Thunderbird can be configured to work seamlessly with Google’s Gmail service. Messages are synchronized between your local version of Thunderbird and the web-based Gmail.

Table of Contents

To configure Thunderbird to work with Gmail, first enable IMAP on your Gmail account. See Gmail’s instructions for help. (IMAP is enabled on new Gmail accounts by default.)

Double check that “Access for less secure apps” is enabled. See Google’s article on “less secure apps” for help.

Next, select File > New > Existing Mail Account. . The “Mail Account Setup” dialog is displayed. After you provide your account information (real name, email address and password), Thunderbird will automatically configure your Gmail connection. Click Done , sign in with your Google account if prompted and that’s all! Thunderbird will download your existing messages and your Gmail will be ready to use.

For more detailed information, please refer to:

Archiving messages

In order to be consistent with Gmail’s behavior, Thunderbird archives your message in the “All Mail” folder, and not in an “Archive” folder as it does for other accounts (as described in the Archived Messages article).

Note that the Archive options. button is disabled for Gmail accounts, as it is not necessary to define the archive granularity with Gmail.

Subscribing to folders and synchronizing messages

Understanding Gmail labels and Thunderbird folders

Gmail uses a special implementation of IMAP. In this implementation, Gmail labels become Thunderbird folders. When you apply a label to a message in Gmail, Thunderbird creates a folder with the same name as the label and stores the message in that folder. Similarly, if you move a message to a folder in Thunderbird, Gmail will create a label with the folder name and assign it to the message.

In the example shown below, the folders at the same level as the “[Gmail]” folder (“g+”, “Personal”, “Receipts”, “Travel” and “Work”) correspond to Gmail labels.

How to access gmail with mozilla thunderbird

There is also a set of special sub-folders for the “[Gmail]” folder:

  • All Mail: contains all of the messages in your Gmail account, including sent and archived messages. Any messages that you see in the inbox will also appear in the [Gmail]/All Mail folder.
  • Drafts: contains draft messages.
  • Sent Mail: contains sent messages.
  • Spam: contains messages that were marked as spam (either by Gmail or Thunderbird).
  • Starred: contains messages that were starred (either by Gmail or Thunderbird).
  • Trash: contains deleted messages.
  • Important: contains messages that Gmail has flagged as “important”. (See Priority Inbox overview for more details about this Gmail feature.)

Subscribing to or unsubscribing from folders (labels)

You can configure which Gmail folders you want to display in Thunderbird. By default all Gmail folders are displayed, as described above. To configure folder display, right-click on the account name and select Subscribe .

How to access gmail with mozilla thunderbird

Uncheck any folders that you don’t want to display in Thunderbird. Messages will still be downloaded and available through the “All Mail” folder. They will also be included in search results. However, the Gmail label (Thunderbird folder) will not be displayed.

Synchronizing folders (labels)

If you want to see all your Gmail labels and messages in Thunderbird but prefer to avoid all the messages being downloaded to your system, you may want to tweak the synchronization settings. This allows you to define which folder should be synchronized. If you don’t synchronize a folder, the message header will still be displayed in Thunderbird, but the message content will only be downloaded when you click on the message header.

To change how messages are downloaded, set synchronization options for the account and for individual folders. ( Tools > Account Settings. Edit > Account Settings. ) See IMAP Synchronization for more information.

Up until today I have not had any problems accessing my Gmail account with Thunderbird. This morning however access was denied and I was prompted to provide a new password. i tried this but each time a message came back that it was unacceptable. In the end the only solution I found was to go in to my Google account and turn off secure apps or more precisely swich to allow unsecure apps. As soon as I did this I can access my gmail account again OK but it does beg the question why does Google NOW consider the Thunderbird application to be insecure. I am running version 52.5.2 (32 bit) which shows as being up todate. I am confuse why I have the 32 bit version as my windows 7 is 64 bit? I am concerned about continuing with secure apps switched off. Is there an alternative solution which would provide access with secure apps on?

Chosen solution

Wow thank you Toad Hall for such a swift and detailed reply. Very much appreciated. I have tried in the past to set up IMAP but failed hence the use of POP. I will give it another go though and try and set up a new IMAP account safe in the knowledge that what I have now should be OK for a while. Thanks again

There is no need to worry. If you have created a good strength password then all will be ok. It would be a good idea not to use that same password for other logins, but that is just good practise and applies to any password for any login.

Google/gmail calls apps that don’t support OAuth2 “less secure”. But, that doesn’t make them insecure. So what it means is gmail’s meaning of LessSecureApp is basically anything that doesn’t use OAuth2.

In thunderbird, gmail Imap mail accounts can connect using OAuth2 instead of SSL/TLS.

When you initially logon with OAuth2, you will be redirect to Google’s sign-in page,. Once you have signed in, Google issues you a special OAuth2 token which is saved in Thunderbird and can be seen in the same place as passwords. So when you next logon to gmail, it is using that unique OAuth ID instead of password.

OAUTH2 is not used with POP mail accounts. If you use IMAP then you can choose to use it.

I have an imap gmail account. Below is are two images showing where Connection Security: ‘OAuth2’ setting is selected. The first is under ‘Server Settings’ for incoming. The second shows where I’ve set up the outgoing server to use it.

