Troubleshooting

Mistakes often made with Motorola SBV modems is that accidentially the “StandBy” button on top of the modem itself has been pressed by removing dirt or dust from the modem. If pressed it puts the modem in stand by mode which makes it unusable. Press the standby button again to set it to active mode.

Also when your connection is slow or you often get disconnected make sure that the signal strength of your modem is at least at 37dB. Lower rates can cause connectivity problems. You can check the signal rate by accessing the modem in the way described above.

There may be occasions when you need to reset your cable modem/router to factory defaults, for example if you have changed the Username and Password and lost the new values. Note that if you reset your device to its factory defaults, you will lose any changes you have made to settings in the device.

You should backup your settings before you do this. Instructions HERE

FACTORY RESET (or “HARD RESET”) :

1. Make sure the power to your unit is ON

2. Disconnect the Coaxial cable in the back of your modem

To access your surfboard cable modem open your web browser and use the IP address of 192.168.100.1. The default page that will open is the Status page. The information on this page gives a snapshot of a series of events that the modem goes through when establishing a connection to your cable ISP. The important item that indicates if the cable modem is online is Cable Modem Status, which should indicate Operational (Operational could be displayed in more than one line, where the illustration below shows Done.) This can be determined by the Online light being solid.

Other pages in the Surfboard’s internal pages give additional information including a limited sized log file. Reading Logs on the cable modem can give troubleshooting information, but this information is quite advanced and in most cases would only be a benefit to the provider’s technical staff.

The modem should have readings best within these ranges:

  • Downstream Power Level- This level is the downstream signal strength and can be plus or minus. Typically the lower you go in the minus range the more the modem struggles to keep being acquired. Getting down below -8 to -10 can result in periodic dB changes where the signal could degenerate even more to possibly -11, -14 or worse and loss of sync.
  • Signal to Noise Ratio- This reading should be above 25/27, but in the 30s would indicate a nice clean signal.
  • Upstream Power Level- This reading should certainly be lower than 54, depending on specifics about your cable companies equipment, as an absolute maximum, but would be better to be in no higher than the high 40s. Also known as the transmit level or return signal, as it gets into the higher regions the cable modem will have a harder and harder time keeping connectivity.

Remember, that when checking the cable modem signal levels to remember that these readings are a snapshot at that time. If you have issues on rainy days then compare the readings on a clear day to one when it rains. A deterioration of signal strength would indicate a moisture problem in either a splitter, cable or connection degrading your signal. Normally temperature changes can affect the power levels by plus or minus 3dB; a reason why you would not want signal levels close to the extreme limits.

      VoIP requires a good steady connection to your cable ISP provider. Your cable modem can give you information about how good that signal is and hence, the stability of the connection.

      Downstream (Rx) Power Level:
      This power level shows the amount of signal received by the modem from the cable companies’ transmitter.

      • -15 dB to +15 dB maximum.
      • -12 dB to +12 dB or better recommended.
      • 0 dB is the optimal level.

      Upstream (Tx) Power Level: This power level is the amount of signal transmitted by the modem back to the cable componies’ receiver.

      • +8 dB to +54 dB maximum.
      • Recommended upstream signal levels are +35 dB to +52 dB.

      A cable modem running a higher upstream modulation rate could possibly in some cases lower the modulation rate if the Tx level is higher than the maximum signal level allowed. This condition could cause slower speeds, packet loss, and even loss of connectivity.

      Motorola is a known name in the field of mobiles and routers. You can use the dashboard of the router for securing your connection, changing the password, changing the settings and many other such works. For that, you will have access to the web interface of your router by logging in. Here’s how you can log in to your Motorola router.

      • Connect your system to your router using LAN or wirelessly. Remember, you can’t log in to the dashboard unless you are connected to the router.
      • Launch a browser.
      • In the address bar, type: “192.168.0.1” and hit enter.
      • You will be taken to the login page.
      • If you are logging in for the first time, enter the User Id as the Admin and Motorola in the place of the password.
      • Click login and you will be taken to the dashboard.

      Now, you must change the password of your router. It is important because everyone knows your default password and hence, can easily enter into the network and lock you out of it. Moreover, your data can be misused as well.

      Changing The Motorola Router Network Name And Password

      After you have logged into the dashboard of your router, you can easily change the network name and password of your network.

      • Go to the basic Status and Settings page.
      • Then, navigate to the Wifi Privacy Settings section.
      • Check the box beside Show Key and wait for the page to reload.
      • Delete the current Network Name and type the new Network Name.
      • Repeat the same for the password.
      • Save the changes.

      All your devices that were connected to that network at that time will be disconnected. Therefore, you will have to reconnect them all using the new network name and password. Also, make sure the password is between 8 – 63 characters. You can use the upper and lower case letters, numbers, special characters, etc. But you can’t use a single quote mark. And your network name could be 6 – 32 characters long. Rest of the rules goes the same for the network name as well.

      In case you have forgotten your router’s password, you will have to reset it and repeat the login process all over again.

