all the incentives you may need to get a new device.

Another possibility is that your old phone doesn’t work as well as it once did. Though phones are designed to last you for several years, time catches up to all of them. Websites might be slow to load on your device, or the aesthetics may seem outdated. Your touchscreen might not be as responsive as it used to be. Any of those could be what convinces you that it’s time to get rid of your old phone in favor of a top-of-the-line new one.

What You’ll Need to Do First before Switching phone?

How to activate a sprint phone

When you want to switch phones but keep the same cellular network, the steps are going to be similar regardless of which company it is. In the case of Sprint, what you’ll want to do first is get yourself the new phone.

You can purchase or lease one through the company, or you can buy one elsewhere. If you don’t want to go through Sprint, then you have many options as to where you can purchase a new phone. You could go through a brick-and-mortar electronics store, or there are various online outlets and entities that will sell you a phone.

What is the Difference Between GSM and CDMA?

If you don’t buy your phone through Sprint, though, then what you have to be sure of is that the new one that you got works on their network. There are some phones that aren’t going to, and the reason is that they are GSM compliant. GSM is the global system for mobile communications. Some phones are equipped with this technology, and if they are, then they won’t work on certain networks. Sprint’s network happens to be one of those.

Sprint uses CDMA technology in their phones, as does Verizon and some others. If your new phone is CDMA-equipped, then the chances are high that the model will be acceptable. Remember that GSM and CDMA are two competing standards, so their devices are not interoperable.

If you’re not sure about the kind of new phone that you want, then contact Sprint through the help number on their website or via Live Chat before you buy it. The last thing you want is to purchase your new phone and then find out that it won’t work with Sprint.

How to Swap to a New Phone on Your Sprint Account?

Once you have your new phone, make sure that it is all set up and fully charged. Next, go to the Sprint website. Under Activate at the top right-hand side of the screen, there is a dropdown menu. You should see an option there to activate your phone replacement.

Have the new phone’s box handy just in case you need any of the information there. There is a yellow tab that says Activate Your Phone. Click on it and follow the instructions. Make sure that you’re doing this on a laptop, desktop, or tablet. If you try this activation process with a cell phone, then it won’t work.

During the process, you’ll be asked for the new phone’s ESN, the electronic serial number. That’s what you’ll be looking for on the packaging. However, each phone also has that number somewhere on the physical device. The only issue is that with some phones, that number might be somewhere inside the device itself, and you don’t want to have to go through the trouble of opening it up to get to it. That’s why it’s so much easier if you can read it off of the packaging.

Is there a Way to Activate the New Phone Without Using Sprint’s Website?

Maybe you want to activate the new phone, but you would prefer not to have to go through the steps on the website. There is a way to avoid that method if you’d like. What you would do is contact Sprint’s service department using a landline telephone. In addition to your new phone’s ESN and make and model information, you’ll want to have all of your account info handy. The customer service agent will use it to verify that you are who you claim to be, so be sure that you know the answer to any security questions that you’ve set up.

At a minimum, they’ll want to know the name on your account, your Sprint mobile number, and your account’s personal ID number. You’ll follow the customer service agent’s instructions, which should consist of you performing some simple programming steps on the new phone’s keypad. Once you have done that, the phone should power down and then back on again. After it’s fully operational once more, the device should be ready for your use.

Can I Switch Phones on Sprint by Swapping Out the SIM Cards?

How to activate a sprint phone

Now, wait a minute, you may be thinking. I’ve heard that with some cellular service providers, I can simply switch out the SIM cards between two phones, assuming those cards are compatible. Why can’t I just do that with two phones on the Sprint network, assuming that the same company made both devices?

As it turns out, that won’t work with Sprint. SIM cards are only for access to the LTE network, which the company doesn’t use. SIM cards are freely swappable with some networks, like AT&T, T-Mobile, and some others, if the same manufacturer made the devices. While this would be another nice option to have, it’s not on the table if you want to stick with Sprint.

