Privacy is a big topic when it comes to mobile devices. iPhones and iPads show little orange and green indicator icons when apps access the device’s camera or microphone. Here’s an Android app that can do the same.

Like the LED light on a webcam, the iPhone and iPad show colored dots in the status bar when an app is accessing the camera or microphone. Android shows when apps are accessing your location, but it lacks these indicators.

The app we’ll be using to bring this functionality over to Android is called “Access Dots.” It mimics the colored dots that are present on iPhone and iPad. The app is easy to set up and gives you more information about what apps are doing in the background.

First, install “Access Dots – iOS 14 cam/mic access indicators” from the Google Play Store on your Android phone or tablet.

How to access camera on android

When you first open the app, you’ll be greeted by a toggle to enable Access Dots. Turn it on to get started.

How to access camera on android

Toggling the switch will bring you to the Android Accessibility settings menu. In order for Access Dots to work, we’ll need to allow it to run as an Accessibility Service. Select it from the list of installed apps.

How to access camera on android

Next, enable “Use Access Dots” to proceed with the feature.

How to access camera on android

A pop-up will ask you to confirm that you want to grant Access Dots permission to be on your device. Tap “Allow” if you’re okay with that.

How to access camera on android

Now go back to the Access Dots app. The feature is already running, but you’ll probably want to do some tweaking. Tap the gear icon to open its settings.

How to access camera on android

First, you can change the color of the dots by tapping the circles and choosing a different color from the picker.

How to access camera on android

Next, you can decide where you would like the indicator dot to appear. Select one of the locations (Custom location requires an in-app purchase.).

How to access camera on android

Lastly, use the slider to adjust the size of the dot.

How to access camera on android

Besides the indicator dot, the app also keeps a log of apps that have accessed your camera and/or microphone. From the Access Dots main screen, tap the clock icon to see the history.

How to access camera on android

You’ll now see the colored dots whenever an app is using your camera or microphone.

How to access camera on android

That’s all there is to it. This is a nice little app to keep tabs on any apps that may be accessing your sensors in the background without your permission.

How to access camera on android

Android smartphones come loaded with features, and a built-in camera is one of the most iconic ones. No matter what model Android phone you have, it will have at least one camera, if not multiple cameras, at front and back.

While using these cameras is made easy by simply tapping the camera app in the app gallery or home screen, some users may want faster access to their phone’s camera.

Being able to access your Android phone’s camera faster can come in handy during various situations. Like if you are out for a leisurely stroll and spot something interesting, you only have a split second to capture it on your phone.

There are features built into your Android device and third-party apps that allow you to get quick access to your phone’s camera. And if you are wondering how exactly you can use these features and apps, you are in luck.

I have put together some simple ways that you can use to access your Android phone’s camera, so keep reading.

Why is it important to access your phone camera faster?

Smartphone photography is not a dream anymore; in fact, it became a reality a long time ago thanks to powerful Android camera phones.

If you are a journalist, blogger, content creator, or even a hobbyist photographer, capturing moments quickly is probably important to you.

While your smartphone camera app allows you to do just that, it still requires you to take a few steps to unlock and access your phone.

So there is always a need to make accessing your Android camera app faster, and I will help you achieve just that with the help of easy methods explained in the next section.

Methods to access your Android phone’s camera quickly

Ideally, you want to be able to take your Android phone out of your pocket and start recording, right? These methods can be used to make accessing your Android phone’s camera surprisingly fast:

1. Access your phone’s camera from the locked screen

Every Android smartphone brand running a relatively modern Android version comes with a handy camera icon right at the bottom right of the locked screen.

This feature allows users to simply swipe the camera icon available on their Android phone’s locked screen to open up the camera app.

You can then use your camera to take a photo or record a video quickly without having to unlock the phone, finding the camera app, and launching it to take a photo.

2. Double press the power or volume button to launch the camera app

Another neat option comes built into newer Android devices, which allows you to turn on your Android phone’s camera without even accessing the locked screen first.

This feature allows users to jump directly to the camera app while your phone’s screen is locked without any additional steps.

All you have to do is press the power button or the volume down button of your Android device twice.

While some devices may have quick camera access bound to double-pressing the power button, most Chinese Android phone brands have this feature bound to double-pressing the volume down button.

This feature is truly the fastest way to access your phone’s camera from any position at any time. If swiping the camera app seems too time-consuming for you then you can use this feature instead.

However, keep in mind that this feature will only work if your device supports it and in some devices, this camera shortcut might not be available.

3. Use Smooth Camera Launcher Android app

Not all hope is lost if your phone doesn’t support the quick gestures and shortcuts mentioned above to access the camera app.

Since there is an app for everything, you can use a lightweight app called Smooth Camera Launcher to access your phone’s camera from anywhere.

However, this app only allows you to use the shortcut keys to access your phone’s camera app while the screen is unlocked.

Once you install the app and launch it you are welcomed by a welcome screen that tells you about the different features available through the app.

When you have gone through the introductory screen, you will be taken to settings where you have the Hotkey for launching the camera option. You can use this option to set a hotkey that you can use to quickly launch the camera app.

How to access camera on android

However, keep in mind that you have to use these hotkeys while keeping your phone in landscape orientation to launch your Android phone’s camera app.

Conclusion

While the built-in quick launch camera features are the best way to launch your phone’s camera app, the Smooth Camera Launcher provides an alternative for phones that lack these features.

I hope the methods listed above will allow you to access your Android phone’s camera app quickly.

Privacy is a major concern when you install a new app on Android phones. Some may have access to your camera and microphone, putting your privacy at risk. If you’re running Android 10 or above, you can even find which Android apps are accessing your mic and camera or something else.