      Resetting The Motorola Router

      Resetting the router can help you resolve many issues. For instance, if the router is freezing or you have forgotten the password to your router’s dashboard, you can reset the router and the issue will be gone. We have provided the process to set up the router without any hassle.

      Through Web Interface

      You can reset the Motorola router through its web interface. For that,

      • Access the management interface by going to the address http://192.168.100.1.
      • Click on the Configuration tab.
      • Choose Reset All Defaults and confirm by clicking OK.
      • Left-click the option Restart Cable Modem and confirm by pressing OK.
      • The modem should restart in Factory Default condition. (This may take 5 – 30 minutes).

      However, if you are not able to reset the modem through the IP address, you can reset it manually as well.

      Manually resetting the Motorola router

      For manually resetting the router, power it on if it already isn’t. Now, find the reset button on the body of your router. The place of the reset button varies with the models of the router, however, often, it is placed at the back of the router.

      Press and hold the reset button for at least 15 seconds or until your router reboots. After it restarts, you can connect it to your system and login back into the dashboard using the process we mentioned at the beginning of this article.

Accessing your modem can give you a good indication of possible issues arising from inadequate signal strength or too much noise on the line that will affect the connection.

      By accessing the screen pages inside your modem you should be able to gain some information on your Internet connection. Two important pages are the Status page and the Signal page, both showing a snapshot of information about your current Internet provider’s Internet signal strength and potential possible issues that could affect your connection and ultimately your VoIP service.

      • Start by accessing your Arris surfboard cable modem by opening your web browser and using the IP address of 192.168.100.1 (This address is also used for older Surfboards.). Once open it should show you The default page the Status page. The most important information on this page is The Cable Modem Status which should show Operational. If a Failed appears above this information and the modem does not show Operational then the modem has failed to sync with the Cable Provider and is not connected. An Operational modem can also be determined by looking at the modem indicator lights with the Online light being solid.
      • The next page to get useful information and probably the most important one is the Signal page which will show certain power levels which can give an indication of a problem.

      Poor signal levels result in– Signal levels that are not in the acceptable parameters listed above can cause loss of connection, slow speeds and connection issues, including failure of one of the steps needed for registration with the provider, packet loss or the need for packet retransmission.

      Premise hardware– On premise hardware including splitters, bad connectors, and poor quality cabling will effect cable signal levels and can cause problems. The cable modem should be a direct line from the first splitter using the leg with the least dB loss. This will allow the best level of signal from the cable box at the premise to reach the modem.

      Signal level variation– Checking the modem’s signal levels is a snapshot of those levels at that time. Weather and the change of temperatures affects cable hardware which can reflect in variations of the levels at the modem. It is recommended that for best performance some headroom is included in a modem’s levels of approximately 3dB. Additionally, when checking the modem and finding variations that occur in a short period of time, where the signal level readings are varying sporadically is a cause for concern and may point to an issue that needs to be corrected.

      Cable Modem Signal Levels and what they mean

      How to troubleshooting your Internet connection by checking the signal levels.

      Modem Signal Levels

      Signal levels are a good indication on the performance of the modem which then affects the connection. A modem that has levels out of range will struggle to keep a connection with the provider’s head-end resulting in the modem going off line, packet loss, slower speeds and retransmits.

      Levels suggested for DOCSIS 3.0 or later modems are as follows (but these levels can be used for DOCIS 2 as well):
      Downstream Power Levels

      Downstream signal (Rx) is the quantity of signal received by the modem from the transmitter of the cable provider’s head-end. The signal is sent to each individual leg where it is then stepped down or distributed until a particular amount of that signal is then received by each subscriber’s modem.

      • Recommended Levels: -7 dBmV to +7 dBmV
      • Acceptable levels: -8 dBmV to -10 dBmV or +8 dBmV to +10 dBmV
      • A Maximum Level: -11 dBmV to -15 dBmV or +11 dBmV to +15 dBmV
      • Unacceptable levels that would cause a modem to loose sync: -15 dBmV and lower or +15 dBmV or higher.

      NOTE: A reading of (zero) 0dB is ideal.

      Upstream Power Levels

      Upstream (Tx) Transmit Power or as some cable techs also refer to as the return signal level is the quantity of signal transmitted by the modem for the receiver in the cable provider’s head-end.

      • Recommended Levels: +35 dBmV to +49 dBmV for DOCSIS 3.0 modems.
      • Recommended Levels: +35 dBmV to +47 dBmV for DOCSIS 3.1 modems.

      NOTE: A cable modem transmitting at higher upstream modulation rates can cause a degradation of the connection and result in slow speeds, packet loss and loss of the modem’s connection. However, some modems can operate with a transmit (Tx) level up to +54.

      *The transmit Tx level should have some head room. When constantly in the +50 to +54 range events can cause a higher level to occur which will lead to connection problems.

      Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR)

      Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR Downstream)- This reading should be above the 25dB to 27dB range, however some modems should be in the 30dB to 33dB range or higher.