However, if you currently use POP and want to try IMAP, then you need to create a new existing mail account and Connection Security as OAuth2 is selected at that time.

Thunderbird is an open-source email and personal information managing application that was developed by the Mozilla Foundation in 2003. It was designed to manage multiple emails accounts seamlessly with all possible features such as quick search, message grouping, and message filtering. Another feather in its cap would be the smooth functioning of Thunderbird with Google’s Gmail. However, just like any other technological glitch, even this one has a few issues which have become common. This technical interruption further leads to Thunderbird not working with Gmail.

What to do when Thunderbird is not working with Gmail?

Enable IMAP settings

For Thunderbird to work with Gmail in proper sync, the primary step is to set up the IMAP. The IMAP or Internet Message Access Protocol is a standard that stores all the emails and allows multiple clients applications to view the actions taken on those emails. By enabling the IMAP settings, Thunderbird and Gmail can work together in full swing.

Enable IMAP access through these steps-

  1. Open your Gmail account.
  2. Click on the ‘Settings’ tab present in the top right corner. How to access gmail with mozilla thunderbird
  3. Directly go to the ‘Forwarding and POP/IMAP’ section. How to access gmail with mozilla thunderbird
  4. Under the ‘IMAP access’ section, select ‘Enable IMAP’. Finally, click on ‘Save Changes.’How to access gmail with mozilla thunderbird
Check SMTP settings on Thunderbird

The simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) acts as the standard of communication between various message transfer agents. It is continuously updated and modified. Any imperfections in the SMTP settings could disturb the flow of sending and receiving emails while using Thunderbird.

Follow these steps to change the settings-

  1. Click on the Gmail account where the issue is occurring.
  2. From the top right corner, select ‘Account settings.’
  3. From the tabs present on the left side, click on ‘Server Settings’ to check it in detail.
Make changes to the antivirus software settings

If the antivirus software which is installed on your computer considers Thunderbird as a potential threat, then it restricts receiving and sending of emails through it. It might be the reason behind the blocking of emails and Thunderbird not working well with Gmail.Follow these steps to modify the settings of the Antivirus

  1. On your system, go to ‘Settings.’
  2. Under ‘Update & Security,’ click on ‘Windows Security.’
  3. Click on ‘Virus & threat protection’ and then on ‘Manage Settings.’
  4. Under ‘Add or remove exclusions,’ click on ‘Add an exclusion’ and finally, select Thunderbird.
Move to a previous version of Thunderbird
Contact the ISP
Switch to a different email client

Conclusion

Thunderbird is an email managing application developed by Mozilla Foundation. But it does have a few common issues when working with Gmail. To begin with, make sure the IMAP and SMTP settings are enabled in the Gmail and Thunderbird accounts. In addition, check if the antivirus software on your system is restricting the sending and receiving of emails. There are times when the current version of Thunderbird is not supported by the service provider. Here, you need to move back to a previous version or contact the Internet Service Provider if the issue of Thunderbird not working with Gmail still exists. Also, you can think of switching Thunderbird to Outlook by converting MBOX files to PST format.

g, you can repeat my steps and this time rename the profile folder to Thunderbird, then choose “Enable POP” option, com failed, Shopping, IMAP, Click “Forwarding and POP/IMAP”, which natively supports Gmail as an option, , In the “IMAP access”

Gmail provides multiple configuration options while configuring in Thunderbird. It can be configured as POP3 format in default and IMAP format also. You can configure your email as POP3 account if you don’t want to manipulate your INBOX from your email client. You can read your incoming mails and you won’t be able to delete your mails in your email Inbox with the email client.

IMAP offers complete administration of your INBOX from your email client. If you delete a mail in your email client, the mail will be deleted from your email account unless you are reconfiguring it in another way. POP3 configuration of Gmail account is default in Thunderbird. To configure as IMAP account it just needs a small change from the default procedure and that we will discuss here.

Open Thunderbird and Click on Tools—> Account Settings. You will get the account configuration options window with your existing accounts. In that window, Click on “Account options” and then click on “Add Account”. New Account configuration window will appear. In that window, enter your name, email address and password in the respective fields.

After entering the details, click on “Continue”. Thunderbird will look the configuration in their server and after that it will prompt with the available configurations. The default selection may be POP3 and IMAP will be optional. Here we have to select “IMAP”.

Now the account is ready to configure as IMAP in your PC/Laptop. If we want to configure any advanced options, we can click on to the “Manual config” Button. It will show the port details and server addresses. If we want to configure manually or the automatic configuration fails to detect settings, then we need to enter this configuration settings manually. Also if we are using any other email client other than Thunderbird, we can enter these settings manually to configure the account.

After verification of the manual settings or change of the configuration, you can test the settings with the “Re-Test” button provided before setting up the account. Finally you can Click on “Done” button to complete the configuration.

Now the mail configuration is completed and it will show in the accounts list. To start syncing of this account, just click on the account and it will start syncing immediately. If you have installed “Lightning” with Thunderbird, then your calendars will also start syncing. If you want to know the Lightning installation, see this article. Sync your calendars with Thunderbird. It is also possible to add the same account as POP and IMAP accounts separately with Thunderbird and you access both types at same time. Similarly you can add your chat accounts with Thunderbird like Facebook chat etc. by selecting “Add Chat Account” from the account configuration window.