Let us see how to use the Android permission manager to find which apps can access microp[hone and camera on your Android phone.

Find Which Apps Can Access Microphone, Camera, Location on Android

Android’s permission manager isn’t a separate app but built-into the Android Settings app instead. So follow the steps below to find out which apps are accessing your mic, camera, or something else.

  1. Open the Settings app from the app drawer or the quick settings panel.
  2. In the Settings, select Appsand notifications.
  3. Next, select Advanced to expand the advanced settings.
  4. Select Permissionmanager.
  5. Alternatively, you can also just search for “Permission manager” in the Settings.
  6. In the Permission manager, select Mic, Camera, or something else for which you want to find the list of apps that have accessed the permission.

From the screen, you can manage app permissions for your camera, mic, notifications, etc.

Manage Mic, Camera & Other Permissions for Android Apps

The Permission manager does not just show you a list of the apps but it also lets you manage the said permission for these apps. It’s called Permission manager, after all.

  1. Go to Permission Manager from Settings on your Android phone.
  2. These apps are divided into sections. That depends on which apps have been allowed to access the permission, how and which have been denied.
  3. To deny app permission it is allowed to access, tap on the app, and select Deny.
  4. Similarly, to allow an app from the DENIED section, tap on it, and select Allow.

Manage Permissions for Android System Apps

By default, the Permission manager hides all system level apps from the list of apps. And there is a good reason for that. To see system-level apps, tap on the three-dot overflow menu button in the top-right, and select Show system.

When you select a system app, you’ll notice the permission options are grayed out. The permission manager does not allow changing permissions for system-level apps. But some system app permissions can be managed, in a limited fashion.

So, that’s how you can find out which apps are accessing device hardware features such as the mic, camera, location, etc. However, you can only change those permissions for third-party apps and not system-level apps.

You can get the new iOS-style privacy indicators from Android 12 on any phone to stop apps from spying on you.

As with previous Android versions, Google is making privacy one of the key areas of focus in Android 12. To that end, Google has introduced three big privacy features—a new privacy dashboard, an option to hide your precise location, and privacy indicators.

In this article, we will discuss how you can get the Android 12 privacy indicators on your current Android device.

Android 12 Privacy Indicators

Among the many new features of Android 12, a subtle but extremely useful feature is the camera and microphone access indicators. If an app tries to access the device’s camera or microphone in Android 12, you will immediately see an indicator in the top-right corner of the status bar.

They’re similar to a feature introduced in iOS 14.

Image Gallery (2 Images)

This will help you identify the Android apps trying to access the camera or the microphone without your consent.

As of writing this article, Android 12 is at the beta stage and only a handful of devices can install the Android 12 beta.

If your device isn’t among the Android 12 beta device list, Access Dots is a great alternative to get camera and microphone access indicators without needing to upgrade.

Get the Android 12 Camera and Mic Access Indicators on Your Current Device

Image Gallery (3 Images)

Download Access Dots, a free app from the Play Store.

Open the app and turn on the Access Dots toggle. This action will automatically take you to the Android accessibility settings. Now, enable Access Dots to run as an accessibility service.

You will now notice colored dots at the top of your screen whenever the camera or the mic is in use. If you toggle the Location Access Dot in the app settings, you will also see a dot whenever an app is using your location.

Image Gallery (3 Images)

Unlike the privacy indicators in Android 12, you can change the color of the camera and microphone access indicators in Access Dots. Moreover, you can change the size and location of the dots.

Access Dots also keeps track of apps that have used the device’s camera, microphone or location. On the app’s home page, tap on the history clock button in the bottom-right corner to view the Access Log.

The repetitive ads might get annoying, but overall Access Dots is a fantastic solution if you want to get those Android 12 privacy indicators on your current smartphone. The app can be installed on any device running Android 7.0 and above.

Download: Access Dots (Free, in-app purchases available)

Prevent Apps From Using Your Camera or Mic

Out of the millions of apps on the Google Play Store, there will always be a few malicious ones who will try to gain unwanted access to the camera app or the microphone.

The Access Dots app helps avoid that, or Android 12 if it’s available on your device.

There’s a raft of new privacy features coming with Android 12. But they could still go a whole lot further.

In the previous blogs, you have seen OpenCV used with Python in various applications like image processing, face detection, object detection, gesture recognition, object tracking, motion detection, etc.

OpenCV is an Open Source Computer Vision library, as it provides various functions, to perform all of the applications, like read, write, display the images, edge detection, contour detection, and many more. All these functions work for both images and videos either saved media or live streaming. (To know more about OpenCV and its application and functions, learn from here).

For live streaming, you can either use a web camera or some external camera like Pi camera, or android camera. This article is about how to access the android camera with the help of OpenCV in python and later will perform some of the common OpenCV applications.

Comparing Cases of Web Camera and External Camera

When using the web camera for any application then it’s limited to one place as you cant carry it everywhere all the time for testing. But this is not the case with the external camera, as you can carry it anywhere with placing system in one place, so it makes it flexible for testing.

Another used case is when you want to test your code in the dining hall, but you can’t as your system is in your room but if you use an external camera then it’s possible for you.

Apart from this if you want to keep process everything going on in your house/offices by sitting in your room then also this can be possible by using an external camera, obviously, replacement if CCTV, like face detection, face recognition, object detection, motion detection, and many more.

So, what would you do if you want to include everyone in the picture and you cannot find someone to take the picture for you?

Well, after reading this post you would be able to remotely control your Android phone’s camera from your friend’s Android phone.

This way no one gets left out and no one needs to rush into the picture without knowing how it would even turn out.