      • Above 33dB would indicate a good clear signal.
      What a cable tech can do to improve your cable connection.

      To improve a downstream Rx signal there are several things that a cable tech can do if the issue lies outwards from the cable box on the premise.

      • Replace weathered connectors on the cable line from the tap to the premise.
      • For long cable runs from the tap, replace the cable to the premise with a larger new drop. Signal degrades over distance, so by using a larger cable (i.e. replacing a RG6 cable with a RG11 cable) can improve the signal by a couple of dB.
      • Correct issues with the tap connection if they exist.

      To improve a problematic upstream Tx signal may require adjustments further up the provider’s line at an amplifier or line extender (LE).

      Note: Placing a house cable signal amplifier at the premise cable box can boost the Rx downstream levels, but will not help a Tx level and will most likely degrade the Tx level slightly.

      How to access a motorola modem

      Accessing your home router from inside the network is easy. Simply type in your router’s IP address (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) in the web browser. But, how about accessing your router remotely?

      Now, before we come to that, let’s take a look at some of the reason, why you may want to do so.

      1. Your parents regularly ask you to fix their Internet, but you don’t live with them
      2. You want to check if the kids at home are playing games on their computer, instead of doing their homework.
      3. You suspect your neighbors are mooching on your Wi-Fi when you are not at home
      4. And finally, you can connect an external hard drive to your router and access it from anywhere

      Why not use remote desktop apps like TeamViewer?

      While you can also access your router with apps like TeamViewer, you need to keep the computer turned on at your home all the time. This is not practical if you are out and about for more than a couple of days. But routers are always ON whether you are at home or not. And on top of that, you don’t have to install any additional software. All you need is a web browser and you can access your router from any part of the world. Let’s see how it works.

      When you want to access your router from inside the network; all you have to do is type in the router’s IP address in the web browser. Similarly, to access your router from outside, you need to type in your public IP address followed by remote control port no i.e. 8080. So, if your public IP address is 74.12.168.14, then you’ll have to type 74.12.168.14:8080 on the web browser.

      But there are two problems here

      1. As a part of security measure, every router, by default has this remote management feature turned Off. So, you have to enable it manually on the router.

      2. Most home users are assigned a dynamic IP address, which means, every time you restart your router, your public IP changes. So, we need to figure out a way to bypass the dynamic IP address problem. And for that, we’ll use Dynamic DNS services like Dyn DNS or NoIp.

      Since every router is different, the steps to enable remote management and setup dynamic DNS is going to be somewhat different for each router. However, the basic principle remains the same.       How to Access Router Remotely

      Part 1: Turn On remote sharing

      Turning on remote sharing on the router is easy. All you need to do is type the router IP or default gateway address in the web browser. Next, enter your username and password. Now, once you are in the router’s web portal, look for the Remote Management option. Some routers called it Remote Access and it’s usually found under Advanced Settings.

      On Netgear router, you can find this option under Settings > Remote Management.

      On Dlink router, look for Tools > Adminstation > Enable Remote Managemen

      On Linksys router, go to Administration > Remote Managemen

      On TP=Link router, you can find this option under Security > Remote Management

      Since you are sharing your router web portal remotely, it’s a good security practice to change your default port no. from 8080 to something else. Also, make sure you don’t use default login credentials. Change it to something complex else anyone can log in to your network with a brute force attack.

      Part 2: Setup up Dynamic DNS

      Since most of us have a dynamic public IP address, it’ll change in the next few days. So let’s fix it by settings up Dynamic DNS. But before that, you need to understand what Dynamic DNS or DDNS actually is.

      Let’s take this analogy. If I change my postal address frequently, I won’t receive my letters on time. Right? So, instead of giving my address to everyone, I’ll give them my friend’s fixed address. Now, my friend will receive all my mail and I am going to keep him updated with my latest address. So, now he can easily forward the mail to me.

      So, this Dynamic DNS is similar to a friend in the middle. When you sign up with their service, you have to link your dynamic public IP to a domain name. And you can use that fixed domain name instead of your public IP. And they will do the job of updating your IP address in the background.

      Now there are many dynamic DNS providers out there. Some free, some paid. The best way to find, which service to choose, is by checking which service is supported on your router So follow these steps.

      1. Login to your router and look for an option that says Dynamic DNS.

      If it’s not there, then you can download IP updater software from any Dynamic DNS provider. And put it on the computer which is used frequently. But, almost every router (even the cheaper ones) have this Dynamic DNS options inbuilt, so you don’t have to worry about that.

      I have a custom ROM called dd-wrt installed on my Netgear router. It supports DDNS and no-IP. Now since the first one is paid only. I will go with the second one, i.e no-IP. And by looking at the interface, I can tell, all I need is a domain name, and username/password.

      2. So go to noip.com and create a free account.

      3. Next, go to the dashboard, there you’ll find an option to Add hostname. Click on that. A new window will open, write a new sub-domain of your choice and click add.