Still, though, switching is relatively easy as long as you make sure that the new phone you have is one that is compatible with Sprint and their CDMA-enabled network. Once you’ve purchased that new phone and confirmed that it’s usable, you can either take your device to a Sprint store and have them swap you over, or you can contact them via a landline or their website and do it yourself.

Once that’s done, the process is complete, and you’ll be free to enjoy your new device. If you own your old one outright, you could also sell it at this point. That should recoup some of the money that you spent on the new device, which won’t be cheap if you purchased a brand-new model.

How to activate a sprint phone

You can unlock your Sprint cell phone in a few simple steps.
The very first thing you need to do is make sure you OWN your phone. This might be a problem for Sprint Flex customers who tend to rent their phones in 18-month increments. After that the first step is to make sure your phone has been active on the sprint network for 50 days..
Second, your account is in good standing meaning no unpaid bills or anything like that..
Third, your phone can’t be lost or stolen..
Lastly, your phone needs to be fully paid off. If you’re on Sprint Flex Lease, you HAVE to go through the “end of lease purchase option”. This means you’ll pay a large lump sum to own your phone after the lease is over. You need to do this because you can only unlock your phone if you own it outright..
Once you have met all these requirements, Sprint will automatically unlock your phone. If you feel like you’ve met these requirements and your phone isn’t already unlocked, you can call sprint customer service (show the number on screen:888-211-4727). When (or if) you call to unlock your phone, the request may take up to 2-business days. These steps are for Sprint Postpaid customers, if you’re a Sprint Forward customer, you need to call customer care at the number below 855-639-4644.
Having an unlocked phone makes it easier to travel abroad because you’ll be able to use a foreign SIM card. If your phone is unlocked, it’s also easier to sell! And lastly, with an unlocked phone you can switch carriers. Keep in mind that not all phones work with every carrier. Newer phones have the technology to do so… but if your phone is older than 2017 or so… Sprint and Verizon phones are generally compatible, and T-Mobile and AT&T phones are generally compatible..
Now, You might be wondering why cell phone carriers lock phones to their network in the first place. Well it’s an easy way to keep you as their customer!.
If you have a phone that’s network-locked, you might want to stay with your carrier just because it’s easier than figuring out how to unlock it. But don’t let that mind set deter you, today i’ll show you how to unlock your Sprint phone a few simple steps..
Now if you’re in the military you can unlock your phone even if you don’t own it. You just need to show proof of deployment, or proof that you’re either in the military or on the same account as someone in the military. Each line on a military account can unlock two devices each year. That may be a tablet and phone, or smartwatch and phone, whatever you like. If you need help with unlocking your phone, military personnel can go to or call customer support (888-226-7212).

Apparently my iPhone XS Sprint SIM card is not compatible with my spare unlocked iPhone 7. Is this true? I just wanted to switch to the iPhone 7 but neither the T-Mobile store or sprint online support will help me. Not sure what to do from here?

Are you using a t mobile or a sprint sim?

T-Mobile sims should be compatible with both phones. Sprint is not.

Sprint sim. So should I go to my local T-Mobile store and ask for a T-Mobile sim and then move my line to the iPhone 7?

T-Mobile sim is compatible with all tnx compatible phones. Sprint sims are generally generation specific

That is true. Need a different Sprint SIM for iPhone 7, not sure which model off the top of my head though .

Have questions on phone compatibility or bringing your current phone to Sprint? See Sprint's Bring Your Own Phone page.

Be sure to enter your IMEI or MEID with no spaces. The MEID is usually the IMEI without the last digit. An IMEI is 15 digits long, but an MEID is only 14 digits.

How to activate a sprint phone

Sprint and Verizon operate under the same radio network, making devices between the two compatible. It just depends on if Verizon is willing to accept your device and if the phone is unlocked.

Keep in mind, all cell phone networks want your business, so it’s more common than not that Verizon would accept a phone (See table below with phones that work on Verizon).

Read: Sprint vs. Verizon Phone Plans Review

What does sharing the same radio network mean?

Sprint and Verizon operate under the CDMA network, while AT&T and T-Mobile fall under the GSM network. Because of this, it’s infinitely easier to switch from Sprint to Verizon than switching from Sprint to T-Mobile or AT&T.

Here’s the SparkNotes version of what that means: GSM stands for “global system for mobiles,” while CDMA stands for “code division multiple access.” Both acronyms describe the two biggest radio networks used in phones.

Does a phone need to be “unlocked” even though Sprint and Verizon use the same CDMA network?

Yes, because if you want to flash your phone, a.k.a. reprogram it to a new carrier, it needs to be both compatible with Verizon’s network and unlocked in order for Verizon to access it.

Before making the switch, you’ll want to make sure your Sprint account is in good standing too. And be sure to stay on top of any fees associated with switching (such as an early termination fee from Sprint).

How do I unlock my Sprint phone?

In order to unlock your Sprint phone, it needs to have been active on the Sprint network for at least 50 days. Also, you need to fully pay off the device before you’re eligible to switch.

When you’re ready to unlock your phone, contact Sprint and provide the following information:

  • Your Sprint account number and password
  • The last 4 digits of your Social Security number
  • Your cell phone’s ID number (usually the MEID or IMEI number)

Which Sprint cell phones work on Verizon’s network?

Except for the iPhone 5, almost all of Sprint’s newer devices can be unlocked and are compatible with Verizon. Again, it’s just up to Verizon to accept it.

To make sure your phone isn’t one of the bad apples (pun intended), check out Verizon’s page on bringing your own device.

List of phones that work on Verizon’s network

iPhones Android
iPhone 5c Samsung Galaxy S8 / S8+
iPhone 5s Samsung Galaxy Note 8
iPhone 6 / 6 Plus Samsung Galaxy S9 / S9+
iPhone 6s / 6s Plus LG G5
iPhone SE LG G6 / G6+
iPhone 7 / 7 Plus LG V30 / V30+
iPhone 8 / 8 Plus
iPhone X

Will Verizon pay off your Sprint phone?

Unfortunately, no. As we mentioned above, your Sprint phone needs to be paid off in full before you can make the switch from Sprint to Verizon.

Remember, as long as you’ve done your part on Sprint’s end to be eligible to switch carriers and you have an unlocked phone that Verizon accepts, you’re good to go!

How to activate a sprint phone

I purchased an unlocked LG Stylo 5 that was originally on the Sprint network. Verizon said it is not compatible with Verizon and they have not been able to activate it on the Verizon network. This is very disappointing!

I purchased a LG Stylo 5 on ebay which advertised it was unlocked and capable to be added to Verizon. Verizon is saying it is not compatible to the Verizon network because it is a Sprint model number. They did try to add it but wouldn’t work. Very disappointed that I have to return it.

On my way to Aruba a friend told me she heard I could text for free using my iPhone and Sprint mobile provider. I was surprised to hear it after a crappy experience battling lackluster service throughout my US road trip, so the international perk was surprising.

I searched Sprint’s website for a phone number to connect to their customer service line (which was an arduous journey in itself) and eventually called their sales line to be transferred.

Sprint global roaming Customer Service: 888-226-7212

I confirmed the good news: the rumor was true! I never received any notification about it BUT apparently the free international roaming benefit applied to my account automatically as I was using a qualifying iPhone 6s.

Upon further inquiry I learned any Sprint account using iPhone 5 or later and Samsung Galaxy Note 5 or later can access this benefit (basically any LTE/GSM capable device). I’ve since traveled many countries using the perk — including South America, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean.

Here are the Sprint International “Roaming” plan details:

20¢ per minute for phone calls (BUDGET HACK: I now use Sprint’s FREE WIFI CALLING so I avoid global roaming call charges)

Unlimited texting to the USA and many international countries. Here is the list of countries eligible for Sprint Free Global Roaming .
